Trump will be stumping as though he were already the candidate, in a swing state that could decide the 2024 election. With us to pull it apart tonight, the former federal prosecutor joe moreno and the uks former education secretary justine greening. Im surejoe will lend us his expertise on the judgment handed down last night stripping donald trump of his Business Licences in new york. And we will talk oil. Scientists say we should be thinking about fossil fuel embargos, but on both sides of the atlantic, our governments are drilling for more. Good evening. Donald trump should be at the Ronald Reagan library in california tonight. But he is not. He is in michigan, looking to upstage the republican candidates running against him with his own primetime speech to car workers, who are now 12 days into a national strike. Hes going to be speaking at a plant just outside detroit to an audience of around 500 former or Current Union members. Though interestingly, the leadership of the United Auto Workers union will not be with him. Michigan was crucial to trumps win in 2016, as it was tojoe biden in 2020. An important swing state which perhaps explain why today, joe biden was out with one of his first president ial attack ads. He says he stands with autoworkers, but as president , donald trump passed tax breaks for his rich friends, while auto makers shuttered their plants and michigan lost manufacturing jobs. Joe biden said hed stand up for workers and hes delivering, passing laws that are increasing wages and creating good paying jobs. Manufacturing is coming back to michigan becausejoe biden doesntjust talk, he delivers. Imjoe biden and i approve this message. Yesterday, President Biden became the first sitting president tojoin a picket line, where he backed up the workers demands for significant pay rises from the big three auto makers. Lets get into a bit of this. Joe marino, lets get into a bit of this. Joe marine. I lets get into a bit of this. Jre marino, i guess it comes wright down to whether you believe in an electric car or the combustion engine. I electric car or the combustion enaine. , ,. Engine. I drove my First Electric car last week and it was engine. I drove my First Electricl car last week and it was quite an experience, but, look, this uaw strike is really interesting, right . American croakers have any mixed history over the last 20 years and so these strikers who understandably want better wages, better pensions, better benefits, have to be careful they dont strike themselves out of existence, because Companies Like tesla, toyota are nonunion companies, operating here in the united states, so the unions have to be careful that if they get too generous, their progress could to expensive and they go Out Of Business. It expensive and they go Out Of Business expensive and they go Out Of Business. , g , business. It is interesting, justine we have business. It is interesting, justine we have not business. It is interesting, justine we have not had business. It is interesting, justine we have not had the business. It is interesting, justine we have not had the first business. It is interesting, justinel we have not had the first primary we have not had the first primary and yet trump is on the stump as if he was in a General Election. Yes. He was in a General Election. Yes, and the reason he was in a General Election. Yes, and the reason for he was in a General Election. Yes, and the reason for that he was in a General Election. Yes, and the reason for that is he was in a General Election. Yes, and the reason for that is it he was in a General Election. Yes, and the reason for that is it is and the reason for that is it is going and the reason for that is it is going to and the reason for that is it is going to be places like michigan that really decide what happens in the president ial election next year, and it the president ial election next year, and it is the president ial election next year, and it is this Reaganesque Battle for those and it is this Reaganesque Battle for those blue collar workers, and what for those blue collar workers, and what is for those blue collar workers, and what is interesting now is fewer than what is interesting now is fewer than12 what is interesting now is fewer than 12 of us workers are in the union than 12 of us workers are in the union and than 12 of us workers are in the union and so while joe biden of course union and so while joe biden of course is union and so while joe biden of course is supporting unions, he was out on course is supporting unions, he was out on the course is supporting unions, he was out on the strike lines today, actually out on the strike lines today, actually What Trump Is doing, he is talking actually What Trump Is doing, he is talking to actually What Trump Is doing, he is talking to all the other nonunionized workers this evening, and really nonunionized workers this evening, and really trying to get back into those and really trying to get back into those swing states. Last time, biden won many those swing states. Last time, biden won many of them in a way that trump had done won many of them in a way that trump had done before, talking about in michigan, had done before, talking about in michigan, pennsylvania, 0hio, wisconsih michigan, pennsylvania, 0hio, wisconsin. Those are going to be places wisconsin. Those are going