i don't want anyone to die. soldiers go inside gaza, it's going to cost a lot of lives. we will look at what might happen next and how the international community is responding to the development. here we'll be looking at how uk families have also been caught up in the conflict. also on today's programme... the labour leader sir keir starmer prepares for his conference speech — with a focus on more housing to build a new britain. the uk could have the weakest growth and the highest inflation of the world's seven advanced economies — that's according to the international monetary fund. and the hosts of the euros in 2028 are announced as the uk and the republic of ireland. and coming up on bbc news: the uk and ireland have been officially announced as hosts for euro 2028. turkey withdrew last week and will co—host euro 32 with italy. good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. it's the fourth day of this war. israel says it has now recovered the bodies of 1500 hamas fighters who managed to break through israel's border with the gaza strip on saturday, to launch a bloody assault. israeli forces are now said to have reclaimed control of that area. this is the seen live in the gaza strip. the city, the territory continues to be rocked by israeli air strikes. continues to be rocked by israeli airstrikes. israel continues to be rocked by israeli air strikes. israel has also ordered air strikes. israel has also ordered a complete siege of the territory, depriving palestinians of essential services including water, electricity, food and fuel. the palestinian authority say that so far, 770 palestinians have been killed so far. israel says 900 of its citizens have been killed. last night, the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, warned that israel's air strikes were just the beginning of its operations. hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organisation by many western governments, including the united kingdom, also had a warning, saying it would kill some of the israeli hostages it is holding if the israeli governor does not give enough prior warning of its attacks on civilian homes. in ourfirst report, let's take a look at the latest developments in israel and the gaza strip, with this report from nick beake. the morning brought fresh strikes on gaza. palestinian communities pounded in a hail of rockets. israel says it hit more than 200 hamas targets, those behind the weekend's deadly attack. but amid the rubble, yet more civilians. injured and killed. translation: this is true terrorism. families here live in peace and don't have anything to do with this. what happened was revenge. the israeli military released footage of its aerial assault. it says hamas's actions have changed everything and that any building in the gaza strip with a hamas militant inside is now a target. israel is at war. we didn't want this war. it was forced upon us in the most brutal and savage way. but though israel didn't start this war, israel will finish it. in the south of israel, the military says it has now regained control of areas where hamas gunmen went on the rampage, and israeli forces are now gathering outside gaza in anticipation of a major ground offensive. here injerusalem the government says the strength of its retaliation will reshape the middle east. but its response is being complicated because it is feared up to 150 israelis are being held hostage in gaza, with hamas threatening to kill them. video has emerged of the moment on saturday morning this mother was kidnapped by hamas fighters. shiri silverman bibas was taken away with her two sons. this photograph shows her bloodied husband being bundled away separately. taken by terrorists, it's like every person's worst nightmare. we made contact with 0fri. it's her brother and his family in the footage, now being held captive. what do you think the israeli government should do to try and rescue them? i don't want to say send all the soldiers there, because i don't want anyone to die. soldiers go inside gaza, it's going to cost a lot of lives. the government has to step in and start negotiating with them and try to think that they are safe, that they are more valuable to the hamas alive than dead, and that is why they will keep them alive. that is my hope. the bodies of more israelis are being taken away for burial. this is a small community where more than 100 were killed. not far away in gaza, the bloodied body armour of two palestinian journalists was carried through the streets alongside their bodies. israel has urged civilians to leave their homes here as the onslaught continues, but there are limited options to seek safety or find a way out. nick beake, bbc news, jerusalem. lets bring our coverage right up to date. in a moment we'll speak to our correspondent anna foster who is in sderot. first, let's go inside the gaza strip. my colleague rushdi aboualouf is there now. why tell us what it was like last bombing heavily the neighbourhood, which is located south—west of gaza, 200 air strikes, targeting several buildings. most of the hamas run government buildings are located there. some of the telecommunication company headquarters are there. they were all flattened to the ground. when they start to hit the place, many of the residential buildings were effected and destroyed. i was in one of those buildings, with around 20 families, with my family. we spent seven hours without electricity, without