uk whistleblowing law is extremely weak. i think many people don't realise that. you often read in the media that whistleblowers are protected by the law. they're not. there is no protection for whistleblowers under uk law. no—one is legally required to protect whistleblowers. all that whistleblowers are entitled to under uk whistleblowing law is to make a retrospective claim forfinancial compensation, long, long after the fact and long, long after they've been seriously injured as a result of reprisal. and for example, in the case of dr macanovic, an nhs whistleblower, a relatively recent case, an employment tribunal found her to be a genuine whistleblower who was entirely blameless, who was unfairly dismissed by the nhs. she went through several years of a terrible ordeal. her health was seriously impacted. she had to spend a great deal of money to defend herself legally, and at the end of that process, having had to relocate herfamily, she was still out of pocket, even with the compensation that was awarded. so you can imagine that's hardly an incentive for other nhs staff to whistle blow, and because of incidents of that sort, there is no learning and there is no accountability. senior nhs managers know that that is allowed. dr alexande, so what you're concerning, because the red flag dr alexander, so what you're concerning, because the red flag for me is that essentially we are lying to employees that they will be protected. we hear this time and time again from organisations, you know, it's a safe environment to go and see maybe your hr department, you know, you will be listened to, you will be protected. i mean, the damage in trust that this particular case has exposed to whistleblowers, i mean, it's a scandal, isn't it? why is there no law? why has this lie been maintained? it's very convenient to power. whistleblowers are a friend to the public, but they are not a friend to power. and power controls lawmaking. when the current uk whistleblower was made over 20 years ago, when the current uk whistleblower law was made over 20 years ago, there was an open discussion of the fact that it needed to be watered down to please industry. employers did not want it to be truly effective. and parliament went along with that. it was never properly debated in parliament. it was nodded through. but it has been a masterpiece of spin to mislead the public into believing that something had been done to protect whistleblowers whistleblowers when it hadn't and it had been entirely against the public*s interest. and it really is time for the public to be informed of that deception. well, hopefully they've just listened and heard what we've discussed here. is there any example globally where whistleblowers are adequately protected and the uk can learn from? you know, there are a number of examples. nowhere is perfect, and i don't believe there ever will be a whistleblowing law that is perfect, because the nature of these things is that they are easily corrupted. you can design any law and somebody will find a way around it, but you can do your best. and the important thing is that you have checks and balances built into the law so that it has regular review and that lawmakers and not governments regularly have oversight and make sure that the mechanism isn't stale or is perverted. that's the best you can do. the nature of power is that these things will eventually get corrupted, but the version of it that we have in this country certainly could be improved with lessons from otherjurisdictions. live a neonatal unit like the one here where lucy letby worked would expect there to be about three deaths of babies a year but injune 2015, there were three deaths in that one month. and we know now that concerns were already being raised in the summer of 2015, so eight years ago. we know that doctors raise concerns that letby was always on shift when these babies were dying or when these babies were dying or when these babies were dying or when these babies were being harmed. e—mails were sent to senior managers but we know that the deaths were not being recorded properly, so they weren't picked made to apologise to lucy letby for any fact that she had been caused when she raised a grievance against them. we have heard from tony chambers that he was staying long before this time that whistle—blowing in the nhs was imported and that whistle—blowers would be protected. there are lots of questions to him today. about what he knew, what his senior bosses knew and why more wasn't done, because of course lucy letby was allowed to work here at the neonatal unit and she went on to harm and kill more babies.— kill more babies. thank you very much indeed. _ ukraine says at least seven speak to her father, step—mother and uncle. they flew to pakistan the day before sara's body was found with extensive injuries at her home in woking. our correspondent leigh milner has been at the scene in woking. if you just look behind me, you can see just how the community have responded to this incident. there are plenty of cards, messages from the well—wishers that have visited all throughout the morning. in fact, i spoke to one dad who came this morning with his two little children. they came to lay flowers and he just said he couldn't get it out of his head what had happened. now, what the police have told us is, they've given us an insight into what has happened inside this house and how it all came about. well, it turns out that a 999 call was made from pakistan, and that call came from sarah's father, 41—year—old urfan sharif. it turns out he had traveled there the day before with the entire family, and they had one—way tickets. and that's exactly why this is now turned into an international manhunt. they're currently looking for him along with his brother, faisal malik, and his partner, beinash batool. now, they traveled to pakistan with their five children. we don't yet know where they are, but the police here are working with authorities over there. what we also know is that a post—mortem examination has been carried out on sara's body. they haven't yet found out what the cause of death was, but police did find out some rather disturbing details about how she may have been living. we have identified three people we would like to speak to as part of the ongoing investigation. sara's father urfan sharif, his partner beinash