committee came as no surprise to anyone. yevgeny prigozhin and his right—hand man as well as a couple of other key commanders from the wagner mercer group were presumed dead following the air crash four days ago. now the big question is what caused yevgeny prigozhin*s plane to crash, and even though the investigations committee said on friday that it was looking at every possible version of what happened, few independent observers would trust that government agency to come up with the full and complete truth of what happened, because it is completely controlled by the kremlin, and as we know, there was a growing chorus of voices arguing that getting rid of yevgeny prigozhin would possibly be a way for vladimir putin to reassert his authority following wagner's failed mutiny back injune, but again that is speculation, completely unconfirmed. and as i say, the russian investigations committee is hardly an independent investigative agency to look into it. find hardly an friday, and it can be seen as a way to strengthen government control over the proliferating number of private military companies involved in the so—called special military operation against ukraine, but it remains to be seen whether the move will be anything more than a symbolic gesture where new recruits will be made to kneel before the russian flag and swear allegiance to the russian federation and the russian constitution. as things stand at the moment, it is difficult to see it as a bullet—proof way of making sure that whoever signs up to the fight against ukraine stays loyal to russia's official top brass, as it were. but it is clearly a concern in the kremlin that all these private groups, even though we know now that wagner was funded, there is still a concern that these groups can have more loyalty to their commanders rather than the russian defence ministry. rather than the russian defence minist . ., ., , , ministry. indeed, and how is this -la in: ministry. indeed, and how television, it didn't exactly play up the importance of the crash. the reports that it broadcast were short and dry and merely said that yevgeny prigozhin*s name was on the list of passengers declared as flying, and there was absolutely no effort to explain the significance of what happened or speculate about the possible causes. but still russians can access social media, and that's where a lot of speculation is happening. for example, social media accounts linked to wagner, hours after the plane crash they started speculating that yevgeny prigozhin*s plane had been shut down deliberately by russian air defences. they stopped short of pointing the finger of blame at the kremlin directly, but that is one popular theory circulating among the commentators on russian social military aircraft, which was taking part in exercises near the remote melville island, off the coast of darwin, in the northern territory. five marines have been transported to darwin in a serious condition. here's the australian prime minister anthony albanese. the initial reports suggest that the incident involves just us defence force personnel, that there are no members of the australian defence force involved in this incident. our focus as a government and as a department of defence is very much on incident response and on making sure that every support and assistance is given at this difficult time. that was anthony albanese e. our reporter in sydney, phil mercer, has the latest. officials have confirmed that three us marines have died in this aircraft crash. this took place on the tiwi islands, about 60 kilometres to the north of darwin, the capital city of australia's northern territory. so right at the north in the middle of australia, on melville island, one of the tiwi islands, this vertical take—off aircraft has crashed. this is an osprey, one of two us vertical take—off aircraft that have been involved in military drills between australian forces and us military forces in the northern territory. we understand that 23 people were on board. three us marines have been confirmed to have been killed. at least five others have been flown to the royal darwin hospital, that is the biggest hospital in the city of darwin, which has initiated its highest emergency response after this aircraft crash here in australia earlier today. and the people that have been injured have been flown to a hospital in darwin? yes, and we understand that at least one is undergoing surgery and hospital officials are saying they do expect more patients to arrive. what we have seen is this aircraft came down on melville island, as i say, about 60 kilometres to the north of the australian mainland in the northern territory. initially there were a great deal of other army aircraft and military personnel rushing to the scene. some of those injured have been treated on melville island but we do expect more to be transferred to that hospital in darwin. now, all of these troops and military personnel were taking part in broad military exercises involving the us, australia, east timor and also indonesia as well, and we did hear before from the australian prime minister anthony albanese saying that this was a regrettable incident and the australian government is expected to make a further update, or give a further update, on this accident in the next few hours. that was phil mercer in sydney for us. here in the uk, nadine dorries, the conservative mp and former minister, has resigned as a member of parliament with a scathing attack on the prime minister, rishi sunak. ms dorries had said she would resign injune after claiming that downing street had blocked her receiving a peerage, something which number 10 denied. but she remained as an mp, saying she was continuing to work for