following spain's victory over england in sydney. the organisation said it would take legal action against her. more than 80 players have now said they'll boycott games until he quits. our reporter sergi forcada is in the newsroom. luis rubiales says he will fight the accusations against him. tell us more about his response to fifa's provisional suspension. this is the latest statement by the spanish football federation and in which luis rubiales said we will fight these accusations by fifa, saying we will legally defend himself and the competent bodies saying he trusts fifa and we will get the chance to defend his defence so the truth, his truth, prevails and that he is also able to prove that he is innocent which is something he has been repeating throughout the past few days saying he did not do anything wrong when the spanish national team were celebrating the world cup a few days ago. this is obviously the response, the answer to what fifa said earlier and in an earlier statement they said that luis rubiales has now been provisionally suspended and that suspension will last for 90 days starting today while there is an ongoing investigation. another thing fifa are saying as he should refrain through himself or third parties from contacting or trying to contact with jenni from contacting or trying to contact withjenni hermoso and that is relevant because a few days ago the spanish football federation said they had tried to contactjenni hermoso to talk about this incident and now what fifa is saying is while this investigation is ongoing, do not contact her. we know 11 members of spain's coaching team have resigned, what more reaction has there been? a day of lots of statements, counter statements, lots of reaction so the latest we have now is that 11 he said he had done nothing wrong and of course lots of things changing and lots of attention in international but specifically spanish media with many wondering not if but when luis rubiales will go. just to bring you some breaking news. in the past few moments, nadeem doris has resigned her commons seat with a scathing attack on her party leader and prime minister. with a scathing attack on her party leaderand prime minister. —— nadine dorries has resigned. she claimed rishi sunak had stood in the way and that had been denied by downing street so just to bring you that breaking news again in the past few minutes the conservative mp and former culture secretary nadine dorries has resigned her commons seat with a scathing attack on the prime minister. we will bring you more on that as we get it. around two thousand items are thought to have been stolen, from the british museum. but some of the missing treasures have started to be recovered. that's according to the museum's chairman. the organisation is one of the uk's most prestigious cultural institutions, but revealed earlier this month, that a number of treasures were reported missing, stolen or damaged. a member of museum staff suspected of involvement has been sacked. and hartwig fischer, the museum director, is stepping down— after saying a 2021 investigation was mishandled. former chancellor, george osborne, is now chair of trustees at the british museum and has been speaking to radio 4's today programme. on behalf of the british museum i want to apologise for what has happened. we believe we have been the victim of thefts over a long period of time and frankly, more could have been done to prevent them, but i promise you this. it is a mess that we are going to clear up and i can tell you today that we have already started to recover some of the stolen items and we are going to deliver the stronger leadership that the public and the dedicated staff of the museum deserve and make sure that we emerge with a stronger british museum that is fit for the 21st century. there's been disruption to rail services across much of england today, as members of the rmt union take part in their latest strike over pay and conditions. there's a reduced timetable in place for much of the country, with some journeys into scotland and wales also affected. it's on the same day as events, including the notting hill carnival, and the reading and leeds festivals. vivienne nunis reports. it's the first day of the bank holiday weekend, but it's misery for many hoping to get away. 20,000 train workers are on strike. there's also planned engineering works. the end result? reduced services across the three days. meant to be going to manchester to an art exhibition and we bought tickets a long time ago. so yeah, it was a little bit of a shock to find out that our trains were cancelled. no, i understand why they're striking, but from a selfish point of view, it is kind of difficult. i think they've gone on too long and i do think it's time - that they started to sit around a table and sort it out. - today, the rmt union wrote to the rail delivery group, which represents 14 train operators, setting out what it calls a roadmap to end the current deadlock, as well as a backdated pay offer and a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies. the letter calls for each train company to set out full details of the changes it is planning to working practices. the industry argues those reforms are needed to fund pay rises. we want a decent pay rise. we're not greedy. we haven't had an offer that's a clean pay rise without strings attached. and we're not prepared to fund these very modest pay rises through job cuts and cuts to the services that will affect our members but will also affect the travelling public. the rail