onlyjust begun in earnest. fires do continue to burn there and helicopters are being sent to douse the flames one bucket at a time. many people — forced to flee at a moment's notice — had to leave everything behind, to the mercy of the flames. on saturday, hawaii's attorney general announced an investigation into why the island's warning siren did not sound at the height of the emergency. let's go live now to our reporter in maui, helena humphrey. helena, what's the situation right now where you are at the moment? we have been here from the early morning and gradually being asked to move back because the mood here is growing understandably ever more despondent as we continue to see the death toll rise, now standing at 80, but thousands of people still reported missing. and when you do go inside that shelter without cameras, of course, what you see, two qr codes to scan with your phone, one to report you are safe and the other to say, i am looking for someone. because so many people currently are unaccounted for. outside is a missing persons tent and now and again, you see more and more people coming in the seeing someone they know in this community, hugging them and breaking down. the words we hear over and over again, and breaking down. the words we hear overand overagain, i hear over and over again, i didn't hear overand overagain, i didn't expect, i didn't know you are here, i didn't expect to see you here, i'm glad you are safe. that really is the situation here on the ground right now. that belies all the frantic activity you can see out here behind me of cars continuing to come in. for those who haven't lost everything, they are here dropping off food, water, hygiene products, products for babies, anything they can because that really also typifies the response we are seeing here. hawaii has given it a word for kindness and warmth and generosity, aloha. that is what we are seeing, but it is being tested to the max right now as this state deals with its deadliest natural disaster in history.- with its deadliest natural disaster in history. you are at that shelter _ disaster in history. you are at that shelter and _ disaster in history. you are at that shelter and we _ disaster in history. you are at that shelter and we know - disaster in history. you are at. that shelter and we know there are people now being allowed back into lahaina for the first time, we have seen images of long lines of cars. do we have a sense of what people are finding when they do return to where their home may be one stood? ~ ., stood? well, the warning yesterday _ stood? well, the warning yesterday from _ stood? well, the warning yesterday from the - stood? well, the warning i yesterday from the governor stood? well, the warning - yesterday from the governor was for residents of lahaina to brace themselves for what they were going to say, see going back into their old homes. many finding it is no longer standing. 80% of that town, historic old town, completely decimated. we have heard different information throughout the day about whether people are still able to get access to lahaina, we don't necessarily know why that is, but there could potentially be safety concerns talking about such historic buildings which have been burnt to the ground. but this also contributes to concerns about the death toll here as well because the 80 people accounted for so far for the most part were people that were found to have perished out in the open. we are getting more federal search and rescue and recovery teams coming in including cadaver sniffer dogs from washington state, california and so on, but they haven't been able to gain access to all of those properties raised to the ground. and of course, those concerns about what people will find when they do gain access are just terrific. briefly, we are hearing these reports are disaster alert system and hawaii did not go off, that there may not be much off, that there may not be much of a warning to residents about these wildfires, has there been criticism about how prepared that area was?— that area was? there is frustration _ that area was? there is frustration here - that area was? there is frustration here and - that area was? there is| frustration here and that frustration here and that frustration is turning to anger at times, people saying it was my neighbour banging on my door telling me to get out with my children. other people saying, it was the winds and the heat that alerted them. know when here we have spoken to have said they heard a siren or received any kind of text messages —— no—one. the attorney general is now saying they have opened an investigation into what happened. investigation into what happened-— investigation into what ha - ened. . , , happened. helena humphrey live on the ground — happened. helena humphrey live on the ground in _ happened. helena humphrey live on the ground in maui, _ happened. helena humphrey live on the ground in maui, at - happened. helena humphrey live on the ground in maui, at the - on the ground in maui, at the temporary shelter, thank you so much for your report. welcome of the speed of the fire front on tuesday caught many people of god. —— well, the speed. our north america correspondent john said with has been meeting with some residents who have lost everything. —— our north america correspondent, john sudworth, has been meeting with some of the residents who have lost everything. it looks like doomsday, armageddon, basically. brian captured the destruction of his home town on his mobile phone. cars, propane