runner up tumbling out of the us open. tsisipas not blaming anyone else though. everything on court is under my control and under my talent and the way i can play this sport, i have shown that on the court. if i'm not able to deliver then i am not supposed to be doing well, and that is what happened this summer. i was not good enough to deliver and score good results. world numberi novak djokovic has cruised into the thirs round of the us open with a straight sets win over spain's berna bay zapata miralles. djokovic efficient as always. the 23—time major winner only needed the one break in the first set, before cranking up the gears to take the second and third sets, 6—4, 6—1, 6—1. carlos alcaraz had a short start to the defence of his us open men's title, after german opponent dominik koepfer retired injured midway through their first—round match. the 20—year—old spaniard led 6—2 3—2 when koepfer, who rolled his ankle minutes into the match, had to stop. koepfer, ranked 75th, went over on his ankle in the first game of the match, needing a medical timeout and gamely continuing for an hour before deciding it was best to stop. on the women's side, world number one iga swiatek eased into the third round on wednesday with a comfortable straight sets defeat of australia's daria saville. the reigning champion was always in control taking the match 6—3, 6—4. swiatek will now play slovenia's kaja juvan on friday. number two seed aryna sabalenka is safely through to the second round. the belarusian easing past world number 112, maryna zanevska, 6—3, 6—2. two—time champion venus williams, who was given a wildcard to the event, lost 6—1 6—1 to belgium's greet minnen. it was, though, the as—years—old's 24th appearance in the singles draw at the us open, which extends her extraordinary record. england comprehensively thrashed new zealand by seven wickets, with a professional performance in the first t20 of their four—match series at chester—le—street, in durham. switching formats for their first action since the ashes a month ago, the hosts romped to victory in a chase of 140 with six overs to spare. after a blistering start from the visitors, where they scored 3 sixes off the first over, wickets began to tumble, with debutant brian carse taking 3 for 23. new zealand were eventually restricted to a below—par 139 for nine. dawid malan*s 5a from from 42 balls was the bedrock of england's response, but it was left to liam livingstone to finish with a flourish, as england won by 7 wickets, i could not have asked for a better start. you know, when i got the news from josh yesterday afternoon that i would be playing, a lot of excitement to be able to play at durham, you know, where i have played my cricket over the last nine years. so a lot of familiar faces and familiar surroundings, so probablyjust made me feel that little bit more relaxed coming into the ground today. for them to come back into the power play so strongly was a credit to them. i think we did have time to be able to pull it back to the middle, where we would apply a bit of pressure but unfortunately it was just one of those days where you lose wickets at the wrong time so, you know, on another given day, when things go a little bit more our way we may have posted a slightly bigger total there. england women's match fees for internationals have been increased to equal the men's with immediate effect. the change was recommended in the independent commission for equity in cricket report. it said women were paid 25% of men's fees for white—ball and 15% for tests by the ecb. england captain heather knight said the change was "fantastic to see". it is another really good step forward for the game. we want to thank them again for taking us to this point. it is great, isn't it. it is kind of a reward for what has been a remarkable tournament and you talk about the women's game playing a really big role in the sport and putting the women's game alongside the man is all backing it up notjust with words but actions as well. and revenge is a dish best served cold. twelve months on from being eliminated by rangers at the same stage, psv eindhoven will be dining at europe's top table this season, after thrashing scottish side to book their place in the champions league group stage. the two teams started the second leg all square. but a dominant display from the dutch side saw them cruise to a huge aggregate win, 5—1 on the night, so 7—3 over the two legs. in the other fixtures, belgian side royal antwerp are through to the group stage after they beat greek side aek athens 2—1, 3—1 on aggregate. while danish champions fc copenhagen squeezed past polish side rakov chestochowa, with a 2—1 aggregate win. there were five games in the english league cup on wednesday. blackburn scored 8 as they swept aside harrogate town. chelsea were a goal down against league two side wimbledon but recovered to go through. burnley left it til the 90th minute before zeki amdouni scored for a 1—0 win at nottingham forest. premier league side sheffield united and league one side lincoln city were goalless after ninety minutes, but lincoln went through 3—2 on penalties. and everton were almost on the end of a major shock at bottom of the football league side doncaster, going a goal down thanks tojoe ironside, before eventually scoring twice in the second half through new signing beto, and arnaut danjuma. the draw for the third round has been made. here are some of the top picks. newcastle versus manchester