to be places that they will decide what happens places that they will decide what happens in the next years Credential Election and that is why trump Credential Election and that is why trump is Credential Election and that is why trump is there tonight, already started trump is there tonight, already started to trump is there tonight, already started to fight this fight. Tte president of the united auto started to fight this fight. Tte president of the United Auto Workers union does not seem that enamoured by donald trump. Is that a problem for the former president , that some of the Working Class, rust belt voters just dont believe in of the Working Class, rust belt votersjust dont believe in him of the Working Class, rust belt voters just dont believe in him as they did in 2016 . Votersjust dont believe in him as they did in 2016 . They did in 2016 . Christian, it definitely is they did in 2016 . Christian, it definitely is a they did in 2016 . Christian, it definitely is a problem, they did in 2016 . Christian, it i definitely is a problem, because before donald trump won michigan in 2016, you have to go back to 1988, the last time a republican won that state, and so donald trump, he did make some inroads into the Working Class in 2016, when he nearly beat hillary clinton. He obviously lost that magic in 2020, losing tojoe biden, and so now it is going to be interesting, because i expect he is going to point heavily to the economy and inflation and to say, look, i may have lost the last time, but look at the economy underjoe biden, things are more expensive for you and if you give me another chance, the money in your pocket will go further. Will go further. That is bitings bi. Est will go further. That is bitings biggest problem, will go further. That is bitings biggest problem, of will go further. That is bitings biggest problem, of course, l will go further. That is bitings biggest problem, of course, justine. Biggest problem, of course, justine. Fighting that inflation reduction act, we have that inflation reduction act, we have seen that inflation reduction act, we have seen sales of Electric Vehicles Io have seen sales of electric vehicles 90 up have seen sales of electric vehicles 90 up by have seen sales of electric vehicles go up by 50 plus percentjust in a year go up by 50 plus percentjust in a year on go up by 50 plus percentjust in a year on the go up by 50 plus percentjust in a year on the back of that, but what trump year on the back of that, but What Trump Is year on the back of that, but What Trump Is saying to these workers is, these trump is saying to these workers is, these cars trump is saying to these workers is, these cars dont require as many of you to these cars dont require as many of you to build these cars dont require as many of you to build them, so im going to this candidate that supports these fossil this candidate that supports these Fossil Fuel Industry and that is what Fossil Fuel Industry and that is what witi Fossil Fuel Industry and that is what will support yourjobs, so this next election is really a fork in the road. Next election is really a fork in the road. I next election is really a fork in the road, ithink. Next election is really a fork in the road, i think. Interesting he has chosen the road, i think. Joe said he might have a problem with the workers, he might have a bigger problem in what happened last night. Pn the eve of this appearance in detroit, on the eve of this appearance in detroit, a judge in new york ruled that donald trump and his two adult sons had built their Business Empire on bank loans that were acquired fraudulently. The judge agreed with the new York Attorney general Letitia James that over the years, trump and his company had provided banks with financial statements, misrepresenting the value of his various properties by as much as 3. 6 billion. Trumps defence that none of this really mattered because the banks got their money back was from a fantasy world, said thejudge. The court has cancelled the Trump Organizations Business Certificates that allow them to operate in new york. Joe, we were all lumbering through it last night, try to understand what it means. Can hejust up and move to florida out of new york . That is most likely what is going to happen. The problem is most of trumps properties remain in new york and so operating them from another state is possible, but a lot of the licenses he might need and the Tax Arrangements and other policies that he has to follow could be difficult to co ordinate from another state, and so either you could see a very cumbersome future for the Trump Organization and more likely than not i can see a lot of those properties being liquidated and spun off, sold, soaked donald trump can raise the cassie needs. You are almost talking as if the entity would to be there caching needs. They were saying last night as this will be liquidated, much like a bankruptcy, right . Can he move the capital and interest from those Companies Directly to florida . Or is that not allowed under the law . Is or is that not allowed under the law . ,. ,. , ,. This law . Is going to be difficult. This is really big law . Is going to be difficult. This is really big stuff, law . Is going to be difficult. This is really big stuff, then, law . Is going to be difficult. This is really big stuff, then, for law . Is going to