we're coming on the air night with breaking news in georgia's investigation into alleged interference in the 2020 presidential election... now unlike the other three criminal cases mr trump faces, in the new case cameras were allowed in court to see the moment the judge in fulton county approved the grand jury*s decision to indict mrtrump. you can see the official handing over the big stack of papers. so, let's take a closer look at the indictment. it's 97 pages long and includes the 41 counts faced by mr trump, and 18 others. it also includes evidence such as mr trump's tweets. the former president has been charged with attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat in georgia. he is facing 13 of the 41 charges. the 18 other people indicted includes people who were very close to mr trump in 2020. amongst them, former trump lawyer rudy giuliani seen here on the left, with former white house chief of staff mark meadows on the right. there's also former white house lawyerjohn eastman, and a formerjustice department official, jeffrey clark, who you can see here on the right. among the allegations is a violation of georgia's rico act. that's a powerful law passed in 1970 originally used to target organised crime. it's punishable by a maximum 20 years in prison. the head prosecutor is fulton county attorney general — fani willis. through participation in a criminal enterprise in fulton county georgia and elsewhere to accomplish the illegal goal of allowing donald trump to thieve the presidential term of office beginning onjanuary 2021. term of office beginning on january 2021. ., , ., , 2021. so, donald trump and his alleaed 2021. so, donald trump and his alleged accomplices _ 2021. so, donald trump and his alleged accomplices are - 2021. so, donald trump and his| alleged accomplices are accused 2021. so, donald trump and his i alleged accomplices are accused of taking part in an illegal effort to seize the presidential term of office. the indictment alleges that other than abide by georgia's legal process for election challenges, the defendants engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise to overturn georgia's presidential election result. subsequent to the indictment, as is the normal process in georgia law, the grand jury issued arrest warrants for those who were charged. i am giving the defendants the opportunity to voluntarily surrender no later than noon on friday the 25th day of august, 2023. the investigation into the group, who as fani willis said have until august the 25th to surrender, was launched after a leaked recording of a 67—minute phone call between mr trump and georgia's top election official secretary of state, brad raffensperger. during the call, mr trump lobbied mr raffensberger to overturn the state's election results, citing debunked claims of election fraud. let's run through extracts of that call, starting with unsupported claims from the former president, about suitcases full of ballots. the president also made claims about so—called dead voters. brad raffensperger did resist some of what mr trump had to say. here are some further extracts. and in one of the most pointed exchanges, mr trump spelled out how many votes he needed. well, it won't come as any surprise that a couple of hours after the latest charges were made public in georgia donald trump took to his truth social network. he denied and condemned the allegations. he said the witch hunt against him continued and appeared to suggest the charges were politically motivated. he posted... "why didn t they indict 2.5 years ago? because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign. witch hunt!" another person charged was mr trump's former lawyer rudy giuliani. here's his reaction. in a statement to cbs news the former new york mayor called the charges an "affront to american democracy". he went on to say the indictment "does permanent, irrevocable harm" to the justice system, describing it as "just the next chapter in a book of lies" to frame mr trump. he added... "the real criminals here are the people who have brought this case forward both directly and indirectly." as we have said this is the fourth separate criminal case donald trump faces. in all he is now facing a total of 91 charges. as well as the 13 were have been talking about in georgia. he also faces four more over election interference stemming from his actions around the january 6th capitol riots. in sheer number terms the most criminal charges mr trump is facing is a0 — they come from the classified documents cases. you'll remember thousands of documents were seized from his florida estate last year, including about 100 marked as classified. the fourth case is known as the new york hush money case — where there are 3a felony counts. the charges stem from a hush money payment made before the 2016 election to the adult film star stormy daniels. there is so much to talk about. let's talk to professor natasha lindstaedt from the university of essex. we were expecting this indictment, but given ijust ran through the other three, but given ijust ran through the otherthree, it but given ijust ran through the other three, it is this one and georgia that could be the most damaging so far? this georgia that could be the most damaging so far?