they deserve it. we must keep pushing and giving visibility. translation: it's a double success. we managed to be world champions, but this is going to motivate a lot of young women to play football and other sports. it's wonderful. translation: i've been playing football since i was little. - i feel like i was them. i wish i was there to celebrate. it's so exciting. the only goal of the game came from the spanish captain olga carmona. she slotted the winner past goalkeeper mary earps in the first half. it means england's wait to win a first women's world cup title goes on. in london there were tears, hugs and disappointment for the lionesses, who were looking to become the first england senior side since the men's team in 1966 to win the world cup. in a statement, king charles said... "while i know how sore today's result must be, let none of you feel defeated, for to have reached the finals at all is an immense tribute to your skill, determination and team spirit in the finest sporting tradition." the tournament has broken attendance and tv records and raised hopes of a surge in interest for the women's game around the world. let's hear from the england let's hearfrom the england coach. of course, everyone was very disappointed that we did not win the game. on the other hand, i think we can be very proud of ourselves although it does not feel that way at this moment, that takes time because the disappointment is the most you feel. but everything we have done and how we have grown into the tournament, the challenges we had before and during the tournament and how we have adapted to situations, and we have given everything of what we could in this tournament and also in this game. well, the bbc*s shaimaa khalil was watching in sydney. spain's fans are still processing that momentous achievement by their team. i was looking at them as they watched la roja lift that world cup trophy, and you could see the emotions. some had tears in their eyes. a little boy told me, "i just actually cannot believe "that this has happened." this is a team that has been through so much turmoil off the pitch. so much disagreement between coach and players, and yet, they've come through and gotten better in that tournament, and here they are, world champions. new world champions, that is. their name, a new name is now etched on that world cup trophy. this fan zone has been the hub of so many emotions throughout the tournament. huge heartbreaks, achievements, triumphs and celebrations, nail—biting penalty shoot outs that we have lived through, upsets that nobody expected. often, the england fans were outnumbered here, but today, they actually had a strong presence. you could hear the cheers and the jeers for the lionesses. they leave here disappointed. this is not the night they wanted, and yet, they are very proud of their team. this is a tournament that has changed the game for women's sport, and for women's football. you can see kids now with jerseys of the players. they have now become household names. and the hope is that this will now gain momentum for more investment in women's football and women's sport. live now to the bbc*s sergi have not said anything yet and they say they are looking into it but they have not confirmed it and in 2010 when the men's football team won the world cup there was a parade so many here are expecting there has definitely _ as a whole in spain. there has definitely been _ as a whole in spain. there has definitely been more - as a whole in spain. there has definitely been more interestl as a whole in spain. there has - definitely been more interest than in previous world cup two and one of the reasons is because spain has been advancing to the next phases were as in the past they were always out of the competition very early. people who are mostly tuning in and there have not been big gatherings, there have not been big gatherings, the final has obviously been different, but until the final there were not big gatherings as we have seenin were not big gatherings as we have seen in england or in places in australia or new zealand. here people were mainly watching on tv at home and possibly with friends and family, but there were not large gatherings. one of the reasons is the weather, most of the matches were here in midday or at times of the date when it was really hot, so we have not seen that but there has been interest in the media have been talking about it, and the quest to hear that many have is, is this interest going to last? now that they are the world champions, is the coverage going to stay in the media? many hope this will be the case. sergi, thank you for bringing us that reaction. let's go live to sao paulo and eduardo is a spanish footballjournalist. thank you for joining us. what do you make of the spanish performance in the final? it has been a more self—assured performance than i expected and the team has been growing throughout the tournament and i believe that they have had their best performance in the first half of the final. they already knew that the left flank could make a difference and we saw that, they insisted for most of the first half in finding an opening and eventually it was the full—back who found the net finally. in the second half, the adjustment that sarina wiegman made to introduce kelly leaned into the way spain were working on the left flank and that even things out a lot and then with the penalty that was missed, the feeling was that things could be more towards the england side and fortunately, for spain, they were able to hold onto the lead and finished the match but it has been a self—assured performance and they have been gaining confidence as a tournament went on and i think that between players and coach, that situation has little by little and buy every match, has been left aside for the good of the team. you buy every match, has been left aside for the good of the team.