be difficult. This is really big stuff, then, for the l is really big stuff, then, for the Trump Organization. filth. Is really big stuff, then, for the Trump Organization. Is really big stuff, then, for the Trump Organization. Oh, it is big. The attorney Trump Organization. Oh, it is big. The Attorney General Trump Organization. Oh, it is big. The Attorney General of Trump Organization. Oh, it is big. The Attorney General of new Trump Organization. Oh, it is big. J the Attorney General of New York State is asking for a quarter of 1 billion, basically saying that even there is no victim here, because these loans were paid back, which donald trump is pointing out, the argument is that he got these loans and insurance policies under favourable terms, so basically pay less in interest that he should have because he exaggerated the value of his properties and got a better deal than otherwise would have happened, and so itll be interesting to see, and so itll be interesting to see, an interesting theory interesting to see how it plays out. And while the triable go quickly, starting on monday, i could see this held up on appealfor a few years, monday, i could see this held up on appeal for a few years, so monday, i could see this held up on appealfor a few years, so i dont thing you will see many changes in the Trump Organization for for little while. The Trump Organization for for little while. That is interesting, because at little while. That is interesting, because at the little while. That is interesting, because at the outset, little while. That is interesting, because at the outset, the little while. That is interesting, i because at the outset, the trump team had asked for a Summary Judgment on this, thinking the judge would toss it out, but in fact he went the other way and agreed with Letitia James, the Attorney General. When they presented evidence that had been litigated, he said, you cannotjust represent had been litigated, he said, you cannot just represent this, had been litigated, he said, you cannotjust represent this, any find of the lawyers. I went with the bases of that is for some of the other trials trump is fighting. That was interesting, other trials trump is fighting. that was interesting, because what the lawyers did was they initially tried to claim that he charges, the civil charges were scale, that these actions happened too far back in time and therefore the Attorney General had waited too long to bring the case. One on appeal, it was rejected on appeal, and then froms lawyers try to argument again, and in Mind Spirits Trial Lawyers dont like that, they dont like their in my experience. Attorneys being personally find, dig deal. Not a good start to a child that starts next week. Good start to a child that starts next week good start to a child that starts next week. If youre in one cam, you are not going the other camp. They are not going the other camp. They are going to be talking about it tonight, so lets focus on the debate. Seven candidates seeking the republican nomination will be on stage at the reagan president ial library in california. It is the second of three televised debates. The first time around, it was nikki haley, the former South Carolina governor and un ambassador, who had the break out moment. And in recent days, she has been more willing to take on the former president. Here she is in new hampshire. He was the right president at the right time. He broke things that needed to be broken, he. Listened and brought in a group of people who felt unheard, like where i grew up, rural South Carolina. He was strong on Foreign Policy and getting americas respect in the world. He was. Thin skinned and easily distracted. He didnt do anything on fiscal policy. And really spent a lot of money and we are all paying the price for it. He did do a betterjob than biden on the border really trying to corral that in and stop that. He used to be good on Foreign Policy, and now he has started to walk it back and get weak in the knees when it comes to ukraine. A terrible thing happened onjanuary 6, and he called it a beautiful day. And in the eyes of america, it was a terrible day. If you come for the king, expected nickname. He has dubbed her nikki bird brain haley. Her Favourability Rating is rising quickly, albeit it from a very low base, and in a recent nbc poll, in a hypothetical head to head withjoe biden, she leads him by five points. Interesting in this chart from the Washington Post that her negatives are just 19 . She doesnt alienate republicans in the same way as some of the others. The bbc s Caitriona Perry is in simi valley in california, in front of Ronald Reagan president ial library. And i think she is going to get some tonight, she is the one that is rising. Tonight, she is the one that is risint. ,. ,. , rising. She is indeed, and that is one of the rising. She is indeed, and that is one of the changes rising. She is indeed, and that is one of the changes to one of the changes to tonights debate from what we saw a month ago in milwaukee, that nikki haley will move more into the centre of the stage because she is doing better in the polls than she was. Ron desantis in the middle, nikki haley on one said and vivek on The Other Side ron desantis, as the three, not front runners, of course, donald trump is the front runner, but a lot of focus there, nikki haley