catherine byaruhanga joins us now. we talk about this bulging being a hijacked building, can you explain what that means and how common these types of buildings are in south africa? , . , types of africa? yes, as you say, this is turning out to be one of the . africa? yes, as you say, this is i turning out to be one of the most deadly fires not only in south africa's history but also in the last few years around the world. what has made it worse is the type of accommodation people were living in here. this five—storey block is called a hijacked building in south africa, that's because these are often abandoned derelict buildings, that sometimes gangs to cover, so hijacked, then the rent them out to people who are desperate for any type of accommodation. these are often undocumented workers are homeless people in south africa. once made this place so deadly for people is the fact it is not regulated. there are reports now, the authorities say they managed to find a pile of bodies by a locked gate, so that people could not get out. often there is poor access or connection to water and electricity facilities, making this place even more dangerous for people. so the searchers are still going on but it is made difficult by the fact that this place is packed, overcrowded and there are makeshift structures in this apartment. {flare and there are makeshift structures in this apartment.— in this apartment. give us an idea of what life _ in this apartment. give us an idea of what life is _ in this apartment. give us an idea of what life is like _ in this apartment. give us an idea of what life is like for _ in this apartment. give us an idea of what life is like for migrants i of what life is like for migrants and those who come to south africa from other parts of the continent. yes, the reports we are getting is that most of the people who are believed to have died in this fire were african migrants. life for them is incredibly difficult. a lot of people come to south africa hoping for a better life, it is africa's most developed economy. but when they get there, they find out they earn very little, it is hard for them to get proper documentation, so work permits or refugee status in south africa. what has happened following this fire is that we've seen a backlash on social media, people blaming the victims of this fire for the incident. part of that is because of really xenophobia against other africans in south africa. we have seen attacks against migrants in the past, even those who have proper documentation. they sometimes face a tax on discrimination. so that is really the life they face on the life they face and they often find themselves in these desperate situations leading to this fire was to give me an idea of how south africa is coping with all this. i heard you talking earlier about it and you mentioned it is the most developed country in the african continent. why is this being allowed to happen inshallah why, this building was in the business district. i inshallah why, this building was in the business district.— the business district. i think reall as the business district. i think really as far _ the business district. i think really as far as _ the business district. i think really as far as african - the business district. i think - really as far as african migrants been caught up in this fire, their relatives stood outside the building going to get information about their loved ones. this relief is to the struggles that south africa is going through at the moment. you have challenges around services, electricity and water, there is a high unemployment rate in the country, making it hard for people to make a living. there are also questions about the city authority, first of all whether the fire services were able to get there in time, if they have the resources to be able to put out the fire, also the city authorities believed to have actually owned this building on the acquisition is that they were not able to look after it. so as much as this has been a crisis affecting african migrants, it shows some of the challenges that south africa is grappling with at the moment. . ., ~ in florida are struggling with the aftermath of hurricane idalia. the weather system weakened to a tropical storm as it moved north—east, across georgia and south carolina. but it's still bringing dangerous winds and heavy rains. in florida, at least two people have died due to driving accidents in wet conditions, and hundreds of thousands are without power. florida's governor ron desantis says there has been significant damage throughout the big bend region of his state — but he says that people who need help are getting it, and the signs are positive. officials say dozens of people had to be carried to safety in a small motorboat in a coastal town where knee—high waters covered streets. work is being carried out to restore power to hundreds of thousands of people. our correspondent helena humphrey sent this report from cedar key. idalia has already moved on from florida but in herwake, a path of destruction. in the rural community of cedar key, hurricane winds ripped down walls with ease, some homes all but hollowed out, leaving the storm surge to pour in, washing away the everyday trappings of life. i don't think anybody can deny the impact of the climate crisis any more. just look around. historic floods. i mean, historic floods. more intense droughts, extreme heat. significant wildfires have caused significant damage like we've never seen before. federal authorities have promised whatever it takes to get the state back up and running. but in florida and in georgia, nearly half a million people were without power. here, in cedar key, one of the hardest hit areas, people have escaped with their lives, but not their livelihoods. hotels have been destroyed, shops have been submerged. and some residents i've been speaking to have been telling me that they've only just recovered from other hurricanes in florida. and now this. and even as this storm weakens moving north, the warning from authorities is that the danger isn't over. this indicates where the highest risk of flooding is. all of this tropical moisture is wrapping around, then there is a front right here, it has been piled up in this narrow red place, so jacksonville, wilmington, myrtle beach and columbia south carolina are all in that square with a very heavy rain. as residents of the big bend in florida recoverfrom the strongest storm in over a century, they're also having to get to grips with a new reality — that disasters like this one are unlikely to be a once—in—a—lifetime