A century and there is growing anger on maui over both the lack of warning about the fires, and the response by officials to the thousands left without homes and in some cases, without adequate food and water. Sophie long reports from the island. This is what remains of lahaina. Cars abandoned as people ran and jumped into the sea to escape the flames. Homes and businesses reduced to charred remains. President biden promised immediate help and said every available asset should be used to provide it, but, days later, people here say its not yet reaching those most in need and people like felicia are desperately trying to get supplies into lahaina themselves. Im frustrated. People are. Were all together. Were one family, we need to take care of each other. No one s feeding everyone. Theyre traumatised. Theyre upset. No one s giving hugs. They need mental help. What do you need for me . To hear people in the same pads since the fire on thursday. Kids in the same diapers since thursday. People without food. They havent drank since before the fire. What are we doing . Hundreds of thousands flock to mauis stunning coastline every year and thousands ofjobs here are dependent on tourism, but the jarring contrast between those holidaying and those hurting is difficult to bear with so many still unaccounted for. The same waters that our people just died in three days ago are the same waters the very next day these visitors, tourists were swimming in and that says a lot about where their heart and mind is through all of this and where our heart and mind is through all of this, as well. You dont see our people swimming, snorkelling, surfing. Nobody is having fun in tragedy and continuing their lives like nothing has happened. There is two hawaiis right now. There is the hawaii were living in and the hawaii theyre living in, theyre visiting in. As search and recovery teams continue their difficult task of sifting through the remains, people queue for hours to get back to what were their homes. Confusion is leading to frustration. At 8. 30am, we went there. They said, go to The Other Side. So we went to The Other Side and same thing. Theres, like, a line and its not even moving so we came back here. So we got here at 9. 30 and its 12. 30 right now. Theyre not telling us what to do. The cops arejust going back and forth. But the authorities are asking for patience. We know weve got to go quick, but weve got to do it right, so when we pick up the remains and they fall apart. So when you have 200 people running through the scene yesterday, and some of you, thats what youre stepping on. I dont know how much more you want me to describe it. Thats what youre stepping on. Give us a little bit of time to contain that, please. People already know this is the deadliest disaster in hawaiis history and the death toll is still climbing. Sophie long, bbc news, maui. The bbc has been speaking to the governor of hawaii, josh green, and asked him about the lack of warning to residents of lahaina about the approaching wildfires. I think really what it was was an incredibly overwhelming circumstance, which was a hurricane and Hurricane Force winds simultaneously with fire. And weve not experienced anything like that in the region in a town before. There was a lot of response going on amongst the firefighters all across the island. I think that was the greatest confounding issue. But my team is doing a thorough review. Weve begun it with our attorney general, and thats the important piece for us now. Of course, most of our efforts are going to be on recovery, finding a way to reunite families with either those that theyve lost so that they have closure or getting them housing and survival. These processes normally come much after an incident like this, but were doing it in parallel because we want to be safer and learn right now. While the authorities continue the difficult work of searching for, and identifying, the dead, some residents are taking Relief Efforts into their own hands. John sudworth went out with one group of volunteers taking Relief Supplies by boat. We are on board the ocean spirit, a boat owned by the pacific whale foundation, a Marine Conservation charity. But today staff and volunteers on board are on a different mission. If you look down here, these are full fuel cans. A lot of people inside the Disaster Zone depend on generators for cooking. This, of course, is a vital lifeline. Over here, Something Else badly needed. Fresh drinking water. We can quite clearly see the town of lahaina now and what you can make out is the blackened landscape above the town where the grass was burning. And what happened with the hurricane blowing way off to the south, the pressure brought the wind over the top of the island, picking up speed on the way down the mountainside and picking up sparks from the fire and bringing them directly into the town. They didnt stand a chance. As well as the devastated town of lahaina, which is a short distance that way, there are communities like this one. They were not directly affected by the wildfire but have nonetheless been cut off without road access, power and communication for days. So this is vital aid and all of it delivered by volunteer effort. Theres growing pressure on the uk government to do more to stop migrants crossing the channel on small boats after six people drowned off the coast of france. The Opposition Labour Party says People Smugglers are running rings around Government Efforts to tackle the problem. More than 500 people crossed in boats on saturday. Uk ministers have pushed tougher laws through parliament, which make it illegal for people to claim asylum in the uk, if theyve arrived on small boats. Simonjones has the latest. Despite yesterdays deaths in the channel the crossings have continued. 