it's toone! reports from sydney. wow! reports from sydney. having booked their place in the world cup final with a memorable victory over the co—hosts australia... it's russo! ..england's preparations have continued to go smoothly in sydney, a fully fit squad enjoying a final training session on the eve of the match. intent on surpassing the european crown they claimed last year. your players are about to play in the biggest game of their lives. when you look into their eyes, what do you see? i see calmness. we are well prepared. we are in a very good place, everyone is fit, the team is confident and we really want to play our best game. england into the world cup final. this is a tournament the lionesses have had to battle through, overcoming injury, the suspension of a star player... smash as they go through! ..and a penalty shoot out. but despite such adversity, the team has prevailed. i think everyone knows how big this is, i think it's been the players* dreams for years, so i think everybody already knows that and we know how passionate our nation is back home and how much they'd want us to win, but for us, as a process, we have a game plan to execute and like sarina said, we need to play the game of our lives. and so these are the players that stand between england and world cup glory. a little like the lionesses, spain's campaign began slowly. they were beaten 4—0 in the group stage byjapan but it's gathered pace, despite several stars being missing because of a player revolt. coachjorge vilde has been at the centre of the controversy, with some of his squad threatening to quit amid reports of concern over training methods and game preparation, but despite the unrest, spain still have plenty of talent and are the highest ranked team that england have faced here. translation: there will be | a tactical battle and it will be a competitive battle. we are going to fight with all of spain's weapons, it will not change and it is going to be the same that we have used for all of these years. it's going to be the match that everyone in the world has been waiting for. some people are on the pitch, . they think it's all over, it is now. 57 years have passed since an england team last competed in a senior final on the world stage, producing a performance of a lifetime. these lionesses will be aware of such glorious history but they are here to create their own. dan roan, bbc news, sydney. lots of celebrities and influential figures have been sending messages of support to the lionesses* before the big match. in a letter to the team, prime minister, rishi sunak, wished england boss, sarina wiegman, and her players good luck for the final, telling them: you ve made us all proud. labourleader sir keir starmer hailed the team as an inspiration to girls everywhere and last night the prince of wales also sent england his best wishes. lionesses, good luck for tomorrow. we are sorry we cannot be there in person but we are so proud of everything you have achieved and the millions you have inspired. go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves. there tomorrow and really en'oy yourselveefi there tomorrow and really en'oy ourselves. ., ,, , more than 7—million viewers watched england's 3—1semi—final win against australia — and many more are expected to tune in for today's final. our reporterjane dougall is inside stadium australia where the historic match will take place. jane, there's only a few hours to go — what's the atnosohere like there? hello. happy world cup day, everyone. it is finally here, england are in the final and we are inside stadium australia. let's show you around. first start with england's dugout. that's where sarina wiegman will sit, the rest of the coaching staff and subs. she will probablyjump up a couple of times and run out into the technical area. they have rebranded it all with the final up above and it is in purple and yellow so it will look different to the stadium england played out against australia. that was a really hostile environment. i don't think they are expecting it to be quite as bad this match but it will be tough. spain are no pushover, howeverwe will be tough. spain are no pushover, however we had from sarina wiegman and millie bright talking about england having to play their best game. also, millie bright said it's about wii and asked not i. because sarina wiegman has brought england together as a steam, a squad and their mentality is they are a band of sisters and that is one of the reasons they are here, that they have got to this point because they have got to this point because they have had to overcome overcome many obstacles. they had laurenjames sent off in that knockout game against nigeria and that meant she was banned for a couple of matches which of course meant she wasn't able to be selected. she is available for this match and that is the big question, whether sarina wiegman will pick her or not because she might want to stick with her winning formula and have ella toone in her place because she scored against australia, or will she bring back laurenjames? you had a bit from dan roan in there that spain have had problems in the lead up to this world cup. they have had a player revolt and a lot of negatives there because there is some bad feeling between the coach and players that is palpable. england might date that will be a positive for them but then, spain have scored 17 goals in this world cup, that is the most of any team in this tournament. so england will have that in the back of their minds, too, but look at how wonderful this stage is, ready to go for one of the biggest matches in all of the lionesses careers.— biggest matches in all of the lionesses careers. ., ~ , ., g ., the only thing standing in the way of the lionesses lifting the world cup trophy is the spanish team. our reporter sergi forcada is in madrid. sergi, how do the spanish fans feel ahead of the final? there is a sense of excitement and a feeling that this may be the moment for the spanish national team to shine after years of very weak performances in international competitions like the world cup or the euros. as you can see it is very quiet here, not many around but we are expecting around 6000 fans to get together to watch the final later. plenty of watching parties across the country, also lots of people expected here in one of the main squares in madrid with people hoping spain will make it happen, that they will be able to beat england. this is a team that combines very experienced players with some newcomers that have impressed that some of their best players are missing from the squad and this is after internal turmoil, the relationship between some of the players and the coach has been far from perfect. if you want to go at some of them made themselves unavailable for this competition. they want to change in the team and get rid of the coach but back then, the spanish football federation back to the manager. some of the players on one side and the manager not being involved in celebrations. the manager has said what matters is what happens on the field and to be fair, spain have never reached a final before, same as england, so they have made history. if we look at the statistics up until now, spain have only won one single match in previous world cups, now they are 90 minutes away from making history and bringing the trophy home. thank ou. a and bringing the trophy home. thank yom a sleepy — and bringing the trophy home. thank you. a sleepy madrid _ and bringing the trophy home. thank you. a sleepy madrid at _ and bringing the trophy home. thank you. a sleepy madrid at the - and bringing the trophy home. thank you. a sleepy madrid at the moment. lots more coverage throughout but some of the other news today. the british medical association is calling for hospital managers to be regulated in a similar way to medical staff — following the case of the serial—killer nurse lucy letby. she was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six more. there are concerns that nhs bosses failed to respond adequately when questions about letby*s conduct were raised. simonjones