the skyscrapers are in moscow. you will remember that is an area that has come under attack twice at the beginning of this month. no casualties reported. russian media showed damage to an exhibition centre in that area, west of the city centre. but it wasn't completely clear whether that damage was caused by debris from the drone falling, or whether actually, the drone hit its target. drone attacks in areas around moscow are relatively common. in fact, we hear almost every day about drones being shot down or drones being discovered on the ground. but it is relatively rare for a drone to get this far into the city centre and this close to the kremlin itself, about three miles away was where this incident took place. you will remember at the beginning of may, the kremlin itself was attacked by two drones. we'll have more later on the use of joe's by ukraine in the war with russia. saudi arabian officials have confirmed that the british government has invited crown prince mohammed bin salman to the uk in october. there's been sharp criticism from opposition parties and campaigners over the gulf leader's human rights record. this report from our political correspondent helen catt. crown prince mohammed bin salman last came to the uk in march 2018. but later that same year, a journalist, jamal khashoggi, was brutally murdered inside a saudi embassy. american intelligence agencies concluded the killing had been authorised by mohammed bin salman, which he denied. some say inviting him back would send all the wrong signals. what we should be doing is thinking about how we influence these countries and, as i said, rolling out the red carpet, treating them as welcome guests is not the way to do it. saudi arabia is currently spending very big money trying to shift its economy away from oil. it's also investing heavily in sport, including buying newcastle united. the uk is keen to encourage more trade and investment between the two countries, particularly in cutting—edge industries, and to get a trade deal with a group of countries in the gulf of which saudi arabia is a member. those six countries, of which saudi arabia is by far the largest and most important, represent a significant opportunity for the uk. we already have £60 billion in two—way trade and we're hoping to sign a trade deal with them and, given our departure from the european union, it's important that we tie in these other trade deals. a government source said the government view was that it would be in a stronger position to talk about what they are doing if it was working with them, not lecturing them from the outside. labour's deputy leader, angela rayner, said there needed to be a dialogue, but said the prime minister had to raise human rights issues on the visit. some believe that won't have an effect. i would be very worried and am very worried by an invitation for a visit where it appears that the uk government is sending a clear message that uk leadership on human rights, which is something that we should be proud of, is now taking a back seat when it comes to saudi arabia. downing street has not yet confirmed an invitation has been issued and the saudis haven't said if it's been accepted. but in a phone call yesterday, rishi sunak said he looked forward to meeting the crown prince in person at the earliest opportunity. either way, any visit is likely to have to be carefully managed. helen catt, bbc news, westminster. in hawaii, maui's emergency management chief has announced his resignation over the island's response to devastating wildfires. herman andaya has been heavily criticised for deciding not to activate a siren warning system in the midst of the wildfires. meanwhile, the search for victims continues — at least 111 people are now confirmed dead. whilst the exact cause of the wildfires is being investigated — mounting evidence shows downed power lines could have played a role. thousands of people are rushing to leave a city in canada's north west as wildfires close in on their remote community. fires have been spreading across canada's sparsely—populated northwest territories for months now, but in recent days they've threatened the territory's capital, yellowknife. it has a population ofjust 20,000. the next largest city lies 1,000 kilometres away. that makes the emergency response much more difficult. the order to leave came as the fire reached yellowknife's boundaries. 0llie williams is a journalist from yellowknife who has fled the city. he gave us this update a short while ago. i'm now in a small village called fort simpson, which is about 630 kilometres west of yellowknife. probably sounds like a huge distance. it really isn't in northwest territories terms — this place is twice the size of france. it's got 16,000 people in it. so vast scales that we're talking about. this is essentially three communities to the left of yellowknife. you can just hear a float plane in the distance, by the way. this is the mackenzie river behind me. yellowknife is under a full evacuation order, as you've probably heard yesterday. we came out here a day before because, to be frank, the writing has been on the wall for days that that wildfire was going to pose a grave threat. there's a huge lake called great slave lake. yellowknife is on the top of it. then, at the other side of that lake, it's a very large lake, you have two communities called fort smith and hay river. together they've got about 7,000 people in them. on saturday and sunday last weekend, they were both told to evacuate. thousands