Staying with north london news where tottenham and lazio are in talks about the potential sale of goalkeeper hugo lloris. The former Club Captains future has been under much scrutiny after he expressed a desire to leave earlier this summer. He was left out of the clubs Pre Season Tours and the 2 2 draw against brentford which opened spurs premier League Campaign last weekend. Lloris still has one year left on his contract so tottenham would be entitled to a transfer fee. Harry maguires potential move from Manchester United to west ham is off though. The defender is now intent on staying and fighting for a place in the starting eleven. He was stripped of the captaincy before the start of this season after finding fewer playing opportunities. Last seasons treble winners Manchester City will look to add yet another trophy to their collection later when they take on sevilla in the super cup in athens. Each season this fixture sees the Champions League holders face the Europa League winners. We are here with the field, we are hungry enough to compete and especially to challenge ourselves to prove ourselves. If someone wants to take our three crowns, hopefully they can fight against us to take it, so we are still going to defend this season. More on that story across the bbc sport website. I will be back later. A shortfall in the rate of inflation. Prices are still increasing. The rate at which prices rise has dropped to 6. 8 in the year july. That is down 7. 9 injune. Last october the figure was ii. I . The drop was driven by lower prices for things like electricity and gas. But there are some things which are still rising at a rapid rate like the cost of a flight, which is up by almost 30 in the year on year comparison. Our chief economics correspondent, Dharshini David has more. It is the case that inflation has slowed quite considerably and the latest month. Its largely down to the fact that Energy Prices are quite as tight as they were because of the way that a is put in the uk. Just to correct, it still the case that houses up and down the country will be feeling the pain because wages arent overtaking inflation just as yet. It may be the case next month, we may find out theres a Turning Point for the at theres a Turning Point for the at the moment many households are going to be feeling the pain. A lot of thatis to be feeling the pain. A lot of that is coming through food prices because even though that rate has lowered what we are seeing is food prices still on average still 15 up from where they were a year ago. Still the case that costs are rising for manufacturers of food for that that means they will pass it on to customers. Its notjust about that. Weve also got whats called services inflation. The likes of hotels, restaurants putting up their prices by as much as 10 . Part of thatis prices by as much as 10 . Part of that is to do with a straight picture in the uk of some who find it hard to make ends meet as those basics get more expensive. Some have got savings stashed away for the pandemic time or perhaps bigger wage risers that he could use to finance spending on Like Services for as with the Bank Of England looks at closely and thats why it is expected they can raise rates once again come september. It does take mum to take it take up to two years but changing Interest Rates the fleet inflation. What we are seeing at the moment is the fact that inflation and has been stubborn in the uk, much more so than in many other countries france, germany, the us. We are looking at a picture here with the Bank Of England is having to engineer quite deliberately a slowdown in consumer spending. It does not by pushing up Interest Rates. Over half of households with the mortgage wouldve felt the pain from higher Interest Rates and many hundreds of thousands more will feel it in the coming months. Bringing you breaking a member of staff has been dismissed and the Metropolitan Police are now investigating after a number of items from the British Museum collection were found to be missing, stolen or damaged. We do have a statement thats coming to us from the British Museum. It says its launched an independent review of security of the items from the collection were found to be missing, stolen or damaged. A member of staff has been dismissed and the museum will now be taking legal action against that individual. The matter is also under investigation by the Economic Crime command of londons Metropolitan Police. It sounds like its quite serious. In independent review will be led by former trustee and the Chief Constable of the british transport police. They will look into the matter. Says they will also kick start and support a vigorous programme to recover the missing items. Everyone wants to know what might the missing items speed. The statement says they were small pieces kept in a storeroom belonging to one of the museums collections. They demand jewellery and jam and semi precious stones and glass dating from 15th century bc to 19th century ad. Jams. Not have been on public display and they were primarily for Academic Research purposes. A statement from the chair of the British Museum says the trustees were extremely concerned when we learned earlier this year that items of the collection had been stolen. They dealt with the situation working with the team at the museum but according to police and imposing Emergency Measures to increase security. There you have it. A member of staff dismissed and the met police are investigating after