reports. the smiling nurse who was a killer of babies she was supposed to be caring for. this is the moment lucy letby was arrested. the british medical association says her crimes have shocked the nation, and something similar must never be allowed to happen again. consultants at the countess of chester hospital say senior managers ignored their repeated warnings about letby for many months, despite hospital bosses claiming there was a culture of listening. it was secretive, it was judgemental. there was no credibility given to our opinions. and from january 2017, it was intimidating. bullying, to a certain extent. the consultants who raised concerns at one point even had to send letby an apology letter, against their wishes, for any stress and upset she may have experienced due to their comments. they also feared being reported to the general medical council when they continued to push for the police to be brought in. the gmc cancel all non—essential travel to the region. at this time, we are strongly recommending that people with plans to travel to fire—affected areas throughout the central interior and south east in the was *peoples ford boghall and bathgate caledonia* who took home the title. it*s the band*s first world championship win in their 52—year history and they faced tough competition from austria, australia, canada and the usa. i*m sure it sounded louder if you were there. we get a sense of what it sounds like. from one world championship there is another, the world cup final. the sun looking glorious from what we could see earlier with jane in sydney. looks like it is being reflected in that picture you have got there. indeed. good morning. this is the daytime photograph. it will be evening when the gales kicked off but it should be largely fine and dry. pleasant, good conditions with generally light to moderate winds. temperatures around 17 degrees. pretty decent for the time of year. the weather looking good there in sydney. how is it looking back home? not too bad for today. england and wales 20 of sunshine throughout the day. a few showers across the north and west, winds later foremost, closer to this area of high pressure. low pressure though threatening to bring more in the way of showers to northern ireland and scotland. certainly for western scotland. certainly for western scotland. we will maintain this divide through today and the next few days. a bit of mist and fog through the morning then plenty of sunshine around. one or two showers rattling in from the west, most places should stay dry although most of the showers should be across scotland and northern ireland. 25, 20 6 degrees across the south and east, feeling pleasantly warm and winds light. before monday, we have this area of low pressure edging closer into the north—west, slightly stronger winds here and although we will start with sunshine and showers, we could see longer spells of rain pushing into northern ireland and scotland. for england and wales, more of a breeze, central and wales, more of a breeze, central and southern eastern england staying fine and dry. up to 26,20 7 degrees in the warmest spots in the south—east. again it is the mid—teens to around 20, 21 celsius further north. tuesday again a lot of fine weather through central and eastern areas. more showers for the north and west, we could see this feature later in the day which could bring persistent rain. 25 degrees or so in the south—east, less so in the north. things change from wednesday onwards. we see this front move in across the south and then low pressure sets in across the country bringing scattered showers towards the end of the week with also north—westerly winds. you can see the orange red colours ebbing away to the near continent as we import cooler, fresher conditions for friday and as we head into next week. we will be going downhill throughout the week but pleasant for england and wales up until the middle part of next week and then from friday into the weekend, cooler more showery weather wishing in across the south, just in time for the bank holiday weekend but it doesn*t look like it will be a wash—out but they will be showers around. more details later. thank you. it wouldn*t feel like a proper bank holiday without the risk of rain. we will not shoot the messenger. thank you. let*s have a look at today*s papers... "lioness we can" — that*s the headline in the sunday mirror, which reports that the team have said they must play "the game of their lives" to win in australia today. the mail on sunday calls for england to "roar to victory" against spain "by order of the king". the paper reports king charles has urged the team on and wished them luck. and the sunday people features an image of the team*s stars celebrating a goal in their semi—final win earlier this week. it reports that england*s captain millie bright has urged the team to "glory". we all known the importance of looking after ourselves and keeping fit — but would you know how to do so safely during pregnancy? experts say there*s a lack of guidance for mums—to—be, with two—thirds not receiving any advice on how and when to exercise. cardiff university is conducting research into how women*s bodies change during and post pregnancy and the bbc*s emma vardy has been looking into this for us, while on her ownjourney to becoming a new mum. at 38 weeks, lots of people have told me to put my feet up, but i*m keeping them on the treadmill. sport and exercise has always been a really big part of my life. so when i became pregnant, i knew i wanted to keep doing as much as i could, and it*s even given me added motivation. but i soon found there can be some conflicting attitudes and still a few myths out there about exercising in pregnancy. fitness instructor, cheryl, who*s also expecting runs pre and post—natal classes with babies. it*s a body pump style of class with weights. and she says contrary to some outdated attitudes for most women, there are many benefits to keeping up exercise through pregnancy at a pretty challenging level of intensity. once upon a time, women were told, ok, you can do a bit of gentle swimming or walking, but no gym. don*t lift any weights. yeah, nothing heavier than a kettle often. i think a lot of them are quite nervous and worried about doing the right thing, doing the wrong thing. what do you think people*s worst fears are? because i*ve heard people say you could harm your baby, you*ll cause a miscarriage. yeah, it definitely is. the worry of yeah, like you say, damaging harm, miscarriage was actually there*s no evidence that really supports that being caused directly through exercise get the right guidance throughout the different trimesters can carry on doing pretty much everything. and i*m interested to hear how other exercising mums approached it. i try to keep as active as possible and i play netball up until being about 12 weeks. i was quite surprised howl strong you can be actually during your whole pregnancy. i tapered it down a little bit - towards the end, but i kept going. it did make me feel really good. you only have to look at sport stars and celebrities. to see there*s now a growing culture for more ambitious exercise through pregnancy than once existed. serena williams won a grand slam when she was eight weeks when pregnancy may not be visible, but the body is going through massive changes. gemma atkinson shared her pregnancy weightlifting workouts on social media and fancy a hike up the hollywood hills? you*d be following in the footsteps of a pregnant eva longoria. so what about other activities? surfing is my first love, and while the advice is not to take up something new like this in pregnancy, the guidance i received was that if you did it before, you can keep going and found at seven months, i was still able to paddle out and catch waves here on the west coast of ireland, although i headed out when the conditions were a bit smaller than i would normally. researchers at cardiff university are looking at how women*s bodies change after pregnancy, focusing on runners particularly. they say there are many benefits to exercise before and after giving