The where a Rescue Operation Interior Minister says all people the Interior Minister says all eight people that were trapped on a broken cable car Stranded Hundreds of metres above a river bread have now been rescued. Ground forces have been rescued. Ground forces have been managing the operation using a zip line after the use of helicopters had to be called off after nightfall due to strong winds. These images show you the first rescue, how that unfolded, you can see the helicopter with a rope connected to it, a person is moved out of the cable car before being carried away dangling there from the helicopter, and there you can see a second child was rescued by zip wire, the child has been named locally as sammy, you can see him discerning the cable car in the dark, it must ve been so extraordinarily scary for all those children and adults, and he makes a safe dissent to the sound and is greeted warmly by the rescuers below. The group became stuck in the cable car when a line snapped. They were on their way to school. 0ur pakistan correspondent Caroline Davies has the latest. Doctors have been assessing the health of those rescued. They turned to the Zip Wire Rescues as night fell, they called off the rescue. Weve been hearing in the last ten minutes from the Interior Minister, some of them were stuck up there for more than 15 hours but they have now all been rescued. This is the tweet from the pakistan prime minister, saying. The local people got involved in the Zip Wire Rescues, getting the second child out and helping with the rest, so really great news for all those concerned. Lets hear now from Caroline Davies. Hanging over a perilous drop, was just a rope to safety. As an Army Helicopter hovers over the cable car, a leap, then swept away to safety, as the crowd cheers. This was the moment many hoped for, the first rescue after hours. Makeshift cable cars are common in the rural mountains of pakistan, taking minutes over ravines while roads take hours. Children were on their way to school when one cable snapped. At first, Army Helicopters could not rescue them, buffeted by winds, scared of the down wash from the blades could make the situation worse. 0n the ground, frustration. After the first rescue, saving the others inside became more complicated. As the light went, the helicopters left, and instead, locals and rescue officials used is a plane, pulling another child to safety. We can speak now to Caroline Davies joining us from islamabad, and this is the positive news of her own was hoping for, all of them have now been rescued . We hoping for, all of them have now been rescued . Hoping for, all of them have now been rescued . ~. ,. ,. , been rescued . We have now ust had confirmation been rescued . We have now ust had confirmation that h been rescued . We have now ust had confirmation that all h been rescued . We have now ust had confirmation that all these confirmation that all these individuals, six children and two adults, have now been brought safely back down. This is obviously running in quickly to tell you because we literally just in quickly to tell you because we literallyjust heard this news confirmed by the Interior Minister, then subsequently by people on the ground at the cable car site. We now know that those individuals are off the cable car, the vast majority of course were rescued by locals and Rescue Workers who were taking them from the cable car using a zip wire. Now initially wed seen one rescue that had taken place with an Army Helicopter that dropped a rope down and was able to take people out that way. One child was rescued that way but the remainder through the zip wire system. This was difficult to do with a helicopter, there is a major concern about the draught and winds carried by these helicopter blades, and it seems now that even though its late at night here, its gone 11pm here, but the final individuals are now out of the cable car and now safely back on firm ground. We understand they are being reunited with their family, we know many Family Members had been standing by waiting for news throughout the course of the day, pleading with officials to try to help their children. We understand there will now be medical checks, afterwards theyll see whether they need further treatment or whether theyre safe need further treatment or whether they re safe to need further treatment or whether theyre safe to go home. That we heard earlier that one of the children on board had a Heart Condition and was unconscious. It was extraordinary, we heard of people stuck in the cable car calling local radio stations. Do we know anything about the condition of that person . Hat know anything about the condition of that person . That person . Not as yet, we havent had confirmation that person . Not as yet, we havent had confirmation how that person . Not as yet, we havent had confirmation how that that person . Not as yet, we havent had confirmation how that person i that person . Not as yet, we havent. Had confirmation how that person has fared. We always heard this information that local reporters were able to get a hold of one of the man who was inside the cable car, he was able to speak on the phone until the battery appeared to die on his phone, and talked about the fact that there had been somebody who had passed out. We dont have any further information about whats happened to that individual yet but we know the individuals are out. This is the question that lots of people will be asking, whats happened after this long. Stuck in this cable car. This is somewhere here in pakistan, weve had. Its still a peak summer and they were essentially inside a Metal Chassis for many hours above, so we are waiting to