Its been four weeks since he apparently evaded an order to fly back to the us, and made his way to the Demilitarised Zone which separates the two koreas before running to the northern side. Pyongyang has now claimed private king was driven to come to north korea because of inhuman maltreatment and Racial Discrimination while serving in the us army. And the State News Agency goes on to claim that private king has admitted to crossing illegally, and has asked for refuge in the north. It is the first time north korea has Knowledged Detaining the soldier. The claims have not been verified, and in a press briefing, the white house has urged people to be mindful of where the statement was made when considering its validity. We would caution everyone to consider the source here, that is incredibly important, as we are hearing the report. We cant verify the comments that are being attributed to private king, obviously. We remain focused on his safe return to him as we have been saying for these past several weeks, and we are breaking through all available channels to achieve that outcome. You know, none of it changes anything. We want to make sure that he gets home safely, that he returns to his family safely. And that is going to be our focus. The spokesperson for private kings family Jonathan Franks gave bbc news his reaction to the statement which was released by north korea. I dont know exactly what to make of that statement. Parts of it didnt make a lot of sense. And, you know, i would hesitate. I would caution folks against taking this at face value. The north koreans have a long history of trying to exploit racial privileges in the United States. And, you know, we not having heard from travis we dont know. We have not heard from him, and no reports on his condition, although the empathetic. Something about that statement suggested that perhaps, to me at least, that perhaps he was being not treated terribly, but we dont know. Yes, his mother is terribly concerned and, you know, she wants her son back. I dont know what he knew or what he thought at the time, because i never have got to speak to him, but certainly have imagined that all us troops operating in the rok, the republic of korea, south korea, are briefed on the dangers of their neighbour to the north. Our North America correspondent sean dilley tried to predict what happens next. I think the americans would like to try and find out the location and the welfare of private skin, because they the location and the welfare of private king, because they actually still dont know. You can read between the lines, not very subtly between the lines of this statement, the state Media Organisation from the north koreans, and they are talking about him confessing to illegally and deliberately crossing the border. So you can break it down and look at that which is saying that he shouldnt have done it. The second is that he did it because of racism and discrimination. Well, this comes at a time when the us and washington have been doubling down on criticism of north korea on human rights. There is some Political Capital there. What you can read into that is that the door, albeit a rather closed, is tightly open to some of those discussions. We do expect on thursday when the United Nations Security Council meets, not to be confused with the United States un, and, which controls the area he crossed over to, there is going to be some discussion about the eventual release. Now, what we will say at the moment, the condition obviously we dont know what it is, but assuming private king is released back to the United States, assuming that he heads back to the usa, he would still face the disciplinary action he had been due to face when he crossed into north korea on the 18th ofjuly. Above and beyond supporting his welfare, interviewing him about what has happened ultimately tables were turned and he would face disciplinary action indeed for making that crossing into north korea unless they were compelling reasons not to. Still to come a bit later in the programme the story of how a hong kong registered ship has finally left ukraine after being trapped in port by the war for 18 months. But first. We now know the line up for the final at the womens world cup and it will be england facing spain on sunday after they beat the co host australia in sydney. The game was a sell out and englands Lionesses Led at half time, thanks to this goalfrom ella tune. Australia equalised in the second half with a spectacular Long Distance shot from their star striker, sam kerr. At that point, it seemed to be anyones game, until england restored their lead when lauren hemp capitalised on a defensive lapse, and when this late effort from alessi russo went in, making the score three one with just a few minutes to go, it was too late for the matildas to come back. Heres what the players made of the game in the post match news c0 nfe re nces. 0h oh my god, what a feeling. Its an unbelievable achievement getting to a World Cup Final. Its every kids dream. Yeah, i mean, like i said, ive got no words. Im absolutely knackered right now. Got a few days to recover it but then we go again because we want to win this. Obviously now weve got so far, why not . What i said to the team in the huddle, i said, we promised each other to leave everything out there and every to leave everything out there and every Single Player did. And i think thats why the fans thanked them and supported