Recovery crews are combing through the charred ruins. More than 2,200 structures, homes and businesses have been damaged or destroyed. The states governor says some areas look like a war zone. The wildfires are the worst to hit a state in america in over a century, and there is growing anger on maui over both the lack of warning about the fires and the response by officials to the thousands left without homes and, in some cases, without adequate food and water. Jill tokuda, a democratic congresswoman from hawaii, told cbs that officials had been taken by surprise by the tragedy. Everybody who has ever lived in hawaii knows the warning sirens, it goes off once a month, and if it doesnt hawaii knows the warning sirens, it goes off once a month, and if it doesnt it hawaii knows the warning sirens, it goes off once a month, and if it doesnt it nets hawaii knows the warning sirens, it goes off once a month, and if it doesnt it nets fixed hawaii knows the warning sirens, it goes off once a month, and if it doesnt it gets fixed because hawaii knows the warning sirens, it goes off once a month, and if it doesnt it gets fixed because that is our first line of defence. Down at this harbour, we have been speaking to volunteers. People have flown in from the us mainland who saw the television and they didnt wait, they got on planes and said, we need to help. We have spoken to a team who flew in from louisiana, saying they are going to try and access lahaina. One man said he would go over on a jet ski to assess the needs. Thoughts and players will be available. The estimate is more than 5. 5 us dollars. President biden was asked if he plans to go over to hawaii, maui, bearing in mind this is the worst wildfire in the us have seen in over 100 years. His message was, we are working on it. They are rallying l together, but i think the impression we get increasingly is they are traumatised as well. Even before some of the Relief Effort can continue, we are talking about recovery efforts. People cant even grieve or mourn their loved ones yet. Because they are not able to locate them. We have 1000 people still missing on this island right now. In terms of going into the community of lahaina with those cadaver sniffer dogs, the process is slow. Only around 3 of the area has been, you know, searched through, searching through the rubble. People being told to do Dna Swab Testing to try and identify their loved ones. That is the first step to people can then start to process what had happened. We understand more aid is coming in. This really goes down to the very basics we need for humans to survive, food, shelter, water, health care, people even begin to talk about rebuilding their lives here. , ~ talk about rebuilding their lives here. , i. Our reporter on the ground, helena humphrey. Theres growing pressure on the uk government to do more to stop migrants crossing the English Channel on small boats after six people drowned off the coast of france. Labour says people smugglers are Running Rings around governments efforts to tackle the problem. Uk ministers have pushed tougher laws through parliament which make it illegal for people to claim asylum in britain if theyve arrived on small boats. Simonjones has the latest. Despite yesterdays deaths in the channel off the coast of france, the crossings continued. 500 more people were brought to shore this weekend. Every boat arriving puts more pressure on a Prime Minister who has made stopping them one of his top five priorities. Labour says the people smugglers organising the journeys are Running Rings around the government, and it accuses ministers of allowing the Asylum Backlog to get completely out of control. Process cases, get decisions made as quickly as possible, and then you can take action if people dont have a right to be in this country. And for those who do, you can make sure they are allowed to get on and live the rest of their lives happily. But also action on these criminal gangs. The government says its vital to break the Business Model of the smugglers. It insists increased patrols on beaches in Northern France and a new Returns Agreement with albania are delivering results. There are record numbers of people arriving in europe at the moment. But the actual number is coming from france into the United Kingdom have gone down. There is a lot of work that has been undertaken to achieve that. We are working very closely with the french government now to stop boats being launched. Obviously we havent stopped them all. Its going to continue to be a problem. But we have stopped a lot. Today, the winds have whipped up, meaning there have been no more crossings. But as soon as conditions improve, inevitably the people smugglers will be launching more boats from the beaches of Northern France, bringing with them the further risk of tragedies in the channel. On the seafront in dover, a memorial to remember those who have died seeking sanctuary in the uk. Six more men will now be added to that list. Unfortunately, it was going to happen some time, and we will have another one before long. All the time, people are trying to cross the channel in these boats, which are not designed for the purpose, then unfortunately things will go wrong. And politically, that may mean choppy waters ahead. A service has been held to mark the 25th anniversary of the Omagh Bombing the greatest single loss of life during the troubles in Northern Ireland. Families of those who died gathered in omaghs Memorial Garden where the names and ages of the victims were read out. 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, died in the 1998 real ira bombing. No one has ever been convicted of carrying out the attack. One of those speaking at the service was michael gallagher, whose son aidan was among the victims. He paid tribute to the catholic priest, father kevin mullan, who was at the scene of the blast and tended to the victims, but died earlier this year. Earlier this year, sadly, we said goodbye to father kevin mullan. Father kevin was present on the 15th Of August 25 years ago. He attended the victims on the scene, anointing with the last rites and providing comfort to the injured and the dying. We will always be indebted to him for the strength and compassion and courage he demonstrated on the day and the months and years and decades that followed. Kevin was a visionary that seen beyond green and orange. It didnt matter to him if you worshipped in a church or chapel, his wisdom and influence filtered into the community as he worked tirelessly, unselfishly, to create unity and togetherness. We will remember him as a decent and honourable human being. The Health SecretarySteve Barclay says he wants to offer the help of hospitals in england to reduce nhs Waiting Lists in scotland and wales. Figures this week showed a record 7. 5 Million People waiting for treatment in england alone. The government claims the percentage waiting for more than 18 months is higher in the two devolved nations than in england. Our Political Correspondent ione wells explains why the government is making this offer now. The Prime Minister rishi sunak said people should hold him to account if nhs waiting list are not followed by january 2025. Falling in england byjanuary 2025. So far, the figures are not going the right direction. We heard injune, waiting list for Hospital Treatments in england hit a record high of more than seven and a half Million People waiting for the first time. I think ministers in the uk government are aware that this could come back to bite them and are keen to argue that things wouldnt be better under opposition parties