delivery group has offered rail workers a pay rise of 5% for 2022 and 4% for this year contingent on the proposed reforms. the government and the industry say the rmt should put that offer to its members for a vote. the strike has seen around half of services cancelled across england, —— cancelled across england, including here at euston, with other services delayed and with the aslef union rejecting a pay offer for train drivers, travellers can expect further strikes ahead after today's walkout by the rmt. train drivers in the aslef union go on strike next friday. they'll turn down overtime next saturday and that's the same day as another rmt strike. another sticking point is the government's planned ticket office closures, which the union opposes, meaning a resolution to end the strikes still looks a long way off. just to bring you that breaking news again, past few minutes the conservative mp and former culture secretary nadine dorries has resigned her commons seat with a scathing attack on the prime minister accusing rishi sunak of demeaning his office by whipping up a public frenzy against her. she was unhappy that she had not been given a seat in the house of lords as part of boris johnson's a seat in the house of lords as part of borisjohnson*s resignation honours list and had claimed rishi sunak had stood in the way. that has been denied by downing street. that is just news in and been denied by downing street. that isjust news in and in the been denied by downing street. that is just news in and in the past few minutes the conservative mp and former culture secretary nadine dorries has resigned her commons seat and we will bring you more on that as we get it. let's get some of the day's other news now. the london fire brigade says several homes have been severely damaged in a blaze at a building in east london. crews spent nearly three hours tackling the fire which took hold at the property, after 6pm on friday. fifteen people were removed from the building uninjured. three 18—year—olds and a 24—year—old have died in a car crash in county tipperary, in the republic of ireland. they ran into a wall in clonmel on friday evening. irish broadcaster rte understands they were on their way to meet friends to celebrate receiving exam results. monday marks 60 years since 250 thousand people gathered on the national mall in washington, dc and heard reverend doctor martin luther king junior deliver his celebrated "i have a dream" speech on the steps of the lincoln memorial. this is the scene live in washington, six decades on from the original speech. today — mr king's family, civil rights leaders and members of the public are gathering to mark the anniversary. it was the largest demonstration for human rights in us history and a display of unity among five of the nation's largest civil rights organisations. earlier we heard from dr shabna begum — co—ceo of the runnymeade trust — who gave us a breakdown of the orginal speech, and what it meant for the uk. the speech itself was part of a much wider civil rights movement, as we well know, which was campaigning for the end to segregation, as well as and what is not as commonly known as the economic kind of rights that black people in america were denied at the time. and the speech, as we well know, and we very much hear the last five minutes of it, but it's a 17 minute long speech and the start of it is a really challenging indictment of the american system. and the system it criticises are not only the civil rights which did go on to be won through the legislation that was created in the in the years afterwards. but it also talked about the economic injustice that was experienced and that, frankly, today still in america hasn't been resolved. and in terms of its importance for britain, clearly it was very inspiring and nourishing for lots of the civil rights movements that were developing here. but britain did have its own very specific history and geographies. if we think back to the 1960s, in the time of martin luther king speech, britain was still an imperial power. it was still facing challenge and independent movements from colonies in the caribbean and in africa. we had our own civil rights movement that was developing very much within the domestic context and inspired both by the american civil rights movement, but also by those wider independence movements as well. and just to bring in more on the breaking news now that nadine dorries has resigned her parliamentary seat with a scathing attack on rishi sunak, accusing him of demeaning his office by opening the gates to whip up a public frenzy against her. this news is coming in from pa, the tory mp said she submitted her resignation letter to the prime minister publishing the text on social media and in it she accused mr rishi sunak of leading attacks on her resulting in the police having to visit her home and contact her on a number of occasions due to threats to her person. the orchestrated and almost daily personal attacks demonstrates the low level of your government and what it has descended to, that is what it has descended to, that is what nadine dorries wrote. she also attacked his record in government saying since you took off as a year ago, the country is run by a zombie parliament where nothing meaningful has happened. she said she was delaying her exit while investigating why she was refused a seatin investigating why she was refused a seat in the lords and that breaking news just in that the conservative mp and former culture secretary nadine dorries has resigned her commons