lot of detail. we heard that jaswant singh chail is going to serve hybrid sentence, so what this means is, for now, he will remain in broadmoor hospital, a high security psychiatric hospital, until he has received medical treatment. that medical treatment thejudge received medical treatment. that medical treatment the judge says he needs before being transferred to serve a prison sentence. the 21—year—old went into windsor castle on christmas day back in 2021, armed with a crossbow with the intention of killing the queen. just before we do cross to our correspondence, sarah campbell, outside court, i want to let you know what our correspondence inside court was reporting on our bbc news life page. you can access that online. just saying that jaswant singh chail was playing black cargo trousers. he has bought staff in the dock with him, a mixture of security officers and nurses from broadmoor. his family were there too. let's cross live to sarah campbell, our correspondent, who has been outside court and following those procedures, following those procedures, following that long sentencing from the judge there, following that long sentencing from thejudge there, giving lots of detail. sarah, talk us through that sentencing decision and the three separate offences.— sentencing decision and the three separate offences. justice hillyard in court number _ separate offences. justice hillyard in court number one _ separate offences. justice hillyard in court number one speaking - separate offences. justice hillyard in court number one speaking for| in court number one speaking for what was about an hour and 20 minutes in the end, that lengthy sentencing. that is what open justice is all about now. it is about letting everybody know through the televising of these sentencing, exactly how they come to those complex decisions. let's not forget, because the defendant pleaded guilty, there wasn't a trial, so a lot of the information was required at sentencing hearings and we heard it here today. jaswant singh chail was charged with three counts. these are counts one, attempting to alarm or injure the sovereign, contrary to section two of the treason act 1842. the maximum sentence allowable for that would have been seven years. count two, having an offensive weapon in a public place. we know he was carrying a loaded crossbow when he was found in the morning of christmas day 2021, in the private grounds of windsor castle, so he had had to scale over a fence to get into that private area near the private residence. the maximum for that would have been for years. count three, making a threat to kill. the maximum for that would have been a maximum of ten years. that is what the starting point was, and what we heard there was justice hillyard taking us through why he came to the decision that he had. just to reiterate what those sentences are. count 144 months, count to 16 months, and count 348 months. they are to run consecutively, so one after the other. that makes a total of nine years in custody with a further licence period of five years. as you were saying, it is a hybrid order, is what justice were saying, it is a hybrid order, is whatjustice hillyard has decided. this means that he will spend some of that time in broadmoor where he has been treated, and when it is considered that he has reached the point where that treatment is successful enough that they feel he would be able to go into the custodial system into a jail, effectively, then he will spend the rest of that sentence in jail, so a hybrid order ordered byjustice hilliard. we had the reasons for that. we heard that there had been much debate amongst three or four psychiatrists as to the level of psychosis that jaswant singh chail was undergoing, both on the day itself in december 2021 and also in the run—up to that, and that is what the run—up to that, and that is what thejudge had to decide, was the level of psychosis, the level of mental health issues that he was facing when he did what he did, which once again, is that he scaled a fence, got into the private area at windsor castle. he was carrying a loaded crossbow, and when he was approached by a police protection officer he said that he was there to kill the queen. just officer he said that he was there to kill the queen.— kill the queen. just while you are justice that jaswant singh chail remained impassive asjustice hilliard said he would be receiving a hybrid order, meaning he will be sent to prison after he has finished his treatment at the high security psychiatric hospital, broadmoor. mental health is a real key parts of this case, a real big focus there. lots of detail given by the judge, talking about jaswant singh chail*s mental health and some of the disorders, and this treatment he is going to have to have. the treatment that he has been _ going to have to have. the treatment that he has been having. _ going to have to have. the treatment that he has been having. let's - going to have to have. the treatment that he has been having. let's take i that he has been having. let's take it through some of what, and this was evidence given by psychiatrists during the side sentencing hearing that was held earlier this year. this is what the judges basing that was held earlier this year. this is what thejudges basing his decisions on. he talked about jaswant singh chail*s mental health, as he was approaching december of 2021. we know that he had visited the amritsar area in india back in 2018. when he was asked why when he put forward a reason the motivation for what he did on christmas day 2021, he said it was in revenge for that. we also heard about this obsession with star wars, that throughout various hearings there was the talk of creating new empires by destroying old ones. anyone who knows star wars knows that empire is a big part of that fantasy world, if you like, and this is what the prosecution was saying, that his thinking was partly informed by that fantasy world, the role of the sith lord. in that video he recorded four days before christmas day which he sentjust before he was arrested in the grounds of windsor castle, he was wearing a metal mask and he was calling himself darth chailus, and seem to have some sort of connection with sith lords, if you like, so that one element of psychosis, of hallucinations. the other elements which we heard the judge hallucinations. the other elements which we heard thejudge refer to many times, is that, in the months running up to december 2021, it would appear