of people fleeing down the highway to alberta, where they still are. we have no timeline for when people might be able to get back to those communities. there hasn't even been any communications in those communities. there's no internet, no landline, no cell phones. there hasn't been for days and days now. and we've just heard in the last couple of hours here that the community of kakisa, it's a tiny community. it's only 36 people, but they've been told they've got to flee, as well. the evacuation order getting them west to this community, actually, fort simpson, which will be an evacuation centre for them. so we've got seven or eight different communities under evacuation orders right now. more than half the territory's population is out of their homes. with me now is security correspondent frank gardner. ukraine has been making extensive use of drones in their "fight back" you've been investigating, can you give us an update? this is not the first drone war but it is almost certainly the most intense drone war we have ever seen. they are and integral part of the battle space because both sides, russia and ukraine, have effective air defences, so it is too dangerous for piloted aircraft to fly to close to the front line, or at least a very long. we have seen a ramping up of drones, both aerial but also interestingly, something we've been looking into, maritime drones, boat bombs, see drones, but basically remotely piloted 5.5 metre long boats, newbury on them, steered from the shore with explosive on—board to hit targets quite deep into russian territory —— nobody on—board them. in the last month the ukrainians have managed to hit back by sending explosive sea drones all the way round crimea to hit russian targets. and this is what one of these sea drones looks like. it's technically called an uncrewed surface vessel. a usv. they are 5.5 metres long, made by the ukrainians, and the manufacturers say they have a range of around 500 kilometres and they can carry a warhead of at least 300 kilos of high explosive. using the coastline and the stars, we have verified this footage taken on lith august, filmed from one of these sea drones when it hit a russian landing craft ship in the russian port of novorossiysk. that is a long way inside russian territory. here is what the ship looked like the next day. you can see very clearly that it is damaged, listing to one side, despite russian denials. here it is being repaired. that is a substantial hole blown in its side. ukraine has also used sea drones to hit a russian oil tanker taking supplies to russian bases in syria. but ukraine's sea drones do not always get through. russia says it has been able to intercept them before they reach their target. but what is the overall effect here? can these sea drones still give ukraine an advantage in the black sea? these attacks have a strong, significant impact on morale in the kremlin, and also among the russian population, and i believe that seeing the ship being hit by the ukrainian navy with relatively cheap and inexpensive maritime robots must be particularly painful to putin personally, because he has invested a lot of attention and resources in raising the russian navy from its knees. ukraine is getting help from western intelligence. this map shows recent us surveillance drones flying from an italian air base in the mediterranean all the way up to the black sea to spy on russian naval activity there. these drones can see forward, hundreds of kilometres as they fly. so sea drones are still in development, they can be electronically intercepted or shot out of the water. russia remains a threat to any shipping coming in and out of ukraine's ports. but for ukraine, these sea drones are a highly cost—effective way of hitting back at their giant invading neighbour, russia. interesting to see how drones are changing things. give us a sense of the picture of the conflict.- the picture of the conflict. ukraine is still engaging — the picture of the conflict. ukraine is still engaging in _ the picture of the conflict. ukraine is still engaging in what _ the picture of the conflict. ukraine is still engaging in what it - the picture of the conflict. ukraine is still engaging in what it has - is still engaging in what it has called its counter offensive, trying to push russian forces out of this swings of territory in the south and east that that they seized in 2022. they are having limited success, it is going a lot slower than they'd hoped, but they are making slow grinding process. the big problem for ukraine is that russia has so intense minefields, ukraine has to clear those painstakingly, yard by yard, metre by metre, that is taking time. it is unlikely they will break through by the end of the summer. but ukraine is confident that they will eventually do this, that the russian morale will eventually crack, what they are doing in the meantime is a lot of long—range lobbying artillery and missile strikes and drones, hitting russia's rail lines, supply and fuel dumps, ammunition dumps, command and control centres to try and weaken russia's defences from behind, from within. so that when they do break through, russia will find it hard to plug those gaps. that is where roughly they have got to. you talk about ukraine's _ roughly they have got to. you talk about ukraine's counteroffensive, | about ukraine's counteroffensive, has this gone on longer than you think ukraine had hoped? the problem for ukraine, think ukraine had hoped? the problem for has, they - think ukraine had hoped? the problem for ukraine, yes, it has, they had - for ukraine, yes, it has, they had to wait a long time for advanced western equipment to arrive. the western equipment to arrive. the west has released piecemeal, bit by bit, there was an initial reluctance to give them powerful western battle tanks. the more atrocities they got reported, catalogued, that russian forces had carried out in various territories that they had occupied and tortured people, allegedly, the more those came to light, the more the west was willing to release this equipment. 