israel says it is still trying to regain full control of eight areas where hamas militants infiltrated following saturday's attack. the number of israeli civilians and soldiers taken hostage has been put at 100 by the israeli embassy to the us, though some have been freed. in northern israel, hezbollah rockets targeted three military positions, with israel responding with barrages of artillery into southern lebanon. the un security council will meet later on sunday. president biden has vowed rock solid support for israel and warned against other countries taking advantage of the situation. a british man serving with the israeli army has been killed in the hamas attack. nathanel young who was 20 had been serving with the israeli defence services when he was killed on the gaza border. in a statement, his brother eliot young said: nathanel was full of life and was loved by everyone. two other british citizens are still missing, one being jake marlowe — he was working as security at an outdoor party near the gaza border when the attack happened. and in egypt, two israeli tourists and their egyptian tour guide were shot dead in alexandria, apparently by a policeman. let's show you the scene live in gaza now. it is looking a bit quieter now in terms of attacks. we do know, because we have seen them in the live shot. israeli airstrikes are ongoing in response to hamas* attack — including some in the last few hours. palestinian health officials say 20 children are among the more than 300 killed there. they say over 2,000 people have been wounded. with a roundup of the latest developments, here's richard galpin: 0vernight, the israeli forces bombarded gaza. and it has continued this morning. the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, making it clear the retaliation for the attack would be massive. translation: all of the places hamas - is active in, in this city of evil, - all the places hamas is hiding in, operating from, we will turn them into ruins. i'm telling the people of gaza, get out of there now because we're about to take action everywhere with all our force. the israeli military has also carried out artillery strikes in southern lebanon after mortars were fired from there towards israeli positions this morning. this morning, some mortars that were fired from hezbollah in the north, we responded with artillery fire. and we hope they don't make the mistake of coming into the fight. lebanon's militant hezbollah movement is also claiming it's carried out an attack on israel, saying it was in solidarity with the palestinian resistance. it's now been confirmed that a british man serving in the israeli army, nathanael young, has been killed on the gaza border. meanwhile, it's been estimated that more than 100 soldiers and civilians have been taken as hostages by the militants. some are alive and others are presumed dead. children, women and the disabled are amongst them. another british citizen, jake marlow, who was working in security at an outdoor party, has now been confirmed as missing. richard galpin, bbc news. that was featured with the very latest on what is happening in those areas. israeli tanks have moved along the border with lebanon — as tension mounts between israel and lebanon's powerful armed group hezbollah. the israeli military says it fired artillery into an area of lebanon where cross—border fire was launched. 0ur middle east correspondent quentin somerville is in kfarchouba on lebanon's border with southern israel — and has sent this update. this morning hezbollah targeted the israeli position behind me on the hill there, a radar station, firing a number of mortars and artillery back. it released a statement afterwards saying the attack was in solidarity with the palestinians. it was also very narrow and calibrated attack. because hezbollah is one of the most effective militant organisations in the middle east, it has a huge arsenal of resources. it can strike deep into israel. this was a very calibrated attack, very carefully positioned. not to lead to escalation, at least at this moment, and since then, we have heard from a senior hezbollah official that they will not be neutral in the war. they said the united states and israel must stop or the whole region will become involved. what we know from israel, they are not planning to stop because israel is planning what it says will be a long war. a threat, really, or a spoken threat from hezbollah that there is a risk of them becoming further enrolled in the conflict with the enormous arsenal that they have if this conflict continues to escalate. and the question, i guess, many are asking is, you know, how moore is hezbollah capable of doing in terms of damage? how much more is hezbollah capable of doing in terms of damage? a great deal, if it comes to that. they have... we know that they have a great significant supply of long—range missiles, notjust here at the border, notjust a small israeli radar station, but deep inside israel. of course, israel will respond. about 55 minutes ago, israel responded and there was an artillery strike here on the border of the village. all day, we have heard israeli warplanes and drones in the area, that is not unusual for this part of southern lebanon, you often hear them here, but certainly an escalation and intention. and do it in anticipation. that is notjust about here in southern lebanon. that can be felt here and all over the country. a worry that this country, already deeply troubled, in the middle of a financial crisis, without a president, desperately poor and has a war on the economic crisis will fate yet another issue. that was quentin somerville there on the border between lebanon and israel. i want to take you to pictures coming into us live. this is a checkpoint near the border with gaza. what you can see there are israeli forces on what they are doing right now is blocking passage to gaza. they are blocking passage to gaza. they are blocking passage to gaza. they are blocking passage to gaza from that point there. you can see the police vehicles there with their lights flashing, quite a number of policemen outside their cars as well, armed police. that is the latest coming to us from just south of ashkelon, just near the border with gaza city. i want to show you some of the latest videos that's been coming into us now and our bbc verify team have authenticated. a video has emerged on social media appearing to show a gun battle taking place near the gaza border. a warning some of these images do contain distressing scenes. this incident we believe to have taken place earlier on sunday. israeli forces have exchanged fire on a road near gaza border. this footage verified by bbc news shows a gunfight involving israeli forces on the route 4 highway between ashdod and the gaza border. let's have a listen. gunfire. sirens wail. 0ur bbc verify team have written a post for our live page, explaining how they went about checking this video, and if you do have time, go and have a look and it is very interesting how the bbc verify videos and pictures, particularly working out where they where and when they were. you do see quite a lot of videos circulating on social media that are real, but happened a while ago. we have also received footage of people in gaza scrabbling for cover during an israeli missile strike. have a look at the footage. the images you are seeing just took place in a residential neighbourhood in north—west gaza. bbc verify match the buildings position, colour and shape with satellite images and confirm it is on the northern side. and this is the moment