started to push ahead their off the others. The other change tonight is that there wont be any closing statements from the candidates, there are no Opening Statements either, and all the answers will be kept to just one minutes of that with 30 seconds allowed for rebuttals, so fox news and foxbusiness, writing this debate, very anxious to keep the pace up, to keep it lively, to keep viewers interested, donald trump seeking to still the thunder of this event by addressing those Nonunion Auto Workers in detroit in our earlier. It auto workers in detroit in our earlier. , , earlier. It never works heres the thin that earlier. It never works heres the thing that is earlier. It never works heres the thing that is interesting, earlier. It never works heres the thing that is interesting, about. Earlier. It never works heres the l thing that is interesting, about how the public are viewing this, for the first time around, the first debate, the ads benders paid half 1 million for single 32nd spot, tonight, that same 32nd spot, 200,000 because no one is tuning in. They look at the polls and he is miles clear. If you are nikki haley and ron desantis and you were going to your campaign and you were going to your campaign and saying, im up two, i am now nine points, that does not really fly, does it, that does not bring the money in . Fly, does it, that does not bring the money in . Fly, does it, that does not bring the mone in . ,. , i. The money in . Now, and when you look at it on paper. The money in . Now, and when you look at it on paper, donald the money in . Now, and when you look at it on paper, donald trump the money in . Now, and when you look at it on paper, donald trump in at it on paper, donald trump in around the 405, ron desantis, between 15 and 17 depend on the pole and nikki haley up to 7 , in ordinary times, people would be dropping out, taking their donors thinking their donors. Nothing is natural in us politics, the playbook was thrown out long ago as soon donald trump descended tho5e golden escalators in trump tower in 2016. Anything can happen tonight, and again, a sign of the changing media times, what people are going to be looking for is the candidates to get those viral moments, some thing that tho5e viral moments, some thing that will ran late into a clip, shared on various media platforms, replayed tomorrow morning on the Breakfast News Channels here. That is what they are hoping for. They are not expecting so many people to sit there and watch this debate are two hours. But nevertheless the candidates will of course be giving it their best shot. Ukraine expected to feature quite highly, in the debate, that autoworkers strike and the looming shutdown at the capital. Yes, all of them wanting to be Ronald Reagan. The viral moment will be that bit where they are asked to put their hands up and a half go up and half go down, dont they . Do you remember that from the first one . The frustration for the republican candidates, joe, is they dont get to debate him, they cannot take him on on policy. There was a moment on beat the press where he was asked about abortion, and he did not give about abortion, and he did not give a particularly convincing answer on whether he supported a federal ban or not. Those sort of things can be picked over in the televised debate, but he is hundreds of miles away, and he is home and dry on this unless they can find something that will make voters rethink. Will make voters rethink. Christian, i think donald will make voters rethink. Christian, i think donald trump will make voters rethink. Christian, i think donald trump feels will make voters rethink. Christian, i think donald trump feels that will make voters rethink. Christian, i think donald trump feels that the j i think donald trump feels that the debate i think donald trump feels that the debate is i think donald trump feels that the debate is beneath him, that he is so far ahead debate is beneath him, that he is so far ahead in debate is beneath him, that he is so far ahead in this race that it can only far ahead in this race that it can only hurt far ahead in this race that it can only hurt him and so therefore he is almost only hurt him and so therefore he is almost showing his dominance by saying. Almost showing his dominance by saying. Im almost showing his dominance by saying, im not even going to bother, saying, im not even going to bother, and at this point, the republicans they have some formidable candidates among them. Tim scott. Formidable candidates among them. Tim scott, nikki haley, ron desantis, maybe chris christie, they could desantis, maybe chris christie, they could already good race against joe biden, could already good race against joe biden, who is honourable, but the only way biden, who is honourable, but the only way theyre going to defeat donald only way theyre going to defeat donald trump is as many of them get out of donald trump is as many of them get out of the donald trump is as many of them get out of the race and unify behind a single out of the race and unify behind a single candidate, so if it is ron desantis. Single candidate, so if it is ron desantis, nikki haley, who my mother, desantis, nikki haley, who my mother, if desantis, nikki haley, who my mother, if it is a one on one race against mother, if it is a one on one race against trump, they have a chance. If against