it's the retrieval phase — listing, identifying who or what is left. ukraine is certain this wasn't just an act of war, but a war crime. translation: after investigation we can say it was a deliberate attack on civilians. i can't tell how they choose the targets because i don't understand their logic. the kremlin says it always targets military sites. we saw no evidence suggesting that this was one. here's what's left of the cafe. it's a deep wound, it's a picture of finality. you see the shop next door has been blown through as well. now, locals say hroza is spared the shelling other villages have to go through. that ended yesterday. for a moment hroza, meaning "thunderstorm," lived up to its name. some reminders of what happened might be washed away, but this small community has already been damaged. in the evening, this woman tells us she was here, at home, when she heard the explosion. translation: i ran out of the yard - and saw a plume of smoke. my husband rushed there. he came back and said our children are gone. our son—in—law was found dead but our daughter was still alive when emergency workers arrived. she told one of them, herfriend, "take me out, take me out." that's it, those were her last words. who would return my children to me? who? lyubov and her community's pain is palpable. her village is a darker place. james waterhouse, bbc news, hroza, kharkiv region. turning to us politics now. former house speaker kevin mccarthy says he'll finish his congressional term and run for re—election. he denied reports he's considering resigning from congress. it comes after eight hardline republicans joined democrats in removing mccarthy as house speaker earlier this week. now two republicans have announced they will run for mccarthy's old job — congressmanjim jordan of ohio on the left, and steve scalise of louisiana on the right. jim jordan chairs the house judiciary committee, where he launched probes into president biden, his son hunter, and the fbi. he also founded the far—right house freedom caucus and voted against $300 million in ukraine aid. his bid for speaker got a major boost, with an endorsement from former president donald trump. his rival, majority leader steve scalise, is the number—two ranking republican in the house of representatives. he's been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. and in 2017, scalise was gravely wounded during a shooting targeting republican members. 0n ukraine, scalise voted to approve that aid package last week. well, one of those who will have a say in selecting the next speaker of the house is mike lawler, the republican congressman from new york. i spoke with him a little earlier. thank you for being here. i want to start with former president donald trump. we are hearing he has endorsedjimjordan in the speaker's race. what's your reaction to that and how might trump's endorsement affect the race? ultimately this will be a decision made by the conference and the conference alone. the former president certainly is entitled to offer his opinion on it but i think the conference is going to be getting together on monday for what is going to be i think a rather long and blunt discussion about how we move forward. and obviously the focus will turn to the speaker's race and selecting a candidate who can receive 218 votes on the house floor. you voted of course to support former speaker kevin mccarthy. will you now vote to support either of these two top candidates, eitherjimjordan or steve scalise? i've not decided yet who i'll be supporting, i'm looking forward to the discussion. i think there is a lot of questions that need to be answered for whoever the next speaker is. and in large part, how we are going to effectively govern as a majority. what happened last week was disgusting, it was unnecessary, and torpedoed our very majority, and put a lot of it injeopardy going forward, frankly. so i think there needs to be a real reckoning within the conference and a discussion, and so i've not made any decisions yet as to who i will or won't support, but i think the conversation is necessary to make that determination. there is lots of work that needs to get done in the house, several appropriations bills the need to be passed. there is only funny for the government through mid—november. how concerned are you that a drawn—out process to select a new speaker could lead to another government shutdown? bring you up to the brink once again? we obviously avoided the potential of a shutdown with an agreement last saturday that put a 45—day cr in place. the objective is to choose a speaker as quickly as possible so we can get back to focusing on the issues that matter to the american people. starting with obviously our spending and the appropriations process, as well as securing our southern border and dealing with the migrant crisis that has impacted communities all across this country, including my home state of new york, and so, it is imperative that we have the time and the ability to deal with these issues before 17 november, and certainly try to get to the appropriations process. if we run up against the clock, as i said repeatedly, we cannot shut the government down and we would need to consider another cr, but it is imperative that we get back to work and focus on the issues that matter to the american people. republican representative mike lawler, thank you for taking the time to speak to us. thank