water and without access to the internet. the whole building was shaking, the sound of bombing was terrifying, kids were screaming. people were appealing. i saw people fleeing from their home, and walking, in this situation, to the nearby hospital. living in this neighbourhood for the last ten years, what surprised me is the scale of destruction i saw this morning. i had a chance to drive around, and ifilmed some of morning. i had a chance to drive around, and i filmed some of the footage while driving. that shows the intensity of the shelling, and how the destruction in this neighbourhood is blocking the main road, there is debris everywhere, glass shattered, cars damaged. what could happen next. israel's security cabinet has been meeting to discuss its next steps. prime minister netanyahu is under huge pressure to deal a decisive blow to hamas, to eliminate its leadership and stop the attacks on his country. one option being considered is a ground invasion of gaza. but going into gaza, a place under siege and boiling with hostility to israel, is fraught with risks. hamas would almost certainly call on the general population to resist. casualties would be huge, both palestinian and israeli. and israel's military advantage over hamas would be blunted. gaza's teeming streets are no place for tanks. they would be highly vulnerable to ambush, as would israeli infantry. the gunmen of hamas know their city's backstreets, bunkers and tunnels far better than outsiders do. gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth. 2.3 million people crammed into a narrow coastal strip pretty much the size of the isle of wight. now, access is normally controlled by israel on three sides and egypt to the south. you can see in green here the border crossing points. but within its borders it's been run by hamas since they took power in 2007. and right now hamas holds a key weapon — israeli hostages, over 100 of them. almost certainly distributed in secret hiding places, underground internals and cellars, rescuing them all simultaneously will be almost impossible. israel has rarely faced such a difficult dilemmas in what to do next. frank gardner, bbc news. the leaders of the uk, us, france, germany and italy have jointly released a statement condemning hamas for its attacks on israel, and what they called the group's "appalling acts of terrorism". the un human rights chief echoed their remarks, but also told israel that the siege of gaza was illegal under international law. paul adams has been looking at the reponses to the crisis around the world. around the world, huge displays of solidarity with israel. landmarks illuminated in blue and white, israel's colours. jewish communities and their supporters filling the streets. but other voices raised too. the palestinian diaspora and its allies, galvanised by events in gaza. jews united will never be defeated! in new york, the two passionate sides came face to face. this latest convulsion in the middle east triggering fury and grief. in this heated environment governments grapple with how to manage an evolving crisis, concentrating their anger for now on hamas. hamas terrorists aren't a resistance. they're not freedom fighters. they are terrorists. and no one in canada should be supporting them, much less celebrating them. they have made the plight of the palestinian people immeasurably worse because of these terrorist actions that they have perpetrated against children, against civilians, against old people. at the white house, urgent meetings on how to move forward. no calls yet for a ceasefire, washington concentrating on ways to support israel — including sending warships to the eastern mediterranean, an entire carrier group. a warning to others, including iran, not to get involved. with israel tightening its grip on gaza and preparing to invade, its left to the un for now to urge restraint. the imposition of sieges that endanger the lives of civilians by depriving them of goods essential for their survival is prohibited under international humanitarian law. with the west firmly on israel's side, it knows it has a window of opportunity to achieve its goals in gaza. but with israeli officials talking of dismantling hamas altogether, this crisis is going to be long and bloody. at some point, even israel's friends may decide enough is enough. paul adams, bbc news. a crisis that the world is watching, and the region is watching closely, hoping this crisis does not spread beyond the borders of israel and the garden —— the gaza strip, hoping that both sides, all sides, can find a way out of this crisis, but knowing this is still only in its fourth day, and many more days to come. studio: thank you very much, lyse doucet. among those caught up in saturday's attack were deborah mintz from essex, who is british—israeli, and her daughter aimee. they were sheltering in a safe room in their home in central israel when gunmen entered the house, tried to force their way into the safe room, and then set fire to the building. aimee had given birth to a baby boyjust days earlier. speaking from israel along with herfamily, deborah described what happened to them. my daughter was looking at her camera, looking at the camera through her phone, when she screamed, "they've entered the house." and the door to the safe room has a handle that doesn't lock. again, it's not against home invasion. she and her husband with all their might get that handle