hear how they fared medically, whether they are all safe and well and whether they can go home. So many questions raised about the safety of those cable cars, which are used so widely in those Mountain Ranges . Are used so widely in those Mountain Ranaes . ,. ,. ,. ,. , ranges . Throughout this wouldve normally taken, we understand if children had gone by road, it wouldve been a couple hours, whereas this cable car takes just couple minutes. Couple hours, whereas this cable car takesjust couple minutes. This is a rural area and a lot of these places in pakistan are homemade, not necessarily formalise cable cars are in action. We imagine therell be lots of questions after this about where the cable cars are operating and how they are checked, and who checks them. But for now, a moment of celebration all these individuals are out of the cable car. This of celebration all these individuals are out of the cable car. Are out of the cable car. So really, a story thats captivated so many peoples ideas, and also the fact that on board there were six children simply trying to get the schools and how difficult it is to make thatjourney to some of these rural parts of pakistan, that even just a Normal School commute could turn into something quite so dangerous and perilous. And of course, i think many will feel incredibly relieved that after all these incidences and seeing all these images of the cable car that left so precariously, concerns about the high wind, how long the cable would hold, some really good news this evening that all of those individuals are now safely off. Caroline davies, thanks so much for bringing us the latest on that, really great news out of pakistan that all eight people have now been rescued, thank you. Its emerged that the British Museum home to one of the worlds most important collections of cultural artefacts was warned more than two years ago that objects from its collection were being put up for sale. The bbc has seen an email exchange revealing that the museums directors said the matter had been thoroughly investigated and there was no evidence of theft. The museum is now admitting that a large number of objects have been stolen. Our Culture Editor Katie Razzall reports. The e mails appear damning, suggesting that first, the Deputy Director and then the director of the British Museum were alerted to allegations of theft more than two years ago. The Whistle Blower was a dealer based in denmark who bought items on ebay which he later discovered were British Museum property. He wrote tojonathan williams, the museum deputy, in february 2021, about a disturbing discovery i have made, involving theft from the British Museum. He followed it up injune, asking the director if an internal investigation had begun. A month later, a response came from the Deputy Director, saying that all the objects concern had been accounted for with no suggestion of wrongdoing and added that the collection is protected. In fact, we now believe that more than 1,500 objects were stolen, damaged, or missing, in a crisis currently becoming very damaging to the British Museum. This has already been reported across the globe in the media. British museum is probably the worlds most famous museum, so the Culture Department will be wanting to assure itself from the Board Of Trustees and George Osborne that it has the in place to protect these items now and the future, and to prevent anything like this from ever happening again. Just as damaging is what happened later. According to the e mail chain, the director sent his evidence to George Osborne, the chair of the British Museum, by another trustee in october 2022, saying he was certainly British Museum management have preferred to sweep the whole affair under the carpet. The next day, George Osborne e mailed the museum director, saying these are very serious allegations and asked for answers. That same day, he e mailed the trustee saying there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations. George osborne was told in january this year that was a demonstrable falsehood, and George Osborne replied saying he was taking the comments very seriously. Finally, Scotland Yard was called in to investigate, more than two years after the original allegations were first brought to the museum door, raising red flags for a former detective with the met s art squad. Clearly objects being sold into a global art market can change hands very quickly and many times over a relatively short period of time, say two or three years, that really adds a complexity which the police will not thank you for. I understand the British Museum is restricted from commenting on the details of what happened because of the police investigation, but these e mails pile more pressure on this uk institution. Katie razzall, bbc news. An independent review will be launched into the data breach of the Police Service of Northern Ireland two weeks ago. The leak saw the surnames and initials of 10,000 Police Employees excellently published in a freedom of information response. The review was announced by the police board following a meeting with the Chief Constable on tuesday. Any statement, mr byrne said he recognises the gravity of the situation and challenges ahead. A senior doctor who worked on the Neo Natal Unit where lucy letby was a nurse has called for Hospital Managers to be made more accountable for the decisions they make at hospital trusts. Dr Stephen Brearey first raised concerns about lucy letby in 2015. He said instead of acting on his warnings he and his colleagues lives were made very difficult. Its also emerged the nursing regulatorfor the uk is looking into claims against lucy letby s former boss, alison kelly. 