her constituents despite coming under pressure from other mps to go through with her promise to leave the house of commons. she has also released a resignation statement, saying that rishi sunak has demeaned his office by whipping up a public frenzy against her. and she also accuses mr sunak of running a zombie parliament with a government which is adrift. she also claims he has squandered the goodwill of the nation. well, the uk government's veterans* affairs minister, johnny mercer, refuted the suggestion in nadine dorries' letter that since taking office prime minister rishi sunak has presided over a "zombie parliament". well, obviously i don't agree with that. i sit here this morning in plymouth and constituents like mine are £3,300 better off because of the help with their energy bills. you know, more strategic issues like the nhs has got a long term workforce plan. if you look at my area with veterans and a single mental health care pathway for veterans, ending veterans* homelessness. this year a lot has gone gone on, but she has her views, she has written a personal letter to the prime minister, she is entitled to that view but, you know, i think people are tired of raking over the course of the borisjohnson government. we need to get on and in this country properly and make people feel that progress before the next election. johnny mercer there. our political corresepondent helen catt told me that the resignation letter attacking the prime minister didn't come as much of a shock. it's always a problem when you've got a formerly senior member of your party attacking you in public. it looks like you have a divided party. and certainly that's something the leader of the liberal democrats this morning has been seizing on in his broadcast interviews, he has been talking about it showing division within the party. quite how representative she is of the party as a whole, i think is debatable. as i said, she was very closely tied to borisjohnson, the former prime minister, and those who supported him within the party. so i think to that extent, she reflects some of the anger that came off the back of him stepping down as prime minister, two prime ministers ago now. so there is that, but is it an indication of broader discontent within the party? i think we should be a bit wary of seeing it as that so much. i mean, certainly it seemed before they all broke up for the summer recess that mps had started to be starting to pull behind rishi sunak and that will be increasingly important for the government as it goes into the run—up up to the next general election, which we are expecting to happen at some point next year. zimbabwe's president emmerson mnangagwa has been re—elected re—elected to serve a second term with just over half of the total vote. the opposition claims there has been widespread vote—rigging, and international observers say the vote has fallen short of democratic standards. mr mnangagwe, known as the crocodile, which refers to his ruthless nature, faces many challenges. zimbabwe still faces high inflation — currently running at an annual rate of over 70% — as well as poverty. the electoral commission say his main challenger, nelson chamisa, secured 44% of the vote. president emmerson mnangagwa held a press conference a short time ago, where he was also asked about those concerns about the integrity of the vote. the elections have come and gone. i am humbled by the trust and confidence that you, my fellow countrymen and women, have imposed on me once again to stand as president of your great country zimbabwe. iamso i am so happy that the vote was won fairly in broad daylight. our correspondent shingai nyoka is in harare and has more on the result. president emmerson mnangagwa addressed the press a day after saturday's election results pronounced him president of zimbabwe for a second and final term. and he appeared unshaken in the face of criticism from the opposition party, which labelled this election a blatant and gigantic fraud. he said he was humbled by the confidence shown in him by zimbabweans, and also defended the much criticised electoral commission, and he said that they conducted a transparent process. now, president mnangagwa won 53% of the vote and avoided a runoff. but what he didn't avoid was fallout. we've seen criticism from his regional allies, the southern african diplomatic community, sadc, which said that while polling was largely free and fair on voting day, that the election itself fell short of the standards of a democratic election. now, this is a stinging criticism from his allies, and for a president who, when he came into power in 2017, vowed that he would institute political reforms, respect for human rights and really put zimbabwe's controversial past behind it. so what happens now? well, the opposition, which did not attend the announcement of the election results, has said that these results were hastily compiled. it says it has its own evidence that shows that they are not, in fact, accurate. they have seven days to appeal the results of the electoral commission, but they really don't seem to have confidence in the courts. in 2018, nelson chamisa went to the courts to try to overturn president emmerson mnangagwa's election win then and failed. so, we just wait to hear what their plans are. but this really has been a controversial election for zimbabwe, in the face of what people were hoping would be a credible election that would usher the country out of this economic and political crisis. shingai nyoka, bbc news, harare. one of ukraine's most celebrated fighter pilots and two other airmen have been killed in a mid—air crash. captain andrii pilshchykov won fame taking part in close range aerial battles over kyiv