you. so that's a republican view. for a view from across the aisle, my colleague sumi somaskanda spoke earlier with democratic congressman raja krishnamoorthi from illinois. congressmen, great to have you back on bbc news. it is not yet clear when there will be a vote for the speaker of the house, possibly wednesday. but from what you are hearing and seeing from your republican colleagues across the aisle, what you expect to see next week? i don't know. i always think i know what is going to happen and then i'm surprised when things unfold the way they do. on wednesday, i suspect we are actually going to see the balloting and elections and, some of your viewers might recall, this was a very interesting affair the last time this happened injanuary. i hope it's not as chaotic and it's not the circus it was back then. what do you make of the former president reportedly visiting the capitol on tuesday? i honestly don't know. some people say he is merely going to help unify people ahead of their elections on wednesday. other people think he is actually thinking of serving as a candidate and i think he put out on truth social that he is supporting jimjordan but he is also saying i'm open to be a unifying candidate. the short answer is i think wherever there is a tv camera and, in this case, wherever there is nojudge presiding in a courtroom i think donald trump will want to be there and i suspect he might appear at the capitol. congressman, you mention the namejimjordan, he seems to be, at the moment, the favourite to be the next speaker, at least from the republican side. would you, would democrats consider supporting him? i'm not sure about that, sumi. jimjordan is basically donald trump's lieutenant in congress and my big concern is thatjim jordan is potentially going to pursue an agenda to help donald trump's presidential campaign as opposed to doing what's in the best interests of the american people. when coupled with the fact that he has not really come out in favour of ukraine aid or a standalone package for ukraine, i don't think that i could support him. democratic, raja krishnamoorthi. well, whoever wins the speaker's role will have a direct impact on us policy towards ukraine. more specifically, washington's commitment to funding kyiv*s efforts in the war. for the view from ukraine, i spoke earlier with ukrainian mp 0leksiy goncharenko, who was on the move, aboard a train. thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us, even as we can see you are in transit. i want to get your reaction first of all to some of the political chaos we've seen in washington these past few days and now the uncertainty around new military funding for ukraine. it's very concerning because that is a critical moment. ukraine desperately needs this help and it's a pity ukraine became a ball in which was a game in the united states and i hope as president biden said and also leaders of the democrats and republicans said that it will be fixed. i just want to remind you and the us people that it is in the best interest not only of ukraine but of the united states too to support us in this war because it properly one of the best investments in history with 7% of us military budget we've destroyed at least 50% of russian military capacity and russia is the second biggest rival of the united states after china. you are there in ukraine and i want to get your perspective. if new military funding does not materialise, how would that affect your country on the battlefield? we cannot win the war if there is no military support from the united states. we will fight until the end because that's existential for us, to be or not to be, but it will be defence. no chance for but without the military surprise. recently we've seen some of the support, especially among republicans, forfunding to ukraine beginning to waver a little bit. what is your reaction to some of the lawmakers or republicans in congress who say simply the country cannot afford to keep issuing what they call a blank cheque to ukraine. it's not true. it is not a blank cheque. there is control in the united states about the support and again, this isjust several percents of us military budget. from the ground and if united states could not afford now to help us financially and militarily, sooner or later the united states will lose the lives of their soldiers and officers to stop the russian army. 0leksiy goncharenko, ukrainian mp in transit on the train there, thank you forjoining us. thank you. here are other stories making headlines: at least 18 people have died, including three children, when a bus carrying migrants crashed in the southern mexican state of oaxaca. officials say the 55 passengers on board were venezuelan and haitian nationals travelling north towards the border with the united states. the nobel peace prize has been awarded to a jailed iranian human rights activist. narges mohammadi is being honoured for herfight against the oppression of women in iran, where she's played a leading role in the movement against the mandatory wearing of hijabs. the former chief executive of the global fashion brand abercrombie & fitch and his british partner are facing allegations of exploitation from men recruited for sex events they hosted around the world. a bbc investigation has found a highly organised operation running the events, with a middleman finding young adult men for mikejeffries and his