birth, if done correctly. but there is caution advised to treat symptoms like lower leg pain, stress fractures and urinary incontinence. they say more tailored advice would help. not knowing how to return is one of the biggest barriers. so the more that we can look into this, the more that we can provide evidence to inform guidelines and disseminate that to the health care professionals to get it to the women and serve this population. the more active we can have pregnant and postpartum women. but one thing pregnant women still encounter is the inevitably well—meaning but perhaps off—putting advice from friends, family and complete strangers. caris and zoe both ran throughout their pregnancies, and zoe completed the london marathon five months after giving birth. often people kind of tell you you*re crazy when they see you running with a huge bump or tell you to be careful or make sure you don*t fall over. obviously you were doing that anyway. you might go into labour early or give yourself pelvic floor injuries, especially in the third trimester and possibly for some people, that might be true because there is obviously a lot more weight on your pelvic floor, but my experience was as long as the is painful, it was fine. i*m not going to lie. as the months have gone on, i*ve definitely found running in particular quite a lot harder. but i*m inspired by all these other women and feel determined to keep going. now the finish line is well in sight. emma vardy, bbc news. later we will have a gp in the studio to give more advice on that. we have gavin with us looking ahead to a pretty big match later. women*s world cup final, what a match in store for england and spain. england have been getting have described this tournament as a tournament of surprises and upsets. many people didn*t expect it to turn out the way they were, even the lionesses started slow and kept getting better and better but i must say, the idea that in this tournament first, for the first time you have 32 teams, all four former world cup champions are out, eliminated and we will have a new champion, a fifth nation essentially lifting the trophy, is a huge highlight but also must say, all the underdogs in this game are what have been labelled underdogs, inexperienced teams, they have delivered some of the most beautiful football moments. 0ne delivered some of the most beautiful football moments. one of my highlight moments has been marked, the brazilian legend, she embraced the brazilian legend, she embraced the jamaican player when they knocked out brazil, and in her presser, she said, when i grow, i had no one idles, i had no women role models, but now people stop me and tell me, i want people i want my daughter to be like you. speaking to young girls and boys here in sydney who have been donning the matildas jersey, saying we want to be like them. actually speaking to a couple earlier on the beach who have come from lancashire and i asked one of them how long he had been a lionesses fan and he said, i don*t follow football, it was my wife got me into it, it was my wife brought us here. you canjust see how far the women*s game has come and how far it can go. just by following this tournament. shaimaa khalil in city for us. back in the premier league, no kane, no problem for tottenham, as ange postecoglou*s side beat manchester united 2—0. after a chaotic first half, it was pape sarr*s goal that broke the deadlock shortly after the break. spurs sealed all three points late on, when ivan perisic*s cross took a touch off ben davies, before being directed into his own goal by lisandro martinez. iam more i am more happy that we are showing bits of our game out there. want to play. or we can do is keep improving and hopefully we will pick up points along the way. things went much better for the team on the other side of manchester, as city ran out 1—0 winners over newcastle united. julian alvarez*s superb first—half goal was enough to see the champions past newcastle. the victory sees them two from two so far this season. it is the second game of the season. confirm where we came from. today we should train in the morning to prepare a little bit for the game. we spoke about the mentality and the reason why we want is our mentality and we proved it again. liverpool got their first win of the season, beating bournemouth 3—1 in a controversial game at anfield. liverpool fell behind early on, but a clever goalfrom luis diaz was quickly followed by this mo line that gave usa the gold, whilst britain picked up the silver. meanwhile, katarina johnson—thompson is also in a good position in the heptathlon. this strong run in the 200 metres saw herfinish in second place overnight after four events — that*s behind the leader, america*s anna hall. lots to look forward to later on, as well as the big football game, i*m sure you know which one! we have a slight idea! you have been dropping hints. we will speak to you later. plenty more to come late in the programme but right now it is time for the travel show. good girl, straight on. oh, i want you two to come so badly, but i don*t want you to be eaten by lions. a lion and a buffalo? yes, he wanted to hunt. music plays kenya has been at warfor decades. its enemy? the poachers who prey on its precious wildlife. impossible route in and impossible route out. 0l pejeta conservancy*s canine unit are just one of the many groups across africa taking up the fight against poaching. this illegal trade has threatened the very existence of animals like these. at the endangered species enclosure at 0l pejeta, will and i have been brought to meet mother and daughter, najin and fatu, the last surviving two northern white rhinos on earth. and here, it*s very soft, on their ears. here. who*s this? this is najin. hello, najin! hello, sweetheart. good girl. 0k, there you go. and then at the back here, it*s rough, you can touch at the back here. oh, yeah! at least you are able to lay your hands on what is the last of a being on the planet. it is sad and i hope it doesn*t happen again to another species. and why are they so rare, james? um, it*s basically poaching, which has just been driven by human greed and greed in different forms — greed for power, greed for their medicinal aspects. someone who has been made to believe, traditionally, that if they drink a rhino horn, it*s a cure for cancer. they can pay any amount to get a small piece of rhino horn. but that*s not true! 0n the black market, a kilo of rhino horn is now selling for something more than us$60,000. you can imagine a rhino, that is a lot of money and it*s a lot of business and that*s why still poaching becomes a serious problem. i kind of want to show you a footprint of a rhino. right here, we have one. it*s humbling to meet najin and fatu, but frustrating not be able to see them. althouthames is teaching me some age—old rhino tracking techniques that rely on other senses. but he told me to expect to get my hands dirty — very dirty. rhinos are very hygienic in nature. they drop their poop in a collective place, we call it a midden. it*s pretty fresh. much of rhinos* poop is semi—digested grass. it feels like soil back at home. yeah. i guess it*s fertiliser. 