500 more people were brought to shore on saturday after being picked up in flimsy boats. In dover, though, thoughts remain with the six men who did not make it. Unfortunately, it was going to happen sometime and we will have another one before long. All the time people are trying to cross the channel in these boats which are not designed for the purpose, then, unfortunately, things will go wrong. After the initial shock about the latest loss of life at sea, focus is inevitably turned to what can be done to prevent more tragedies. The government has made stopping the boats one of its top priorities, but so far, that has not stopped the desire of many to get to the uk. Labour describes the governments approach as shambolic. It wants a new focus on tackling the criminal gangs bringing so many people across the channel. And it accuses ministers of allowing the Asylum Backlog to get completely out of control. The total failure to do the basics, process cases, get decisions made as quickly as possible. And then you can take action if people dont have the right to be in this country. And for those who do, you can make sure that they are allowed to get on and live the rest of their lives happily. But also action on these criminal gangs. The government insist increased patrols on beaches in Northern France and a returns deal with albania, are delivering results. There are record numbers of people arriving in europe at the moment, but the actual numbers of people arriving from france into the United Kingdom has gone down. There is a lot of work that has been undertaken to achieve that. Were working very closely with the french government now to stop boats being launched. Obviously we havent stopped them all. It will continue to be a problem, but we have stopped a lot. And the french minister responsible for safety at sea, on a visit to calais to thank those involved in the rescue operation, said british and french lifeboats working together prevented more deaths. This terrible event showed that thanks to cooperation between france and britain, we have managed to save lives, that is what we have to focus on. The wind has been too strong for crossings today, but as soon as the weather improves, more will make the journey. A memorial on the seafront remembers those who have died seeking sanctuary in the uk. Six more men will now be added to that list. Our correspondent, bethany bell, is in calais with the latest on the rescue operation. There was another rescue overnight, the french coastguard said it picked up 5a migrants whose small boat got into trouble just ten kilometres outside the port of calais. They were bought to dunkirk, which is not very farfrom here. The french authorities have once again stressed how dangerous it is to cross the channel here in small boats, this is one of the most busy and dangerous crossings, and they say it is with very difficult weather conditions, where the wind changes very quickly. We have heard from frances prime minister, elisabeth borne say that she has praised the work of the Rescue Workers and has also said that her thoughts are with the victims and those who died in that initial incident on friday to saturday night. Aid workers around here have said that the number of migrants arriving in the region around calais seems to be increasing and that many of those people are sleeping rough along the coastlines here. The aid workers have told us that they warn them of the dangers of the crossing but they also say it is very hard to stop people who are determined to cross. A delegation of muslim scholars from nigeria says the leaders of last months Military Coup in niger are willing to solve the crisis through dialogue, not force. The clerics, who are visiting nigers capital, niamey, said the head of the new military government, had told them the door remained open for diplomatic efforts in the standoff with the west African Regional bloc, ecowas. Nigers militaryjunta is trying to drum up support from countries in the region which are also under military rule. Its emerged that on saturday a delegation from the junta was received by the authorities in guinea. On friday nigers new Defence Minister made a brief visit to mali. Earlier we spoke to nigers ambassador to the us Mamadou Kiari Liman Tinguiri who called on the coup leaders to release the elected president and restore him to power. The world should realise that what is at stake right now in niger is global security. Let me give you an example. The us has invested half A Billion Dollars in military equipment. The us has 1100 soldiers in niger in a base from where they can monitor and gather vital intelligence against isis, boko haram and alqaeda. Who are cooperating in a region five times as large as afghanistan. Who are plotting against the free world, who are plotting against women, girls, freedom, against democracy, against education. In terms of what needs to be done, we know that niger is an important country for Western Allies and america in particular. We have seen that some aid has been cut by the us, what more would you like to be seen done by the us and the International Community . I want them to support all the initiatives taken by our regional body, ecowas, the propaganda is going on that the military intervention, planned by ecowas is against niger, the people of niger. That is not true. The intervention is almost a Police Operation to free the president kept hostage, to free our legitimate institutions kept hostage. That is what it is about. That is the concern with Military Action though, that president Mohamed Bazoums life would be at risk, that is the threat, isnt it . The Responsibility Bears on the junta, they took him hostage, they took our country hostage, they have to give back our country to its people, to the people elected by the people to rule the country. That institution we are in, the responsibility should not be reversed. Now its time for a look at todays sport with gavin. Hello from the bbc sport centre. We know that streaming Services Like netflix, like to predict what kind of content we are more likely to watch. But can their algorithms read beyond our Tv Orfilm Preferences . 