up so that the terrorists would not open the door. they were firing at the door, the steel door, firing at the steel windows. they cut off the electricity and when they saw we weren't coming out, they set fire to the house. the smokejust came under the steel door. opened the window when we thought the terrorists weren't there, put the baby on the windowsill, gave him air. we all got air. when we heard the terrorists coming back towards our house, we closed up. we literally threw the baby onto the bed. and we did this several times. and i don't know how we survived. and eventually the army got through. here, families have spoken of their panic on learning their loved ones in israel may have been taken hostage by hamas. our reporter nickjohnson has been speaking to one woman in london who believes her elderly parents are among those who've been taken. the tales of heartache transcend borders, the ripple of this attack reaching this living room in london. sharon's elderly and infirm parents live in a kibbutz in southern israel. their home, which they share with hundreds of others, was stormed by gunmen on saturday. there has been a total decimation of the place. nothing seemed to be left. they burned the houses to scare the people out. so people were in the secure room trying to keep the door locked. people had... i've heard stories of people running through the window. whole families were gunned down. elderly, elderly people were taken out of their homes. people waited for hours. there is nothing left. nothing is left there. sharon's mum relies on round the clock oxygen. her dad spent years working as an activist. he spent his time in retirement twice a week driving palestinians from the border to hospital. he spoke arabic. he believed in humanity and he believed in making things work. sharon thinks dozens of people from her parents' kibbutz have been taken hostage, and many others killed. she's asked us not to identify her parents for fear of retaliation. sharon and her family spent many years in kibbutz nir oz, which lies less than a mile from israel's boundary with gaza. there is a lot of forces that try to make us feel that the others are not human. and i think we have to go back to remembering that these are humans. this is my mum, but she could be your mum, you know, and she could be anyone's mum. and i don't wish that on anyone. nickjohnson, bbc news. scotland's first minister, humza yousaf, has revealed that his parents—in—law are trapped in gaza after travelling there to visit sick relatives. he says the israelis have told them to leave, but that they have no way of getting out — and the uk foreign office could not guarantee safe passage. let's turn to today's other news now. sir keir starmer will promise to "build a new britain" if his party wins the next election, when he addresses the labour conference this afternoon. on the third day of the gathering in liverpool, the labour leader will promise "a decade of national renewal" and suggest he wants at least two terms in office. from liverpool, our political correspondent hannah miller reports. archive: milton keynes, . the huge new city being built in the south midlands, | will probably be among the last of the new towns. more than 50 years on, the labour party's pledging to get building again with a wave of new english towns similar to those created after world war two. and what happens at the moment is developers, in effect, pick the places where the houses go. we've got a different idea here, which is to build a new generation of new towns, which are, of course, about housing, but notjust about housing. they're about the other things that make up a community. we don't know how many communities the party is planning, but labour is saying it would allow the development of what it prefers to call grey belt. that's low quality green belt such as scrubland and car parks. a concern for some who seek to protect the environment. when land's already been developed, that's fine to think about new purposes, but talking about scrub and, you know, scrub could be potentially, you know, land that we could restore for nature, land that we could help solve the climate crisis. so i think the grey belt is much more challenging in terms of thinking about where we put housing, especially when we've got this untapped resource on brownfield sites. recruiting more neighbourhood police officers is also on the agenda and the labour leader's promising more local mayors with powers over planning, skills and transport. but by talking about housing, the party's tapping into a key issue for many at this conference. i was very lucky to be born into a council house and i think that's what gave me a really solid foundation. but sadly, growing up, i can't i can't fathom having the keys to my own property. getting on the property ladder is something that i, you know, i consider a lot. so, yeah, it is important that he discusses that. as a young person without a house and will be looking to get - on the property ladder at some point. hopefully, _ this is very much a... i would like to see more houses being built. - labour admit these promises could take ten years to deliver. but after rebuilding his party to be in contention at a general election, keir starmer*s now got his sights on repairing the country as well. hannah miller, bbc news, liverpool. let's talk to our political correspondent nick eardley, who's in liverpool. what is the mood like