0h, now it is smelling a bit doggy. and so there are all rhinos dropping their poop together. oh, you*re... there is the smell! it doesn*t smell that bad. itjust smells of, like, off grass, you know? the reason why we value these middens is especially when you*re doing patrols as rangers, the rangers will use this as a parameter. yes. but lots of rhinos use it to communicate. they poop out different smells at different stages. a young one is different from a mature rhino, a female is different from a male. the canine unit who protect the animals here are made up of armed rangers and highly trained dogs. each of these brave pooches has a special ability, from picking up the scent of a poacher to detecting ammunition, and even attacking potential suspects so they can be detained. and their target today...is me. the canine unit raise funds for their work by allowing tourists to take part in their dogs* training. sarah*s going to smell my scent and go, "that*s her" and track my footsteps. ok, let*s go. we*re hiding now. 0k, we*re hiding — we*re hiding from sarah. this swab is like a scent magnet. yeah, hopefully she doesn*t see me and shejust... yeah, we*re testing her! sarah the dog can get everything she needs to know to find me from a quick sniff of a swab rubbed over my footprint. so scared! i don*t know was she*s gonna do when she finds me! i mean, she*s got her harness on and she*s in work mode, and i know more than anyone that a dog in work mode is so focused, just like my guide dog girl is. humans live in a world of sight, whereas man*s best friend lives in a world of smell and can follow the scent across the plains. they*re coming...gosh! good girl! there you go! you found me! well done! clever girl! you*re just so amazing! does she look happy with herself? she probably does! all in a day*s work, hey, honey? before i left 0l pejeta for the maasai mara, james and will wanted to introduce me to another type of rhino. meet baraka, the blind rhino. this is baraka. oh, i can hear him! in the local language, baraka means blessed. blessed. yes. 0h, he sounds sweet. is he eating his little leaves? black rhinos are nervous in temperament, which can make them really aggressive and hard to get close to on safari. but this one is an exception to the rule and happily lets visitors feed him. meet *baraka the blind*. he lost his right eye to a fight with another rhino. did he lose that first, the right eye? yeah, his right eye first. same as me, yeah. and then the left eye got a disease, cataracts, and the attempts to treat the cataracts were futile. ijust — i really... i really feel for him, you know, having to get around in this enclosure and learning his way about. and the same with the cataract — that must be so confusing for him when he was first going blind. was he... was he upset in any way, could you tell that he was upset? yeah, he was very upset. he was the age of one to 1a, he was roaming free out in the wild and i think him becoming blind at the age of 1a, he had to learn how to do things in that state. 0k, yeah. it was really hard, it was really hard. i know for us sometimes we have people to help us. we have dogs to help us in our movement and, you know, the caretakers had to step in, which was not easy because he was still aggressive. so he was very defensive in himself. so i*m really happy for what he*s made of himself and being able to still be here. yeah, it*s so hard. i just, yeah. . .i understand. i have a really rare genetic condition and i had a cataract too that eventually, in my last remaining eye, just like baraka, it kind of, like, made my vision go and eventually that got, you know, it detached my retina at the back. sorry. cries it's ok, it's ok. it*s completely fine. but, honestly, when you call baraka a blessing, it is a blessing. it is a blessing to be blind, because it means he*s meant to teach people a lesson. he*s meant to — he*s meant to be here to get people to understand that you shouldn*t be poaching these beautiful animals. i*m sorry. it*s hard. it*s taking an emotional toll on you, realising the journey that baraka has been through. james, is he happy? he is a happy rhino. i think the munching itself, you can tell. we are near the waterfalls. what can you see? i can see a camel, just close... a camel?! yeah, just a camel! laughs there*s a cameljust close to us. how many humps? 0ne hump — one hump, one hump, yes. and there*s a carjust close to you — there*s a toy carjust close to you. a toy car! so it*s a playground for children. thomson*s falls is a huge tourist attraction and there*s a viewing platform where you can check out the 7am—high waterfall. but that*s not going to cut it for me. what*s this — is this stairs? yes, these are stairs. lovely. are they uneven, will? yeah. 0h, 0k. um... i*m a bit afraid that i*m going to fall, so i*m just going to give you this tag for your arm. itjust helps me balance a lot more so i can use the cane and hold on to you then. instead, will and i are going to hike down to the bottom of the ravine... i*ll get you to hold onto it. ..so i can get to really experience the falls. normal amount, cool. then... yep. ..bring your leg there. there, yep. so, what you*re going to do first — we*ll pass through here, we can go slowly. this is the nastiest... the nastiest, yeah. ..of all of them. 0k. so let me hold you. yeah. wow! well done, will. well done. you*re welcome. thank you so much. you*re welcome. and you were using my cane, weren*t you? laughs it*s the toughest! it is! it*s the toughest thing i*ve ever done! the ability to just think negatively about my blindness, i used to think, oh, well, going to a different country is just a really expensive way of basically being in my back garden, and i didn*t appreciate what else you could get from an experience. all you keep having to tell yourself is, you know, i*m getting to the waterfall, i*m getting to the waterfall. and now i can feel it on my face, it*sjust the best thing ever — that i*ve ever experienced. so, the waterfall is about 7k metres going down. 0k. it is 70 feet deep. and i*m guessing at the bottom of the waterfall, it*s, like, really harsh, like, white water. yes, it has, like, foam. so this type of landscape, i didn*t think you will ever reach here. i*m very proud of you. thank you. so, lucy, are you ready to go to the migration in maasai mara? i am, i*m so ready. this is the classic africa of storybooks and the location of the great migration. betweenjune to september each year over 1.5 million wildebeest make the 300—mile round trip from the serengeti in tanzania to the maasai mara here in kenya in search of fresh grass. that*s if they can get past the lions, the hyenas and cheetahs laying in wait for them. they then have to tackle the steep—sided rivers that cross the migration route. most of these rivers are teaming with nile crocodiles that can grow up to 20 feet in length. the river crossings are pure natural theatre, and they*re what the 300,000 tourists who visit here each year come to experience. but the crossings are extremely rare to see, so let*s just hope i have some beginner*s luck. as will and i arrive at the gates of the maasai mara national reserve, i get to meet some entrepreneurial maasai women. lovely to meet you, linda. can you — can you tell me what you*re selling? i can*t see you. crosstalk this giraffe? it*s linda. hi, linda! so, basically... laughs i don*t know what to do! sorry... someone hit me in the head with the giraffe! ok, i need to take control of this. everyone take a step back. ok, here you go. thank you so much, i love them! linda! i don*t think i*ve ever been so overwhelmed in my whole entire life. i don*t know what these are. i don*t know what... i mean, they*re giraffes. once they found out i love giraffes, i got about 70 giraffes, but i wasn*t allowed to feel them. so, um... i will treasure these forever on my mantelpiece. gerald and lenny! the maasai are a kenyan tribe and famed across the country — so much so that their shield and spears can be seen on the nationalflag. traditionally, maasai life has been built around their cattle, but that way of life has come under threat in an ever—modernising world. but with more and more tourists coming to kenya for the great migration, the maasai are diversifying into tourism and opening some of their villages so visitors can experience their traditional way of life. 0oh, yeah! the women of the village have decided if i can*t see them with my eyes, then they will give me the chance to wear their traditional dress — which is great for me, as it*s really tactile. did you make this? yeah! traditional singing we like guests. even our father say, the guests, they are best. yeah? and they are blessed. yeah. and actually, they go to see the big five. they say they want to see the big six. you know, the maasai, they*re the big six. 0h, right! yeah, because... so, five animals and then you guys. and then us. the best time to go on a game drive is either last thing at night or first thing in the morning. will believes if we are to have any chance in catching a river crossing, we will have to be out in the vehicle before dawn. so tonight, we are staying at a place called sala*s camp, deep in the maasai mara on the banks of the sand river. animal noises oh, what is that?! but it*s very overwhelming. every little sound, i*m like, "what is that?" i can hear it. gasps animal noises that sounds so close! after finding out i was being kept awake half the night by a baboon and a leopard having an argument, it was time to head out to try and find an elusive river crossing. but it didn*t take long before i got a reminder ofjust how deadly this journey is for the wildebeest. what*s that noise? so, the noise is a kill. 0k. so, the noises that you hear... cracking. cracking, yeah. ..is the vultures trying to remove the meat off the bones. then they are eating the intestines. 