football—related activities came after he refused to resign after being accused of forcibly kissing a winner of the women's world cup on the lips. 0ur correspondent in madrid, guy hedgecoe, sent this update. world football's governing body, fifa, has suspended luis rubiales, the president of the spanish football federation, from all football—related activity, national and international for 90 days. and that is pending some disciplinary proceedings that fifa has brought against mr rubiales, which are related to his behaviour. at the end of the women's world cup final last week, when spain beat england in sydney, australia, at the end of that final, mr rubiales grabbed one of the spanish players, kissed her on the lips and he says that was a consensual act. jenni hermoso has since said that it was not, and this has created a huge backlash against mr rubiales government ministers. senior figures within the sporting world and other public figures have all come out criticising mr rubiales. in many cases calling on him to step down. however, he has refused to do that. he says that the kiss was consensual. he did nothing wrong and he has promised that he intends to stay on as federation president. however, there is pressure on him from the players themselves in the national team. they have said that they will not represent their country until mr rubiales is removed from office. and this latest suspension by fifa, of course, just puts more pressure on the federation president and makes this more of an international incident for spain, more of a worry on an international level. some in spanish media have compared this to spanish football's metoo movement. i asked sophia de roa, an activist with 8m commission, an organisation that brings together feminist movements in madrid, whether she believed that was the case. i think this is going beyond the metoo movement. it is a consequence of metoo, because what is happening is not only about women, it is as well about men because it is the whole society who is pointing to luis rubiales, pointing to this inappropriate behaviour, and that is because feminists in spain is a tool which is transforming the society, now thanks to the feminists, we are a better society, and we have demonstrated that as a society. what do you think should happen next? well, a lot of things have to happen because we need a lot of measures. this is notjust about a resign, this is about the whole structure, the whole industry of football in spain, and how this industry is affecting women. because women in football in spain has been doing a lot of years fighting, protesting, because they want the same work conditions, the same resources and the same opportunities to play football in equal conditions as men do. this is not happening yet, and this is because this sexist structure which involves the football organisation in spain. so in your eyes it is a sexist structure. what has to change? a lot of things, but first of all, the federation has to listen carefully to the football players, they have to listen what they are saying about the organisation of the federation, and this is the first step to start to change a lot of things in football in spain. and do you think it reflects any wider problems outside football? well, yes. it is a good example of what is happening to a woman in a regular basis at office, universities, at the media, the sexual violence and abuses of power that we're suffering just for being a woman. but the woman in spain and as well in other countries around the world are saying that's enough. we are not going to be in silence, and here in spain the whole society are supporting us to stop sexist behaviour. and to destroy the patriarchy system that doesn't allow women to live in the same way the men does. around 2,000 items are thought to have been stolen from the british museum, but some of the missing treasures have started to be recovered. that's according to the museum's chairman. the organisation is one of the uk's most prestigious cultural institutions, but revealed earlier this month that a number of treasures were reported missing, stolen or damaged. a member of museum staff suspected of involvement has been sacked. and hartwig fischer, the museum director, is stepping down after saying a 2021 investigation was mishandled. former chancellor, george osborne, is now chair of trustees at the british museum and has been speaking to radio 4's today programme. on behalf of the british museum, i want to apologise for what has happened. we believe we have been the victim of thefts over a long period of time and frankly, more could have been done to prevent them, but i promise you this. it is a mess that we are going to clear up and i can tell you today that we have already started to recover some of the stolen items and we are going to deliver the stronger leadership that the public and the dedicated staff of the museum deserve and make sure that we emerge with a stronger british museum that is fit for the 21st century. there's disruption to rail services across much of england today, as members of the rmt union take part in their latest strike over pay and conditions. there's a reduced timetable in place for much of the country, with some journeys into scotland and wales also affected. it's on the same day as events including the notting hill carnival and reading and leeds festivals. it's the 24th strike since last summer. four young people who died in a crash in county tipperary while on the way to exam results celebrations on friday have been named. 24—year—old luke mcsweeney, his 18—year—old sister grace mcsweeney, and 18—year—olds zoey coffey and nicole murphy died in clonmel after the car they were travelling in struck a wall. it's understood they had been on their way to celebrate after the three teenagers received their leaving certificate exam results earlier that day. ireland's premier leo varadkar said the nation is mourning their deaths. authorities in hawaii have published the names of almost 400 people who've been missing since wildfires swept the island of maui earlier this month. they're calling for any survivors on the list to come forward so the number of people unaccounted for can be reduced. teams are still searching the charred remains of the historic town of lahaina and other areas. 