Concerned parents, children and teachers are and i want to start by assuring them that the government is doing everything it can to fix this quickly and minimise the disruption to childrens education. We make no apology for acting decisively in the face of new information and let me provide the house with an update on where we are. Of the 22,000 schools in england, the vast, vast majority wont be affected. In fact, in two thirds of inspections of suspected schools, raac is not actually present. And to tackle the 1 of schools that have been affected so far, the 1 , we are assigning each of those schools a dedicated caseworker and providing extra funding to fix the problem. In the majority of cases, children will attend school as normal and the mitigations take typically just days or weeks to complete. We will do everything we can to help parents, support teachers, and get children back to Normal School life as quickly as possible. Lets listen to what the Leader Of The Labour Party had to say. Well, mr speaker, they want more, so let me continue. Ferryhill school, in county durham, was on labours Building List in 2010. They scrapped it and now children there are in a crumbling school. The truth is, this crisis is the inevitable result of 13 years of cutting corners, botched jobs, sticking plaster politics. Its the sort of thing you expect from cowboy builders, saying that everyone else is wrong, everyone else is to blame, protesting that theyve done an effing good job, even if the ceiling falls in. The difference is that in this case, the cowboys are running the country. Isnt he ashamed that, after 13 years of tory government, children are cowering under steel supports stopping their Classroom Roof falling in . 0ur Political Correspondent rob watson is in westminster. I think the broader political problem that rishi sunak faces is that it seems an awful lot of voters are tuned out from whatever this government is saying, they have taken the view fairly or unfairly that after 13 years of conservative government, everything is a bit rubbish and they are not listening to the detail. In it, saras father and his partner, who left the uk for pakistan the day before her body was found, say they are in hiding because they fear Pakistani Police will torture and kill them. This report from our pakistan correspondent caroline davies. We are coming forward and presenting ourselves. Four weeks to the day after they left the uk, this is the first time weve heard from urfan sharif and beinash batool. Theyre wanted for questioning about the death of sara sharif, urfans ten year old daughter. She was found dead the day after they left for pakistan. Firstly, i would like to talk about sara. Saras death was an incident. In the 2 36 video, this is the only mention of sara. 0urfamily in pakistan are severely affected by all that is going on. They are harassing my extended family. They have also illegally raided many more of my Family Members homes. Most is about the harassment the couple say their family are facing as the Police Search for them. Police have previously admitted detaining some Family Members for questioning and conducting raids. My main concern is that the Pakistani Police will torture or kill us, that is why we have gone into hiding. 0n the latest allegation of torture, the police have been adamant, saying this is totally baseless. We dont know where this was filmed or the conditions it was filmed under but some details help us to date it. The next Court Hearing is on 19th September 2023. There, thats important because that decision was only made yesterday in court in rawalpindi, our team was there. That means this video must have be made in the course of the last day. Lets bring you live pictures from the Hackney Empire in london. That is because very shortly the Rolling Stones will unveil their first new material in 18 years, an event due to get under way in the next 20 minutes. Earlier, we sell members of the band, Led By Mickjagger, arriving at the Hackney Empire. This is going to be the Band Truss First Album since the death of their drummer Charlie Watts two years ago. It is going to be a Press Conference we will be seen in the empire, we are not should the band are going to perform anything. Lots of journalists inside waiting for that announcement. It is going to be hosted by the us talk show host jimmy fallon. It will be streamed live on youtube and you can watch it here on bbc news. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. A former adviser to Birmingham City council has said the hosting of the Commonwealth Games was a mistake, given its legacy of financial problems. Max caller said last summers event had been a challenge too far for the council. Urgent talks are taking place following tuesdays announcement that the Labour Run Council was effectively bankrupt. People with disabilities could be given more support to work from home, under plans announced by the government. Work and pensions secretary mel stride has outlined several benefit reforms to help people find work and reduce government spending. Those are some of the other stories we have been looking at from around the uk. There is plenty more on the bbc website. Youre live with bbc news. The us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken has arrived in ukraine for an unannounced visit. It is being seen as a show of support, four months into ukraines Counter Offensive against russian forces. Mr blinken has already met his ukrainian counterpart dmytro kuleba. During the two day visit, mr blinken is expected to pledge a new package of us assistance worth more than one billion dollars. Speaking in his opening news conference, Antony Blinken outlined the aim of his visit. Paul adams reports. With americas Secretary Of State just hours away, a fresh wave of attacks at dawn. Kyiv s well drilled air defences called into action once more. Outside the city a supermarket damaged by falling debris, wrecked early in the war, in the process of being repaired now wrecked again. And a familiar welcome, too. Mr blinken bringing a fresh pledge, more than 1 billion in security and other assistance. Every time i am here i am struck by the extraordinary bravery and resilience of the ukrainian people, the Ukrainian Forces, ukraines leadership. And i am here first and foremost to demonstrate our ongoing and determined support for ukraine as it deals with this aggression. This