hello and welcome to the programme. kenya's faith kipyegon produced a devastating turn of pace to win the women's 1500 metres at the world athletics championships in budapest. the double olympic champion, who previously won world golds in 2017 and last year in eugene, led from gun to tape. she kicked at the bell for the final lap to outstrip a loaded field to take victory ahead of ethiopian diribe weltayjee in second with dutch runner sifan hassan back in third. team gb's laura muir finished back in sixth. i was expecting to defend my title, and i've done so and i am really, really grateful and thank god for this. i was well prepared, knowing that the defending champion is me and yeah, i was really working hard for it. morocco*s olympic champion soufiane el bakkali left ethiopia's world record holder lamecha gearma trailing as he went on to win the 3000 metres steeplechase. 22—year—old gearma had to settle for a third consecutive silver after losing contact at the final waterjump. steven gardiner of the bahamas pulled up injured in his 400 metressemi—final. gardiner, fastest in the world this year, was well—placed coming off the final bend but stopped, grimacing in pain clutching the back of his leg. former olympic and world champion wayde van niekerk who's also world record holder was the chief beneficiary as he advanced as a fastest loser. italy's olympic champion gianmarco tamberi won the world high jump title in a dramatic finish against young american juvaughn harrison. tamberi who shared the olympic title with three—time world champion mutaz barshim of qatar, cleared a world—leading 2.36 metres for gold. laulauga tausaga pulled off a surprise win in the women's discus final. the 25—year—old won with an effort of 69.49m, improving her personal best by more than four metres, with valerie allman taking silver, defending champion feng bin of china has to settle for the bronze. meanwhile soaring temperatures in budapest have pushed back the women's five thousand metres heats from wednesday morning to wednesday evening. the temperature in in the hungarian capital is expected to reach 32 degrees. world athletics have been highlighting issues faced by pacific island nations in relation to rising sea levels due to climate change. here's simone fe*ao who's president of athletics cook islands. i think there's enough influence now to say that they can't ignore it any longer, and they need to look at ways to change the habits of, you know, notjust our grass roots, but at our elite level of sport to make it more sustainable going forward. 0therwise, you're going to have some of our pacific nations aren't going to be able to participate in sports much longer. so you can see climate change actually having an effect on your ability to participate?. yeah, i mean, already i mean, not so much for the islands, but some of my pacific friends, they they can't have tracks because there's just not enough land above the sea level that they can maintain a track that the athletes can train on. you know, so that's probably unheard of for some european countries that are landlocked and have that kind of security. but that's the reality for a lot of our nations. rangers were held to a 2—2 draw at home by psv eindhoven in the opening leg of their champions league qualification tie. despite being ahead twice a luuk dejong goal with ten minutes remaining proved enough for the dutch side to return home feeling they have the upper hand ahead of next week's second leg in the netherlands. elsewhere, there were two other matches taking place with copenhagen taking a one goal advantage back to denmark next week, while royal antwerp will also take a slender lead to greece when they play aek athens. 0wen farrell has been handed a four match ban and will miss the opening two games for england at the rugby world cup in france starting next month. world rugby had appealed a decision that saw the red card farrell was given against wales earlier in the month downgraded to a yellow on appeal. it means the 31—year—old will miss this week's match against fiji and the opening two games of the world cup against argentina and japan, after last week's match against ireland in which he was voluntarily stood down also counted. john fairclugh of progressive rugby says he hopes sanctions like this help to change how players tackle. we want people not to tackle the way that 0wen farrell did so that they don't get harmed. coaches want their players on the pitch. if they are aware that these sanctions will actually stop them being on the pitch, they will change their tackling technique. clearly, there's something amiss here because we're still seeing the number of impacts that we actually see we've seen over the last few seasons. pga tour commissioner jay monahan has defended the decision to join forces with saudi arabia's public investment fund to bring golf*s tours together. monahan, who stepped down from his role for a month due to anxiety shortly after the proposed deal was announced injune, said he was back to full health and happy they had found a way for golf to move forward. i feel as strong as i've felt in a long, long time, and ifeel inspired and ready to go from the position we're in ultimately to generate a really positive outcome for the pga tour. this is a very complex situation, and if you're a player, director or you're a member of the pack, this is more complex than any other period of time. and i feel like we've listened, we've responded, and now we have the right people, the right process in place for us to be able to move forward and determine that future. europe captain suzann pettersen has named madelene sagstrom, gemma dryburgh, caroline hedwall and emily pedersen as her four wild cards for next month'ssolheim cup in spain. 