— for the good of 2007 and 2011 world cups, you forjoining us. your reaction to the game? and the loss for england? disappointed for them, you could see in the tournament how much they adapted and how much they gave to make us proud and they did. being runners—up in world cup, we have never got to the final before, and we believed and hoped but today i think spain were deservedly the winners, just controlled the game, especially in the first half when they did the damage, and i agree we came back into it in the second half we made the changes, that formation change, but we just did not have enough and could not get the chances to put the pressure on spain in the game got patchy with all of the extra time at everything and delays, but i am so proud of the team. i know what it feels like to feel despondent after being knocked out, i played in the euro is final in 2009 and you dream big and once that settles and the disappointment of not getting the prize that you worked so hard for, in weeks to come the is on the team, even though they handled it brilliantly, in you want to achieve and use that, and they got so close and for the next, i remember it being almost a month, maybe even longer, but emptiness stays with you and that was not even when i go to the final! because that is the pinnacle, you dream of playing in a world cup and you have to shift your focus quickly but sometimes that can well, there is certainly a lot of concern over this vote. lots of ecuadorians i spoke to feeling nervous about going to cast their vote. but when we came here, there was an awful lot of security, police, military, checking our bags before we were allowed through. here in quito, it is not something people really thought of, in terms of security. of course, we saw with fernando villavicencio, the shooting of a candidate really shocked ecuadorians. even in a country that is used to, you know, growing cartel violence and growing organised crime, certainly, people coming to vote were very nervous. but as you can see, there is an awful lot of people who are turning out to vote. this is the first round, and they are not expected... a candidate is not expected to win outright, and there will be a second round expected in october. russia's luna—25 space craft has crashed into the moon after spinning into uncontrolled orbit. that's according to russia's space agency roscosmos. earlier be a world leader in space exploration, battling with the united states but is it fair to say that their space agency has dwindled amid a lack of funding, with some of that money being diverted to the all, space exploration is what superpowers do and vladimir putin very much sees russia as a global superpower. but you are right, the russian space industry has been in decline for many years. why? partly because of western sanctions, western sanctions make it more difficult for the russian space programme to get spare parts, like electronics, semiconductors, and make it more difficult to work with international partners. it is also because more and more resources now are being diverted away from the civilian space programme and towards the military and towards the war in ukraine. ., , ., . she was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six more. there are concerns that nhs bosses failed to respond adequately when questions about your conduct was raised. simonjones has this report. the smiling nurse who was a killer of babies she was supposed to be caring for. this is the moment lucy letby was arrested. the british medical association says her crimes have shocked the nation, and something similar must never be allowed to happen again. consultants at the countess of chester hospital say senior managers ignored their repeated warnings about letby for many months, despite hospital bosses claiming there was a culture of listening. it was secretive, it was judgemental. there was no credibility given to our opinions. and from january 2017, it was intimidating, bullying, to a certain extent. the consultants who raised concerns at one point even had to send letby an apology letter, against their wishes, for any stress and upset she may have experienced due to their comments. they also feared being reported to the general medical council when they continued to push for the police to be brought in. the gmc regulates doctors and has the power to strike them off. the british medical association is now calling for similar regulation for non—clinical hospital managers so they can face the same rigorous scrutiny as doctors. if there were a duty of care for hospital managers to apply the standards that some hospitals do very well in being open and transparent, but sadly, a lot of nhs managers ignore the problems brought to them. the former chief executive of the countess of chester trust, tony chambers, said... ..have any concerns that there was... the government says an inquiry examining the circumstances behind letby*s murders will also look at how concerns raised by clinicians were