this is bbc news — it's newsday. welcome to the programme. starting with news in the us where its been a busy day for politics, with president biden at the centre of events — both willingly and unwillingly. the day began with the republicans in congress launching impeachment hearings. they accuse him of profiting from his son's business ventures while serving as vice president. it's worth noting that several previous investigations, including one by thejustice department, hasn't found any evidence of that, but the republicans say there is a case to answer. the house oversight and accountability committee has uncovered a mountain of evidence revealing howjoe biden abused his public office for his family's financial gain. the years, president biden has lied to the american people about his knowledge of and participation in his family's corrupt as schemes. —— business. while that was happening in washington, president biden was making his way to arizona, where he made the latest of his set piece speeches as he campaigns for re—election. this one was about threats to democracy and it's pretty clear where he thinks they're coming from. and there is something dangerous happening in america now. there is an extremist movement and it does not share the basic beliefs in our democracy. the maga movement. not every republican, not even the majority of republicans subscribed to the maga ideology. they know because they have been able to work with republicans my whole career. but there's no question today's republican party is driven and intimidated by maga extremists. there are extreme representative carried out in all the institutions we know it. earlier, i spoke to sean dilley, our correspondent in washington, to get the latest. there is no history of any present successfully being removed from office, because once an impeachment process happens it's then down to the upper chamber in congress, the senate, to vote by a 2000 majority to remove that person from office. we saw that with both donald trump's impeachments and before that the senate would not do the —— two—thirds. there is a 51—30 —— 49 democrat majority. there is not really much chance of that. why now? the speaker, kevin mccarthy, is under a loss of pressure from the hard—line republican party, people including, say, matt gaetz and marjorie taylor greene, head of what is looking like, increasingly, a government shutdown this sunday. the politicians in congress have got till midnight on saturday to reach a deal there. what this is about is mr mccarthy keeping that support of the hard—line of the republican party stopping himself has said he not even move towards impeachment proceedings without a vote on the house, you know, of congress, men and women, socially, of the house of representatives. he did go ahead anyway. he buckled under ahead anyway. he buckled under a lot of pressure. you have to bearin a lot of pressure. you have to bear in mind that the speaker in congress is not like speak in, for example, the uk house of commons or the canadian house of commons. like his democratic party predecessor, nancy pelosi, kevin mccarthy is a highly partisan political operator and he is playing to the ground because ultimately he is worried about his own position. sean dilley reporting there. as forformer president as for former president donald trump he was not in the public eye but there is one new slide report. his lawyers have now said he will not be seeking to move a criminal case that alleges he was part of a conspiracy to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss in georgia from a state court to a federal court. now, that could shorten the time it would take for a trial involving mr strom to take place. no date has been set for that though it is unlikely it was not until early next year. mr trump denies those allegations. to the big headline that came out of europe now. the dutch police have arrested a gunman after three people died in shootings in the city of rotterdam. officers say the 32—year—old opened fire in a house before setting it on fire, then entered a local medical centre opening fire. anna disease with hospitals overwhelmed. bbc bengali service corresponent akbar hossain gave us an update of the situation from dhaka. this is a very extraordinary situation. we have seen this monsoon. i have got the just published figure by the bangladesh's health department, which says that nearly 200,000 people have been tested positive for dengue and nearly 1000 people died. and in the last several months and the death figure is increasing every day. and we can see that every day 13 to 15 people are dying in recent weeks and the number of infected people infected with dengue is increasing every day. initially, it started in dhaka city. the dengue outbreak, the mosquito borne viral fever. now it is spread across the country in all 64 districts and patients are increasing in bangladesh's rural areas. as you mentioned earlier, the hospitals are overwhelming many hospitals in bangladesh are now over capacity. so they are struggling to cope with the patient. and many hospitals are facing the shortage of intravenous fluid, which is necessary to treat their dengue patients, to rehydrate them. so in the meantime, you know, the government has launched awareness campaign to prevent dengue, but with no success. many experts say that this issue, when they warned that the dengue outbreak might be at the severe stage, but it was not taken care of by the authorities because they thought it was a seasonal disease and it might go away. so there was no long term planning to curb mosquito and to fight against mosquito and because this is a mosquito borne viral disease. the maldives will be choosing a new president this weekend in a run—off