or anything with gas, whatever, gas station was going boom, boom, boom. and it sounded like a war zone. he's one of 23 members of this extended family, all now refugees from lahaina, crammed into the home of a relative. this is what they've left behind — the line of cars burned, as people tried to escape, and the charred remains of businesses and homes. the house, the house that we stayed in is all gone. nothing left? nothing. so...it so breaks my heart, because we're expecting we go home from work. no more place to stay. yeah. the family, like thousands of others, are now relying on hand—outs of clothes and struggling with the trauma of what they saw that night. it's so fast. you can see the fire jump. getting closer and closer? yeah, closer and closer, but we cannot do anything, we just stand up and watching. i said, "let's go! the fire is here!" forensic teams are continuing with the difficult task of combing the wreckage for human remains. the island of maui's stunning coastline belies the fact that this is now the scene of a major disaster, and with the town of lahaina a little way along the coast, they are facing such devastation that the police are working to keep everybody, including the media, at bay, unless you can show proof of residency. and although the mood remains calm, there are also hints of anger. many say they received no warnings at all. questions are being asked about whether the authorities could have done more to raise the alarm. john sudworth, bbc news, maui. six people have died and two may still be missing after a boat carrying migrants sank in the english channel. 60 survivors have been taken ashore on both sides of the channel after a rescue operation triggered by a passing ship reported an over loathing —— overloaded vessel. simon jones loathing —— overloaded vessel. simonjones reports loathing —— overloaded vessel. simon jones reports from loathing —— overloaded vessel. simonjones reports from dover. the sea has claimed several more lives. the french lifeboat had the grim task of bringing five bodies back to shore, a sixth person airlifted to hospital didn't survive. some of those rescued were taken to dover, after lifeboats from the uk joined the search operation. many of the survivors had been in the sea, screaming for help. others had been trying to bail out their sinking boat using their shoes. translation: they were in trouble. some were suffering from seasickness and the boats are quite simply overloaded. they overload the boats and so the boats can no longer move forwards. the last boat was too full. these pictures, taken earlier in the week, showjust how many people can be crammed into flimsy boats in the world's busiest shipping lane. the french authorities say they will only intervene at sea if a boat gets into difficulty. the mp for dover is calling for a new approach. this is an absolute tragedy today in the channel, and my thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. what we now really need to see is the french stopping these unseaworthy and overcrowded vessels getting into the channel in the first place, and a joint channel security zone. charities supporting refugees say they have heard calls for change before. it's tragic, isn't it? we've been here several times in the last few years _ and nothing changes. every time we're stood here, loss of life in the channel, i we call for this to bej a catalyst for change and it never is. and it'sjust, it's- another needless tragedy. rescuers say this is the seventh time in the past week that people have had to be pulled from the sea. it's raised concerns that the smugglers organising the crossings are perhaps using a defective batch of boats, boats which are already dangerously overloaded, and that is making the crossing even more perilous. butjust hours after the deaths were confirmed, more people from other migrant boats were being brought ashore, their desire to reach the uk undiminished. the home secretary said her thoughts and prayers were with all those affected by the tragic loss of life. simonjones, bbc news, dover. a georgia grand jury is expected to hear evidence next week in an atlanta area case against donald trump and his allies for allegedly interfering in the 2020 election. on saturday, state's formally tenant governor and an independentjournalist said independent journalist said they had independentjournalist said they had both been asked to testify before the grand jury on wednesday. fulton county attorney general fani willis is thought to be seeking more than a dozen charges against the former president. they include conspiracy and racketeering and those charges could come in the coming days. trump denies any wrongdoing. donald trump did make an appearance at the iowa state fair, hundreds there greeted the former president as he moved around grills and even visited baby goats at that fair held in the first state to kick off voting in the us presidential primary. trump's visit happened as his lead driver, florida governor ron desantis. hejoined iowa governor kim reynolds for a fireside chat at the fairground. desantis has recently shaken up his campaign team, as he sinks in the polls, and and had long planned to attend the iowa state fair, scrabbling to reset that campaign. john reynolds, we saw that state fair in iowa and i am sure you have been to plenty of similar events, what you make of the kind of reception he got in iowa at this event?