city is arguably the biggest tie of the round. there are several all premier league ties, with chelsea versus brighton, manchester united versus crystal palace, and aston villa versus everton, and arsenal verus brentford. liverpool are home to leicester. some transfer news for you now and monaco have completed the £35m signing of striker folarin balogun from arsenal on a five—year deal. the 22—year—old usa forward returns to france after scoring 22 goals on loan at reims last season. balogun had not featured for arsenal in the premier league so far this season despite first—choice striker gabriel jesus being out injured. manchester city have reached a verbal agreement with wolves over a £47.3m deal to sign midfielder matheus nunes. the deal for the 25—year—old hasn't been formally agreed yet but if completed, there will be no add—ons. city had a previous bid for the portugal international rejected last week, with wolves believed to be wanting in excess of £60m. but separately wolves have agreed to sign city's england under—21 international tommy doyle on loan with an option to buy more injury worries for manchester united. france defender raphael varane will miss a few weeks with the injury he sustained against nottingham forest in the english premier league last weekend. varane was forced off at half—time of saturday's 3—2 win at old trafford. luke shaw is also sidelined ahead of the weekend's match against arsenal the mother of luis rubiales, the president of the spanish football federation, has been taken to hospital on the third day of her hunger strike. angeles bejar locked herself in a church in the town of motril earlier this week in protest at the accusations against her son, following his conduct after the world cup final, when he kissed the spanish playerjenni hermoso on the lips. the spanish federation has called on rubiales to resign and fifa has suspended him but so far he has not stepped down. rob page has named his wales squad for next week's friendly against south korea and the euro qualifier in latvia four days later. luton*s tom lockyer is involved for the first time since he collapsed in the championship play—off final in may. he's since undergone an operation to address an irregular heartbeat. we all watched the events unfold in if the playerfinal and we were old concern and it has been nothing but positivity since that day. he has had great news. back to normal for him personally. it should be very proud about how he has recovered after that. it was a dream of his to play in the championship and he has achieved that. top specialist, top searches have been dealing with him and he has been given the all clear. in his head he is happy and i think you can see that in the way he is playing. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc. co. uk/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. for those of you that enjoy a big moon, there's a real treat outside at the moment. a super blue moon. what's one of those? well, the "super" bit is when the moon's closest to the earth for the year, and the "blue" bit the second full moon of the month, so a super blue moon. and this is how sam's house spotted the rising moon here in derbyshire just over the last few hours. now, looking at the weather picture at the moment, we do have some thicker cloud out to the west, that's going to rather spoil the sight of the moon. but across the eastern side of the country, we've got the clearest of the skies. now through the day on thursday, we do have some rain that's going to be spreading in from the west, and that will start to make inroads towards south—west wales and south—west england over the next few hours. as that arrives, so will quite mild air. so 1a degrees in plymouth as we start the day on thursday, cooler across the north and east of the country. so north—east, south—west split with the weather for thursday, lovely start to the day for scotland, across much of northern england. bright with hazy sunshine for east anglia. but across western areas we've got the rain moving in and some of the rain will be quite heavy across southern areas of wales, southern areas of england. otherwise it's probably going to come through quite light and patchy, really. top temperatures around about 18—20 degrees for many areas. now on into friday's forecast, the remnants of that area of low pressure still with us. and really it's a day of sunny spells and a few showers. probably the cloudiest zone of weather will be across northern england, north wales, the north midlands and northern ireland, where there'll be a few patches of rain, one to two showers elsewhere. temperatures, again, high teens to low 20s. but as we head into the weekend, we've got a real change in the weather patterns. an area of high pressure is set to move in across the uk. we're not seeing too many of those over the last couple of months, i can tell you. now saturday morning there might be a few mist and fog patches first thing, but otherwise it's a fine—looking day. lots of sunshine to look forward to with just a little bit of fair weather cloud popping up for a time. temperatures rising across the board pretty much into the low twenties, 23 towards south—east england. and that is going to feel warm in the september sunshine. and we've got more of that to come through sunday and deep into the new week as well. so quite a long spell of dry and sunny weather finally looks set to arrive. bye for now. live from washington, this is bbc news.