a hedge of the lisa's speech? a girl pretty confident, there is no doubting labour has had a spring in its step for months. —— ahead of the leader's speech. for months. -- ahead of the leader's seech. . , for months. -- ahead of the question of why labour are ahead in the polls. is it because keir starmer is popular and inspiring or because the conservatives have taken a bit of a thumping? i think keir starmer will try to address some of the criticism that he is not the reason for the poll leads in his speech in an hour or so. we are told he will try to answer the question why labour, what is the positive vision he has to take it to an election next year? you can be sure that the new towns that had i was talking about will be a key part. we know sir keir has talked a lot about rebuilding the country both in a metaphorical and a physical sense with more homes. but the fact labour is already talking about a decade or so of power shows how confident it is at the moment.— so of power shows how confident it is at the moment. many thanks, nick eardle . the uk faces another five years of high interest rates to try to stem rising prices, according to the global group, the international monetary fund. it expects the uk to have the highest inflation and slowest growth next year of any of the g7 advanced economies — which include the us, france, germany, canada, italy and japan. but the treasury says the imf*s report is not up to date. let's talk to our economics editor faisal islam who is at the imf meeting in nyons in france. a gloomy prediction? yes, as you sa , a gloomy prediction? yes, as you say. another _ a gloomy prediction? yes, as you say, another gloomy _ a gloomy prediction? yes, as you say, another gloomy imf - a gloomy prediction? yes, as you i say, another gloomy imf prediction about the uk economy at the very moment where the government was trying to paint a picture that the economy was perhaps starting to turn a corner from three years of rolling crisis. some caveats over the assumption around growth next year being bottom of the table, but the numbers on inflation show the uk this year and next having the worst inflation in the g7 grouping in the middle of the rank in terms of unemployment. the big picture is interest rates staying higher for longer to deal with that inflation problem, the enduring problem, and particularly higher and longer for the uk. that is the broader issue against a backdrop of a world economy that is subdued, but is limping not sprinting after three years of geopolitical crisis which look like being added to at the moment. . ~ look like as hosts of the 2028 european championship. it means the games will be played in england, northern ireland, scotland and wales as well as in the republic of ireland. the prime minister says the event will "inspire a whole new generation." let's talk to our sports editor, dan roan. a significant moment? a coup by the uk and ireland? absolutely but also something of a formality too because this 5—nation bid to, it only rival until last week was turkey but they withdrew from the process, choosing instead to focus on a joint bid with italy for 2032, leaving the uk and ireland unopposed. they still had to give a presentation at uefa's headquarters on the shores of lake geneva in nyon, but they were indeed declared the hosts of the euro in five years. not since 1996 when england hosted the euros will the country have hosted a major tournament as big as this. people will say it is the biggest sporting event the uk has hosted, along with ireland, since the london 2012 olympics. i spoke to former wales legend gareth bale who had fronted the big presentation. i think it's important for especially wales to keep on the map, to keep pushing forward, to keep trying to better ourselves. so i think having a major tournament now, internationally in our country, as well as over to the uk and ireland, is massively important. yeah, i'm glad i could be a part of it again. and hopefully it can do a greatjob, like i'm sure the fans will turn up and do like they normally do. organisers are saying this tournament could provide a £2.5 billion boost to the uk and ireland economy, but uefa will have wanted assurances today of the security even the chaotic scenes we saw at the euro 2021 finals at wembley a couple of years ago, and the fact that two of the proposed ten venues, both everton's i don't want anyone to die. soldiers go inside gaza, it's going to cost a lot of lives. we will look at what might happen next and how the international community is responding to the development. here we'll be looking at how uk families have also been caught up in the conflict. also on today's programme... the labour leader sir keir starmer prepares for his conference speech — with a focus on more housing to build a new britain. the uk could have the weakest growth and the highest inflation of the world's seven advanced economies — that's according to the international monetary fund. and the hosts of the euros in 2028 are announced as the uk and the republic of ireland. and coming up on bbc news: the uk and ireland have been officially announced as hosts for euro 2028. turkey withdrew last week and will co—host euro 32 with italy. good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. it's the fourth day of this war. israel says it has now recovered the bodies of 1500 hamas fighters who managed to break through israel's border with the gaza