that was filmed right next to the bbc broadcast position in gaza. take a look at this, it's incredible. as you can see, a building being flattened by an israeli missile strike. it was destroyed very close to the bbc broadcast position in gaza. that was filmed on saturday as israel began retaliatory strikes following the unprecedented attack by palestinian militants. another video has been released by the palestinian militant group hamas. it is north of the gaza strip. have a look at this. the al-qassam brigade released footage of an assault on the crossing between israel and gaza. this is carried out on sunday morning. let me just bring you these pictures from gaza. where a mosque in khan younis is among buildings damaged. this is al ameen mosque which was hit in an israeli strike this morning. there are copies of the koran scattered on the ground. i spoke to our reporter in gaza — rushdi abualouf a short while ago. i asked him what he knew about the warnings to citizens in gaza to leave their homes. yeah. we know that many families started to move. but in the last 10 minutes, about 5 to 6 airstrikes just hit the area where the israelis warned residents to leave. and that's, as we expected, the israeli air raid intensify in this area. the israeli army issued a small video directing people to leave this area and go to the city center. and they said we are going to attack hamas, a terrorist group that is attacking israel. since last night, when israel launched this, a retaliation operation in gaza, many areas people were leaving. and we understand from sources in the un that as many as 22,000 people already left their homes and now they are taking shelter in a un school. we have seen this scenario before as gaza fought like four wars or hamas fought four wars with israel in the last 17 years. and gaza, the people in gaza, they don't have any shelter facilities. so people usually what they do, they go to the un school because they believe that you are in a school, is protected by the un. and nobody will hit them there. also, we noticed that people are going to hospitals for the same reason. since last night, until now, we understand from security sources that about 280 targets have been hit by israel. most of them belong to hamas militants. they had tanks, they had military facilities, military infrastructure, even some police checkpoints, some police stations. a hamas bank was hit. buildings, high buildings were hit this morning. i have been in the gaza city center where like 11 storey building was completely destroyed and razed to the ground. the main road for the gaza downtown was closed for about two or 3 hours. and the situation, the humanitarian situation seems to be getting worse and worse with the israel cutting 80% of the electricity supplies into gaza. and already most of the internet lines are not working since yesterday. what's the feeling now amongst people who are in gaza who are trying to find shelter? how much fear is there of more to come from israel? yes, of course. i mean, people have a mixed feeling about what's going on. yesterday, there was some sense ofjoy. people were like celebrating, praising hamas fighters who in there, who the palestinians, majority of the palestinian in gaza believed that they were revenge by israel. the israeli action in the west bank, in al—aqsa mosque and also in gaza, they were like welcoming what hamas did. but in the other hand, today they started to feel the reality that it's a war. and war, people in this poor, densely populated place, they knew well what what war would mean for them. back in 2014, there was a war for about 50 days. and now with the electricity supplies not working, internet, israel shut all of the border around gaza and there is a fear of very soon we will have some sort of serious humanitarian crisis — a food and medicine and electricity, like don't come to this 2.3 million people here. that was our reporter there in gaza. let's get more on this with diana buttu in haifa. she is a lawyer and former palestinian peace negotiator. thank you so much diana forjoining us here on bbc news. let me ask you first of all, i know you are a former legal adviser for the palestinian president mahmoud abbas. i want to get your reaction to the the occupation itself is violent. and so to somehow expect that israel was not going to pay a price for 56 years of violence is to hide your head in the sand. while many of us are surprised by the scale of this, i am not at all surprised that this has happened. it is largely the failure of the international community to put the brakes on israel and finally ended military occupation. it is sad that he has come to this. but sadly, this is what palestinians have lived on the everyday for the past 56 years. and what the palestinian authorities? what is their role in all of theirs? they have been weakened, had they not, by all of this? ~ , , , weakened, had they not, by all of this? absolutely, but this is not a two-way occupation, _ this? absolutely, but this is not a two-way occupation, trail doing the occupying and it is up to israel to end it. again, it is sad that it has taken this for israel to see that it cannot have peace while at the same time palestinians are living under no freedom, with no freedom. while we are seeing shifts in terms of who are the players that are now in charge, at the end of the day, we know that this is israel's responsibility and it is up to israel to end its military role and it is up to the world community to send israel that message once and for all. * , . . send israel that message once and for all. * , ., ., ., send israel that message palestinian bodies that have been cold by israel, thousands of palestinian political prisoners and... a military occupation that has been in effect for 56 years. the idea that israel can continue business as usual is a fallacy and it is up to the world community to finally send israel the message. rather than blaming palestinians for the reaction, it is time to end it. the world community _ have peace, as long as palestinians are living without freedom. and if it means the world is going to keep its head in the sun, i'm sorry, but this is where we see a failure in international leadership. this is now the time to the will to stand up and say to israel, enough is enough. letters and the military occupation now rather than giving israel all of the carrots that it has gotten israeli society talking about is a military occupation, the elephant in the room. and i am hoping now that after all of this is done, that we do end “p all of this is done, that we do end up seeing israel has come and ask for specific assistance, and show you will hear more about that today and we will respond to that. we have the ability to do that. iran and hamas have a relationship, it wouldn't be where it is without that relationship. we don't have anything to show us that iran was directly involved in the attack. that's something that we are looking at very carefully. we have to see where the facts lead. we do know that iran has had a long relationship with hamas, it is one of the reasons we have been aggressively working to counter ran including sanctioning them for support provided to hamas. it is no surprise that those opposed to the talks, opposed to israel normalising relations with its neighbours and beyond the region are hamas, hezbollah and i ran. they want to derail these advancements was normalisation. it's very hard. challenging issues to work through and we are trying to do that, but the result would be, if we were able to get there, a much different
