Strikingly he was talking directly to the country when he said there was a need to heal, when he said people were looking at the labour party and that he thought it would take ambition and bravery to deliver the decade of National Renewal that he is pledging. The key part of that speech, the bit that labour hopes will resonate with the electorate, was the whole section where he talked about trying to start Rebuilding Houses in the uk. He talked about building 1,000,000 and a half houses over the next parliament, that 300,000 or so a year. That has been part of Labour Plasma Pitch to the electorate at the next election. Finding parts of the next election. Finding parts of the green belt that can be reclassified and making it easier to build there. Taking on what he called the blockers and fighting the blockers. The bit i found really interesting about housing in particular was when he said he was prepared to have that fight. We have talked a lot about House Building over the past two years, the conservatives have had big pledges on it as well, but the question has always been as there a political leader who can take on those fights and he is trying to persuade voters that he is the man to do that. Also i thought really interesting that he flagged up and said something the Shadow Chancellor said yesterday which is that labour wants to fight this election on the issue of the economy. Traditionally an issue where a lot of people thought the conservatives had a bit of the front foot but labour now thinks after everything thats happened with the economy that it can take that fight to the government and say we are the Party Offering more of a plan for economic growth. But ultimately what that speech was supposed to do is three things. It was supposed to persuade voters that sir keir starmer was serious about power. That he could reassure them that he could be Prime Minister. It was supposed to persuade them that the tide was turning, that this was a moment in british politics where they could be a real change.