a number of items from the British Museum were missing, stolen or damaged. The jury in the trial of nurse lucy letby has been continuing its deliberations at Manchester Crown court. Ms letby is accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill 10 others at the countess of chester hospital, Betweenjune 2015 and june 2016. She denies all the charges. Lucy grey has sent this update from Manchester Crown court. The jury have been deliberating for more than 100 hours at Manchester Crown court. Last week the judge gave them a majority direction, meaning he would accept verdicts if ten out of 11 jurors were agreed. There has been a lot of evidence for them to talk through. The trial has been going on ten months now and they were given ipads at the start of the trial because they knew there would be so much evidence for them to sift through, thousands and thousands of pages of evidence. Lucy letby, a 33 year old nurse originally from hereford is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder ten others during her time on the Neonatal Unit at the countess of chester hospital. The time referred to is Betweenjune 2015 and june 2016. The Neonatal Unit is where babies would be taken if they were sick or premature, they would go there soon after birth. It is the prosecutions case, they claim she attacked these babies in a variety of ways, by injecting them with insulin, using that as a poison, or injecting them with air, by overfeeding them, or by tampering with their Feeding Tubes or in some cases by inflicting physical trauma. They said the one thing that links these instances, these deaths and near fatal collapses, was that lucy letby was on shift at the time. Lucy letby denied all the charges against her. She was in court for 1h days giving evidence. Her defence is that this could have happened through natural occurrences. She also talked about the Neonatal Unit saying it was overstretched and understaffed. She talked about serious failings in the unit itself. Her parents, lucy letby s parents have been in court throughout the case over the last ten months, and also the families of the 17 babies have been here. They have been in court here in manchester but have also been able to watch remotely. They have sat through the harrowing details over the last ten months and now they wait for those verdicts to come back. The uk formerjustice secretary, sir robert buckland, hasjoined calls for a Public Inquiry into the case of a man who spent 17 years in prison for a rape he did not commit. Andy malkinson had his conviction quashed last month. It has since emerged the police and prosecutors both had dna evidence that may have exonerated him five years into his sentence. Joe inwood reports. When Andy Malkinson walked out of court last month, he was finally free. I am not a liar. I am not in denial. But i will tell you who is. He was also furious with the police force responsible for his wrongful conviction. Greater Manchester Police are liars and they are in denial. In 2004, he was convicted of a violent rape, purely on the basis of witness identification. There was no dna linking Andy Malkinson to the scene of the crime, but there was the dna of another unknown man on a piece of clothing. The files seen by the bbc reveal that as far back as 2009, greater Manchester Police knew this, as Andy Malkinson told bbc newsnight. I could have been out eight years before i was, yeah. If someone had just looked at that match on the database, if someone had trawled the database. If, well, i have to say, the ccrc had the opportunity back in 2010. They failed. The ccrc is the criminal case review commission, the body tasked with investigating miscarriages ofjustice. In 2012, they turned down his request for an appeal. Its thought cost was a factor. Completely dropped the ball. And the human cost of that for andy, for his family. But also, lets not forget for the victim, who 20 years later is being retraumatized by all this having to come up again as part of andys fight to have the truth come out. All of that could have been spared if the commission had done theirjob properly. They need to apologize. They need to do a full internal investigation and find out what went wrong. Theyre not doing so. And for that reason, their chairs position is untenable. She needs to resign. For andy, the whole system needs reform. The Justice System in the uk, england, is a big mess. Theres no accountability to the police. To the cps. The ccrc is ineffective. If it looks like justice is being done, then thats good enough for them. They dont care about the integrity of the convictions. Both police and prosecutors have previously apologized to Andy Malkinson, while the cps said they did disclose the evidence to his lawyers. The ccrc have been approached for comment. Andy malkinson finally has freedom, but its come at a terrible price. It seems if the system had worked, it could also have come much sooner. Joe inwood, bbc news. Two former Royal Marines have described being shot at by pirates while attempting to navigate the amazon in a world record attempt. Alexandra mackenzie reports. Yan and i. A couple of lads came up to us. This was filmed after the attack. John bathgate from edinburgh was shot twice but fought back. Capsized their boat, got their weapon. John and ian, known as yan, from devon, made it to safety in a nearby village. Lovely community here helped us out, managed to send messages to the navy and to our friends in akita, so hopefully theyll arrive