0h, right! are these birds dangerous, will? it*s dangerous when you are dead. laughs this is feasting season for the predators. yeah. oh, i can hear the wildebeest to the left of me! for most of the year, the maasai mara is quiet and calm with bush wilderness that goes on for miles. but during the migration, it*s a totally different story. can you hear the sounds of the wildebeest? it*s everywhere, isn*t it? 3d sound! yes. something you can*t get anywhere else. it*s just beautiful. i love it and i*ve got my little figure here. do they look like this, will? yes, they look like this. so, first, their legs looks like hyena. they have very weak legs. yes. when god was creating the wildebeest, he was the last animal to be created. mm—hm. a wildebeest is made with different types of animals. so, on the top is like a horse. 0n the horns, they look like a cow horn. yes. then they have the beards, like a goat. they do? giggles. a beard like a goat! around you, how many wildebeests would you say there were? i think we have the herd is about 50,000 or maybe 100,000 just close to us. gasps as there*s so many wildebeest around the area our camp is in, this is a good sign that a crossing is about to happen. the ones who are moaning are the leaders, those are the leaders, they are the ones who are moaning because now, it*s early in the morning, it*s only the leaders who are communicating where to go to. but following a herd of wildebeest is not easy. until will spots some shadowy figures at the edge of the river. so, the leader has just called for them to cross. yes. and now, they*re making noise. they*re communicating, saying, there is nothing. there*s no crocs or there are no hippos around. this is a case of right place and right time for both us and the wildebeest. can you hear them in the water? yeah, i can! and, yes, thousands and thousands crossing right now. maybe the lions and crocs were already full because this time, it seems that the herd reached the other side of the river and fresh grass unscathed. i may have taken the long way round on this safari, tuning each of my senses into a world so different from my own, but now, i*m getting to experience one of nature*s marvels — something i*d never thought i*d be doing when i first lost my eyesight. so, this is the eighth wonder of the world. later that evening, i wanted to end my safari in the traditional way — with a sundowner, where you enjoy a drink watching the sunset against the beautiful african sky. not a very blind—friendly experience, let*s face it! but then, kenya had other plans. thunder rumbles would you like a drink? both laugh. can i have a g&t, please, will? yes! so, enjoy! it knew that i wanted rain because i can*t see the sun. and all the animals are happy! yeah! all the animals are happy, and so is this blind girl! yeah! cheers! this is my blind girl sundown! this has been one of the most amazing things i have ever done, and now i can well and truly say this is how a blind girl goes on safari. thunder rumbles good morning, welcome to breakfast with ben boulos and luxme gopal. 0ur headlines today... with just four hours to go — can the lionesses become the first senior england team since 1966 to win a world cup? the to win a world victory over the co—hosts australia... it*s russo! ..england*s preparations have continued to go smoothly in sydney, a fully fit squad enjoying a final training session on the eve of the match. intent on surpassing the european crown they claimed last year. your players are about to play in the biggest game of their lives. when you look into their eyes, what do you see? i see calmness. we are well prepared. we are in a very good place, everyone is fit, the team is confident and we really want to play our best game. england into the world cup final. this is a tournament the lionesses have had to battle through, overcoming injury, the suspension of a star player... smash as they go through! ..and a penalty shoot out. but despite such adversity, the team has prevailed. i think everyone knows how big this is, i think it*s been the players* dreams for years, so i think everybody already knows that and we know how passionate our nation is back home and how much they*d want us to win, but for us, as a process, we have a game plan to execute and like sarina said, we need to play the game of our lives. and so these are the players that stand between england and world cup glory. a little like the lionesses, spain*s campaign began slowly. they were beaten 4—0 in the group stage byjapan but it*s gathered pace, despite several stars being missing because of a player revolt. coachjorge vilde has been at the centre of the controversy, with some of his squad threatening to quit amid reports of concern over training methods and game preparation, but despite the unrest, spain still have plenty of talent and are the highest ranked team that england have faced here. translation: there will be | a tactical battle and it will be a competitive battle. we are going to fight with all of spain*s weapons, it will not change and it is going to be the same that we have used for all of these years. it*s going to be the match that everyone in the world has been waiting for. some people are on the pitch, . they think it's all over, it is now. 57 years have passed since an england team last competed in a senior final on the world stage, producing a performance of a lifetime. these lionesses will be aware of such glorious history but they are here to create their own. dan roan, bbc news, sydney. more than 7—million viewers watched england*s 3—1semi—final going on behind you? exactly. they have started rehearsals for the ceremony to begin before this final match of this amazing tournament. you can see behind me they are starting to get the flags ready, they are doing that to music. and they are also going to be practising the national anthems. we had this before, it is spine tingling on its own but when this crowd of 75,000 plus sing along with it, it raises the roof and its phenomenal. there will be a new winner of this women*s world cup and the 75,000 people will watch a new team lift that trophy. and of course england will be hoping it is them. it will be the combination of so much hard work and so many obstacles england have had to overcome, keira walsh getting injured, laurenjames being sent off in the nigeria game. we don*t know whether sarina wiegman will pick her or not in her starting line—up, she is available again, she will be desperate to play but sarina wiegman might stick to a winning formula. it*s worth remembering that england women were not able to play football, they were banned for 50 years, just see how far they have come. they are in the final of a world cup. come. they are in the final of a world cup-— the serial—killer nurse lucy letby. she was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six more. there are concerns that nhs bosses failed to respond adequately when questions about letby*s conduct were raised. simonjones reports. the smiling nurse who was a killer of babies she was supposed to be caring for. this is the moment lucy letby was arrested. the british medical association says her crimes have shocked the nation, and something similar must never be allowed to happen again. consultants at the countess