seat. and this has been denied by downing street. those scathing attacks that she made to downing street. in other news now... luis rubiales has been generating global headlines, for his behaviour at the women's world cup, and his defiance in the face of overwhelming criticism. but this is not the first time that the spanish football federation president has courted controversy. for a closer look at who he is and how he arrived at this point, here's our reporter tom brada. after a moderately successful career as a professional footballer, luis rubiales retired as a player in 2009 and quickly moved into the world of footballing politics. in march 2010, he became president of the association of spanish footballers, and his time there had been considered relatively controversy free. but in recent days, a former employee has made allegations against mr rubiales, saying he repeatedly humiliated her during his time there claim, which i should say the spanish football federation has rejected. in may 2018, mr rubiales secured the topjob at the spanish football federation, and just weeks later he was making headlines sacking the then spain managerjust two days before their opening game at the men's world cup. the drama has already begun. one of the favourites spain remarkably sacking their coach today over his decision tojoin real madrid. from that point on, luis rubiales has rarely been far from controversy. in 2022, he was accused of a conflict of interest when messages were leaked between mr rubiales and former player gerard pique discussing a deal to play the spanish super cup in saudi arabia. mr rubiales denied those accusations, but that same year he was the subject of two investigations by the spanish newspaper el confidential, accusing him of claiming rent expenses from the federation and of recording compromising calls with government officials. again, he has denied all the allegations. most recently, mr rubiales has drawn criticism for continuing to back the women's national team coachjorge vilda, despite his success on the pitch. mr vilda has been a polarizing figure, with several players claiming his behaviour was damaging their mental health. but luis rubiales has continued to stand by his colleague. jorge... we have been through a lot over this past year. on another level, a smaller one. but they tried to do the same thing to you that they are doing to me now. this latest round surrounding that controversial kiss means mr rubiales continues to generate global headlines. it's the final weekend of the world's largest arts festival. throughout the past month thousands of people from across the globe have visited the scottish capital to witness the edinburgh festival fringe. live now to our reporter courtney bembridge who is there. what's going on? tell is more. its 'ust what's going on? tell is more. it; just gone six o'clock here which in what is the reaction? nadine dorries said she would resign i in what is the reaction? nadine i dorries said she would resign back onjune 14 with immediate effect and on june 14 with immediate effect and it is well known that she is a close ally of the prime minister then borisjohnson and she was not at all pleased in which the way she was ejected from office —— like he was addicted from office or the short lived time of his successor liz truss either. it is unsurprising she has taken a swipe at the current prime minister rishi sunak in resignation statement and first of all let's look at the timing of what she has done, saying this will allow for a by—election to be called when parliament resumes in september and she is keen to see her mid—bedfordshire parliamentary seat be contested around the time of the conservative party conference putting maximum pressure again on rishi sunak though he may try to delay the date of that by—election but the opposition parties are already campaigning in her seat and seem to be hopeful of some success despite the fact she has a huge majority of more than 20,000 but let's look at the nature of the attack on rishi sunak, not desperately surprising that she wanted have a bit of a go at him but she is known for speaking her mind and she does not hold back so let me give you some choice quotes from her resignation statement saying you have no mandate from the people, saying his government is adrift and he has squandered the goodwill of the nation and also accusing him of orchestrating daily personal attacks and that there is a pitiful low level which is government, she says, has descended to and obviously we will try to get the reaction from downing street to her comments sparked she is not someone who backed rishi sunak at the first attempt to become a leader of the party never mind a second successful attempt to lead the conservatives and it is well known that she was displeased about not receiving a peerage, saying her reason for staying on after initially announcing her resignation and not following through was because she wanted to find out the reasons why she had not been elevated to the house of lords. i'm not sure she has yet been given the reasons but it is certainly a case she suspects that the current administration had something to do with it despite their denials. it is unsurprising that anything she does gets a huge amount of coverage and she certainly knows how to coin a memorable phrase. knows how to coin a memorable hrase. , , ., knows how to coin a memorable hrase., , ., , i. phrase. just to bring you the breakin: phrase. just to bring you the breaking news _ phrase. just to bring you the breaking news again -