- in iowa at this event? what president _ in iowa at this event? what president trump _ in iowa at this event? what president trump it - in iowa at this event? what president trump it is - in iowa at this event? what president trump it is a - in iowa at this event? what i president trump it is a figure that transcends american politics, culturalfigure that transcends american politics, cultural figure and a curiosity and when he goes to a large event like the iowa state fair, he's going to draw crowds and this goes to the heart of the challenge for the rest of the challenge for the rest of the candidates who are conventional politicians, trump is not, he is a global celebrity and that create images on optics alone. but obviously, trump has his own vulnerabilities, the ones you mentioned in his legal jeopardy. there is great uncertainty in this race. trump right now has a considerable leading edge, but at some point, republicans will take a closer look at this race and they will have to decide if nominating trump will imperil their ability to win the white house next year.— their ability to win the white house next year. you mentioned these vulnerabilities, _ house next year. you mentioned these vulnerabilities, how- these vulnerabilities, how vulnerable is he really? we saw the reception he got in iowa, polling continues to show president, the former president trump trump is the frontrunner in 2024, yet these three criminal cases and a fourth possibly on the way, so is this affecting his campaign at all? not right now, but it's important for viewers to know there is no national primary in there is no national primary in the american presidential campaign. these are state—by—state elections in the first couple of months. so the national surveys that show trump with a lead are informative enough, but they are not as significant as what is going to happen in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina and nevada, the first four states in the republican process. if trump loses in one of those initial states, trump loses in one of those initialstates, it trump loses in one of those initial states, it would be seen as a competitive race. if trump comes out of the gates and runs the table to mix metaphors in those early states, that is the race, he's going to the nominee. but i am much less interested in national services than what —— surveys and what is happening on the ground in iowa and nevada because that is where these races are shaped in those parties and that is what is going to be significant the closer we are to the end of this calendar year. another candidate _ this calendar year. another candidate of _ this calendar year. another candidate of course - this calendar year. another | candidate of course running against former president trump is his former vice—president mike pence. he's not doing well in those national polls. do you get the sense now he is such a key player in indictment of president trump in the election fraud case? he has stayed true to his message, he has been very clear about his role, do you think that strategy is beginning to pay off in pence might be getting an unexpected bit of momentum here? i might be getting an unexpected bit of momentum here?- bit of momentum here? i don't drink pence — bit of momentum here? i don't drink pence has _ bit of momentum here? i don't drink pence has much - bit of momentum here? i don't drink pence has much of - bit of momentum here? i don't drink pence has much of a - drink pence has much of a window to be the republican nominee —— i don't think. i think what he's doing now has a lot more to do with his legacy, frankly. and trying to write that for history. in making clear that he believes he was faithful to the constitution on january 6th, 2021. the challenge politically 4p is not trump like enough for the supporters and for those sceptical to me he is too tired to trump. and there is not any obvious charisma. i think pence will have a hard time politically. and i think he is playing for the history books as much as he is for the nomination next year. and i want to make _ nomination next year. and i want to make sure - nomination next year. and i want to make sure to - nomination next year. and i want to make sure to ask. nomination next year. and i. want to make sure to ask you about the florida governor ron desantis. also in iowa, he has been trying to reboot his campaign. there have been staff shake—ups. has there been any recent good news for him and does he have any kind of chance of closing the gap to donald trump? i of closing the gap to donald trum - ? ~' ., ., , trump? i think the good news for desantis _ trump? i think the good news for desantis is _ trump? i think the good news for desantis is he _ trump? i think the good news for desantis is he has - trump? i think the good news for desantis is he has got the | for desantis is he has got the money and organisation in iowa to be competitive there if he can show that he is unable candidate. and i think part of the challenge with these bad process stories as we call them in the states, that he has suffered the last month with his staff drama, is that it really has not portrayed him in the best light as a candidate. he has got to use the debate later this month and subsequent debates to show he is a top tier candidate, he can beat trump in a primary and win a general election. and if he is able to demonstrate his facility as a candidate, he will have the infrastructure and the money in iowa to be competitive. but staff and organisation only matters if the candidate can appeal. and with desantis, that is the crucial question.