during the early phase of russia's invasion, flying under the call—sign juice. the three pilots were killed when two l—39 combat training aircraft collided over a region west of kyiv. the ukrainian military called the deaths "painful and irreparable" losses, and the military paid tribute to pilshchykov as a young officer with "mega knowledge and mega talent". and in his evening address, president volodymyr zelensky acknowledged how much captain andrii pilshchykov had done for the country. translation: an investigation is being year, andrii pilshchykov spoke to the bbc about the work he and his fellow pilots were doing, especially their incredibly difficult task of intercepting russian cruise missiles before they hit ukraine's cities. intercepting the cruise missiles, your mission is to save the lives on the ground, to save the city. you're not able... it's a terrible feeling that somebody will die. somebody will defence, and they shooted them down. but russians are improving their tactics, and we need something more advanced than ourjets, for air defence, for interception of cruise missiles. three people are dead in the us state of florida in what authorities are calling a racially—motivated mass shooting. the attack took place in the city of jacksonville at a dollar general store. the city's sheriff says the suspected shooter was a white male in his 20s who turned the gun on himself. he killed two women and one man, all black, with no other injuries reported. the gunman was carrying a handgun and an ar—is style rifle while wearing a mask and tactical vest. the sheriff says it's believed the shooter acted alone, with no evidence he was part of a wider group. the head coach of spain's women's football team, jorge vilda, has condemned the behaviour of the country's football federation president after luis rubiales was suspended by fifa for kissing playerjenni hermoso at the world cup final last week. she's accused mr rubiales of kissing her on the lips without consent after spain's victory last sunday. the federation has threatened her with legal action saying she was misrepresenting their plane crashed on wednesday. authorities said genetic tests had established that the identities of all ten people on board the private jet matched the names on the passenger list. the exact circumstances behind the crash between moscow and st petersburg remain unclear. president vladimir putin had already passed on his condolences to mr prigozhin*s family, describing him as a talented person who had made serious mistakes. the mercenary leader had led an aborted mutiny against the russian military injune amid growing tension with russian commanders over the war in ukraine. he'd since relocated to belarus. and just over a month later he has died in this plane crash, and according to authorities, that has now been confirmed that he has died. genetic testing has taken place. you can read more about that on our website or on the app. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. just a few days left now of meteorological summer and the weather is looking a little bit mixed. we are going to see some late summer sunshine around, but there are also going to be some showers, particularly through the course of today. some of them could be heavy, potentially thundery in the east, but we are expecting a slightly drier and brighter day tomorrow as this area of high pressure in the atlantic starts to topple in. but what we've got today, we've got a front approaching here from the west and low pressure sitting out to the east of the uk. so heading through the day, then, we'll see heavy showers cropping up for parts of northern england through the east midlands, down towards the southeast. these could well be heavy, bringing some rumbles of thunder, lightning and some large hail. but things are looking a little bit drier for parts of central southern england into wales. we've got this frontal system bringing more cloud for the southwest of england, northern ireland and western scotland. patchy rain across this zone. but for the east of scotland, some sunshine and temperatures between about 14 to 22 degrees out there today. we could catch a passing shower at reading and at leeds festivals today, but it shouldn't be raining for long i think. and those showers will tend to ease away into the evening hours. and the chance of one or two heavy showers today at the notting hill carnival, too. but if you're heading to notting hill tomorrow, you've got more chance of staying dry with some sunshine around, too. through the evening hours, the showers in the east fade away. this zone of cloud and patchy rain drifts eastwards, but it's tending to peter out overnight. so some clear spells, some mist and fog patches here and there and temperatures down into mid single figures for one or two more rural spots in the north and the west. so that's how we start monday. monday, a bank holiday for many of us, of course, is looking drier and brighter. so some more sunshine, some areas of cloud and a few showers drifting across parts of england, i think through the morning. could see one or two working in from the northwest later in the day, too, but predominantly a dry day and temperatures between about 17 to 21 degrees. so an improvement for scotland and for northern ireland compared to recent days. looking ahead then into tuesday and we've got low pressure sweeping across the uk, higher pressure tries to move in from the atlantic so that's squeezing away the heaviest of the showers. but we'll see this line of cloud and a few spells of light rain crossing parts of england and wales and then more heavy, blustery showers across the north west of scotland. but certainly some sunshine in between these areas of any showers and temperatures 15 to 22 degrees. it looks like many of us should see a drier day on wednesday, but then the weather looks unsettled for the remainder of the week. a bit up and down, sunshine, heavy showers, temperatures typical for the time of year. bye bye. this is bbc news. the headlines: russian investigators say genetic testing has confirmed that the wagner mercenary boss, yevgeny prigozhin, was among those who died when their plane came down on wednesday. the kremlin has denied ordering the assassination of mr prigozhin, who was a former close aide of president putin. us officials say three us marines have been killed, and at least 20 injured, after a military aircraft crashed during exercises in australia's northern territory. 