0ur News Reporter ellie house spoke to me earlier about how netflix recommended her series with lesbian and Bisexual Storylines before she even knew she was bi. Back when i was at university i thought i was straight, i hadnt really thought about it, and i noticed that i started to get quite a few recommendations for tv series or films with lesbian characters or Bisexual Storylines. I didnt think much of it but when i told friends about it who in most other ways are very similar to me, none of them had heard about the series. So this is specific to you and not just people of your age or living in your area or watching certain things . I dont know anybody else who has these recommendations. Six months later, i realised i was bisexual and at that time Myjournalistic Curiosity kicked in and i wondered why. Several years later now i have made a documentary about it which is coming out on tuesday on the World Service and bbc sounds. What was it that they were looking at, what were they measuring . The obvious thing is what you previously watched and what other people who watched those things what else they have watched. It makes sense that is how they would recommend things but it goes much deeper than that. There is also behavioural information, what you click on, what trailers you click on, whether you pause half way through, whether you pause and then continue, whether you pause and then leave it. What device and time of day, what you search. When you get up and go Make A Cup Of Tea . Lot of tiny pieces of information that doesnt mean much to us but when you have millions of people using various different platforms, notjust netflix, Binge Watching things, it really is a lot of data. That Machine Learning model can then use to draw patterns, patterns that maybe we wouldnt understand but the machine can see that. And then it recommends you things. When you are having this period of Self Discovery or whatever it is, we dont really know who we are in our teens, do you think that at any point, did that recommendations help you think about those things more . I think ijust. I was watching several other things, that wasnt the only things i watched. It was more a period of six months of Self Discovery and this was a curious paralleljourney that stuck in my mind for a few years. And led me to want to do this investigation. If you want to read her article, its just on the bbc website. This is a timelapse from croatias lastovo island. Phenomenon is one of the highlights of the year for star gazers thanks very much hello there. Good evening. Its been yet another unsettled weekend of weather with low pressure close by. But theres been some blue skies and sunshine around as well, such as here in dumfries and galloway. Also some showers such as these recorded by our Weather Watcher in shropshire. And its been blustery, too, for this time of year, and it does stay unsettled into the start of next week. A wet start for many on monday, but then things that will quieten down. So turning drier, more settled and also warmer, especially in the south. This is the Satellite Picture from earlier on today. You can see various Weather Fronts just approaching the South West Of England and wales. Theyll be pushing further northwards through tonight. So bringing some heavy downpours of rain for most. Well see rain spread into central southern england tonight, pushing northwards across Northern England by the time we get to dawn tomorrow, wet night across wales, mild and muggy underneath this cloud and rain. Temperatures in the mid teens in celsius across Northern Ireland. Some clear spells so cooler here and still a scattering of showers across scotland. Now on monday, there are met Office Weather warnings in force across wales and Northern England for heavy rain around 30 to a0 millimetres, possibly higher Rainfall Totals with any afternoon embedded thunderstorms, theyre possible, but it will dry out and brighten up, i think for wales and for South West England towards the end of the day. Still some bright spells across east anglia, sunny spells and showers for Northern Ireland and scotland. Its still rather windy in the south, but tuesday, a much calmer looking day of weather. That system has pushed its way northwards and eastwards into scandinavia. Its largely dry, particularly through the morning. Some Afternoon Showers perhaps breaking out for eastern areas of scotland and northeast england. Temperatures more widely rising into the late 20s in celsius. And it will feel more pleasant, of course, with those light winds in the best of the sunshine. And then High Pressure builds in as we head through wednesday, which will keep us largely dry. Still the possibility of some Afternoon Showers, but its keeping all of this low pressure out in the atlantic well at bay. So this these systems will be stalled. There will be some sunshine developing on wednesday. Watch out for some showers developing, particularly towards north sea facing coast. And any showers will be quite slow moving because of the light winds. But its starting to feel warmer. I think temperatures towards the South Of England in particular will rise into the mid twenties and Celsius Cooler towards the north, maybe some showers at times. This is bbc news. The headlines.