of chester hospital say senior managers ignored their repeated warnings about letby for many months, despite hospital bosses claiming there was a culture of listening. it was secretive, it was judgemental. there was no credibility given to our opinions. and from january 2017, it was intimidating. bullying, to a certain extent. the consultants who raised concerns at one point even had to send letby an apology letter, against their wishes, for any stress and upset she may have experienced due to their comments. they also feared being reported to the general medical council when they continued to push for the police to be brought in. the gmc they feel for those players. i asked them what is different about it, and they said that they feel like a family member, that*s how close they are to them. most of them said they had great confidence in the team. yes, there are nerves but they have got better and better throughout the tournament and better throughout the tournament and of course, the semifinal game where they beat the matildas on home soil, they performed so well and they really inspired a lot of excitement among the fans. i was chatting to people who said, we have come all the way from england, we are not going to get out of here empty—handed, we have confidence they will deliver it. but of course, not since 1966 has world cup glory been so close to an england side and it*s the women who are looking to bring it home. they are notjust going to be up against spain, who are determined to get revenge after the loss in the euros, they will also be up against many australian fans who have switched allegiance in support after their team was kicked out by england, who know they will also be supporting spain but i*m sure the fans will make their voices heard inside the stadium. much appreciated. we look forward to that build up a bit later. back in the premier league, no kane, no problem for tottenham, as ange postecoglou*s side beat manchester united 2—0. after a chaotic first half, it was pape sarr*s goal that broke the deadlock shortly after the break. spurs sealed all three points late on, when ivan perisic*s cross took a touch off ben davies before being directed in to his own goal by lisandro martinez. things went much better for the team on the other side of manchester as city ran out 1—0 winners over newcastle united. julian alvarez*s superb first—half goal was enough to see the champions past newcastle. the victory sees them two from two so far this season. liverpool got their first win of the season, beating bournemouth 3—1 in a controversial game at anfield. liverpool fell behind early on. but a clever goalfrom luis diaz was quickly followed by this mo salah penalty — which he scored on the rebound — and diogojota added the third. summer signing alexis mac allister was controversially sent off for the home side in the second half, jurgen klopp calling the world cup winner unlucky. brighton were 4—1 winners at wolves — solly march got two whilst karo mitoma scored this incredible solo goal as they maintained their 100% start to the season. and brentford picked up theirfirst win of the season, a second half brace from bryan mbeumo helping them to a 3—0 victory over fulham. rangers survived a league cup fright against greenock morton before recovering to secure their place in the quarterfinals. a grant gillespie penalty seven minutes into the second half had given the championship side hopes of an upset at ibrox. however, another penaty, this time from cyriel dessers, followed by this danilo winner eight minutes later took rangers into the last eight. great britain picked up theirfirst medal on day one of the world athletics championships in budapest. it came in the llx1l00m metre mixed relay — it was an incredible finish, with the dutch athlete femke bol falling when she was in the lead approaching the finish line. that gave usa the gold, whilst britain picked up the silver. meanwhile, katarina johnson—thompson is also in a good position in the heptathlon. this strong run in the 200 metres saw herfinish in second place overnight after four events, that*s behind the leader, america*s anna hall. it*s been another setback for england in their preparations for next month*s rugby union world cup, as they were beaten in ireland. forward billy vunipola could miss part of the tournament in france after he was sent off for a high tackle a week after 0wen farrell*s controversial red card against wales. ireland had already scored a couple of tries at that stage, five in totalfor them, as they ran out comfortable winners — 29—10 it finished in dublin. in cardiff, world champions south africa demolished an inexperienced wales side, scoring eight tries on the way to a 52—16 win. there was a successful return to action for springboks captain siya kolisi, who has recovered from a knee injury. the boks play new zealand at twickenham in their final warm—up game on friday. it was the challenge cup winners leigh leopards against the league leaders catalans dragons in super league. and leigh were brought back down to earth after that famous win at wembley last weekend. despite leading twice, they eventually succumbed to the french side, losing by 30 points to m. there we go, the world cup comes to its culmination later on but the rugby union world up this next post world cup fever! gavin, thank you. we will have another couple of hours a build up until kick—off. but let*s talk about the weather now. in a moment we will have the full forecast. whilst the wet weather has brought misery to holiday makers across the country, it appears it may have had a great effect on english vineyards. the dryjune and wetjuly provided perfect conditions for a bumper harvest of high quality grapes — all they need now is some end of summer sunshine. ellie crisell has this report from the bolney wine estate in west sussex. the english wine industry has grown and grown, but sussex home to the most vineyards. crepes may be ellie crisell in west sussex. the queen of crime, agatha christie, is the world*s best—selling novelist and most translated author. to celebrate her success, a bronze sculpture is to go on display in her home town of torquay — and fans of her work will decide which book she should be holding. emma ruminski reports. there is no mistaking who this is. the sculpture of torquay*s most famous daughter is reaching completion. elizabeth hadley has painstakingly been recreating crime writer agatha christie in clay all summer in her brixham studio, ready to be cast in bronze. she is clearly the iconic author we all recognise now but elizabeth found it hard to choose what period of her life to depict. well, i was going to do a younger initially and then i thought, and she had her hat on and the hat looks great and everything, but i felt, people are just not going to recognise her. so i went back to the, you know, the photos you see on the book covers, the ones that people think, that*s agatha christie. elizabeth met with agatha*s family to help portray a true likeness. went up to visit them to take some photos for the research and they were lovely, they were very kind and helpful. i*m sure they*d like to come and have a look. i think they come down for the agatha christie festival, don*t they? which is september so maybe they will come over then and have a look. the position of her little dog will change in the final sculpture. elizabeth was waiting for the right model to appear. i was driving down church street, just past all saints and i saw this lady and she had fox terriers and i thought, that*s the dog i need. so ijust stopped the car, jumped out and asked her if she*d mind. she was quite happy to let me have one of her dogs! you*re going to muddle it on her dog? that*s lovely! elizabeth has spent a lot of time on the fine details on this sculpture but the final one to choose is what to put on the book. agatha had so many successful novels, she*s not quite sure which one to choose. the bestselling novelist of all time, agatha christie has sold a billion crime novels in english and another billion in translation. with 66 crime novels to choose