them afterwards as well, because they see a team that leaves everything out there. Yes, we are disappointed we didnt win, but you also need to be proud of yourself when you leave everything out there, and they did. Well that spelled the end of the world cup journey for the matildas but for more analysis on the game and the australian team, lets go live now to sydney where im joined by steve georgakis, a senior lecturer in Sports Studies at the University Of Sydney. Looking at the i newspaper a celebratory photograph of englands wonder women. The mirror makes reference to the fact this is englands first football World Cup Final since 1966 the history girls. To the us now where President Joe Biden has annnounced he will head to fire ravaged hawaii next week to meet with survivors and First Responders still hunting for bodies. The number of dead has risen to 106. Mr bidens announcement comes as the island continues to grapple with the aftermath of the catastrophic blazes here, youre seeing the devastation in the Historic Town of la haina. Officials are anticipating a long and hard recovery effort. On tuesday, hawaiis Governorjosh Green reported that over a quarter of the burn area had been canvassed by Search And Rescue personnel. According to the states main utility provider, roughly 2,000 homes and businesses were still without power on top of an additional 2,000 structures that have already been destroyed. And the first victims of the 106 claimed by the wildfires have been identified. But so far only two families have been notified about the identities of those who have died. Eanne criswell, from the federal Emergency Management agency, described the Current Situation as active and dynamic. Now, i want to be honest with everyone. This is also going to be a very long and hard recovery, but our federal, state and local partners are working around the clock to help all of those who have been impacted by this disaster. We will be there to support them throughout this recovery process. I know when the president travels he will be able to bring hope and speak with the governor in the states first lady and talk to survivors and hear their stories. Its that level of hope that i think is going to be a really positive impact. 0ur North America correspondent John Sudworth sent us this update from hawaii. Theres been some criticism, of course, over the speed of the National Government response to this disaster. So it will be welcome news here on maui that the president and the first lady are coming here. Im in the community, we are some distance away from the devastated town, but nonetheless, you can see from these destroyed homes and businesses the power of the Weather Event that the fire crews were tackling that night. The same smoldering wildfire is fanned by the offshore hurricane, bringing destruction to this area as well. The real onerous task, of course, as well as the emotionally challenging work is going on down in the town, as the Forensic Experts continue to come to the wreckage there in the bid to discover the remains of more victims and to identify them. It is this work in the immediate Recovery Rector as well as whats happening down there that the president and the first lady will be able to see for themselves. To ukraine now, where theres been a Significant Development in the effort by ukraine to continue its exports across the black sea despite concerns that russia could target cargo ships. A Hong Kong Flagged Merchant Vessel succesfully left the ukrainian sea port of odesa on wednesday and does not appear to have come under any danger. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky called the ships movements a important step. With more on that heres our correspondent in kyiv, james waterhouse. There are also interesting developments at sea, where since the collapse of a major agreement last month which allowed ukraine to export grain through an agreed route through the black sea, then announce this humanitarian corridor without any kind of acknowledgement from russia, which has continued to target commercial vessels. And yet we have a cargo ship leave the port of odesa this morning. It had been trapped there since before the invasion and it is continuing to make its way south towards turkey. Now, there are some in the insurance and Shipping Industry that are rightfully nervous about this because russia enjoys quite a lot of dominance on the southern ukrainian coast. Its used its vessels to block ukrainian parts. Its used its vessels to block ukrainian ports. Yet, this vessel seems to have made its way through. More could follow but there is a big if here whether russia decides to leave these vessels alone. I think that is a big if because it is continuing to strike ukrainian ports with drone strikes. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Official figures show the rate of inflation in the uk fell to 6. 8 in the year tojuly. Thats down from 7. 