batool, and urfan's brother faisal malik. it is believed irfan travelled to islamabad in pakistan in company with his partner and his brother on wednesday, the 9th of august. the post—mortem did, however, reveal that sara had suffered multiple and extensive injuries, which are now likely to have been caused over a sustained and extended period of time. the fact that we now know that sara had suffered injuries over an extended period has significantly changed the nature of our investigation, and we have widened the timescale and the focus of our inquiry. now, going forward, if these individuals are found, it is going to be tricky. if they don't volunteer themselves, it would most likely involve an extradition. and for that to happen, they would need enough evidence to convince both the courts here in the uk and in pakistan. and because there's no extradition treaty between pakistan and the uk, this whole process could in fact take years. but at the moment, the manhunt continues for those three individuals. now it's time for a look at today's sport. hello from the bbc sport centre. for england and spain, it's the night before the morning after, with both teams involved in the women's world cup final, preparing for the biggest day of their sporting lives when they wake up in australia. they've had their final training sessions ahead of sunday's meeting in sydney, with england's players speaking about how manager sarina wiegman has taken the fear factor away. while it's a first finalfor the squad, for wiegman, it isn't. her netherlands team were runners up in 2019, and she's been trying to keep the players relaxed, even if they appreciate there's a lot of people wishing them well. 0ur preparations don't change. for me that's key and that's a key part of preparation so for us, i'll allow the players to prepare in any way that they normally do. i think everyone knows how big this is. i think it's been players* dreams everyone knows how big this is. i think it*s been players* dreams for years so everybody already knows that. we know how passionate our nation is back home and how much they want us to win. we have a game plan to execute and we need to play the game of our lives. it's incredible what happened. we have felt the support here but also from the other side of the world. in the uk, and that is something that you dream of and we just hope that we play our best game ever tomorrow and that is everyone who is watching in the stadium, in the uk and every place else that else that supports us, is going to enjoy it. so, england take on a spain side, who*ve also reached their first world cup final, and hadn*t even won a knockout match before this tournament. they*ve got this far despite off—the—field problems between players and coach over the last year. however, those that remain in the squad insist the experience of this competition has brought them closer together. we have a really good squad. we are all together and i think that we all have the same goal since the beginning. that has been shown. we*ve been going through this world cup, we have made a good group and we have been through good moments on the pitch and that*s made us believe in the team and make us be together. and i think that*s very important as well, going through the semifinals, but their hopes of finishing third and getting bronze medals were ended by sweden. the swedes are the highest ranked team in the last four, and made it count in the third place play—off in brisbane. kosovare asllani scored a stunning second after an earlier penalty and 2—0 is how it finished. the world triathlon para cup in paris had to be a duathlon as another 0lympics test event was unable to take place in the city*s river seine. the swimming leg didn*t happen following "discrepancies" in water quality tests, which hadn*t affected these events earlier in the week when competitors were able to practise in the river. world aquatics said the decision was made to "not put the health and safety of the athletes at risk". the world athletics championships are underway in budapest, despite the start being delayed by a thunderstorm in the hungarian capital. the first medal of the competition went to spain in the men*s 20km race walk, as alvaro martin took the gold in a world—leading time. a total of four golds will be handed out today. you can keep across all the action on the bbc sport website. and that*s all the sport for now. is there something big coming up on spells and scattered showers for many parts of the uk. let*s take a look at the next few hours across the uk. you can see the remnants of storm betty with heavy rain still with us through the northern isles. and a wrap around with cloud and rain through parts of western scotland, in towards northern ireland but improving here through the afternoon with sunny skies. and for much of england and wales, some sunshine and scattered showers. temperatures across the east and southeast in the mid twenties, that*s above average, and many north sea coasts feeling warmer than it did yesterday. as we head into this evening and indeed tonight, that low pressure that was storm betty still towards the northwest, giving us a northwest, southeast split. so taking a look through the course of saturday evening, most of that heavy rain clearing away, but still breezy, if not windy around some western coasts, through western parts of scotland and the hebrides and around irish sea coasts, too, but not the strength of wind we saw. elsewhere, dry, one ortwo showers and temperatures lower than last night. now, of course, on sunday, all eyes on sydney for that big game in the fifa world cup final. and after a pleasant winter*s day in sydney, by the time we reach kickoff, we*re looking at temperatures around about the mid to high teens. plenty of sunshine, although a breeze coming in from the west. so for those looking to watch the game outdoors here at home, it*s largely dry on sunday with some sunshine, a few showers around. at times, we could see a few lines of showers coming in through parts of south wales in towards the southern midlands. once again, it*s parts of england and the south east of england that have the driest, warmest weather. cooler further north, breezy as well. next week, that low pressure still with us to the north, perhaps tracking around east and west again at times, with higher pressure