from, torbay council intend to hold a public vote to determine which one elizabeth should place in the sculpture*s hand. eventually she will take pride of place on a bench in torquay*s harbour—side as part of the strand redevelopment. emma ruminski, bbc news. agatha christie, i don*t know if you have ever seen the mousetrap? i did. have ever seen the mousetrap? i did, it was the first — have quite blustery. eastern scotland, much of england and wales, apart from the shower, mostly dry with the best of the sunshine in the south—east, temperatures 25, 26 or even 27. a bit cooler and fresher after a warm start to the week, it will turn fresher for the week, it will turn fresher for the end of the week and into the weekend. so some pleasant warm spells of sunshine across much of england and wales through the middle part of the week and beyond there it is looking more and settle come, it*s not going to be a wash out into the bank holiday weekend but there will be showers or longer spells of rain at times and feeling a bit cooler too. he was talking about the weather in the sunshine we have got now. if you needed a little boost this morning to get you in the sporting mood, we*re going to listen to the foot guards band performing some iconic tunes in support of the lionesses. have a look at the gorgeous morning sunshine. let*s see if we can have a listen to what they any time they can be thrown into the heart of a war zone or humanitarian crisis. yes, so mark cieslak has been to meet the soldiers of 16 air assault brigade to see how technology is helping to train troops. for these soldiers from 2nd battalion, the parachute regiment, anything could be waiting behind this door. experience in places like iraq and afghanistan has taught the british army that entering a building in a conflict zone can be extremely dangerous. colchester in essex is home to the elite 16 air assault brigade, the british army*s global response force, specially trained and equipped to deploy by parachute, helicopter and air landing — ready to be sent anywhere in the world at a moment*s notice and able to perform a wide variety of roles, from warfighting... explosion ..to providing humanitarian assistance. as a result, the troops here, like the soldiers of 2 para, are constantly training. british military training adapts to new threats all of the time. this might look like a mannequin that*s been repurposed as a target, but this target shoots back. this is 16 air assault*s new urban training facility. you don*t know who indeed is inside those urban areas, whether it be an enemy threat, whether it be a different actor, whether it be civilian. so you need to be aware of all different eventualities. it integrates a host of technologies, including cameras, sensors and speakers which monitor and create environments designed to prepare these paratroopers for real world operations. this facility provides the integration of improvised ied explosions, different noises, dogs barking. it provides all of this realism that the soldiers would face in an urban environment on operations. so it*s not only about going into a building knowing that there*s going to be enemy threat inside there. it*s what else is in there as well. this is called a figure 11 target. it*s made of paper and wood, and it*s been used by the army to hone soldiers* marksmanship skills for decades. alert beeps called sim stryker, this sensor—laden smart target aims to crank up the pressure on troops that it comes up against — notjust by shooting back with small plastic bbs. shot! this target is programmed to be able to detect noise and also detect movement. so when the individuals are moving into rooms, whether they*re opening doors, if these targets hear anything like that, they become alert. when these targets are then alert, they will then speak to each other. when you*re then coming into a room, they*re already preprogrammed to know the likelihood of the entrance that you*re going to come inside. and as soon as they detect that movement, they will then start to engage towards your direction. enemy down! if troops are preparing for a deployment to a specific location, the sights, sounds and even smells that they might find on the ground can be recreated inside this space. all of the walls are modular and can be reconfigured and moved around to create a wide variety of different environments. instructors debrief the soldiers in a nearby control room, analysing their performance and data on the accuracy of their shots, all captured by cameras and sensors in the sim stryker and the training facility. centre of mass for those shots as well, in case they*ve got body armour... sim stryker and this training centre which is called a smart facility are the work of uk company 4gd. founded by military veterans, the tech they have designed has been informed by their own experience in the field. the physical aspect of this activity sets it apart from purely tech—based training solutions like virtual reality simulators. we really recognise that virtuality offers huge potential when it comes to training, delivery and exposure, but it*s got to be applied properly. having people in headsets with gaming controllers, whilst it can be good for some things, we don*t think it*s actually representative of the soldier training in a physicalfacility. to change a magazine, for example, is still a very dexterous skill that requires lots of practice. where we*re taking it is being able to blend the virtual world and blend the physical world. so because we collect data inside of our facilities, we can use that data to provide a real—time virtual picture of everything that*s happening inside of that facility. from that, we can start to introduce assets like drones, for instance. so it*s bringing virtuality into the physical world, i suppose, is what we would do with it. but how do the soldiers themselves feel about being troops trained with the help of all of this tech? as a team leader, it gives you a lot to think about, there*s a lot of options as you go through. you*ve got a lot to consider, with the layout, the best place to put your troops, not to put them at more risk. this sort of kit looks set to become a bigger part of military training. 4gd has a deal with the us army and is preparing to roll out more training facilities like this one with the british army as well. for the military, in training and in real—world operations, one thing is certain — recent events prove preparation is crucial, as you never know what threat could be around the next corner. now, for many people around the world, subtitles are vital. in fact, you might be using them on screen right now. but the problem is that, most of the time, there isn*t a screen in front of us — well, actually, there is quite a lot at the time. but for people that are deaf or hard of hearing, sometimes when they*re trying to follow a conversation, it can be challenging. but there are ways to get subtitles when you*re out and about. for example, a new app, called xrai glass, can provide them, and importantly, put them right in front of your eyes, using a pair of smart glasses. so we*ve asked one woman, who*s also an elite rugby player, to put them to the test. my name*s jodie 0unsley. i*m 22 years old, i*m a professional rugby player for exeter chiefs. i was born premature, and i became ill quite quickly, and then we soon discovered that i was profoundly deaf. the only information that was given wasjodie probably won*t be able to speak. she*ll struggle in education, and herjob prospects will be bleak. of course, we now know that none of that is true. when i was 13 months old, i had a cochlear implant fitted on the right side. it*s no cure, it*s not normal hearing. itjust allows me to hear some sounds and mostly lip read. as i grew up, i learnt more about my deafness, and obviously, going through school, that*s when i sort of faced challenges and struggled a little bit more. and then i discovered rugby when i was around 15. i thought, we*ll take her, she*ll have one session, not like it and that will be out of her system. so we came down here to sandal rugby club in