race that has been framed as a choice between new delhi, on one hand, and beijing's on the other. the incumbent developed close diplomatic and commercial relations with india while his challenger advocates closer ties with china. but the geopolitical rivalry is hanging over an election that is dominated by issues from terrorism to climate change. earlier — i spoke to azim zahir — a maldives analyst and a lecturer at the university of western australia. i asked him if the maldives was caught in a tug—of—war between india and china. there is a truth to some extent to that. in fact if you look at the opposition campaign, one of the key pledges is that independent sovereignty is under threat and that is from india so a key pledge keep for him is that if he gets elected he would be seen to send back indian technical and navy personnel stationed in the maldives. so one of his key pledges is that he's going to send back these indian personnel present in the maldives and a core part of his voter base, the most vocal part has been conducting an india 0ut campaign and that will not be taken very positively by the other. if the opposition gets elected then there could be a very serious diplomatic row between the two. from a local perspective, the kind of rivalry between india and china doesn't completely define this election. there are a lot of issues that are more locally driven but to the extent that international affaires are concerned, this is definitely a contest between two political parties with completely different sides when it comes to india — china rivalry and the growing competition within the indian ocean. the barbie film has found its way into russian cinema this is bbc news — it's newsday. welcome to the programme. starting with news in the us where its been a busy day for politics, with president biden at the centre of events — both willingly and unwillingly. the day began with the republicans in congress launching impeachment hearings. they accuse him of profiting from his son's business ventures while serving as vice president. it's worth noting that several previous investigations, including one by thejustice department, hasn't found any evidence of that, but the republicans say there is a case to answer. the house oversight and accountability committee has uncovered a mountain of evidence revealing howjoe biden abused his public office for his family's financial gain. the years, president biden has lied to the american people about his knowledge of and participation in his family's corrupt as schemes. —— business. while that was happening in washington, president biden was making his way to arizona, where he made the latest of his set piece speeches as he campaigns for re—election. this one was about threats to democracy and it's pretty clear where he thinks they're coming from. and there is something dangerous happening in america now. there is an extremist movement and it does not share the basic beliefs in our democracy. the maga movement. not every republican, not even the majority of republicans subscribed to the maga ideology. they know because they have been able to work with republicans my whole career. but there's no question today's republican party is driven and intimidated by maga extremists. there are extreme representative carried out in all the institutions we know it. earlier, i spoke to sean dilley, our correspondent in washington, to get the latest. there is no history of any present successfully being removed from office, because once an impeachment process happens it's then down to the upper chamber in congress, the senate, to vote by a 2000 majority to remove that person from office. we saw that with both donald trump's impeachments and before that the senate would not do the —— two—thirds. there is a 51—30 —— 49 democrat majority. there is not really much chance of that. why now? the speaker, kevin mccarthy, is under a loss of pressure from the hard—line republican party, people including, say, matt gaetz and marjorie taylor greene, head of what is looking like, increasingly, a government shutdown this sunday. the politicians in congress have got till midnight on saturday to reach a deal there. what this is about is mr mccarthy keeping that support of the hard—line of the republican party stopping himself has said he not even move towards impeachment proceedings without a vote on the house, you know, of congress, men and women, socially, of the house of representatives. he did go ahead anyway. he buckled under ahead anyway. he buckled under a lot of pressure. you have to bearin a lot of pressure. you have to bear in mind that the speaker in congress is not like speak in, for example, the uk house of commons or the canadian house of commons. like his democratic party predecessor, nancy pelosi, kevin mccarthy is a highly partisan political operator and he is playing to the ground because ultimately he is worried about his own position. sean dilley reporting there. as forformer president as for former president donald trump he was not in the public eye but there is one new slide report. his lawyers have now said he will not be seeking to move a criminal case that alleges he was part of a conspiracy to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss in georgia from a state court to a federal court. now, that could shorten the time it would take for a trial involving mr strom to take place. no date has been set for that though it is unlikely it was not until early next year. mr trump denies those allegations. to the big headline that came out of europe now. the dutch police have arrested a gunman after three people died in shootings in the city of rotterdam. officers say the 32—year—old opened fire in a house before setting it on fire, then