further south and east. and that means we still have that northwest, southeast split. you can see on monday, wet weather in towards parts of northern ireland and western scotland as well. but eastern scotland and for much of england, dry with some sunshine, a few showers in towards wales and once again, temperatures in the southeast reaching the mid twenties. further north, not too bad. so just to recap, through the course of the weekend into next week in the south, it*s dry and settled. a little more unsettled, though, as we head further north. that*s the forecast for now. this is bbc news, the headlines: the uk government has been urged to strengthen the independent inquiry it*s announced into the crimes of lucy letby. she*s the nurse who was convicted of murdering seven babies at a hospital in chester. the local member of parliament is calling for a public inquiry led by a judge. the number of people killed in a russian missile attack in northern ukraine has now risen to seven, including a six—year—old child. ukrainian officials say another 90 people were wounded when the missile landed in the centre of chernihiv. 25 have been taken to hosptial. football, and sweden have beaten australia in the third—place play—off game in the women*s world cup. they won 2—0. the result was a disappointment for the australian team, known as the matildas, who were hoping to secure victory in front of a home crowd in brisbane. now on bbc news, take me to the opera: a time of change. i*ve been an opera fan for decades, and i want to share my passion with you. so i*m on a mission to find out how opera is trying to attract new audiences and reinvent itself. this time i meet sir antonio pappano in the run—up to the end of his remarkable tenure as music director of the royal opera house in london, one of the top jobs in opera. as a celebrated conductor, he wins praise and plaudits

uk whistleblowing law is extremely weak. i think many people don't realise that. you often read in the media that whistleblowers are protected by the law. they're not. there is no protection for whistleblowers under uk law. no—one is legally required to protect whistleblowers. all that whistleblowers are entitled to under uk whistleblowing law is to make a retrospective claim forfinancial compensation, long, long after the fact and long, long after they've been seriously injured as a result of reprisal. and for example, in the case of dr macanovic, an nhs whistleblower, a relatively recent case, an employment tribunal found her to be a genuine whistleblower who was entirely blameless, who was unfairly dismissed by the nhs. she went through several years of a terrible ordeal. her health was seriously impacted. she had to spend a great deal of money to defend herself legally, and at the end of that process, having had to relocate herfamily, she was still out of pocket, even with the compensation that was awarded. so you can imagine that's hardly an incentive for other nhs staff to whistle blow, and because of incidents of that sort, there is no learning and there is no accountability. senior nhs managers know that that is allowed. dr alexande, so what you're concerning, because the red flag dr alexander, so what you're concerning, because the red flag for me is that essentially we are lying to employees that they will be protected. we hear this time and time again from organisations, you know, it's a safe environment to go and see maybe your hr department, you know, you will be listened to, you will be protected. i mean, the damage in trust that this particular case has exposed to whistleblowers, i mean, it's a scandal, isn't it? why is there no law? why has this lie been maintained? it's very convenient to power. whistleblowers are a friend to the public, but they are not a friend to power. and power controls lawmaking. when the current uk whistleblower was made over 20 years ago, when the current uk whistleblower law was made over 20 years ago, there was an open discussion of the fact that it needed to be watered down to please industry. employers did not want it to be truly effective. and parliament went along with that. it was never properly debated in parliament. it was nodded through. but it has been a masterpiece of spin to mislead the public into believing that something had been done to protect whistleblowers whistleblowers when it hadn't and it had been entirely against the public*s interest. and it really is time for the public to be informed of that deception. well, hopefully they've just listened and heard what we've discussed here. is there any example globally where whistleblowers are adequately protected and the uk can learn from? you know, there are a number of examples. nowhere is perfect, and i don't believe there ever will be a whistleblowing law that is perfect, because the nature of these things is that they are easily corrupted. you can design any law and somebody will find a way around it, but you can do your best. and the important thing is that you have checks and balances built into the law so that it has regular review and that lawmakers and not governments regularly have oversight and make sure that the mechanism isn't stale or is perverted. that's the best you can do. the nature of power is that these things will eventually get corrupted, but the version of it that we have in this country certainly could be improved with lessons from otherjurisdictions. live a neonatal unit like the one here where lucy letby worked would expect there to be about three deaths of babies a year but injune 2015, there were three deaths in that one month. and we know now that concerns were already being raised in the summer of 2015, so eight years ago. we know that doctors raise concerns that letby was always on shift when these babies were dying or when these babies were made to apologise to lucy letby for any fact that she had been caused when she raised a grievance against them. we have heard from tony chambers that he was staying long before this time that whistle—blowing in the nhs was imported and that whistle—blowers would be protected. there are lots of questions to him today. about what he knew, what his senior bosses knew and why more wasn't done, because of course lucy letby was allowed to work here at the neonatal unit and she went on to harm and kill more babies.— kill more babies. thank you very much indeed.