wakefield, and she was too nervous to get out of the car. i was personally more worried about, what if i miss things on the pitch? what if the coaches don*t really understand that i*m deaf, or, what if the players don*t really know how to react? after some encouragement, she came out, had a session, went really well. couple of years later, here i am, you know, being a professional rugby player. at exeter chiefs, we have a whole range of different players from all over the world, and there*s one player, called tricky, who has a very thick irish accent. and even, you know, my hearing team—mates struggle to understand her sometimes, never mind the deaf person! and there were one time we was just having a conversation, we were making a joke saying, "oh, if only you had live captions so that we could understand what you were saying." and i kid you not, literally a couple of days later, i was scrolling through my phone on instagram and then the xrai glasses came up and i saw a reaction video. and i couldn*t believe it — i messaged tricky, i was like, "can you believe this, there*s actually subtitle glasses!" it was quite surreal. you get through your life and it is a struggle on a daily basis, but you just crack on. suddenly, to have these glasses, where i*m speaking to someone, and not having to solely concentrate on lip reading, i was able to almost relax a little bit more and just see the subtitles come above me. there*s loads of different functions, but the one i mainly use is obviously live captions. so how did you feel seeing me wear the xrai glasses for the first time? first time we tried them, it was quite emotional, really, because, you know, potentially it*s a life—changing piece of tech for you to use. and in your sports side of things, fine margins is a big issue. so if it can just give you that edge in understanding analysis, it*s going to be a real benefit to you. we have a software, they upload the training footage or game footage, and then our coaching team will do, like, a voiceover. obviously you can*t see the face, so you just hear the voiceover whilst watching training back. so, there*s a couple of really good single shots here from both nash and pops, in terms of getting your feet in close, your tackle height being really positive and a good solid shoulder shot with a good rap. so that*s quite difficult for me to pick up sound without being able to lip read. so i feel like i*m focusing more on trying to listen what my coach is saying, rather than focusing on the footage. but obviously with the xrai glasses, i can put the glasses on and obviously watch training as normal. but as my coach is speaking, obviously i get live captions as well. that might sound so simple and so little, but that*s like a massive thing for me cos then obviously i can focus on the rugby and not focus on what i*m missing. i think people think that you have to do drastic things to make it easierfor notjust deaf people, but anyone with a disability. it*s just little tweaks and just that openness and honesty. and yeah, my teammates have just been brilliant and supportive really. it*s so exciting to even see xrai glasses, to see where it is now. they*re pretty much at the start of the journey and it*s already amazing. so to even think about where they could be in a couple of years* time, it*s — it*s quite scary but also really exciting to think about. and that*s it for the short cut of click this week. the full—length version is up now on iplayer. we*ll be back next week, thanks for watching. good morning and welcome to breakfast with ben boulos and luxme gopal. 0ur headlines today... with just since the morning, i have been with england fans, i've spoken to some fans here at the park you are making their way in fans here at the park you are making theirway in and fans here at the park you are making their way in and i must tell you, after knocking out the matildas on home soil with the heartbreak that they didn't make it all the way through, many of the australian fans have switched allegiances to spain so england will be playing against spain on the pitch but also up against tens of thousands of australian fans who are going to be cheering spain on. but if what the fans have told me earlier is anything to go by, england fans will be loud, they have practised their songs this morning, it was lovely to see, but the anticipation is picking up see, but the anticipation is picking up because the heft of the day, this immense moment is dawning on everyone, history is up for grabs, it's the lionesses who are hoping they are going to clinch it. whoever wins, a new name come. when you speak to fans, to young girls and boys who have jerseys now of the matildas but also the lionesses, who know the players now by name, the players have become household names. you see throughout the competition and despite some turmoil and the relationship between some players and the couch, the team is saying they will remain united to try to beat england. the truth is, after are watching along as well, co—owners of that team. gavin, thank you. just over a couple of hours until kick off and there are lots of outdoor screens across the country for people to watch the final, so let's see what the forecast is going to be like. here's stav with a look at this morning's weather. not bad at all today if you do have outdoor plans and of course come across in sydney this evening it looks set fair for the match, temperatures around 17 celsius just after sunset and generally light winds. so all good news on that front. back home, there will be a lot of dry and sunny and warm weather around today. the shah risks mainly towards the north and west, the winds were also lighter. the reason for the lighter winds and more sunshine in the south, notjust for today but the next few days is because of high pressure over the near continent, so south—eastern areas because of this will benefit. no pressure in the north west will bring more of a breeze to scotland and northern ireland and a greater risk of seeing ship showers. that's what we do have this afternoon. there may be the odd isolated shark across england and wales but you'll be lucky if you catch one. most leases staying drive. —— but the odd isolated chart. feeling pleasantly warm, mid to high 20s, could be around 26 or so across the woman spots in the east. high teens or low 20s for the north. monday, similar set up with higher pressure of the near continent, this area of low pressure starts to encroach a bit closer through the data northern ireland and scotland, so the winds will pick up here, after a fine day, plenty of sunshine even across scotland and northern ireland, the winds will pick up and we will see showers are merging into longer spells of rain. the odd shower elsewhere for england and wales, eastern scotland but a lot of sunshine, feeling warm again, could be at 26 a may be 27 in the warmest spots across south—east england. low 20s for the north, cooler than that for the northern and western isles. tuesday, more cloud to start but again, we are looking at dry, settled and sunny weather across southern and eastern parts. more showers and sunny spells for northern and western areas. another warm day on tuesday in the south and east, high teens or low 20s in scotland and northern ireland. then things start to change mid week, we start to see the atlantic coming back to life, weather fronts pushing across the country by thursday. could be getting heavy or thundery downpours here but low pressure takes over and starts to bring west north—westerly winds across the uk, you can see the orange colour is ebbing away back into the near continent. so a cooler and fresher feel on friday and indeed into the next weekend, which will be a bank holiday. it will be turning cooler, increasing showers, it won't be a wash—out but he will have to cater for the chance of some showers and it will be a bit cooler but enjoy your sunday, and fingers crossed for the weather for the game out in sydney. back to you. whilst the wet weather has brought misery to holiday makers across the country, it appears it may have had a great effect on
