The last thing that saudi arabia and russia want to do a spiral of the World Economy into a recession which will damage their demand in the first place so this 90 is roughly at this which i think for both of those countries, especially saudi arabia, because what they care about is a fiscal break even, the price that oil should be for this government to be able to meet all of its expenditures, all of its social expenditures, all of its social expenditures, so keeping that level is where they want to keep it. Briefly if you can, where does that leave us in the battle against inflation if oil is going up again . Inflation had nicely cooled for a while and was playing into the central bank playbook practice threatens that once again. This could be seen as a transitory thing, a small, temporary movement and therefore it can ignore it or will they have to act on the back of it . I personally think Central Banks will keep Interest Rates at a higher level for a longerjust to mitigate some of these risks, we dont necessarily need to increase Interest Rates that much more and were trying to communicate the fact thatis were trying to communicate the fact that is Spare Capacity out there that is Spare Capacity out there that could be utilised and therefore bring prices a bit lower, in due course. , ~ bring prices a bit lower, in due course. , ~ , bring prices a bit lower, in due course. , ~ i. , bring prices a bit lower, in due course. , ~. ,. , bring prices a bit lower, in due course. ~ i. ,. , course. But we have heard just one update from reuters reporting that dutch police are confirming that those shootings have caused multiple deaths. We dont have an exact number yet. But confirmation that there are multiple deaths in that incident. We will bring you more as we get it. Moving on to the actor, Sir Michael Gambon, who has died peacefully in hospital at the age of 82. Sir michael, who won four tv baftas, worked across tv, film, radio and theatre in a career spanning five decades. In recent years he played Albus Dumbledore in six of the harry potter films. He a titan the british stage and screen that we have lost. We celebrate him today because the performances that he made are somewhat indelible. Anyone who has seen him live in the theatre will be marked for ever by the enormity of the performance. I myself remember seeing him in a view from the bridge, the Arthur Miller play, he won an 0livier award for that. His performance in that blew me away. I thought about acting and this enormous, i had a cheap seat right on the gods and i could see right on the gods and i could see right down into his eye and he looked at me at one stage, and he has been doing ever since on screen, i see that twinkle in his eye whether he is a gangster or a Twinkly Headmaster of hogwarts. Like a man how will he be remembered in Acting Circles . He was known as the great gambon . He could be, he was joked about being quite a hammy actor but he was an actor of the old school, schooled under Laurence Olivier so he could do these 0livier so he could do these enormous experient performances and when it got to the small screen, when it got to the small screen, when he was in the singing detective, 0r he was in maigret, he could be contained, 0r he could be awful, and he was a superb Gangster Injames bond 0pposite daniel craig who could channel threat even as he sat 0n who could channel threat even as he sat on a hot tub. Labour has dropped plans to end the charitable status for private schools but it will still force independent schools that charge value added tax on their fees. That is if it wins the next general election. Labour leader sir keir starmer has previously said charitable status Market Private schools could not be justified. Lets speak to our Political Correspondent iain watson. Just put this into context for us. It appears to be a u turn. This into context for us. It appears to be a uturn this into context for us. A year ago, The Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Philipsen said very clearly, labour will scrap clearly, labour will scrap charitable stack clearly, labour will scrap charitable stack status for private schools to fund the most ambitious gates new Building Plan in a generation. , but i will not scrap the charitable status that some private schools enjoy so in that senseit private schools enjoy so in that sense it is a u turn but if you go back to the 2090 labour manifesto underjeremy corbyn, he talked about closing Tax Loopholes rather than talking about charitable status 2019 manifesto. That is a policy that the labour party seem to have returned to. The substance of this, is there much difference from what i previously promised . They will charge all private schools including those who dont have charitable status vat on school fees, which the sector says it does not want because some of the less well off private schools might find that difficult to absorb and would have to write up their fees. Absorb and would have to write up theirfees. There absorb and would have to write up their fees. There will be ending Business Rates relief as well giving the charitable status schools and 80 discount so that would end under labour but at the margins there are some differences. The fee paying schools at the moment would be entirely exempt because of their charitable status from paying tax on their profits or investments, so a question for The Shadow Education Secretary is this, youre going to impose vat on private schools but we do subsequently come back later perhaps in a later government and look at charitable status . After all, there are still some Tax Loopholes associated with that. Bind loopholes associated with that. And we will be able to put that question to her. Thank you to our Political Correspondent, iain watson. We can speak to Bridget Philipsen, The Shadow Education Secretary. Great to have you on the programme. Ian was just reminding us that, during the parliamentary debate on taxation of schools you said that charitable status for most private schools are something that should come to an end, so is this a u turn . In that debate i was quoting robert halfon, a former conservative Education Minister who was making the case for more teachers paid for by ending tax breaks and that is exactly what i intend to do, our intention is to deliver rising standards in State Schools with more teachers, better support for our youngest children as they arrive in school, for Language Development and we will pay for that by ending the tax breaks that private schools enjoy around vat and Business Rates which are not justified nowadays. Business rates which are not justified nowadays. Coming to the auestion justified nowadays. Coming to the question raised justified nowadays. Coming to the question raised by justified nowadays. Coming to the question raised by ian, justified nowadays. Coming to the question raised by ian, this justified nowadays. Coming to the question raised by ian, this is question raised by ian, this is fundamentally about closing some of those Tax Loopholes and making sure that there are enough funds to fund State Schools as well. Is there going to be any looking at those profits and investments that private schools, especially the private schools, especially the private schools in the top tier, that they are able to take out of their businesses, as it were . Mr; are able to take out of their businesses, as it were . My focus is on makin businesses, as it were . My focus is on making sure businesses, as it were . My focus is on making sure we businesses, as it were . My focus is on making sure we deliver on making sure we deliver against State Education for every child, so we will be ending those tax breaks and putting money into State Schools with more teachers and more support. The vast majority of pupils attend State Schools, and they have High Aspirations for what they want to achieve. Today we have seen the Prime Minister against speaking and insulting terms about the aspirations of parents who send their children to State Schools. He just does not seem to get that is a real pressure on the system right now, hes presiding over that and there are political choices to make, so the political choices of an incoming Labour Government would be to end those tax benefits and to put that money into more teachers, Better Mental Health support and more support for our younger children too, that is the difference that people would see under a Labour Government. Like some independent schools are not really for wealthy parents who can afford to pay thousands of pounds. Thea;r parents who can afford to pay thousands of pounds. They are Community Thousands of pounds. They are community schools, thousands of pounds. They are community schools, they thousands of pounds. They are community schools, they are l thousands of pounds. They are i community schools, they are for students who have special needs. Are you targeting them all in the same way . I you targeting them all in the same wa . ,. , , way . Ijust dont believe it can be ustified way . Ijust dont believe it can be justified that way . Ijust dont believe it can be justified that private way . Ijust dont believe it can be justified that private schools way . Ijust dont believe it can be| justified that private schools enjoy tax breaks. What i would also say is that many of your viewers will have had to make pretty tough choices in recent years during this cost of living Crisis Making Cutbacks and i would urge private schools to reflect on whether they can make savings because there was not a climate that they have to pass this on directly to parents in the way that has been described, we are talking about the vast majority of children in State Schools, my focus is on them and making sure that we have high and rising standards in State Schools where the vast majority of children receive an education. That is what parents would expect to see right now and it tells you about the very out of touch conservative government that they are not prepared to even consider making this kind of change. We have to leave it there, but thank you for your time, Bridget Philipsen, shadow education secretary. Youre watching bbc news, this is verified live, stay with us, more to come.