9 injune. Britains chancellor, jeremy hunt, said the drop showed the governments plan for the economy was working but labour warned many families were still finding things difficult. A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into a major data breach at the Police Service of Northern Ireland. They have detained a 39 year old man on suspicion of collection of information likely to be useful to terrorists. The psni has apologised for mistakenly revealing details of all its 10,000 staff last week. Junior doctors in scotland have voted to accept a pay deal from the scottish government. It will see them earn an additional 17 over two years. It means scotland is the only part of the uk to avoid Strike Action by nhs workers. Youre live with bbc news. The two leading candidates running for us president have had rather difference experiences over the past 2a hours. Starting withjoe biden, who marked one year since his Inflation Reduction Act was enacted. He was upbeat describing the way it helped deal with The Cost Of Living In America as one of this most significant acts in the white house. When the middle class does well, all kidding aside, everybody does well. Everybody. The poor have a ladder up, the middle class have a good shot and the wealthy do very well. The Financial Times and the Wall Streetjournal called my plan bidenomics, im not sure they meant it in a totally complementary way at the time. But guess what . Its working. Meanwhile donald trump has been devoting more time to negotiating how he will surrender to the authorities in georgia where he faces a number of charges centred on alleged election interference. According to our us news partner, cbs, its likely he will travel to georgia next week with the deadline on friday the 25th of august. Also scheduled for next week on wednesday the 23rd the the first republican president ial primary debate in milwaukee, about a thousand miles away. Intrigue at the British Museum where a member of staff has been dismissed, and an independent Security Review has been set in motion after officials revealed that items from its collection were stolen, missing or damaged. The pieces include gold jewellery and Semi Precious gemstones dating back as far as 3,500 years. 0ur correspondent robin brant sent this update. This is one of the most visited Tourist Attractions in the country, and the British Museum is a globally renowned institution, but tonight, there is a room inside this building that for all intents and purposes is being treated as a crime scene. It was a page long statement from the British Museum that we gotjust a few hours ago that detailed what has happened. They discovered earlier this year, they said, that items among the collection were missing, stolen or damaged, and a member of staff has been dismissed. So what do we know about what has gone missing . Well, there are fairly small pieces that were kept inside a store room here and havent been on display to the public recently. They include gold jewellery, Gems Of Semiprecious Stones that date from the 15th century bc to the 19th century a d. , so some of these items could be up to three and half thousand years old. George osborne, former trey chancellor, now the chair of the British Museum here has described this as a sad day. He said their priority is to find out where these items are and try to get them back. It is a hugely embarrassing Security Breach for the British Museum. There are no end to priceless artefacts being cared for inside this building, but what is clear tonight is lots of things are unclear. They dont have a full inventory of what is missing, they dont know where the stuff is, they dont know how long its been going on for and they dont have a true value on what is missing. What we do know tonight, though, is that a member of staff has been sacked and the British Museum as well as the metropolitan police are investigating what they fear may have been in an insidejob. Lets turn to cambodia now which has been led by hun sen for decades with one of his main opponents in exile. Sam ramsey has been trying, unsuccessfully, to remove hun sen from office and is now facing the prospect of hun sens son taking over the reins of power from his father. Stephen sackur has been talking to sam ram see for our Hardtalk Programme heres a little of what he had to say. Youre not prepared to give hun manet s son, hun sen a chance . I think hun manet is a prisoner of the system. Remember what happened to syria in 2000 when Hafez Al Assad was replaced by his son, more educated and more open, presumably. People expect that, oh, there will be an improvement of the regime. Not at all. I mean, the americans are certainly hoping that because theyre very aware that he was educated in part at the military academy at west point. He also was educated in part in the united kingdom. What the west sees in hun manet, i think, is the possibility of a leader who is more open than his father. This is exactly what the west expected from bashar al assad. Actually, the son is worse than the father because the regime remains the same. Actually, the son is a prisoner of the system set up by the father. This is true in syria as well as in cambodia. Well, whether or not that message is getting through in capitals Like Washington and london, it certainly doesnt seem to be cutting any ice in the capital that arguably matters most when it comes to diplomacy. And that is beijing, because beijing has, it seems, an Iron Clad Alliance with hun sen and the current cambodian government. Nothing you say or do is going to change that, is it . Because the Strategic Alliance between hun sen and beijing is crucial to hun sen, is existential to hun sen and for china . China has decided to make cambodia a military stronghold, stronghold, an outpost. Stephen sackur speaking to the exiled cambodian Opposition Leader sam raimsy and you can see the full interview on our Hardtalk Programme here on bbc news just check