is mr blinkens first visit since ukraine launched its Counter Offensive injune. After weeks of slow progress, ukraine says the pace is picking up. The cost in men and equipment is high. President zelensky says more supplies are on the way and that ukraine will step up its own production. Translation there will be new supplies. | it is very important that there will be new production of our weapons and we have outlined several priority items with the warriors. This is what needs to be done. We will do it. At kyiv s wall of remembrance, yet another gesture of solidarity denmarks Prime Minister paying her respects. Her country among three planning to send f 16 jets by the beginning of next year. Pauladams, bbc news, kyiv. Some breaking news. Ukraines president , volodymyr zelensky, says a russian attack has killed sixteen people in the town of kostiantynivka, in the Eastern Region of donetsk. He said many others were wounded in the strike on a market, adding that the casualty figures could rise. Mr zelensky described the attack as utter inhumanity. Meanwhile, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Region said a Russian Rocket attack in the local capital injured two people and destroyed an object of civilan infrastructure, without specifying what that was. In a separate development, ukraines parliament has confirmed the appointment of Rustem Umerov as the countrys defence minister. Earlier, i spoke to drjenny mathers, a senior lecturer in International Relations at Aberystwyth University in wales. I asked her how significant is the us support for ukraine. Absolutely vital because although ukrainians have had support from around the world, i think the us has by far provided the most extensive support in terms of the value of money, in terms of the range of weapons and equipment and so on and as well as training. So i think without us support, ukrainians would find it much more difficult to make the sort of progress that theyve made in the Counter Offensive, but also to be able to plan to sustain this pushback against the russian invasion. Im just going to bring in some copy that weve had in from our defense correspondent, jonathan bale, which relates to the Counter Offensive. And he says Senior Western officials insist that ukraine is making steady and methodical progress in the offensive, but admit that ukraine was making slower progress than they had originally anticipated. What do you make of that . I think thats a pretty good summation of where we are, i think. A year ago we had the sort of the breakthrough in kharkiv, where Ukrainian Forces really surprised the world by how quickly they were able to push through the russian lines. I think the situation that theyre in right now is very, very different. But the fact of that rapid progress a year ago really shaped the way that people expected the Counter Offensive to go. And of course, first, it took a very long time for it to be launched. It wasnt launched untiljune after a lot of training throughout the winter, in the spring. And then it didnt create that sense of rapid gains that were expected. And so although theyre showing those kinds of gains now, not rapid but steady, i think that in between that time, theres been the opportunity for people to raise questions, increase their doubts, and also for a bit of briefing against the ukrainians coming out in some of the American Press in particular. So i think its a really crucial moment for blinken to be there because hes there as a calming presence and a reassuring presence that us support is going to continue, at least as long as the Biden Administration continues to exist. And just on this statement as well, it says that Senior Western officials said theyd war gamed the offensive in advance and had actually multiplied by several times the maximum amount of ammunition they thought ukraine would need. So actually its saying Officials Say their focus now is on continuing the supply of ammunition and equipment support. So ukraine needs more military help. Can the us and other western countries come forward and actually give them exactly what they need . Well, this is one of the Big Questions because, of course, the military Industrial Complex in the west has not been geared up to provide this sort of quantity and volume of ammunition and weaponry. And the war in ukraine has gone through ammunition and weaponry at an amazing pace. And already, you know, the ukrainians are needing more and more. And this is one of the reasons why the americans decided to give them cluster munitions as a way of kind of overcoming that gap. So the big question now in the coming weeks and months is to what extent will american and european Weapons Industries be able to gear themselves up to provide this additional material which is so desperately needed . And let me just ask you quickly about Something Else that we just mentioned, and thats that the russian mercenary group, wagner, is going to be prescribed as a terrorist organization here in the uk. Do you think that should have happened sooner . Well, its ironic that now finally its being described as a terrorist organization and wars are being open to create more and more, i dont know, sanctions against it and more measures against it at the very moment when theres Big Questions about whether wagner group is going to continue in its present form or not. I think a broader question is will that attitude towards wagner group also extend towards other Russian Private Military Companies . And there are others who operate in very similar ways across the world and who do the russian states bidding. So i think thats the question to keep an eye on in the coming months. Well have more on the developments coming out of ukraine when we get them. The Rolling Stones will unveil their first new material in 18 years at an event in east london this afternoon. News of the album emerged last month when a mysterious newspaper advert apparently for a glass Repair Business but containing several references to Rolling Stones songs appeared in the hackney gazette. In 2021 when Charlie Watts fell ill, they brought him in to replace him. And they had a conversation with Charlie Watts towards the end, it looks like you are no longer going to be able to perform with us, are we going to be able to continue . And Charlie Watts said, to quote Keith Richards directly, regarding stevejordan, he can take my seat any time.