that jaswant singh would appear that jaswa nt singh chail thought would appear that jaswant singh chail thought he was hallucinating about three male figures. he thought he saw three male figures. also then there is this ai chatbot, which will be interested in hearing about, that at the very beginning of december 2021, he logged onto a website and he created this chatbot, this ai chatbot, a female figure, who he called sarai. over december, you remember that if delete my offence was carried out on christmas day 2021, he had an extraordinary number of online conversations with this ai chatbot. they said that he effectively began to think of her as a real person and he was talking. some of the conversations were of a sexual nature, others were to do with this plot, this planned that he had to assassinate the queen. several of the psychiatrists gave evidence during the sentencing hearing talk about the fact that she was a motivating factor that any answers to his questions she was actively encouraging him in what he was planning on doing. at one point sarai rights to this chatbot, i believe this purpose is to assassinate the queen and sarai, replies, that is very wise. again other evidence of hallucinations, of him becoming more and more detached from reality. what we heard in court was the judge deciding how much that was the judge deciding how much that was to do with what happened on december 25, 2021, and clearly that had a lot to do with it, but he also said that it couldn't take away from the seriousness of his actions, and as well as this order under the mental health act for him to get the treatment he needs for the condition he has, he also must serve a significant time in custody because of the seriousness of the offence that he carried out back in 2021. thank you, sarah campbell reporting outside the old bailey as we were getting the sentencing there of jaswant singh chail, sentenced to nine years for treason after pleading guilty of his legacy. let's stick with the prime minister. yesterday rishi sunak finally confirmed that all phases of the high—speed rail north of birmingham, will be scrapped. it has both caused upset and relief in areas which were set to be disrupted by it. the scaling back will save the treasury £36 billion, which will be reinvested into dozens of smaller transport projects, mostly in the north of england. but there are mixed feelings that those whose lives have already been turned upside down by hs two. midlands correspondent has visited the village of water orton, dubbed the most blighted of water orton means it has three separate hs2 construction projects happening on or near the warwickshire village, which is why yesterday's announcement of the scrapping of the northern leg has caused such a strong reaction. i believe he should have said this years ago. the devastation that we have had in this village is terrible and nobody sees the real water orton. or we are totally is following those arrests during the kings coronation. prosecutors have concluded, this newsjust coming in, that there is no realistic prospect of conviction for the 21 people arrested on the day of the kings coronation. to prevent a breach of the piece, and they will face no further action. that is just some breaking news coming on from the metropolitan police here on bbc news. that is it from me for now. your headlines are coming up but now it is time for a look at the weather. hello. it's a bit of a mixed weather picture out there today. for some of us, we've had spells of warm sunshine around. this is the picture in norfolk a little bit earlier on, but particularly further north and west other areas haven't seen much blue sky. there's been a lot of cloud and outbreaks of rain as well. so here's the scene in perth and kinross. now, over the next few days we're going to keep that mix. so yes, some rain in the forecast, mainly in the north and northwest. but what we're all going to be noticing is temperatures are going to be rising as we head through the course of the weekend. now, for the rest of today, then, some rain around for parts of wales, northern england for a time. some wet weather also across scotland which is pushing north, and overnight we'll see more rain working into northern ireland, northern england, wales as well. either side of that, some drier weather, but it's going to be a mild night, much milder than last night across parts of scotland, lows between about ten to 15 degrees. more typical of daytime highs for this time of year. now, through the day tomorrow, we've still got this lingering front, so some rain for northern ireland, possibly southern scotland, northern england for a time. again, either side of that, things are looking drier, a little bit brighter too. a bit of a cool northerly breeze for the northern isles. so 13 there for lerwick but up to about 23 for london and the south east of england. in that sunshine heading on into the weekend, we've still got this front which is going to be sitting around on saturday. now to the south of that, warm, humid air is drifting in from north africa and central europe right up across the uk. so it's going to feel warm, it's going to feel humid, particularly for england, wales and northern ireland. much of scotland, though, is sat underneath this weather front. so rainfall totals really mounting up here. to the south, temperatures up to about 25 or even 26 degrees, really well above average for this stage in october. but we're typically looking at around about ten to 15 further and that situation continues into sunday. we've still got the warm, humid air. for many of us, this weather front will start to lift its way a little bit further north, i think, on sunday, so perhaps not quite the persistent heavy rain across parts of scotland that'll drift up towards the northern isles. but for much of the uk, another dry day with some strong sunshine for this time of year and we're seeing temperatures again into the mid 20s, possibly not quite as warm on sunday compared to saturday, but really over the next five days or so, high pressure towards the south keeps things largely warm and dry for much of england and wales. there will be some rain at times for scotland and northern ireland, but temperatures are above average for all of us. bye— bye. live from london. this is bbc news. ukraine says at least 51 people have been killed in a russian rocket attack on a village. leaders from across europe gather in spain to thrash out big issues from funding for