0ur Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes reports. Managers in charge of the countess of Chester Hospital at the time lucy letby was murdering and attempting to murder babies in her care have some tough questions to answer. Doctors tried to raise the alarm over lucy letby but the lead consultant in the Neonatal Unit said bosses were more worried about reputational damage to the hospital. Dr Stephen Brearey said there was no accountability for nhs managers, a view shared by the british medical association. What is unacceptable is the lack of accountability in non clinical managers making decisions remote from patient care, affecting patient care adversely, and then when they leave one organisation, they seem to pop up at another one. So does this terrible case of lucy letby tell us something about the wider culture in the nhs . We have heard it described that some parts of the nhs, the culture is toxic, is that something you would agree with . There are certainly organisations and departments we have had it fed back that you would conclude nothing less than a toxic and hostile environment. Doctors and nurses have professional bodies that regulate their conduct. No such organisation exists for those managers who do not have a medical background, despite it being proposed numerous times following previous scandals. The doctor responsible for supporting Whistle Blowers in the Health Service in england says bosses have to listen to what their staff are telling her. It is absolutely is unacceptable that anyone is victimised or suffers a detriment for speaking up about some letters concerning them. It is a gift, and people need to consider that, as uncomfortable as it is, as what can i do with that information . Whistle blowers in the nhs have long complained that managers are too often unaccountable for their actions. That will surely be a central theme in the inquiry into the terrible events at the countess of Chester Hospital. Dominic hughes, bbc news. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Than 40 World Leaders have started arriving in than 40 World Leaders have started Arriving Injohannesburg for a meeting of the group known as brics brazil, russia, india, china, and south africa. These are pictures of chinas leader xijinping touching down. It is fifth visit to south africa since he became president 2013. The russian president , vladimir putin, will be attending by video link due to a threat of arrest for alleged war crimes. Lets speak to 0liver stuenkel, professor at Fundacao Getulio Vargas school of international relations, in sao paulo. Lets talk about the expansion allowing other member countries to become members, i think theres Something Like 20 countries which have applied already. What do you make of that, will it happen . Hello, will actually make of that, will it happen . Hello, will actually expansion make of that, will it happen . Hello, will actually expansion has make of that, will it happen . Hello, will actually expansion has been make of that, will it happen . Hello, will actually expansion has been on| will actually expansion has been on the agenda of brics from the very beginning. After all, china pushed towards including africa in 2010. And for five years, its been bringing this up because i think for china, its in chinas interest to expand the grouping because china is the leading power and all the brics members largely benefit from having closed access to xi jinping, to chinas finances and to the chinese market. And that concerns the other members who question whether countries like africa, egypt and indonesia, orargentina countries like africa, egypt and indonesia, or argentina who have all said they would like to join, they mostly want to be closer to china, and that would also make the grouping somewhat less exclusive and dilute the power of countries like brazil and india. The other issue that concerns some of the opponents of expansion is that its harder to control the final declarations, particularly brazil, south africa and india always sought to moderate the rhetoric of Brics Summits and not make anti western, because these countries also want to maintain productive ties to the west whereas china and russia are increasingly anti western. So i think there is tension there and itll be interesting to see how it plays out and what to accept, and what the criteria will be. Than what the criteria will be. An interesting what the criteria will be. An interesting aspect of whether it remains to be seen if its anti western. Most of the countries are interested in having more influence globally, how is it faring on that front . How will it challenge the influence of the g7 . I on that front . How will it challenge the influence of the g7 . The influence of the g7 . I think brics already the influence of the g7 . I think brics already has the influence of the g7 . I think brics already has some the influence of the g7 . I think. Brics already has some capacity the influence of the g7 . I think brics already has some capacity to set the agenda on issues regarding geopolitics, on issues regarding development, for example. But not necessarily adding new countries will make the grouping more influential, it could also paralyse the grouping. Theres a reason the g7 hasnt added other countries or why the g20 doesnt want to become the g 30 or g 40, because the Decision Making processes become more difficult. 