— georgia that could be the most damaging so far? this georgia case is the most — damaging so far? this georgia case is the most dangerous _ damaging so far? this georgia case is the most dangerous for - damaging so far? this georgia case is the most dangerous for donald . is the most dangerous for donald trump for a is the most dangerous for donald trumpfora number of is the most dangerous for donald trump for a number of reasons. they are basically accusing him of orchestrating a criminal enterprise, and this is astounding, that a former president is being accused of this. they were using state racketeering laws, as you mentioned, that are designed to target organised crime to go after him because of the conspiracy that has been taking place to undermine the election, and in this state—level case, donald trump cannot pardon himself if he is elected president, and the georgia prosecutors would not report to him. so he doesn't have that cushion that he might have with the federal charges, that he might somehow figure out a way to win the election, pardon himself and then modernise the justice system in his favour. he faces some real serious charges hit, and this is an expansive case. the district attorney took a lot of time and energy to figure out and interview all of the people they needed to interview, and they list 161 separate acts that he apparently violated, or he is accused of violating, to overturn a democratic election. a huge pressure campaign on the election workers, harassing state officials, lying to state officials, lying to the state legislator. the list goes on and on. and a cover—up. so this is serious for donald trump and it is definitely an unprecedented challenge from a local prosecutor. we should make it clear that none of these indictment so far, the committal proceedings that are about to follow, stop former president trump from standing for election again. trump from standing for election aaain. . * , trump from standing for election aaain. ., * , , again. that's right. there is nothina again. that's right. there is nothing in _ again. you have been accused fourth a felony, or have committed a felony. you can carry on and run for office and we have some historical precedent for that. but we have never had such a key candidate running for president, who is likely to win the nomination will stop he is polling 53% among republicans. his next greatest challenge is ron desantis, and he is deftly going to win the nomination. he has a series of court cases taking place. before that we just mentioned, and they are going to likely transpire at the same time that he is campaigning. just the georgia primary, which is likely to take place in the middle of march, that's exactly when the georgia case is likely to happen, about six months from now. he is likely to happen, about six months from now.— is likely to happen, about oxygen from the room in terms of the oxygen from the room in terms of the other candidates, taking up all the other candidates, taking up all the headlines, and that is set to continue as well. you have already said we have to presume that he is going to be the nominee, but what is yoursense going to be the nominee, but what is your sense about how many americans, particularly undecided voters, are responding? i'm thinking of women as well, the undecided voters, and how they are responding to all of this. it's a good question. we know that the republican base is responding as you would expect because they are completely transfixed by donald trump, and all of his campaigning is not about the issues, it's not about health care, it not about the economy, it's not about gun control, the environment, these types of things. he is only really talking about him as the world's biggest victim. how well is that going to play with the average american voter, or with independent or undecided voters? thus far it doesn't look like it will play that well. he will have to pivot when it gets to the national election if he wants a chance to win. i don't know if he is capable of doing that. natasha, thank you so much for joining us. i'm sure if the next period of time we will talk to you again. now to our other major news this hour. a bbc investigation has revealed that three suspected hundreds of firefighters battled to control the fire. many of those who were injured have been flown to moscow for treatment. our moscow correspondent, will vernon, gave us this update a little earlier. deadly fires and explosions are a very common occurrence in russia, this kind of thing happens almost every day, but the death toll here was particularly high and that's probably because the area around that petrol station was packed with cars last night at around 9.30pm local time when the exposing happened. —— explosion. videos provided by the emergencies ministry and also posted on social media show people screaming, running, a huge inferno that took around four hours for firefighters to bring under control. president putin has expressed his condolences to the victims and the women's football world cup, beating sweden 2—1. in a dramatic semi final in auckland, all three goals came towards the end of the second half in the 81st, 88th, and in the 89th minute. spain's olga carmona scored the winner. they'll now face either england or australia in the final on sunday. let's talk to shaimaa khalil in sydney. what a finish to this match. i mean, the drama, the excitement, the crazy, memorable football moments. this women's world cup keeps delivering, and that spain— sweden game was no exception. it took about 80 minutes for this game took about 80 minutes for this game to come to life. the two sides were level, it was frustrating for them sometimes. they played like we expected them to play. spain with so much possession, but it did not translate into goals. sweden with very solid defence, and of course the wall of a goalkeeper. and then there is nine minutes of the second half it felt like a completely different game. we had one goalfrom spain, and then an equaliser from sweden. within a minute, we had that winning goalfrom olga carmona. it was mayhem. it was mayhem in the stadium, mayhem here amongst the fans, who were dancing, screaming and cheering. this is a team that had never been in the women's semifinals at all, and now they are in theirfirst women's semifinals at all, and now they are in their first women's world cup final. spain is a team that has been marred with