event. helena humphrey, bbc news, florida. the british government has joined a number of other western nations in condeming wednesday's coup in gabon. the country's military has named one of its generals as the new transitional leader. the country's long—time president, ali bongo, has been put under house arrest and a curfew is in place. the military takeover in gabon is the eighth in west and central africa since 2020, and the second — after niger — this year. our correspondent mayeni jones in lagos gave us her analysis of events in gabon a little earlier. his name is brice oligui nguema, and he heads the republican guard in gabon. that's the unit of the military that was in charge of ensuring the protection of president bongo just before they deposed him. so he was one of the most powerful men in the gabonese army. he was in a position of privilege. he was in charge of security. he beefed up the republican guard when he was appointed not too long ago. increased the number of personnel that was there. made sure that they were better trained. and many people would have seen him as an intrinsic part of the bongo kind of power apparatus. but it seems that he was at the forefront of the army generals that decided to overtake the country after this weekend's elections, which were disputed by the opposition, which the army has now also said they think were fraudulent. a lot of international observers weren't allowed then. journalists weren't allowed in. so it's really hard to find out how clear they were. but this is a family that has been in power for over 50 years. this coup has been condemned by france, by the united states and by the african union. they've all asked for a return to a democratically elected government. i think the the situation in gabon is different. tunisia, i think thejunta here clearly has a lot of support within the gabonese population, many of whom were frustrated by the bongo's long rule. this family has been in power, as i said, for more than 50 years, and for a lot of people i think they would rather see the military takeover than the continuation of that. the goalkeeper in spain's world cup winning women's football team has spoken of her disappointment that a contentious kiss has overshadowed their victory. catalina coll said attempting to become the oldest person to ever complete the great north run. he's no stranger to a challenge. when he turned 100, he walked a hundred miles in ten days, and after his ioist birthday, he cycled 1000 miles on his tricycle. but given his age, the great north run organisers requested that he do the walk accompanied by two carers. just fancy doing the great north run, really help us. buyer for its business, it was cash going into administration. 12,500 jobs at risk, 400 stores across the country. pwc has been looking for a buyer for wilko, there were signs may be something was going to happen, there would be a buyer, i would buy the company but we've heard in the last couple of minutes or so from the gmb union that they only bid to buy the entirety of the collapsed retailer wilko has fallen through and that staff redundancies are due to start next week. pwc also says that it is now clear that no viable fare structure was put forward, that includes the wilko group in its entirety, which probably means whoever was trying to buy the company couldn't afford to buy the whole thing. it also says that a decision has had to be taken to make 269 support centre team member roles redundant at wilko. just to bring you up—to—date with that, this is a really big uk retailer, it has 400 stores around the uk, they sell homeware and different items like that. it had been in trouble for a little while and business had been dwindling so we know the administrators have now said that the deal or the potential deal they were talking about to buy wilko has fallen through. this could mean very bad news for many of the 12,500 people who work for wilko. of course there might be something that can be done, we are waiting to hear from wilko itself, but that is the news for now. more on this story as and when we get it. the former conservative mp antoinette sandbach has asked to be removed from an academic*s research that connects her to a slave—owning ancestor. malik al nasir named ms sandbach as a descendant of samuel sandbach, a liverpool merchant who had a stake in plantations in the west indies in a 2021 video. she argues the links are not in the public interest. and that they breach her right to privacy. well, we can now speak to the poet, author and researcher who outlined the ancestral connection between antionette sandbach and samuel sandbach — malik al nasir. why did you decide to conduct this research? i why did you decide to conduct this research? . , , why did you decide to conduct this research? ., , , ., why did you decide to conduct this own ancestry. there was a footballer that was discovered, andrew watson who had the same family name as my father, and he had played for scotland in the 1880s, and he looked just like me, my name was mark watson, became a muslim and change my name. he was from the same place in demerara when my father came from so i started this research will be to try and find my connection to what became the world's first black international footballer, who captained the scottish national side in the 1880s, andrew watson. in the course of my research i uncovered letters from his father, who was a white scottish sugar planter called peter miller watson, was a save trader, and he married a free woman called hannah rose who was born enslaved but her mother was freed by her father who was also a white save trader. so this family connection was essentially a genealogical study and then what happened was the research continued while more names started to emerge within the family tree and because the save traders or had exploited the black women and had exploited the black women and had black children. as a consequence, it became kind of a jigsaw puzzle to put it together who was who, and what the relationships were an oligomer documents i started to discover that they all worked for a series of companies that were interlinked with a main company called sandbach, the founders of which was korea, was a success it said. we should stress there was no damage reported, and no suggestion that actual nuclear weapons were used. pictured here is perhaps one of the reasons why pyongyang is north korea. how many moons can you think of? well — there's a full moon, a crescent moon, a harvest moon — to name a few — and every so often you get to see a blue super—moon. that was the case last