strip on saturday, to launch a bloody assault. israeli forces are now said to have reclaimed control of that area. this is the seen live in the gaza strip. the city, the territory continues to be rocked by israeli air strikes. continues to be rocked by israeli airstrikes. israel continues to be rocked by israeli air strikes. israel has also ordered air strikes. israel has also ordered a complete siege of the territory, depriving palestinians of essential services including water, electricity, food and fuel. the palestinian authority say that so far, 770 palestinians have been killed so far. israel says 900 of its citizens have been killed. last night, the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, warned that israel's air strikes were just the beginning of its operations. hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organisation by many western governments, including the united kingdom, also had a warning, saying it would kill some of the israeli hostages it is holding if the israeli governor does not give enough prior warning of its attacks on civilian homes. in ourfirst report, let's take a look at the latest developments in israel and the gaza strip, with this report from nick beake. the morning brought fresh strikes on gaza. palestinian communities pounded in a hail of rockets. israel says it hit more than 200 hamas targets, those behind the weekend's deadly attack. but amid the rubble, yet more civilians. injured and killed. translation: this is true terrorism. families here live in peace and don't have anything to do with this. what happened was revenge. the israeli military released footage of its aerial assault. it says hamas's actions have changed everything and that any building in the gaza strip with a hamas militant inside is now a target. israel is at war. we didn't want this war. it was forced upon us in the most brutal and savage way. but though israel didn't start this war, israel will finish it. in the south of israel, the military says it has now regained control of areas where hamas gunmen went on the rampage, and israeli forces are now gathering outside gaza in anticipation of a major ground offensive. here injerusalem the government says the strength of its retaliation will reshape the middle east. but its response is being complicated because it is feared up to 150 israelis are being held hostage in gaza, with hamas threatening to kill them. video has emerged of the moment on saturday morning this mother was kidnapped by hamas fighters. shiri silverman bibas was taken away with her two sons. this photograph shows her bloodied husband being bundled away separately. taken by terrorists, it's like every person's worst nightmare. we made contact with 0fri. it's her brother and his family in the footage, now being held captive. what do you think the israeli government should do to try and rescue them? i don't want to say send all the soldiers there, because i don't want anyone to die. soldiers go inside gaza, it's going to cost a lot of lives. the government has to step in and start negotiating with them and try to think that they are safe, that they are more valuable to the hamas alive than dead, and that is why they will keep them alive. that is my hope. the bodies of more israelis are being taken away for burial. this is a small community where more than 100 were killed. not far away in gaza, the bloodied body armour of two palestinian journalists was carried through the streets alongside their bodies. israel has urged civilians to leave their homes here as the onslaught continues, but there are limited options to seek safety or find a way out. nick beake, bbc news, jerusalem. lets bring our coverage right up to date. in a moment we'll speak to our correspondent anna foster who is in sderot. first, let's go inside the gaza strip. my colleague rushdi aboualouf is there now. why tell us what it was like last in this part of the city, considered as the safe haven for most of the people of gaza for the last 17 years. around seven o'clock last 17 years. around seven o'clock last night, the israeli started bombing heavily the neighbourhood, which is located south—west of gaza, 200 air strikes, targeting several buildings. most of the hamas run government buildings are located there. some of the telecommunication company headquarters are there. they were all flattened to the ground. when they start to hit the place, many of the residential buildings were effected and destroyed. i was in one of those buildings, with around 20 families, with my family. we spent seven hours without electricity, without water and without access to the internet. the whole building was shaking, the sound of bombing was terrifying, kids were screaming. people were appealing. i saw people fleeing from their home, and walking, in this situation, to the nearby hospital. living in this neighbourhood for the last ten years, what surprised me is the scale of destruction i saw this morning. i had a chance to drive around, and ifilmed some of morning. i had a chance to drive around, and i filmed some of the footage while driving. that shows the intensity of the shelling, and how the destruction in this neighbourhood is blocking the main road, there is debris everywhere, glass shattered, cars damaged. sderot. all- much open. anna foster, thank you forjoining us from sderot. all of. forjoining us from sderot. all of the signs are that israel is preparing for a ground