23 people were on board. five people have been transferred to darwin for treatment. zimbabwe's president emmerson mnangagwa has rejected criticism from international observers about the country's recent electio, about the country's recent election, after being declared the winner and securing a second term. the opposition party has labelled the vote a *gigantic fraud*, and observers say the vote fell short of international standards. now on bbc news — hardtalk.

friday, and it can be seen as a way to strengthen government control over the proliferating number of private military companies involved in the so—called special military operation against ukraine, but it remains to be seen whether the move will be anything more than a symbolic gesture where new recruits will be made to kneel before the russian flag and swear allegiance to the russian federation and the russian constitution. as things stand at the moment, it is difficult to see it as a bullet—proof way of making sure that whoever signs up to the fight against ukraine stays loyal to russia's official top brass, as it were. but it is clearly a concern in the kremlin that all these private groups, even though we know now that wagner was funded, there is still a concern that these groups can television, it didn't exactly play up the importance of the crash. the reports that it broadcast were short and dry and merely said that yevgeny prigozhin*s name was on the list of passengers declared as flying, and there was absolutely no effort to explain the significance of what happened or speculate about the possible causes. but still russians can access social media, and that's where a lot of speculation is happening. for example, social media accounts linked to wagner, hours after the plane crash they started speculating that yevgeny prigozhin*s plane had been shut down deliberately by russian air defences. they stopped short of pointing the finger of blame at the kremlin directly, but that is one popular theory circulating among the commentators on russian social military aircraft, which was taking part in exercises near the remote melville island, off the coast of darwin, in the northern territory. five marines have been transported to darwin in a serious condition. here's the australian prime minister anthony albanese. the initial reports suggest that the incident involves just us defence force personnel, that there are no members of the australian defence force involved in this incident. our focus as a government and as a department of defence is very much on incident response and on making sure that every support and assistance is given at this difficult time. that was anthony albanese e. our reporter in sydney, phil mercer, has the latest. officials have confirmed that three us marines have died in this aircraft crash. this took place on the tiwi islands, about 60 kilometres to the north of darwin, the capital city of australia's northern territory. so right at the north in the middle of australia, on melville island, one of the tiwi islands, this vertical take—off aircraft has crashed. this is an osprey, one of two us vertical take—off aircraft that have been involved in military drills between australian forces and us military forces in the northern territory. we understand that 23 people were on board. three us marines have been confirmed to have been killed. at least five others have been flown to the royal darwin hospital, that is the biggest hospital in the city of darwin, which has initiated its highest emergency response after this aircraft crash here in australia earlier today. and the people that have been injured have been flown to a hospital in darwin? yes, and we understand that at least one is undergoing surgery and hospital officials are saying they do expect more patients to arrive. what we have seen is this aircraft came down on melville island, as i say, about 60 kilometres to the north of the australian mainland in the northern territory. initially there were a great deal of other army aircraft and military personnel rushing to the scene. some of those injured have been treated on melville island but we do expect more to be transferred to that hospital in darwin. now, all of these troops and military personnel were taking part in broad military exercises involving the us, australia, east timor and also indonesia as well, and we did hear before from the australian prime minister anthony albanese saying that this was a regrettable incident and the australian government is expected to make a further update, or give a further update, on this accident in the next few hours. that was phil mercer in sydney for us. here in the uk, nadine dorries, the conservative mp and former minister, has resigned as a member of parliament with a scathing attack on the prime minister, rishi sunak. ms dorries had said she would resign injune after claiming that downing street had blocked her receiving a peerage, something which number 10 denied. but she remained as an