on an australian defensive error eight minutes later to restore england's lead before alessia russo wrapped up the victory late on to make sure of their place in the final against spain. we achieved the final! and yet, it's unbelievable, it feels like we wanted but we didn't win it, but won this game. it's an incredible stadium, an away game! the way we played— of course it was a hard game, but again, we found a way to win. you're the first coach to take two different nations to a world cup final — how do you keep doing this? i world cup final - how do you keep doing this?— world cup final - i'll never take anything for granted, but like — i might like ina granted, but like — i might like in a fairy tale or something? those the thoughts of the manager, calling it a "fairy tale" to reach the final. what of the players on the pitch though? let's start with captain millie bright. on the set set a million times, and i'll continue saying it, the mentality of this group is something i've never seen before, and i think that comes from sarina wiegman, as well, in the belief she gives us but also we can play many different ways, that's the beauty of the squad. whatever an opponent throws at us, we adapt and find a way to win. and yet, just really proud the girls. imean, i mean, it's really hard right now— i mean, it's really hard right now but_ i mean, it's really hard right now but we just feel disappointed. i mean, looking up disappointed. i mean, looking up into— disappointed. i mean, looking up into the crowd, we had 75,000 _ up into the crowd, we had 75,000 people here and the lionesses set about making dreams become a reality. they say patience is a virtue. england fans have been a model of resolve. decades of deep breaths, of shoulda, woulda, coulda, but now, at the third time of asking, the final beckons. i feel like they are role models for so many young girls across the country. i feel like it's a really big achievement for the whole of the football community. we love you, ella, we do! oh, ella, we love you! ella toone has proved herself to be the player for the big occasion. for her family watching in manchester, herfirst—half goal gave england liftoff. commentator: ella toone! tooney! and from those just starting their footballing journey... england! ..to those who have been on an emotional roller—coaster with england, the final whistle was time for reflection. well, it's an historic moment already and obviously we are all so proud of what the lionesses have achieved so far. but i think it willjust continue that, it will continue to inspire young people, boys and girls up and down the country and hopefully boost further investment. england, european champions! since last summer, the trajectory of women's football has rocketed. fa figures show an explosion of under—16 girls in particular playing the game and audiences in the women's super league have tripled last season. yeah, it's incredible, - that's why we do what we do. especially to get as many young people inspired by football. - we are just out here doing - what we love and we just want as many people to do what they love too. . but the playing field is still far from level. the lionesses came into this tournament embroiled in an unresolved dispute over bonuses with the fa. nike refused to manufacture mary earps's shirt — something she described as hugely hurtful. and we only knew who would be broadcasting the games six weeks before the first match — something that damaged players' full earning potential. sunday's world cup final is a moment, it's a moment and everyone will then be trying to get on board but they have to get on board long—term. there are certain sponsors that have been involved in the game for many years and will now be reaping rewards and i think there will be lots of sponsors and lots of brands that are sitting there thinking, we left it too late. england didn't leave it late. even on a midweek morning, millions watched as they left the green and gold of australia feeling blue. and england are heading for the world cup final! more will surely tune in on sunday for the lionesses' great leap into the unknown. natalie pirks, bbc we are we a re really we are really pleased to have already won title in this season. really pleased for the club, and we have it. wejust missed one to hit full—circle, to have all the titles we can have. it happened in december when we went to saudi arabia to play there in the world cup. yeah, i would say really, really pleased. manchester united say they are working "through the final stages" of their internal investigation into the allegations made against mason greenwood having completed what they describe as the "fact—finding phase". charges against the 21—year—old — including attempted rape and assault — were dropped by the crown prosecution service at the beginning of february this year. he hasn't played for the club since january 2022. in a statement released today, the club said the "welfare and perspective" of the alleged victim has been "central" to their inquiries. they added they also have responsibilities to greenwood as a club employee. some transfer news now — because tottenham and lazio are in talks about the potential sale of goalkeeper hugo lloris. the former club captain's future has been under much scrutiny after he expressed a desire to leave earlier this winning 6—1, 6—0 over last year's australian open runner—up injust 59 minutes. what was supposed to be an amicable joint practice session ahead of the new nfl season turned sour between the baltimore ravens and the washington commanders. ravens wide receiver tylan wallace took a pass while under pressure from cornerback emmanuel forbes, who continued to try and retrieve the ball despite wallace of days, a change to something drier, brighter and warmer. and we're going to stick with warm and indeed quite humid conditions over the next couple of days. but on friday, it will turn windy, and some heavy thundery rain will arrive. thursday, though, is going to be quite a quiet day of weather. there'll be some areas of low cloud and mist first thing, tending to lift and clear, and then actually some lengthy spells of sunshine with just the small chance of catching a shower. a bit more of a breeze, though, and with that breeze coming from the east, where you're exposed to it along north sea coasts, temperatures may only get to between 17—20 celsius, but with some shelter from the breeze, parts of western scotland, the north coast of northern ireland up to 22—23 celsius, maybe 26 celsius for the west coast of wales and 27 celsius for parts of central southern england. now as we head through thursday night, we will see again some areas of low cloud developing. the winds will start to pick up across western parts, and we will see a few showers and thunderstorms just starting to break out. temperatures 12—16 celsius. as we get into friday, it is going to turn really quite windy around western coasts as this frontal system starts to squeeze its way in. the white line squashing together, that shows that we will have some quite strong winds. in fact, gusts potentially of 50 to possibly 60mph in exposed parts of north west wales. one band of heavy thundery rain pushing north eastwards, then a dryer gap, and then some more general heavy rain getting into the south west later in the day. depending on how quickly the rain arrives, it could again be very warm indeed, and it will certainly be very humid. now, friday night looks really wet as this frontal system drives its way northwards and eastwards, some heavy and thundery bursts of rain. close to the centre of this area of low pressure on saturday, we will also see some showers, particularly across northern ireland, western scotland, maybe some for western fringes of england and wales. further south and east, not as many showers. in fact, it should be largely dry, and, again, quite warm. temperatures up to around 25 celsius in the southeast corner, but 21 celisus for glasgow, 22 celsius in belfast. still mostly dry and fairly warm on sunday, just a few showers around. and then into the start of next week, towards the south of the uk, temperatures could climb a little further. welcome to newsday, reporting live from singapore, i'm monica miller. the headlines: north korea claims that the us
