The rate at which prices rise dropped to 6. 8 in the year tojuly . Thats down from 7. 9 injune. Its partly because food price increases have been slowing down and also because of a fall in energy costs. Inflation hit a peak of 11. 1 in october last year, but now wages are rising higher than prices. Our Chief Economics correspondent Dharshini David has more. It is the case as you say, that inflation has slowed considerably in the latest month and it is largely down to the fact that Energy Prices arent quite as high as they were, because of the way that a cap is put on them here in the uk, but, just to correct, it is still the case, however, that households up and down the country will be feeling the pain because wages arent overtaking inflation just as yet. It may be the case next month we find out there has been that turning point, but as it is many households are going to be feeling the pain still and a lot is coming through food prices, because even though that rate has slowed, what we are seeing is food prices still on average 15 up on where we were a year ago. It is still the case that some costs are rising for manufacturers of food and that means that they are trying to pass those on to customers but it is notjust about that, we have also got what is called services inflation, so the likes of hotels, restaurants, putting up prices by as much as io . And part of that is to do with this very strange picture we are getting in the uk of there are some who are finding it really hard to make ends meet as the basics get more expensive but some have savings stashed away from the pandemic or bigger wage rises they can use to finance spending on things like services, we call them, that is what the Bank Of England looks at closely, and that is why it is expected they are going to raise rates once again, come september. That is what i was going to come on to next. What this might mean for Interest Rates, whether we might see another hike coming up. It certainly looks like that way, as i was saying its the case that inflation is pretty strong, it is more than three times as high as the Bank Of England target. Now it does take months and it can take up to two years for a change in Interest Rates to feed through to inflation, and that is true of most countries but what we are seeing at the moment is the fact that inflation has been stubborn in the uk, much more so than in other countries, so we are looking at a picture where the Bank Of England is having to engineer deliberately a slow down in consumer spending, and it does that by pushing up the interest rate, half of households with a mortgage will have felt that pain, so many hundreds of thousands more who will feel it in the coming months so getting inflation down does come as a significant price, that is for those households who are borrowers. The trial has been going on ten months now and they were given ipads at the start of the trial because they knew there would be so much evidence for them to sift through, thousands and thousands of pages of evidence. Lucy letby, a 33 year old nurse originally from hereford is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder ten others during her time on the Neonatal Unit at the countess of Chester Hospital. The time referred to is betweenjune 2015 and june 2016. The Neonatal Unit is where babies would be taken if they were sick or premature, they would go there soon after birth. It is the prosecutions case, they claim she attacked these babies in a variety of ways, by injecting them with insulin, using that as a poison, or injecting them with air, by overfeeding them, or by tampering with their Feeding Tubes or in some cases by inflicting physical trauma. They said the one thing that links these instances, these deaths and near fatal collapses, was that lucy letby was on shift at the time. Lucy letby was on shift at the time. Lucy letby denied all the charges against her. She was in court for 1h days giving evidence. Her defence is that this could have happened through natural occurrences. She also talked about the Neonatal Unit saying it was overstretched and understaffed. She talked about serious failings in the unit itself. They have been in court here in manchester but have also been able to watch remotely. A bbc investigation has heard from ukrainian Prisoners Of War who say they were subjected to torture, including frequent beatings and electric shocks, while held in russia. They were taken to a Detention Facility in the Southern Russian city of taganrog before being released in exchanges. We can speak to hugo bachega in our newsroom who worked on that investigation. Tell us about the testimony you have been hearing from people held as Prisoners Of War. I spent weeks in Ukraine Tracking Down Ukrainians who had been taken to this facility. What they describe is a situation of extreme abuse, psychological abuse, physical abuse. They say captives are tortured, given electric shocks, frequent beatings. There is no health care provided, Food Portions are very small. So you have a situation where prisoners are said to have been dying in this facility because of this level of abuse. We interviewed a dozen former captives and i think what really struck me was what they described was that this wasnt something done by a handful of bad guys or by a guard who had an argument at home and decided to torture somebody. They said this was routine, this was the Modus Operandi in this facility. Keep in mind that no International Observers have been allowed into this facility. The United Nations and red cross have been trying to visit this facility to see the conditions there but russian authorities have not allowed them to enter this facility in the south of the country. He said there is nothing he can do, really, because all these facilities are now under russian control and no International Observers have been allowed to get to those facilities and talk to those Prisoners Of War and talk to those Prisoners Of War and actually see for themselves the conditions these people are facing. Fresh questions have been raised in the case of Andy Malkinson . The man who spent 17 years in prison for a rape he didnt commit. Documents show the real attacker could potentially have been identified just three years after mr malkinson was jailed. Its emerged police and prosecutors knew back in 2007 that another mans dna was on the clothes of the woman mr malkinson was wrongly imprisoned for raping, yet his conviction was quashed only last month. Joe inwood reports. When Andy Malkinson walked out of court last month, he was finally free. I am not a liar. I am not in denial. But i will tell you who is. He was also furious with the police. In 2004, he was convicted of a violent rape purely on the basis of witness identification. There was no dna linking Andy Malkinson to the scene of the crime. But there was the dna of another unknown man on a piece of clothing. The files seen by the bbc reveal that as far back as 2009, greater Manchester Police knew this, as Andy Malkinson told bbc newsnight. I could have been out eight years before i was, yeah. If someone had just looked at that match on the database, if someone had trolled the database . Yes, i have to say, the cclc had the opportunity back in 2010. They failed. The ccrc is the criminal case review commission, the body tasked with investigating miscarriages ofjustice. In 2012, they turned down his request for an appeal. It is thought cost was a factor. They completely dropped i the ball and the human cost for andy and his family, but lets not forget the victim, who, 20 years later is being re traumatised by all this having to come up again as part of andys ifight to have the truth come out, | all of that could have been spared if the commission had done theirjob properly. They need to apologise and do a full internal investigation to find out what went wrong. They are not doing so and for that reason their chairs position is untenable and she needs to resign. For andy, the whole system needs reform. The Justice System in the uk, england, is a big mess. There is no accountability to the police. To the cps. And the ccrc is ineffective. If it looks likejustice is being done, then that is good enough for them. They dont care about the integrity of the convictions. Both police and prosecutors have previously apologised to Andy Malkinson, while the cps said they did disclose the evidence to his lawyers. The ccrc have been approached for comment. It was a bit of a shock when tracey asked me to be the skipper of maiden but i was honoured she let me look after her baby and take it around the world and very excited to be able to skipper an ocean race for the first time. Six years ago tracey rescued her beloved boat from the scrap heap in the indian ocean. Fully restored, she now sails the world as a floating showcase to promote and support education for girls. Her crew for the race is international. So after six years of travelling round the world and covering 77,000 miles, spreading that vital message about education for girls, maiden is about to get back to what she was born to do, she is getting back to racing. The race rules mean they cant use this modern equipment to navigate, they will plot their course using compass bearings, sextants and the stars, as sailors have done since man and woman first set sail.