invasion. frank gardner looks at what could happen next. israel's security cabinet has been meeting to discuss its next steps. prime minister netanyahu is under huge pressure to deal a decisive blow to hamas, to eliminate its leadership and stop the attacks on his country. one option being considered is a ground invasion of gaza. but going into gaza, a place under siege and boiling with hostility to israel, is fraught with risks. hamas would almost certainly call on the general population to resist. casualties would be huge, both palestinian and israeli. and israel's military advantage over hamas would be blunted. gaza's teeming streets are no place for tanks. they would be highly vulnerable to ambush, as would israeli infantry. the gunmen of hamas know their city's backstreets, bunkers and tunnels far better than outsiders do. gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth. -- ahead of the leader's seech. ., , speech. there has always been the auestion speech. there has always been the question of— speech. there has always been the question of why — speech. there has always been the question of why labour _ speech. there has always been the question of why labour are - speech. there has always been the question of why labour are ahead i speech. there has always been the | question of why labour are ahead in the polls. is it because keir starmer is popular and inspiring or because the conservatives have taken a bit of a thumping? i think keir starmer will try to address some of the criticism that he is not the reason for the poll leads in his speech in an hour or so. we are told he will try to answer the question why labour, what is the positive vision he has to take it to an election next year? you can be sure that the new towns that had i was talking about will be a key part. we know sir keir has talked a lot about rebuilding the country both in a metaphorical and a physical sense with more homes. but the fact labour is already talking about a decade or so of power shows how confident it is at the moment.— so of power shows how confident it is at the moment. many thanks, nick eardle . the uk faces another five years of high interest rates to try to stem rising prices, according to the global group, the international monetary fund. it expects the uk to have the highest inflation and slowest growth next year of any of the g7 advanced economies — which include the us, france, germany, canada, italy and japan. but the treasury says the imf*s report is not up to date. let's talk to our economics editor faisal islam who is at the imf meeting in nyons in france. a gloomy prediction? yes, as you sa , a gloomy prediction? yes, as you say. another _ a gloomy prediction? yes, as you say, another gloomy _ a gloomy prediction? yes, as you say, another gloomy imf - a gloomy prediction? yes, as you i say, another gloomy imf prediction about the uk economy at the very moment where the government was trying to paint a picture that the economy was perhaps starting to turn a corner from three years of rolling crisis. some caveats over the assumption around growth next year being bottom of the table, but the numbers on inflation show the uk this year and next having the worst inflation in the g7 grouping in the middle of the rank in terms of unemployment. the big picture is interest rates staying higher for longer to deal with that inflation problem, the enduring problem, and particularly higher and longer for the uk. that is the broader issue against a backdrop of a world economy that is subdued, but is limping not sprinting after three years of geopolitical crisis which look like being added to at the moment. . ~ look like being added to at the moment. ., ,, , ., ., look like being added to at the moment. ., ,, ., , ., now, football's coming home — sort of — because the uk and the republic of ireland have been confirmed as hosts of the 2028 european championship. it means the games will be played in england, northern ireland, scotland and wales as well as in the republic of ireland. the prime minister says the event will "inspire a whole new generation." let's talk to our sports editor, dan roan. a significant moment? a coup by the uk and ireland? absolutely but also something of a formality too because this 5—nation bid to, it only rival until last week was turkey but they withdrew from the process, choosing instead to focus on a joint bid with italy for 2032, leaving the uk and ireland unopposed. they still had to give a presentation at uefa's headquarters on the shores of lake geneva in nyon, but they were indeed declared the hosts of the euro in five years. not since 1996 when england hosted the euros will the country have hosted a major tournament as big as this. people will say it is the biggest sporting event the uk has hosted, along with ireland, since the london 2012 olympics. i spoke to former wales legend gareth bale who had fronted the big presentation. i think it's important for especially wales to keep on the map, to keep pushing forward, to keep trying to better ourselves. so i think having a major tournament now, internationally in our country, as well as over to the uk and ireland, is massively important. yeah, i'm glad i could be a part of it again. and hopefully it can do a greatjob, like i'm sure the fans will turn up and do like they normally do. organisers are saying this tournament could provide a £2.5 billion boost to the uk and ireland economy, but uefa will
