of the president. translation: achieving democracy will no doubt be difficult. freedom is one of the greatest values in europe. at without a doubt, we will no longer tolerate what would have been business —— decades of business as usual for those who plundered ukraine and put themselves above our laws and i thank the lord determine offices who have brought cases who have stalled the decade to adjust conclusion. the law must work. it is so, it must be so. glory to ukraine.— glory to ukraine. president zelensky — glory to ukraine. president zelensky there. _ peter zalmayev is director of the eurasia democracy initiative — an international non—profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of democracy and human rights. thank you forjoining us, peter. what do you make of this event, as it were, of kind of going after this individual, a man that clearly has some intriguing business dealings? i actually was speaking him, i have my own show on ukrainian tv, and yesterday i was interviewing the former head of the security service of ukraine who said that yes, this sounds like a bold step in the right direction but first of all, this comes from the prosecutors office, the economic security and security service of ukraine to the relevant bodies. it and security service of ukraine to the relevant bodies.- to the relevant bodies. it will robabl to the relevant bodies. it will probably follow _ to the relevant bodies. it will probably follow the _ to the relevant bodies. it will probably follow the fate - to the relevant bodies. it will probably follow the fate of i to the relevant bodies. it will| probably follow the fate of all of these because of other big televised cases and exposes that have come to the providence of and then fizzled out and apparently are mired in courts, stuck in level bureaucracy so —— legal. so obviously, zelensky has said there will be no more decades long as this is suitable for those who plundered ukraine, etc, and we understand zelensky is at pains to reassure western allies who have supported ukraine that there will be no more business as usual but we will have to see if there is enough political will to see these cases through. already a few months ago, in february, there was a similar search of kolomoisky*s property etc. it went nowhere. we will have to see. again, kolomoisky is a very important person. he is wanted in the united states and was a person who brought the winski to power in 2019. —— who brought zelensky. he worked for kolomoisky*s tv channel and played the president in a long running tv in the us and there is more than enough evidence to bring these charges when kolomoisky was in charge of inaudible there is a preponderance of evidence that needs to be investigated but also i think it comes amid a series of big culture scandals involving heads of military draft commissions. they have been accepting bribes to let young ukrainians off the hook and not be drafted into the military. zelensky desire to fire them en masse. still, there is consternation and some concern in western countries about this corruption and we see there is a sizeable portion of us republicans are now agitating for some kind of a curtailment of aid to ukraine so this is again a step in the right direction, zelensky is trying to reassure western allies that corruption will not be tolerated. in ukrainians are used to these cases exploding and being paraded on tv and then fizzling out and going nowhere so i would say there is a very, very cautious optimism but this time will not be the same.— use of live fire by officers during clashes in tel aviv between rival groups of eritrean asylum seekers, which left nearly 150 people injured. the violence broke out as eriteans protesting against their government, clashed with supporters of the regime. both groups then fought police attempting to impose order. some suffered gunshot wounds and are in serious condition. israeli media report it was the first use of live fire on protesters inside israel since the second intifada in 2002. investigators are now gathering evidence from the scene to determine whether officers behaved according to the law. 0ur middle east correspondent yolande knell is following developments from jerusalem. well, this was an event that was organised by the eritrean embassy — a kind of festival event. it hired a hall not far away from the embassy, to the centre, south of tel aviv. and earlier in the week, as you were saying, there are activists within the eritrean community — they mostly reside in the south of tel aviv — who had warned against hosting this. they say that the authorities didn't heed their warnings. certainly, the israeli authorities — the police, the hospitals as well — seem to have been really caught by surprise with what happened here. there were attempts to break through police barricades. the israeli police then ended up using all of these different riot control methods, as they describe them, to try to push people back but you could see as well from some of the videos that have been shared on social media that there were actually also street fights going on — and notjust with the police, but also involving asylum seekers who are against the eritrean regime and those who are in favour of it, and that has been something that we've seen in the past — not on this scale. in the south of tel aviv, there has been previous violence between the two sides. live now to ethiopian journalist zecharias zelalem, who joins us from washington. he covers the horn of africa region. thank you forjoining us. some people may be surprised to hear there is a eritrean community in israel so can you tell us more about that community in israel and also the relations they have with people in the country, in tel aviv? the eritrean community in israel is a considerably sizeable one.— israel is a considerably sizeable one. it's largely composed _ sizeable one. it's largely composed of _ sizeable one. it's largely composed of asylum - sizeable one. it's largely - composed of asylum seekers, including some of the hundreds of thousands of people over the past decade or so who have fled the endless mandatory military conscription in eritrea and many of them migrated to israel via the very dangerous egyptian sinai corridor, so there are many victims of human traffickers, those who have experienced some horrific and traumatic experiences en route to israel. many of these members of the community hold the eritrean government is responsible for their suffering and this is likely one of the reasons why tensions boiled over so quickly.