mp, saying she was continuing to work for her constituents despite coming under pressure from other mps to go through with her promise to leave the house of commons. she has also released a resignation statement, saying that rishi sunak has demeaned his office by whipping up a public frenzy against her. and she also accuses mr sunak of running a zombie parliament with a government which is adrift. she also claims he has squandered the goodwill of the nation. well, the uk government's veterans* affairs minister, johnny mercer, refuted the suggestion in nadine dorries' letter that since taking office prime minister rishi sunak has presided over a "zombie parliament". well, obviously i don't agree with that. i sit here this morning in plymouth and constituents like mine are £3,300 better off because of the help with their energy bills. you know, more strategic issues like the nhs has got a long term workforce plan. if you look at my area with veterans and a single mental health care pathway for veterans, ending veterans* homelessness. this year a lot has gone gone on, but she has her views, she has written a personal letter to the prime minister, she is entitled to that view but, you know, i think people are tired of raking over the course of the borisjohnson government. we need to get on and in this country properly and make people feel that progress before the next election. johnny mercer there. our political corresepondent helen catt told me that the resignation letter attacking the prime minister didn't come as much of a shock. it's always a problem when you've got a formerly senior member of your party attacking you in public. it looks like you have a divided party. and certainly that's something the leader of the liberal democrats this morning has been seizing on in his broadcast interviews, he has been talking about it showing division within the party. quite how representative she is of the party as a whole, i think is debatable. as i said, she was very closely tied to borisjohnson, the former prime minister, and those who supported him within the party. so i think to that extent, she reflects some of the anger that came off the back of him stepping down as prime minister, two prime ministers ago now. so there is that, but is it an indication of broader discontent within the party? i think we should be a bit wary of seeing it as that so much. i mean, certainly it seemed before they all broke up for the summer recess that mps had started to be starting to pull behind rishi sunak and that will be increasingly important for the government as it goes into the run—up up to the next general election, which we are expecting to happen at some point next year. zimbabwe's president emmerson mnangagwa has been re—elected re—elected to serve a second term with just over half of the total vote. the opposition claims there has been widespread vote—rigging, and international observers say the vote has fallen short of democratic standards. mr mnangagwe, known as the crocodile, which refers to his ruthless nature, faces many challenges. zimbabwe still faces high inflation — currently running at an annual rate of over 70% — as well as poverty. the electoral commission say his main challenger, nelson chamisa, secured 44% of the vote. president emmerson mnangagwa held a press conference a short time ago, where he was also asked about those concerns about the integrity of the vote. the elections have come and gone. i am humbled by the trust and confidence that you, my fellow countrymen and women, have imposed on me once again to stand as president of your great country zimbabwe. iamso i am so happy that the vote was won fairly in broad daylight. our correspondent shingai nyoka is in harare and has more on the result. president emmerson mnangagwa addressed the press a day after saturday's election results pronounced him president of zimbabwe for a second and final term. and he appeared unshaken in the face of criticism from the opposition party, which labelled this election a blatant and gigantic fraud. he said he was humbled by the confidence shown in him by zimbabweans, and also defended the much criticised electoral commission, and he said that they conducted a transparent process. now, president mnangagwa won 53% of the vote and avoided a runoff. but what he didn't avoid was fallout. we've seen criticism from his regional allies, the southern african diplomatic community, sadc, which said that while polling was largely free and fair on voting day, that the election itself fell short of the standards of a democratic election. now, this is a stinging criticism from his allies, and for a president who, when he came into power in 2017, vowed that he would institute political reforms, respect for human rights and really put zimbabwe's controversial past behind it. so what happens now? well, the opposition, which did not attend the announcement of the election results, has said that these results were hastily compiled. it says it has its own evidence that shows that they are not, in fact, accurate. they have seven days to appeal the results of the electoral commission, but they really don't seem to have confidence in the courts. in 2018, nelson chamisa went to the courts to try to overturn president emmerson mnangagwa's election win then and failed. so, we just wait to hear what their plans are. but this really has been a controversial election for zimbabwe, in the face of what people were hoping would be a credible election that would usher the country out of this economic and political crisis. shingai nyoka, bbc news, harare. one of ukraine's most celebrated fighter pilots and two other airmen have been killed in a mid—air crash. captain andrii pilshchykov won fame taking part in