soon. Medics did arrive and treated the pair after their frightening ordeal both lucky not to have been more seriously injured. Their plan had been to navigate the amazon river and attempt to travel more than 3,000 miles from ecuador to brazil. But they were attacked while canoeing in peru. What id like to get through to people is this doesnt define peru. These were two individuals who probably due to lack of options, not having much and seeing, you know, us rich westerners going by with all this equipment. It doesnt excuse what they did, but their actions dont define the people of peru. And john, from his home in edinburgh, is already talking about returning to the amazon as soon as he is able. Alexandra mackenzie, bbc news. World war two aerial photographs of england are available for the public to view for the first time. Historic england archive released the images taken by Us Army Air Forces between 1943 and 191m and offer a bird eye view of england. Over 3600 pictures capture airfields with american bombers and baseball a bird eye view of england. I asked Katy Whitaker from the Historic England archive to talk me through her favourite images. The United States Army Air Force moved into england partway through the Second World War when america joined the war and their pilots who specialised in Photo Reconnaissance needed to practice their Navigation Skills and the photography, learning how to operate cameras from their cockpits. So they flew to various locations in england and took a number of photographs, 20,000 of which are cared for by the Historic England archive, with conserved and digitised and put online for people to enjoy. Casey, why did they take all these photos . They were practising for the jobs that they had to do over germany and the occupied territories in the Second World War. And the best way to do that was to have locations around england that they could be tasked to fly to so thats how they could practice the navigation, and then to make sure that the Camera Set Up was working and they could successfully capture photographs of the correct locations, they would take the photographs, bring them back to their bases in oxfordshire, have those photographs developed and that provided the evidence for them to learn from, have they navigated to the right locations7 had the cameras worked, had they taken good photographs7 they went to germany, and across france, to take photographs of strategic and tactical locations during the war. Its a cover of pink floyd with a big difference scientists have reconstructed the Classic Rock Track Another Brick In The Wall using brainwaves. Its hoped this breathrough could to help people with Neurological Damage to communicate. So is this mind reading7 lets take a listen. Song plays. Lets hear now from one of the experts who carried out this study neuroscientists ludovic bellier. I asked him what exactly hed done to get that recording in the first place. We recorded some data in patients with intracranial electrodes to locate the origin of the epilepsies and why they were in the hospital beds waiting to get seizures. We offered them to volunteer in research and recorded their Neural Activity while they were recording the songs. Another brick in the wall part one. Then we analysed the data with Machine Learning models in order to train, decode and reconstruct the song from the Neural Activity. So basically, Artificial Intelligence was used for this . Absolutely. Yeah. And tell us what the purpose of this is. How can this advance medical science . Yes, thats a great question. There are kind of two goals. One is more fundamental science and neuroscience, understanding better how the brain perceives music, which is a core part of our everyday lives as human beings, but also by understanding better that we can then target some areas and types of Neural Activity to like train better speech decoders. And thats really what could pave the way towards more naturalistic sounding Speech Decoding devices in patients with impaired communication. 0k. Question a lot of people might have is why pink floyd . Oh, thats a very simple answer, because everyone loves pink floyd. We kind of try to track them while our colleagues at the albini Medical Center use that song. And that was really the simple answer they could give us. So this was conducted with 29 patients. I was reading somewhere that there have also been experiments using Brain Activity to turn that into text. Some people say this is all about reading peoples minds and while it has medical benefits, theres also people that are a little bit terrified by that. Oh, thats completely understandable. And id love to say that right now the technology is more like a keyboard for the mind, in that its a device you need to actually think actively about sounds, about speech, for instance, in order to get that decoded. So its not like a keyboard. You cant read your mind with a keyboard. You need to type on the keys to get your ideas through. That is the same thing here. On top of that, it only works so far with intracranial electrodes. E bikes and e scooters have grown in popularity in recent years. Now London Fire Brigade say so too has the number of fires associated with them. They say its because many owners are using badly built chargers and batteries to recharge the vehicles and thats causing a fire every two days in the capital. Theyre now calling for more Government Regulation as tom edwards reports this ebike is charging. At first theres smoke and