so much drama, so much controversy and tension between their coach and some of his key players. a number of them had actually threatened to resign and not to come to the world cup. three of them have not actually come to the tournament. and yet, under his leadership, here they are, one step away from going all the way. as it stands, we know one side that is going to be playing in the women's cup final, and that is spain. they will face either australia *s matilda's, or england *s lionesses and they play each other tomorrow. huge rivalry with two big teams that have an immense amount of support. speaking for my family back home in new zealand, they say everyone there has chosen a team to support since new zealand did not make it through and there's been some really good match attendance figures coming out of those matches in new zealand and tonight is no different. it was in auckland. given that australia is now through to the final, can you explain the level of interest and excitement there is in australia about this tournament at the moment? i don't think you could overstate the amount of interest, but also the soaring popularity of women's soccer at the moment, women's football in australia. remember, this is a country that follows cricket, the afl, rugby, and yet the matilda's brand recognition, the fact that you have nearly 76,000 people in cameco stadium australia, nearfull stadium australia, near full capacity, stadium australia, nearfull capacity, 4.6 million in terms of viewership, breaking all sorts of records, and there is a projection that the game tomorrow will break those viewer records. young boys and young girls wearing the matilda's jerseys, very interested in what they are doing, and the ins and outs of these games. these players have become household names. they have changed the game in such a way on the pitch and off the pitch and they are riding a huge wave of momentum and support here in australia. it is so exciting — and support here in australia. it is so exciting and _ and support here in australia. it is so exciting and wonderful to hear. thank you so much. more now on our top story — former us laying out this story that we are seeing, this fulton county district attorney in the state of georgia near the city of atlanta issuing these 41 charges against former president trump, as well as 18 other people who are associated with him. all of this is centred around this alleged racketeering scheme, as it is called. this is reserved typically for gangs, for mobsters, for criminal organisations, saying that there is this racketeering scheme to overturn the results of the twenty20 election. what we are also seeing here from the former president, as well as some of his allies as you mentioned, is pushing back against this saying this is a witch hunt, this saying this is a witch hunt, this is an attempt to interfere in the upcoming 2024 election. they are not necessarily at this anniversary, two years since the taliban government returned to power. to stay with us. hello again. over the next few days it looks very much like the weather is going turn a bit warmer and, in the south, more humid, especially so on friday. but today what we've got is this low pressure now moving toward scandinavia allowing high pressure to build in from the atlantic, so the weather is fairly settled. what we have, essentially, is a day of sunshine and showers. the showers are well scattered and the heaviest ones will be across north—east england and also south—east scotland, where you could also hear the odd rumble of thunder. lighter winds than yesterday with highs of 15 to about 25. as we head on through the evening and overnight, most of the daytime showers will tend to fade. we will hang on to more cloud at times across the north—east of scotland. that could produce some patchy light rain and will also see some mist and fog patches form in parts of the west and the south. our overnight lows falling away to between ten and about 13, maybe 14 degrees. into tomorrow, the high pressure will be sitting right across us. hardly a breath of wind. you can see the distinct lack of isobars. tomorrow, again, is going to be another settled day. we start off and we hang onto this cloud across north—east scotland with the odd spot of rain and, as more cloud bubbles up through the day, we could see one or two showers develop, but they will be fewer and farther between than they are likely to be today and we are looking at highs of 14 to about 26 degrees. as we move on into thursday, we still are under the influence of high pressure, so a lot of settled conditions. you can see the onshore flow coming in from the north sea, so it's going to feel cooler along the north sea coastline. we could catch the odd shower through the channel, south—west england, wales and into scotland, to name a few areas. but it changes on friday. we've got two weather fronts coming our way one after the other, both bringing some heavy and persistent rain. it could be thundery, as well. in between, a drier interlude, but it won't be long before the next batch of rain comes in. both are heading northwards, so the driest conditions will be across the far north of scotland. it's also going to feel increasingly humid in the south, with highs potentially 26 or 27 degrees. on saturday, that rain eventually clears the far north of scotland, then we are into sunshine and showers. a lot of the showers on sunday will be in the north and the west. this is bbc news. the headlines: the bbc can reveal that three suspected spies for russia have been arrested in the uk in a major national security investigation. donald trump is charged with trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. the former us president calls it a "witch hunt". two years since the taliban returned to power in aghanistan — there's severe hunger and a near—collapse