0ver Decision Making processes become more difficult. Over the past decade, ive witnessed these discussions between the five member countries of brics because they often disagree. Years back india wanted to include a special reference to a Terrorist Group in afghanistan, but that was blocked by the chinese, the russians wanted to include anti western language, brazil didnt like that. Particularly in india and brazil, there is some concern that adding new countries will make a difficult to find any consensus. New countries will make a difficult to find any consensus. Thank you so much forjoining to find any consensus. Thank you so much forjoining us, to find any consensus. Thank you so much forjoining us, appreciate to find any consensus. Thank you so much forjoining us, appreciate your time, thank you very much. Time, thank you very much. Thank ou. Bringing you some pictures from pakistan, that Breaking News thats happened in the last hour or so that all eight people stuck on that Cable Car Hundreds of metres above a river have now been rescued. You can see all of them there, there were several children on board and theyve all been rescued by zip wire. 0ne theyve all been rescued by zip wire. One of the children was brought out first of all by a helicopter, winching the child out to safety and flying the child down to safety and flying the child down to the ground, and others, because night fell, they had to call off helicopter search so they started trying to get them out of the cable car using zip wires, and there we 90, car using zip wires, and there we go, more extraordinary images coming out of pakistan today where those people were stuck for many hours, some more than 15 hours up on a Cable Car Hundreds of metres above the river. New figures released by the National Records of scotland show 1,051 people died of drug misuse in 2022 thats 279 fewer deaths than the previous year. Its the first significant drop following several years of record high totals. The Glasgow City Council area had the highest rate of drug misuse deaths over a five year period, closely followed by dundee city. However, drug misuse remains a big issue in scotland. It continues to have the worst drug death rate in the uk and the rest of europe. Live now to edinurgh, to speak to fiona gilbertson. And thats a really huge question, we know that some drugs need to be regulated, but others need to be decriminalised. And we also need to remember that 90 of people who use drugs are not problematic, either to themselves or other people, but may not criminalised with a drug charge but if we think about and talk about the consequences of decriminalising people who are taking drugs, but would that look like . And it would look like young people not being strip searched by grown men, it would look like poor people in poor areas predominantly being targeted continually by police for drug use. People, especially women, too frightened to ask for any kind of help because they are considered criminal, and their children automatically being seen as at risk. A nonviolent drug charges forever, itll have you thrown out of work and education, itll make you unable to work in so many professions and push people further to the margins already. So a bit more of the same tomorrow, some sunshine around warm sunshine in the south, and a few showers mostly towards the north and the west, too. Now, here is the position of the jet stream at the moment its curling around in the atlantic and heading its way through central parts of the uk. To the north of thatjet stream, slightly cooler and more breezy conditions, whereas further south, weve got that warmer air affecting southern parts of the uk but certainly affecting much of central and southern europe, with that hot air drifting in from the south. We have got red alerts for those high temperatures, really from parts of portugal, spain, through southern france, northern italy, towards croatia, as well. So intense heat wave through the middle of the week, still ongoing for southern parts of europe. But closer to home, here is the satellite and the radar from a little bit earlier on you can see weve had some showers for Northern Ireland and scotland, blown in on this Briskjet Stream that weve got flowing across the uk at the moment. Further south, its mostly dry as we head through the evening hours, and actually, most of the showers will fade away tonight. But therell be a bit more low cloud working in through parts of the irish sea, wales, as well, a few splashes of light rain here, and a bit more cloud and a few showers for Northern Ireland and western scotland. But most of us, still mild, 13 14 celsius, a bit fresher across parts of central and Eastern Scotland under those clearer skies. So a fresh start to wednesday than we had on tuesday. Through the day, fair amount of dry weather with some sunshine, as well. There will be areas of cloud, particularly through parts of wales, northern england, the odd spot of rain, and a few showers further north, but not as many as weve seen of late. The warmest weather, again, will be for southern and eastern parts of england, 25 26 celsius. Typically, though, the high teens further north. Now heading into thursday, low pressure is sitting across the uk, so thatll bring a bit more of an unsettled picture. Not too many isobars on the chart, so not a particularly blustery sort of day, but therell be some showery rain pushing across parts of scotland, and we could well see some sharp showers further south across some central and southeastern parts of england, for instance, could be the odd rumble of thunder. But still warm in the southeast, 25 celsiusor so for thursday, but those temperatures starting to come down, so the high teens for most further north. Looking further ahead, there will still be some dry weather with some sunshine around, but a bit of a drop in those temperatures as we head through the bank holiday weekend. A few scattered showers on the cards, too. Bye for now