then this. The owner manages to escape. But these types of Battery Fires are increasing, and theyve caused three deaths this year in london. Were really concerned this is our Fastest Growing fire trend. Were having a fire on average once every two days. Jazz converts bikes for £700. A bike has a battery and a motor added. His conversions are safe. The big problem, he says, are poorly made batteries and people using the wrong charges. If the battery has any physical damage or particularly penetration injury, then that battery should be scrapped immediately. The second thing is to make sure that youre using the original charger that has the same Voltage Rating as the battery. Sofia lost her life in a battery fire. A bike, not hers. Caught fire in the hallway and she couldnt escape. Herfriends now want much more to be done. At the moment, theres little regulation. So they have to stop that completely. Completely. For me, the e bikes that are adopted should not should not be accepted. It should completely be banned. The latest data from the London Fire Brigade shows faulty e bike conversion kits carry a higher risk of fire. Nearly 40 of fires this year are from conversions, although it could be much higher. And they also found many of the e bikes and scooters being charged in homes blocked escape routes. Batteries On E Scooters can also ignite. This is one on fire being thrown from a tube train. Most operators have now banned them. What we can see is the battery pack has failed and youve had a really rapid fire thats literally burnt through the metal there, melted it away. The London Fire Brigade is being called out to a battery fire every two days, 110 this year, and its increasing rapidly. They want much tougher regulation, whether youre online or in the high street. Buy from a reputable seller. Thats absolutely essential. If you buy from an online marketplace or auction house, you could be buying something from the other side of the world that does not meet safety standards. As e scooters and e bikes increase in popularity, so does the danger of these fires. Without action, experts fear these fires will become much more of a hazard. Tom edwards, bbc, london. Thats it for us here at verified live. To stay with us here on bbc news. Hello there, good afternoon. Lots of dry and sunny weather right across the uk today, particularly for southern counties of northern ireland, england and wales. Blue skies, sunflower fields, as captured by our Weather Watcher in norfolk. A bit of fair weather cloud bubbling up in powys. As we head through the rest of the week, although it is looking wet and windy on friday, there will be lots of dry weather, some sunny spells and it will turn warmer and more humid, especially by night. But for the rest of this afternoon, we will keep the sunshine for most areas, i wouldnt rule out a shower breaking out just about anywhere, but they are more likely across Northern Areas of scotland, possibly heavy in places it is cloudier here and temperatures will be lower. But elsewhere creeping into the low to mid 20s celsius, 26 celsius possible in south east england. Overnight tonight, any showers we see will fade away to leave us with a dry night, long clear spells, mist, murk, Low Cloud Gathering towards central areas, perhaps into tomorrow morning, but its a mild start to the day on thursday yet again. On thursday morning any mist and murk, low cloud will gradually lift and clear through the morning, burnt back by the sunshine. We draw in more of a south easterly wind, just feeding this warm, humid air our way from the near continent. The highest temperatures perhaps for Western Areas of wales. Those temperatures a little lower towards north sea facing coasts with the onshore breeze. But again, were expecting the mid 20s for many spots. And then on friday, we look out towards the atlantic where we have a deep area of low pressure. It will be pulling in all of these weatherfronts, merging together at times to form longer spells of rain. There will be some heavy thundery downpours, very windy conditions too across Northern Areas of wales, but we do keep that mild, very muggy feeling air, and temperatures pretty much across the board will be in the low 20s in celsius. It stays dry in Northern Scotland until we get to friday night, into saturday, and then that system clears off into scandinavia, so still some rain on saturday morning for Northern Areas of scotland. Elsewhere, though, it should be largely dry, some showers feeding into the west perhaps, as we go through the afternoon. It will feel fresher on saturday, but the air is still warm, temperatures in the low to the mid 20s once more in celsius. Here is the outlook for our capital cities, as we head through the weekend and into next week, dry and warm in the south east, still warm, but more showery in the north and west. Its toone 0h latched on to this one. Hemp what a pass that is. Its russo screams englands lionesses make history with three heart stopping goals propelling them into their first world cup final. One team now stands between england and the World Cup Trophy that is spain, who they play in the final on sunday. Bursting with joy but this pride of lionesses is focused on the top prize. Ever since i was a young girl, ive dreamed about a world cup. But you always dream about winning it. And to have the chance to do that this weekend is something, yeah, its what weve all worked really hard for. Australia came to a Standstill Heard Brake on home soil.