0ne the west was willing to release this equipment. one of the things that the ukrainians really wanted for this offensive was a cover, f—i6s, they are relying on a few dozen old sorbet carer jets that they they are relying on a few dozen old sorbet carerjets that they have, it isn't military man is to attack a well dug in defence enemy position —— soviet—era jets. they are having to do that, they have no choice. the problem for them is that in two months* time we have something which is the muddy season, rainy season, where all advances will be difficult because it is just, where all advances will be difficult because it isjust, everything is cloying mud, favouring the defender. my cloying mud, favouring the defender. my guess is that we still see the grounding onto the winter into the spring come into next year*s us election year, which could be tricky for ukraine because they won*t necessarily get the same level of support that they have had from this administration in the white house. staying with the war in ukraine — the first ship to use ukraine*s humanitarian corridor to cross the black sea — has arrived safely in istanbul. kyiv announced the route after the termination of a deal with russia, which had allowed grain and other exports from both nations safe passage to the mediterrranean. the ship, thejoseph schulte, which is registered in hong kong, had been trapped in ukraine*s port of 0desa since the start of russia*s full—scale invasion. moscow has not indicated whether it will respect the corridor. this is bbc news. a planned strike at gatwick airport over the weekend which could have affected more than 40,000 passengers has been suspended. members of the unite union working for a ground handling company were due to walk out today, the company has proposed an improved pay offer, if members rejected a strike will go ahead over the bank holiday weekend. annual energy bills for a typical household will fall slightly from october. the consultancy firm predicts bills could drop by £114 and a new price cap due to be announced by 0fgem. the energy price cap limits how much suppliers can charge households for each unit of energy they use but bills remain higher than before russia*s invasion of ukraine. train drivers at more than a dozen train companies in the uk will strike on friday the 1st of september and refused to work overtime on the following day, according to the aslef union. the latest action in their long—running pay dispute follows a series of six—day overtime bans, which have caused widespread disruption and cancellations. in the north, it will be drier, variable amounts of cloud and some sunny spells, whereas in the south we*ve got two weather fronts coming our way. the first one already producing some heavy, thundery downpours. the second one coming in a bit later, introducing some heavy rain and strengthening winds. we have gusty winds today along the coast of wales, with exposure gusting as much as 60mph. so our first front fizzles through the afternoon, but the second one comes in from the south—west, producing some heavy downpours. temperatures today ranging from 15 to 23, but feeling humid in the south. the wind picking up across the isles of scilly and west cornwall. now, as we head on through the evening and overnight, this band of heavy rain continues to drift northwards and eastwards. we could have as much as 60 millimetres, in excess of two inches, in a short amount of time, accompanied by some hail. as it moves north, you can see how it curls back in through wales and northern ireland. it*s going to be windy through the irish sea and it*s going to be a very warm, oppressive night. these are our overnight lows. so we start saturday with that rain across the northern half of the country. it*s going to continue to push northwards. windy across the north of scotland, windy and wet in northern ireland. showers in western areas, but drier with some sunshine in central and eastern parts. in the sunshine it will feel quite pleasant. tomorrow is going to feel fresher than today where we*ve got the humidity. temperatures 16 to about 25 degrees. as we head on into sunday, a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of cloud out towards the west. we*ve got low pressure anchored to the north—west, so areas in the west are likely to catch some of the showers. some of them could align, as well. temperatures during the course of sunday, we*re looking at highs up to about 20 to 23, maybe up to 25, though, in the far south—eastern corner. as we move on into monday, monday also sees a lot of dry weather. a bit more cloud out towards the west, with some showers once again closest to that area of low pressure. blustery winds as well in the west and our temperature range 16 to about 25. then as we start the new working week, things remain fairly settled, especially the first half. it won*t be bone dry, but there will still be a fair bit of sunshine. this is bbc news. the