— over so quickly. talk about tensions. _ over so quickly. talk about tensions, clearly _ over so quickly. talk about tensions, clearly the - over so quickly. talk about i tensions, clearly the tensions that we saw in that clash in tel aviv, they were really quite violent clashes. why do you think that happened? what triggered this specific event? clearly, tensions have been simmering between the two communities for a while. the eritrean communities for a while. tue: eritrean government communities for a while. tte: eritrean government really values these pro—government festivals or celebrations that it has been holding for a decade or so across communities in the middle east, europe and north america —— holding for decades. it values them because the country is economically stagnant and there is not much in terms of foreign currency or foreign investment coming into the country. but for the longest time now, members of these immunity, macro es —— members of these communities, the eritrean communities, have been accused of spying on their communities and checking to see who is paying the 2% mandatory income tax, keeping tax on those who are towing to the ruling parties narratives. —— toeing. this is what has led to frustration boiling over because for most eritreans, everything is linked to the fact that the country is still led by a totalitarian dictatorship over the past 30 years who has remained in power and promises of free press, democracy, elections are get to materialise, in addition to the mandatory military conscription that remains in place since the 90s so for eritreans, these festivals are considered fundraisers of a dictatorship, fundraisers of a dictatorship, fundraisers of a government that oppresses them. hence, the breakout of anti—government protest at these events, not just in israel but over the past year there's been something like a dozen cancellation of similar festivals across northern europe before north america, europe before north america, europe and the middle east although the intensity and ferocity of what we saw in tel aviv may have been unprecedented. aviv may have been unrecedented. * , , unprecedented. and yes, it seems like _ unprecedented. and yes, it seems like they _ unprecedented. and yes, it seems like they came i unprecedented. and yes, it seems like they came out | unprecedented. and yes, it | seems like they came out in quite a large scale and clearly, as you've explained there, this has been simmering for a while. in terms of, like, support for the government of eritrea, there is some sort of strength there, as well, isn't there? in terms of people who quite like the president and the regime. quite like the president and the regime-_ the regime. definitely. for starters. — the regime. definitely. for starters, the _ the regime. definitely. for starters, the current i the regime. definitely. for- starters, the current president was also the rebel commander who led the successful eritrean revolt against forces and the struggle that culminated in eritrea gaining its independence in 1991 and the mobilisation of the entire diaspora to assist the rebel movement in the 60s, 70s and 80s but the same infrastructure and planning has been used for decades to maintain the government so of course there are those who were still nostalgic or still have positive sentiments towards the government and there are those who will still continue to lionised president isaias afwerki, calling him a hero of independence and so on and so forth. but obviously, with the growing frustration and, of course, the considerable amount of eritreans who died in the recent war in ethiopian, which eritrean troops were involved in, opposition to his rule continues to grow and it might be, at least the intensity of the opposition that eritrea is facing at least abroad, is nothing like anything that eritreans have seen over the course of the past 30 years. zecharias, thank you for joining us and providing that impact and analysis. zecharias zelalem. to the uk now, and headteachers in england are in a race antarctica in an operation to rescue a researcher who's fallen ill there. an air rescue from the remote casey outpost was ruled out because of harsh conditions. from the newsroom, nicky schiller explained the complexity of the rescue operation. this is the icebreaker being sent on a rescue mission to rescue the researcher who has what is being called a debilitating medical condition. it's taken weeks to get this vessel ready, including equipping it with helicopters. to give you a sense of the scale of the operation, look at this map. it's leaving from hobart in tasmania, and is on a journey all the way to the casey research station in antarctica, which is of course one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. indeed, the journey is 3,443 kilometres from hobart, all the way down to casey station. now, the icebreaker has a top speed of around 30 kilometres an hour, so it's going to take days to get there. an air rescue from the nearby wilkins runway was ruled out. the reason for that is that the runway is made of ice and it is unstable during the winter. indeed, reports suggest it would have taken weeks to get it up to a standard that could be used, so it was much quicker to actually send the icebreaker. now, the research station itself has around 20 staff during the winter months, but medicalfacilities are limited there. now, we don't know what the condition of the researcher is, but the australian antarctic program told the bbc that "the wellbeing of our people is our highest priority." now, australia says that all researchers sent to the base undergo extensive medical examinations before they depart, and they say that all the other personnel on the base are safe and accounted for. live now to 0liver darke who's director of operations at the