dealt with. simon jones, bbc news. in mexico, the north—western coast has been hit by high winds and heavy rains as herrick and hillary came ashore. has been flooding in the maja california region and some houses have been submerged. elsewhere, there have been landslides in the tropical storm is expected to cross into california later and forecasters warn it could dump a 25 centimetres of rain, one year's were, in southern california and nevada. there has already been heavy rainfall in las vegas. the repurchase might have been disappointing in terms of whether but the rain has had a great effect on english vineyards. a dryjune followed by a wetjuly make for perfect conditions for a bumper harvest of grapes. ellie crisell reports from west sussex. the english wine industry has grown and grown, with sussex home to the most vineyards. the grapes may be baking in sunshine today, but the last month has told a different story. can our unpredictable weather really sustain this industry? it's really getting from spring to harvest — that's the challenge. so this year's a perfect example of we had a great start to the year — so great spring, we had great fruit set — as you can see, we have lots of berries in the vineyard — but we just haven't had the sun in the last month or so. and this is our challenge. every yea r*s different, and when we think we're past one hurdle, there's something else that jumps out at us! for a crop that depends on consistently good weather, it certainly seems a gamble to grow in the uk, but for many estates, that gamble is paying off — with wine tourism big business. i think we're seeing england and the uk generally sort of follow that sort of trend that we've seen in napa, which is to have a really lovely cafe, shop, restaurant on site. we've seen tourists, local community come and visit us and drink great coffee as well as great wine down on site with us. i also think there's a little bit that, sort of post—covid, consumers wanting to drink, eat locally and feel part of a local community. this year, we're still optimistic. we've avoided a lot of the hurdles for producing grapes this year, so we've avoided the frost, we've avoided... we've had great fruit set. the vines look very healthy. but now we need sun — that's the bottom line. the uk's wine industry has only been able to bear fruit as global warming has increased temperatures. but along with that come extreme events and even less predictability — leaving winemakers anxiously watching the weather. you're watching bbc news. stay with us, plenty more online on the bbc news app. hello there. we had some lovely spells of sunshine through much of england and wales on sunday, a little more cloud at times through scotland and northern ireland with a few showers. and as we head through the course of sunday evening and sunday night, some clear skies with light winds through england. we'll see some low cloud, mist and fog developing through southern counties. more of a wind around parts of west wales, in towards the west of scotland, northern ireland. and, actually, that means temperatures here holding in the mid—teens. cooler elsewhere with light winds and clear skies. for the week ahead, we've got low pressure to the north—west, high pressure to the south—east, and that set up sticking with us for a few days. what it means is that, actually, through parts of scotland and northern ireland, cloudier skies with some showers or rain at times. the driest, warmest weather likely through central and south—east england, and then a cooling trend for all by thursday and certainly friday. first thing on monday, we've got that mist and low cloud lifting fairly smartly and then plenty of sunshine for england and wales. a few showers at times across parts of wales and the north of england. through scotland and northern ireland, sunny spells and a few showers. more of a breeze here as well from the south or south—west and heavier rain pushing in towards the highlands and islands. in the best of the sunshine, though, through parts of central, southern and eastern england, temperatures reaching the mid—20s. cooler elsewhere. this is tuesday now, and some heavy downpours across parts of the west and north—west of scotland, with low pressure once again towards the far north and north—west. elsewhere, some sunshine, and in the best of the sunshine through parts of central and south—east england, reaching 25 degrees once again, but cooler elsewhere. and certainly looking ahead towards midweek now, we still have low pressure to the north, high pressure to the south—east, but this feature here bringing some showery outbreaks of rain through parts of wales and into the midlands. if you're south of that line, still largely dry and fine, perhaps a few showers in towards east anglia. north of here, sunny spells and a number of showers, heaviest across parts of the west and north—west of scotland. temperatures again in the sunshine reaching the mid—20s, cooler and fresher elsewhere. more like mid to high teens, probably, at best. and for the end of the week, well, low pressure becoming the dominant feature across the uk, so staying unsettled across the north, drier in the south. but, actually, that warmer weather we've had being pushed back to the near continent. that's the forecast for now. this is bbc news. the headlines this hour. spain have won the women's football world cup, beating england 1-0, football world cup, beating england 1—0, in a