close range aerial battles over kyiv during the early phase of russia's invasion, flying under the call—sign juice. the three pilots were killed when two l—39 combat training aircraft collided over a region west of kyiv. the ukrainian military called the deaths "painful and irreparable" losses, and the military paid tribute to pilshchykov as a young officer with "mega knowledge and mega talent". and in his evening address, president volodymyr zelensky acknowledged how much captain andrii pilshchykov had done for the country. translation: an investigation is being year, andrii pilshchykov spoke to the bbc about the work he and his fellow pilots were doing, especially their incredibly difficult task of intercepting russian cruise missiles before they hit ukraine's cities. intercepting the cruise missiles, your mission is to save the lives on the ground, to save the city. you're not able... it's a terrible feeling that somebody will die. somebody will dead in the us state of florida in what authorities are calling a racially—motivated mass shooting. the attack took place in the city of jacksonville at a dollar general store. the city's sheriff says the suspected shooter was a white male in his 20s who turned the gun on himself. he killed two women and one man, all black, with no other injuries reported. the gunman was carrying a handgun and an their plane crashed on wednesday. authorities said genetic tests had established that the identities of all ten people on board the private jet matched the names on the passenger list. the exact circumstances behind the crash between moscow and st petersburg remain unclear. president vladimir putin had already passed on his condolences to mr prigozhin*s family, describing him as a talented person who had made serious mistakes. the mercenary leader had led an aborted mutiny against the russian military injune amid growing tension with russian commanders over the war in ukraine. he'd since relocated to belarus. and just over a month later he has died in this plane crash, and according to authorities, that has now been confirmed that he has died. genetic testing has taken place. you can read more about that on our website or on the app. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. just a few days left now of meteorological summer and the weather is looking a little bit mixed. we are going to see some late summer sunshine around, but there are also going to be some showers, particularly through the course of today. some of them could be heavy, potentially thundery in the east, but we are expecting a slightly drier and brighter day tomorrow as this area of high pressure in the atlantic starts to topple in. but what we've got today, we've got a front approaching here from the west and low pressure sitting out to the east of the uk. so heading through the day, then, we'll see heavy showers cropping up for parts of northern england through the east midlands, down towards the southeast. these could well be heavy, bringing some rumbles of thunder, lightning and some large hail. but things are looking a little bit drier for parts of central southern england into wales. we've got this frontal system bringing more cloud for the southwest of england, northern ireland and western scotland. patchy rain across this zone. but for the east of scotland, some sunshine and temperatures between about 14 to 22 degrees out there today. we could catch a passing shower at reading and at leeds festivals today, but it shouldn't be raining for long i think. and those showers will tend to ease away into the evening hours. and the chance of one or two heavy showers today at the notting hill carnival, too. but if you're heading to notting hill tomorrow, you've got more chance of staying dry with some sunshine around, too. through the evening hours, the showers in the east fade away. this zone of cloud and patchy rain drifts eastwards, but it's tending to peter out overnight. so some clear spells, some mist and fog patches here and there and temperatures down into mid single figures for one or two more rural spots in the north and the west. so that's how we start monday. monday, a bank holiday for many of us, of course, is looking drier and brighter. so some more sunshine, some areas of cloud and a few showers drifting across parts of england, i think through the morning. could see one or two working in from the northwest later in the day, too, but predominantly a dry day and temperatures between about 17 to 21 degrees. so an improvement for scotland and for northern ireland compared to recent days. looking ahead then into tuesday and we've got low pressure sweeping across the uk, higher pressure tries to move in from the atlantic so that's squeezing away the heaviest of the showers. but we'll see this line of cloud and a few spells of light rain crossing parts of england and wales and then more heavy, blustery showers across the north west of scotland. but certainly some sunshine in between these areas of any showers and temperatures 15 to 22 degrees. it looks like many of us should see a drier day on wednesday, but then the weather looks unsettled for the remainder of the week. a bit up and down, sunshine, heavy showers, temperatures typical for the time of year. bye bye. this is bbc news. the headlines: russian investigators say genetic testing has confirmed that the wagner mercenary boss, yevgeny prigozhin, was among those who died when their plane came down on wednesday. the kremlin has denied ordering the assassination of mr prigozhin, who was a former close aide of president putin. us officials say three us marines have been killed, and at least 20 injured, after a military aircraft crashed during exercises in australia's northern territory.