0ur golf correspondent iain carter has more. well, gemma dryburgh will be making her debut at the age of 30. she's a proven winner on the lpga tour. she's ranked inside the world's top 50. and no surprise that she would get one of the four captain's wild card picks. the norwegian captain has gone scandinavian with the other three selections madeleine sandstrom, another strong player from the ladies european tour and the lpga. she is playing her third solheim cup, as is emily kristine pedersen. no surprise that she's been called up. and although caroline heswall is ranked 120 in the world, she's been pretty consistent on the tour this year and her captain describes her as the bulldog. she will bring a kind of spirit that will be needed by europe when they seek to win this solheim cup for a record third time in a row. a tyneside club has been invited to take part in an exhibition tournament on the pitch at twickenham ahead of england's world cup warm—up game against fiji on saturday. for at least two members of this over—50s club, the day will bring back some stirring memories — as mark tulip reports. the twickenham changing rooms in 1977, as gosforth, one of the powerhouses of english club rugby, celebrated a second successive john player cup triumph. it's another good turnout today. a year earlier, replacement prop forward phil levinsohn came off the bench in the first of those victories. today, he and former team mate stuart lewis on the losing side in 1981 are at blaydon rugby club, where the over fifties blaydon races walking rugby is based. the pace is a little more sedate these days, but members enjoy training up to two mornings a week, whether they're rugby novices or cup finalists. fortunate to play in one of the john player cup finals in the 76, replacing the mighty colin white. and it's been a very enjoyable part of my life. we're not back 50 years. it's you know, this is a different thing and you have a sense of perspective. it's not as competitive. your aim is to enjoy it, isn't it? and that's it. they're a good mix of people. we're from probably seven or eight different clubs in the region. there's people who have turned up just to have a look who never played before and just come in and embrace the whole scenario. with not many walking rugby clubs in the area. some members travel from far and wide, still working, as this ex netball playing farmer from near rothbury in northumberland, who's made a round trip of more than 75 miles. everyone was so welcoming. i didn't feel that i was letting everyone down and you know, everyone drops the ball on occasion. and ijust loved playing a team sport again. i'd forgotten how much i love playing team sports, which i haven't done for decades. the four—year—old club has grown steadily since being set up to promote fitness and mental wellbeing of the older generation with help currently from the sport works social enterprise. but it's that invite from the rfu that everyone*s talking about. one of the five clubs that's been invited to go down to twickenham on saturday, and we're going to play in a festival of rugby 12:15 to 1:15 before england versus fiji. they've also asked us to be flag waving people and gods of honour. so instead of young kids going out, there'll be a bunch of old fogies going out. but yes, great honour for everybody. everybody*s looking forward to it. mark tulip, bbc news. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. some of us have seen some warm late summer sunshine over the past few days, particularly across parts of southern and eastern england. and that theme is going to continue, at least for the next day or so. now, this is how we ended the day on tuesday. there have been some really beautiful sunsets. this was the picture in guernsey. and as we head through the day on wednesday, a bit more of the same. so, yes, some warm sunshine around, but also a few showers, particularly across some northern and western parts. now we'll start the day a little bit fresher than recent morning. so looking at mid single figures for some parts of rural scotland, but still in the mid—teens further south, still relatively warm and humid here. there'll be some low cloud moving in across parts of wales, perhaps through the bristol channel. a few splashes of light rain across this region, this is a weak front here, and also a few showers moving into parts of western scotland, perhaps one or two for northern ireland through the course of the morning. some sunny spells for eastern scotland, but later in the day, one or two showers cropping up here. but long spells of blue sky and sunshine for southern england and east anglia, where temperatures again could reach 25—26 degrees. but typically the high teens further north. now through wednesday evening, then, we'll start to see a few more showers working in from the north and the west. the breeze picking up, too, with those heavy showers, particularly across parts of scotland. they'll merge into longer spells of rain into thursday morning for parts of northern england, perhaps north wales as well. to the south of that, still quite warm and muggy. the temperatures remaining in double figures fairly widely on into thursday morning. now, thursday's weather still a bit of uncertainty, but we are dominated by low pressure that's moving its way into a couple of weather fronts here on the chart. this one's going to bring some showery rain into parts of northern ireland, particularly into scotland, though, could be quite heavy and thundery. and further south also the chance of some heavy showers and perhaps some thunderstorms for central, southern and eastern parts of england as well. in between, i think a bit of dry weather with some sunshine for the likes of northern ireland, northern england as well. so temperatures, again, at the high teens in the north. the mid 20s, though, quite a contrast, further south across the uk. and then as we head towards the end of the week into the weekend, low pressure looks like it clears towards the east, high pressure in the atlantic. that's going to open the doors for a bit more of a northerly or northwesterly flow of air. so from a colder direction. so still some sunshine in the forecast at times as we head through the course of the weekend. but equally, some scattered showers around, more frequent towards the north. and those temperatures return to more typical wildfires kill at least 18 people in greece. officials say they're likely migrants crossing from turkey. the first of donald trump's co—defendants surrender themselves to authorities in georgia. and seven students and teachers are recused from a dangling cable car in pakistan. we begin in greece, where 18 bodies have been found in a nationalforest where wildfires have been raging for days. they were found in the evros region of north—east greece, outside the village of avantas. initial reports suggest the victims are migrants, and an investigation is under way. 0ur senior international correspondent 0rla guerin