- with desantis, that is the crucial question. very briefly, we have about _ crucial question. very briefly, we have about 20 _ crucial question. very briefly, we have about 20 seconds . crucial question. very briefly, i we have about 20 seconds left, but you mentioned the first republican debate is coming up in ten days, what is your prediction, will donald trump show up? i prediction, will donald trump show u - ? ~ , prediction, will donald trump show up?— show up? i think it is unlikely he will show _ show up? i think it is unlikely he will show up, _ show up? i think it is unlikely he will show up, but - show up? i think it is unlikely he will show up, but not - he will show up, but not impossible. donald trump likes to keep people guessing, he wants the attention focused on him so i think he will probably not do it, but i think he will not do it, but i think he will not rule it out entirely because he wants to keep voters guessing until the end. even if he doesn't show up, he will still do an event to try to draw attention.— still do an event to try to draw attention. we shall see. jonathan martin, _ draw attention. we shall see. jonathan martin, senior - jonathan martin, senior political columnist at politico, thank you so much. thank you. global oil demand hit a record high injune — that's according to an estimate by the international energy agency. david waddell. global oil demand first passed through 100 million barrels a day in 2019, but the impact of the covid pandemic hit demand hard. at one point in april 2020, the price of a barrel of brent crude fell to $22.4. it's much higher now. on friday, the market price closed at $85.5. that's a price that buyers are happy to accept on the world markets. june saw an estimated aggregate demand of 103 barrels per day. so why is demand so high? i put that question to the independent energy analyst cornelia meyer. well, the global economy is doing a little bit better than was anticipated at the beginning of the year. especially the us is doing a lot better. and even in europe, where some economies aren't doing too well, there is still that revenge travel, and tourism from the covid era. people want to travel again and all the planes are full, and we see that across the globe. in fact, the international energy agency says demand could reach a fresh peak this month, and has pushed up its expectation for the whole of 2023, suggesting demand could reach just over 102 million barrels per day across the whole year. that could push up prices even further. especially with recent supply cuts by saudi arabia and russia, the world's second and third biggest oil producers. of course, there's increasing pressure for all of us to move towards clean energies, and there are more electric vehicles on the roads than ever before. but on the whole, the global economy is proving resilient and the population continues to grow rapidly. so despite ongoing environmental concerns, the demand to keep producing and burning oil is here to stay. the iea doesn't expect oil demand to plateau until 2032. midwives in england are in short supply according to the royal college of midwives, which says england needs 2,500 more, blaming stress and burnout. ali vowles has been looking at the situation in gloucestershire. little baby river is five weeks old and the apple of his new mum's eye. charlotte's very nervous about hospitals, so the midwife—led birthing unit at gloucester, which offers a much less medical environment, felt like the perfect place to give birth. but when her husband phoned to say she was in labour, he was told the unit was shut, due to lack of staff. it's scary being pregnant and it's scary giving birth, so not knowing where you're going to give birth or where you're going to recover, it'sjust... it's very anxiety—inducing. and equally, the midwives need support. you know, they shouldn't be stressed. they shouldn't be having to run around feeling like they can't juggle their caseload. at the end of the day, there's going to be mistakes made. babies will suffer for it. there are three birthing units in gloucestershire — one in gloucester, one in stroud, which offers a limited service, and one in cheltenham which is closed. what's happening in gloucestershire reflects the national picture. the country is currently 2,500 midwives short. the nursing body that represents midwives says the whole situation is very concerning. we can'tjust keep treating staff this way, and we know that it's having an effect and existing staff are leaving. so it is about retaining these staff, who are so valuable in helping to support student midwives and train student midwives and newly qualified midwives as they enter the services. the trust says it's doing everything it can to attract new midwives and retain experienced staff. but while there's a shortage, they say... "our overriding priority is to provide consistent, safe staffing levels. and we must balance this alongside our aims to maintain as much choice as possible for women and birthing people." charlotte says she has nothing but praise for the midwives, but says this situation must change. period poverty has proved to be an issue across africa, with women and girls in some countries paying up to 13% of their monthly salary on menstrual products. a bbc pan—africa investigation has found ghana is the worst affected. these zimbabweans are celebrating receiving period products. for some girls, it will be the only ones they get all year. it has an impact on economic growth, particularly socioeconomic justice. so if we want to bring