115 people are known to have died. monday marks 60 years since 250,000 people gathered on the national mall in washington, dc, and heard reverend dr martin luther kinng seliver his celebrated "i have a dream" speech on the steps of the lincoln memorial. today — king's family, civil rights leaders and members of the public are gathering to mark the anniversary, which was the largest demonstration for human rights in us history and a display of unity among five of the nation's largest civil rights organisations. let's speak to dr shabna begum, co—ceo of the runnymede trust. thank you for coming on the programme. 60 years on, what do you think the relevance is of that speech today?— think the relevance is of that speech today? think the relevance is of that seech speech and the wider movement it was symbolic i speech today? that speech and the l wider movement it was symbolic and part of is hugely significant, both for american history, but also for british history. the speech itself was part of wider civil rights movements campaigning for the end to segregation, as well as as the economic kind of rights that black people in america were denied at the time. the speech, as we know, we hear the last five minutes about, but it is a 70 minute long speech, and the start of it is a challenging indictment of the american system. the system it could sizes are not only the civil rights, which did go only the civil rights, which did go on to be the legislation created in the years afterwards, but it also talks about the economicjustice experience and that today in america still hasn't been resolved. in terms of voter support and for britain, it was inspiring a lot of civil rights movements, and britain had its own history and geography is. if we think of the night and 60s and the speech, britain was still an imperial power, facing challenges from colonies in the caribbean and africa. we had our own civil rights movement developing within the domestic context and inspired both by the american civil rights movement and there is a wider independence movements. sorry, 'ust to “um in, independence movements. sorry, 'ust tojump in. because i speech before the thymus five minutes. that is not what is concentrated on as much —— famous five minutes. what was it about the speech or the timing or that a moment that allowed it to become this huge, huge moment in history? i think the moment it has become, it isn't what it was at the time. there was hostility at the time, so the way we now celebrated, that wasn't the opinion or the consensus at the time. there was a lot of tension and efforts to have the march completely banned. it wasn't celebrated at the time, popular opinion was against it. it is only with the passage of time and the victory, the kind of security of those sober right that were one that we come to celebrated. the words, delivery, martin luther king himself, the power of the occasion has only really been fully realised in the decades afterwards. absolutely fascinating. i am sorry, i wish we had longer. absolutely fascinating for that fresh perspective on the words we know very well. thank you for him, saying he will legally defend himself, and he fully trust fifa and reiterates he has given the opportunity to begin his defence so the truth prevails. more later, this is bbc news. hello there. it's feeling a bit cooler than it has done of late, certainly across southern areas. and with low pressure nearby, the rest of this weekend will certainly be one of sunshine and showers. we've had some pretty heavy and thundery showers already across more northern parts of the uk. looks like through today i think some of the heaviest of the showers will tend to be across more central and eastern parts of the country. and more of a breeze down western areas of western scotland, northern ireland, through the irish sea, down into wales and south west england. slightly lighter winds further east. so these showers which develop across england, well, certainly towards the east, will be heavy thundery and slow moving as well. temperature—wise, it will feel on the cool side. pleasant enough in the sunshine, but when those showers turn up, it will feel quite fresh at times. temperatures, high teens, low 20s. and we'll continue to see sunshine and showers both at the reading and leeds festival during the course of the afternoon and into tomorrow as well. now, most of the very heavy showers fade away through tonight. there will continue to be a few showers dotted across northern and western areas with lengthy, clear skies. clouds will thicken up, though, across northern ireland ahead of this weather front. and temperature—wise, around 8—10 degrees, i think, for most of us. sunday starts off nice and bright, plenty of sunshine in central and eastern areas. but it won't be long till the showers get going again. this weakening weather front will push into northern ireland, bringing more persistent light and patchy rain here, eventually crossing the irish sea to reach western britain — but very much as a weaker feature. so most of the country, again, sunshine and showers. temperatures range from the high teens to the low 20s. of course, it's the notting hill carnival as well during sunday and into monday. so, sunday, caterfor the chance of some showers. i think drier, though, for monday. and the reason for it — a little bit dry on monday — is this brief ridge of high pressure trying to build in. that's what squeezes out that weather front. so we could see one or two showers across eastern england with that weather front as it fades away. otherwise, for monday — and it's a bank holiday for many — it should be largely dry for england and wales. plenty of sunshine around. a bit more cloud for scotland and northern ireland. but even here there will be some brighter, sunnier moments at times. and we could be up to 21 or 22 degrees in the south east, given more sunshine and light winds. the rest of the week looks fairly unsettled. most of the showers will be in northern areas, but it could turn a bit wetter for england and wales towards the end of the new week. this is bbc news. the headlines... luis rubiales has said he'll defend himself after fifa provisionally suspended him as president of spain's football association. his suspension from all football—related activities came after he refused to resign after being accused of forcibly kissing a winner of the women's world cup on the lips. investigations into thefts at the british museum continue — as the institution says some of the 2,000 items believed to be stolen have started to be recovered. a staff member at the museum suspected of involvement has been sacked. rail passengers across england are experiencing disruption today, as 20,000 staff have walked out over pay and working conditions. workers from ia train operators are taking part in the strike. now on bbc