partner, matthew smith. eight men told the bbc they attended these events. some of them allege they were exploited or abused. mrjeffries and mr smith have not responded to requests for comment. rianna croxford has the story. in early 2000, abercrombie & fitch became one of the hottest labels in the us and around the world. sexualised imagery and provocative billboards turned the teen retailer, which also owns the hollister brand, into a multibillion—dollar sensation. the man behind the vision was then ceo mikejeffries. mike was tireless. he was very energetic and boisterous. he was an incredibly big personality. he would explode into a room. bbc panorama has uncovered a highly organised international operation recruiting young adult men for sex with mikejeffries over several years, when he was the ceo of the brand. this experience, i think it broke me and it mentally messed me up. two men have agreed to tell me their accounts on camera. they attended separate events hosted by mikejeffries in 2010 and 2011. both men say they were recruited and auditioned by a middleman, james jacobson, known to the men as *jim'. david says mrjacobson led him to believe he was pursuing a modelling opportunity. take one. i was made to believe this is where everybody gets their start, this is where you want to get your start. it was like he was selling fame. and the price was compliance. david says compliance meant engaging in a sexual act with mrjacobson. seven more men i've spoken to say they also met with jim. the men say mrjacobson was part of a well—oiled machine which included recruiters, drivers and other staff. mrjacobson told the bbc any encounters were fully consensual, not coercive. he said he had no recollection of making promises of modelling opportunities and that everyone who he came into contact with who attended these events went in with their eyes wide open. this is the route that the men would've taken on the way to the hamptons when they were going to go meet with mike jeffries. this is the rouet the men would then go to an event hosted by mrjeffries and his british partner, matthew smith, somewhere held at their home here in the exclusive new york coastal community, the hamptons. barrett said he was introduced to mrjacobson by an older model who he felt indebted to and knew that would be some kind of sexual activity. david says he was not expecting sex to take place at the hamptons. i was taken — chaperoned over to the main house to the doors that entered into the bedroom, where everything was happening. and then, told to disrobe. barrett says he engaged in intimate act with another man. david says mrjeffries had sex with him. i didn't feel safe to, like, say no or, "i don't feel "comfortable with this". i don't know what would have happened. i didn't feel like i had any choice. he said he felt leaving was not an option because mr jeffries' private staff was supervising the event, including in the bedroom. they also say they were asked to sign non—disclosure agreements beforehand and were not given any copies to take away. i feel like they were trying to scare us. that's what it felt like — it felt like intimidation. both men were paid around $2500 after the events they attended, still hoping it may lead to modelling work, david went to further events with mrjeffries and smith, both in the us and around the world. two us lawyers who reviewed evidence uncovered by the bbc said prosecutors should investigate whether the allegations could amount to sex trafficking. the bbc has made repeated attempts to contact mrjeffries and mrsmith. they have not responded. it said a new executive leadership team has reformed the company's culture, adding the company has zero tolerance for abuse, harassment or discrimination of any kind. rianna croxford, bbc news. earlier, my colleague sumi somaskanda spoke with one of the men featured in the documentary, barrett pall. barrett, great to have you. what has the reaction been since the documentary*s release? since the documentary*s release, it seems that the general reaction is that people are not surprised, which i'm grateful for, which ultimately means that people are believing me, which i think is any survivor's greatest fear when coming forward. but, as a whole, i think i have stepped into a survival technique to just not look at what people are saying because while a lot of people believe me and there has been a lot of support, there are also still people who are shaming and making uneducated and ignorant comments. what do you think this might mean for other men? my biggest hope is that this would be the spark of a much bigger conversation for other men to start understanding how we are also survivors and also very much able to be a victim to abuse in many different ways. unfortunately, i think many men have told themselves that they are not able to be a victim. it's a big part of toxic masculinity and something that i hope to really deconstruct and educate more people as well as just men about. that's a really powerful point you make there. beyond this investigation, what would you like to say to other men who maybe have shared similar experiences in the past but haven't been able to talk about it? yeah, i would love for other men to know you are not alone, that you don't have to suffer in silence, and that as we start to understand how we are also victims, we can then become survivors and then, hopefully, one day, in