trump, they have a chance. If they against trump, they have a chance. If they remain splintered, donald trump if they remain splintered, donald trump remained the dominant candidate and will undoubtedly be the candidate next year on the republican side for president stop at a quick republican side for president stop at a quick one, justine for moderate at a quick one, justine for moderate republicans for one policy, this is moderate republicans for one policy, this is where you test policy, in a form like this. It is hugely frustrating because all you hear from donald trump at the moment is the biting crime family, retribution, vengeful disc, taking on the media, trying the chair of thejoint chiefs for on the media, trying the chair of the joint chiefs for treason biden crime family. The companies behind the rosebank project, which is located about 130km west of the shetland islands, say it will create some 2,000 jobs and boost the british economy by around £8 billion. But it is highly contentious. Last month, a Cross Party Group of 50 mp5 and peers wrote to the energy secretary, arguing it would be deeply irresponsible to sign off this scheme when the government has been warned repeatedly by scientists that we should be driving down our carbon emissions. The government argues wed be buying this oil anyway from other countries, so this improves the uks energy security. But critics say most of this oil will be exported and sold on the International Market so British Consumers will not be benefiting from cheaper bills. The Scottish First minister says it is a terrible idea. Well, this is the wrong decision to have been made. And i have expressed my concerns about rosebank going ahead for some time now. But i think most reasonable people are in our position. We dont think the tap should be turned off tomorrow. There shouldnt be a cliff edge. But neither is the north easts or scotlands future an Unlimited Oil and gas extraction. That is why we have invested £500 million in a just transition, to take workers of the north east from a Fossil Fuel Industry, transitioning to a Renewables Net zero future. And that is one that i am committed to. And this latest development, i am afraid, is just another demonstration we know of the uk government rolling back on its own climate ambitions. Justine greening, i am not sure how you feel about this, not sure how you feel about this, not sure how you are position to comment on the opposition. Weve had lots of sunshine in the far north of scotland, and in the south and east where its been quite warm. But this defined swirl of Cloud Denotes storm agnes a well developed storm, the first of the season, which is still spreading its influence of very windy weather, and wet weather further north and east. Weve had over 20 millimetres of rain, for example, in parts of Northern Ireland, and weve had gusts of wind, 50 60mph, close to 70 in some exposed parts. As i say, weve still got that storm to bring stronger winds further north, as well, so still potential for some Hazardous Travel conditions as we go through the rest of the evening and overnight. The detail about the weather warnings, thats on the website. So, still some heavy rains around as we go through the evening, particularly for scotland. Squally showers following back through england, wales, and Northern Ireland. Ahead of it, yes, just one or two showers to come. But those strong winds for many areas, and of course, with those strong winds, it will hold the temperatures up through the night. But you can see the rain slowly clearing away and, by morning, theres a lot more dry weather around, the wind starting to ease a little but look at that, 12 14 celsius, those are almost the same as the daytime highs at this time of year. But a brighter, drier start for some tomorrow morning, the winds having moderated a little bit. Therell be quite a bit of cloud around, but that should break up to reveal some dry and bright weather. Until later, weve got more rain coming in from the west and from the southwest, as well. But ahead of that, 17 20 is quite possible once again not quite as high as those temperatures we saw in the south and east today. And then, through the evening and overnight, weve got The Rain Pushing in from the south, the rain coming across from the west, as well. So, some rain for many overnight thursday into friday, but then, that should slowly clear out the way. So slightly cooler as we head towards friday morning, particularly in the north. But otherwise, further north, weve got sunny spells and scattered showers, and blustery winds on friday. The rainy or the Showery Rain In The South should clear away, and then actually it looks like a good deal of dry and reasonably bright weather on friday, which will again lift our temperatures a little bit above the average for late september. As for the weekend, we do have more rain coming in later saturday to start sunday its a very changeable picture, but as i say, for the details on the warnings, please head to the website. Hello, im christian fraser. Youre watching the context on bbc news. Google is 25. The Search Engine founded in 1998 by two students at Stamford University has grown into a Tech Monolith now worth more than 1. 6 trillion. Its fairly obvious its changed our lives, but what will the next 25 years look like . And will google be a major part of it