about women empowerment and the eradication of period poverty, we need to pull in all our collective voices. in 2019, this woman successfully got the government to scrap the 15% sales tax on sanitary pads in south africa. the overall fight is for gender equality, is for a woman to be treated as human. she is one of many africans trying to make change to period poverty across the continent. ibrahim is trying to also get boys involved in the conversation in nigeria and to remove stigmas around talking about mental hygiene. i feel i need to do something before it gets out of hand. i believe with initiatives like this, all of africa can eradicate it. the un population fund defines period poverty as the struggle many low—income women and girls face while trying to avoid menstrual products. the stories that i have been listening to of those girls, it is so touching to hear someone say, i cannot afford to buy pads. a bbc pan—africa investigation has revealed this is the case for many countries across the continent. through our research, we have found that those on basic pay spending between 3—13% of their monthly wage on sanitary products alone. this potentially results in girls having to use newspapers, cow dung and even transactional sex to get the products that they need. ghana is the worst affected of these. a woman earning $26 per month will have to spend at least $3 on pads. this equates to one in $7 of what a woman earns. i am beautiful! lam kind! what's stopping us from fighting against period privacy, what's stopping us from achieving gender equality? it doesn't have to take more than 300 years. she says tax reductions are not enough. she is now working to get a menstrual health rights bill passed in south africa. so if we work together, then we will be able to bring in the needed attraction, the needed attention towards eradicating period poverty once and for all across the globe. jen o'reilly, bbc news. the united states has returned more than 250 ancient artefacts to italy after police discovered they had washington, stay with us on bbc news. hello there. part one of the weekend was quite mixed, with low pressure bringing sunshine and showers, some of the showers were heavy and thundering in places. sunday looks similar, the same area of low pressure nearby bringing sunshine and showers. and it will be breezy, but not as windy as saturday. this is the air of low pressure sitting to the north—west of scotland. this feature will run in during sunday night and into monday across england and wales. sunday starts bright, good spells of sunshine in scotland, northern ireland, heavy ones in north east scotland. better chance of staying dry altogether through central, southern and eastern england, with highs of 22 or 23 degrees. generally, the high teens further north, especially where we have the showers. this feature runs into wales and south west england bringing heavy rain during the night. scotland and northern ireland drier away from these weather front. here, temperatures low teens, otherwise, the mid—teens further south. then for monday, we have that feature moving across england and wales. it could continue to bring heavy and thundery downpours in places, particularly wales, north—west england. the heaviest rain pushes out into the north sea as it clears away and we start to see sunshine moving into western areas later in the day, so it is an improvement. and not a bad day for scotland and northern ireland, fewer showers and more sunshine. temperatures 19, 21 celsius. that area of low pressure clears away and you see this area of high pressure from the west. that should settle things down. still the chance of showers across the northern half of the country, with light northerly winds, but the winds will be very light and we should see quite a bit of sunshine once any morning mist and murk clears away for england and wales. temperatures responding, 23, maybe 24 degrees. and that's the theme through the week. high pressure starts to take over. drier weather and temperatures respond. this area pushing in from the atlantic starts to see winds from the south and south—east, drawing up warm air from the near continent. apart from showers across northern areas towards the end of the week, turning sunnier and warmer across england and wales, with perhaps the high—20s likely across the south—east friday and into the weekend. hello, everybody. a very warm welcome to talking business weekly with me, aaron heslehurst. let's go and take a look at what's on the show. menopause and money — women over 50, they're the fastest growing part of the workforce, but the taboo around talking about the menopause still hangs over us. today we have an entire show looking at the menopause, its impact on women and the workplace. and we look at how companies are selling to the so—called menopause market. i'm going to be discussing all of that with these two, there they are, a leading doctor in this field and a uk government menopause champion tells me what companies need to do to stop women leaving theirjobs when those symptoms hit. plus, the multi—billion dollar menopause industry. i'm going to be speaking to a specialist about how companies can tap into this massive global consumer group and to the health shop chain holland and barrett, who have been leading the charge to change perceptions and make those menopause megabucks. wherever you'rejoining me from around the world, once again, a big hello and a warm welcome to the show. you know, it's quite shocking to realise that here in the uk,