entered a local medical centre opening fire. anna their property, they are also surrounding their long dream of independence. let's now take a look at some other stories in the headlines. an american soldier has landed backin an american soldier has albus dumbledore in six of the harry potter films, has died in hospital at the age of 82. sir michael, who won four tv baftas, worked across television, film, radio, and theatre in a career that spanned nearly six decades. david sillito looks back on his career. welcome, welcome to another year at hogwarts. michael gambon as dumbledore. a great acting talent who never took it too seriously. tom! tom, you are sitting here! 0h, back where i started? his stage breakthrough was in alan ayckbourn*s the norman conquests, and in particular, a scene in which he ends up dining on the little chair. you are all right where you are. good evening. carry on, talk amongst yourselves. no, not that one. the table was down like that. i actually saw a bloke one night fall out of his seat in the circle, laughing. i mean, you couldn't stop them. the whole house up. brilliant. i'm sorry, the shame... but it was the tv drama the singing detective that truly made him a household name. however, his screen career had begun... i'm gavin kerr! ..with a bit of scottish swashbuckling in the borderers. he left school without any qualifications, but he had a talent for acting which led to dozens of roles on stage and screen. here's your chance to improve your table conversation. here, in the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover, with helen mirren. i'm going to smile when i think about mike, because he was incredibly funny. he had this natural irish sense of humour. naughty, but very, very funny. an extraordinary actor. what do you want? i brought you some coffee. if i wanted coffee, i'd have rung for it. and we will all miss him a lot. his name was also famously attached to a certain corner on top gear. laughter. applause he enjoyed the accolade. he had a taste for devilment and hoodwinking gullible journalists. please... dumbledore and harry potter may have brought him a new global recognition, but he was defiantly un—starry. he described his face as looking like an old wet bag. but in beckett's ehjoe, he could use it to hold an audience without saying a word. beneath that cloak of mischief was a seriously good actor. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. disease with hospitals overwhelmed. bbc bengali service corresponent akbar hossain gave us an update of the situation from dhaka. this is a very extraordinary situation. we have seen this monsoon. i have got the just published figure by the bangladesh's health department, which says that nearly 200,000 people have been tested positive for dengue and nearly 1000 people died. and in the last several months and the death figure is increasing every day. and we can see that every day 13 to 15 people are dying in recent weeks and the number of infected people infected with dengue is increasing every day. initially, it started in dhaka city. the dengue outbreak, the mosquito borne viral fever. now it is spread across the country in all 64 districts and patients are increasing in bangladesh's rural areas. as you mentioned earlier, the hospitals are overwhelming many hospitals in bangladesh are now over capacity. so they are struggling to cope with the patient. and many hospitals are facing the shortage of intravenous fluid, which is necessary to treat their dengue patients, to rehydrate them. so in the meantime, you know, the government has launched awareness campaign to prevent dengue, but with no success. many experts say that this issue, when they warned that the dengue outbreak might be at the severe stage, but it was not taken care of by the authorities because they thought it was a seasonal disease and it might go away. so there was no long term planning to curb mosquito and to fight against mosquito and because this is a mosquito borne viral disease. the maldives will be choosing a new president this weekend in a run—off race that has been framed as a choice between new delhi, on one hand, and beijing's on the other. the incumbent developed close diplomatic and commercial relations with india while his challenger advocates closer ties with china. but the geopolitical rivalry is hanging over an election that is dominated by issues from terrorism to climate change. earlier — i spoke to azim zahir — a maldives analyst and a lecturer at the university of western australia. i asked him if the maldives was caught in a tug—of—war between india and china. there is a truth to some extent to that. in fact if you look at the opposition campaign, one of the key pledges is that independent sovereignty is under threat and that is from india so a key pledge keep for him is that if he gets elected he would be seen to send back indian technical and navy personnel stationed in the maldives. so one of his key pledges is that he's going to send back these indian personnel present in the maldives and a core part of his voter base, the most vocal part has been conducting an india 0ut campaign and that will not be taken very positively by the other. if the opposition gets elected then there could be a very serious diplomatic row between the two. from a local perspective, the kind of rivalry between india and china doesn't completely define this election. there are a lot of issues that are more locally driven but to the extent that international affaires are concerned, this is definitely a contest between two political parties with completely different sides when it comes to india — china rivalry and the growing competition within the indian ocean. the barbie film has found its way into russian cinema