some way, thrive throughout live. do you think we are seeing the metoo movement experience expand to men's experiences as well? i really hope we are. i really, really hope that we are starting to see more men become involved in the metoo experience. i'm a big believer that none of us are doing well in the current society that exists. i don't believe in winners and losers. i think right now, we either have two sets of winners or two sets of losers and i think we are all losing in the current status of what the world is right now. all right. thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. thank you. since the bbc started reporting this investigation, mikejeffries' lawyer issued a statement saying: the abercrombie guys: the dark side of cool is available in the us on bbc select and the seven—part podcast world of secrets season one: the abercrombie guys is out now on bbc sounds or wherever you get your podcasts. turning to climate use. —— news. scientists say the number of days where temperatures peaked above these live pictures of london as we hand off to our colleagues there. there's the predawn hours there. i'm carl nasman. thanks for watching bbc news. hello. this weekend is going to bring us some huge weather contrasts. for many parts of the uk, it is going to be an exceptionally warm weekend for october — that warm air pushing up from the south around this area of high pressure — but colder air digging down from the north and along the battleground between those two air masses, an active and slow—moving weather front which is going to bring heavy and persistent rain of parts of scotland. we have this met office amber warning — the potential that some places could see close to 180mm of rain, especially up over higher ground. certainly enough rain across the warning area to give some issues with flooding and travel disruption. and as you can see, a wet start to saturday across many parts of scotland and that band of rain very slow moving through the day. whereas for northern ireland, western parts of england and wales, a bit of a murky start. that should tend to lift and clear to give some spells of sunshine. certainly, central and eastern parts of england seeing some spells of hazy sunshine through the day. but all the while, the rain continues across those central and some northern parts of scotland, where it will feel decidedly chilly — just nine degrees in aberdeen. compare that with 2a or 25 degrees across parts of south east england. now, during saturday night, the rain continues. i think the heaviest rain will tend to pull northwards across scotland. something a little bit drier developing for some of those central and southern parts. further south, some clear spells. there'll be some mist and fog patches, too. a mild night for many but quite cold in the far north of scotland, particularly shetland, just to the north of this weather front. as we head into sunday, this front will still be plaguing some northern parts of the uk but the heaviest rain this time will be across the far north of scotland and into 0rkney. further south, just that little bit drier. and for northern ireland, england and wales, any early mist and fog should tend to clear. it could stay a bit murky for some coasts but we will see some spells of sunshine. not quite as warm on sunday — still up to around 23 degrees, 12 for stornoway and for aberdeen. now, the new week starts on a warm note, particularly down towards the south, but as we head through the middle part of the week, this active weather front is set to push southwards and that will introduce north—westerly winds and something more typical, really, for this time of year. so, temperatures by the end of the coming week back down closer to where we'd expect them to be at this time of year. v0|ceover: this is bbc news. we'll have the headlines and all the main news stories for you at the top of the hour, straight after this programme. yeah. so if you can just start off just introducing was the leader of a right—wing extremist group. he stands accused of trying to overthrow the us government. well, the proud boys were central because they were ready and willing to fight. so was tarrio the puppet master, or something else? i think he was kind of nerdy when he was younger. all of a sudden with proud boys, he was the fonz. i think he's very interested in his image. i think he might be a charlatan, to be perfectly honest. tarrio is loved and loathed in equal measure. can you hear it? can you hear this? suourme their entire stupid | message has become about me and i could comes after eight hardline republicans joined democrats in removing mccarthy as house speaker earlier this week. now two republicans have announced they will run for mccarthy's old job — congressmanjim jordan of ohio on the left, and steve scalise of louisiana on the right. jim jordan chairs the house judiciary committee, where he launched probes into president biden, his son hunter, and the fbi. he also founded the far—right house freedom caucus and voted against $300 million in ukraine aid. his bid for speaker got a major boost, with an endorsement from former president donald trump. his rival, majority leader steve scalise, is the number—two ranking republican in the house of representatives. he's been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. and in 2017, scalise was gravely wounded during a shooting targeting republican members.