the schedule for your region online. All this week on newsday, weve been bringing you a special series about the people we call game changers. The one thing they all have in common is that they have worked to improve the lives of communities who can sometimes struggle to fit into wider society. Earlier i spoke tojoshua tay the co founder and Deputy Executive Director of impart which is a Non Profit Organisation in singapore that helps youths who become too old to remain in government run facilities, to find their way into society. We work with a wide range of them, many of them with higher needs and risk circumstances. An interesting number of them have been increasingly socially reclusive. We have seen it spread across the world and in singapore also. When you say they isolate themselves like hermits, why do you the youth in singapore do this . What does the reasoning behind it when you speak to them . Monica, it really is an old problem with new legs. Part of what we see is that this problem has been in part of our life as a charity has been around. Its got a new wind with the pandemic and people are getting used to the reality that you can actually live at home for a long time. What we see is for many of these youth, there is a sense of hopelessness. There is a sense of social anxiety but also a Sense Of Social Enablement where their lives, whether its a permissive parents, that allows them to stay cooped up at home for various reasons. Has the online environment made it easierfor them to stay home . Oh, yeah. Definitely. Thats definitely a major part of it. Not so much the online environment, but the ease at which now are available online, whether its food delivery, your community, whether its modes of learning and interest gaming that you can find online. How prevalent is this behaviour . Yeah, we saw some of this already before the pandemic, but the pandemic really seemed to give it new legs, where we are getting a lot more anecdotal experience from schools, from institutions telling us that some of the youth are staying locked away for three or four years for a large part of their lives, really. Its increasingly challenging problem. That is all we have for you now. You can keep up with the days headlines by visiting our website. If you havent already, download our app. Website. If you havent already, download ourapp. Im met monica miller. Thanks for watching our programme. Im monica miller. Hello. Weve seen a change in the weather over the last couple of days, a change to something drier, brighter and warmer. And were going to stick with warm and indeed quite humid conditions over the next couple of days. But on friday, it will turn windy, and some heavy Thundery Rain will arrive. Thursday, though, is going to be quite a quiet day of weather. Therell be some areas of low cloud and mist first thing, tending to lift and clear, and then actually some lengthy spells of sunshine with just the small chance of catching a shower. A bit more of a breeze, though, and with that breeze coming from the east, where youre exposed to it along north sea coasts, temperatures may only get to between 17 20 celsius, but with some shelter from the breeze, parts of western scotland, the north coast of Northern Ireland up to 22 23 celsius, maybe 26 celsius for the west coast of wales and 27 celsius for parts of central southern england. Now as we head through thursday night, we will see again some areas of low cloud developing. The winds will start to pick up across western parts, and we will see a few showers and thunderstorms just starting to break out. Temperatures 12 16 celsius. As we get into friday, it is going to turn really quite windy around western coasts as this Frontal System starts to squeeze its way in. The white Line Squashing together, that shows that we will have some quite strong winds. In fact, gusts potentially of 50 to possibly 60mph in exposed parts of north west wales. One band of heavy Thundery Rain pushing north eastwards, then a dryer gap, and then some more general heavy rain getting into the south west later in the day. Depending on how quickly the rain arrives, it could again be very warm indeed, and it will certainly be very humid. Now, friday night looks really wet as this Frontal System drives its way northwards and eastwards, some heavy and thundery bursts of rain. Close to the centre of this area of low pressure on saturday, we will also see some showers, particularly across Northern Ireland, western scotland, maybe some for western fringes of england and wales. Further south and east, not as many showers. In fact, it should be largely dry, and, again, quite warm. Temperatures up to around 25 celsius in the southeast corner, but 21 celisus for glasgow, 22 celsius in belfast. Still mostly dry and fairly warm on sunday, just a few showers around. And then into the start of next week, towards the south of the uk, temperatures could climb a little further. Retail giant target becomes the latest casualty in americas culture wars. Plus, have you heard about clean air zones . Well, theyre opening all over england, but opinions about them remain divided. Hello, and welcome to Asia Business report. Im monica miller. We begin with the Quarterly Earnings of us retail giant target, which has become the latest corporate victim of americas culture wars. The company saw sales fall in store and online for the first time in years, after a backlash over its pride month offering.
