Lets return to our top story this hour the devastating wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of maui. Authorities say it will take many years and billions of dollars to repair the damage caused by devastating wildfires. At least 55 people have been killed and about 1000 are unaccounted for. The governor of hawaii said the blazes are probably his states largest ever natural disaster, and that 80 of the town of lahaina had been destroyed. 0ur correspondent Richard Galpin has the latest. My gosh the scale of what has happened on the island of maui has stunned all those living here. Unbelievable. And the thousands of tourists who were on holiday. The wildfire is fanned by destroying almost everything in their path. And taking many lives. This person was on holiday with his family from california and had a lucky escape from the flames. We left our vehicle and myself and my wife and ourfive kids got in the ocean, we found a floating board that we hung onto and we were out there floating and it was so surreal, everything was burning around us, explosions, cars blowing up. Inevitably the airports have been crammed with people trying to get out of the area. We were stuck in our rooms for three days and finally got escorted out. It was very scary because there was no light, we couldnt use our phones, we couldnt call family. When you are trapped between fires other. Things come to your feelings, especially if you not with your own family. It looks like a war zone out there, it looks like somebody came along and bombed the whole town. It is completely devastated, it is burned down to the ground. Finally, though, the fires are being put out, helped particularly by the winds dropping. That will bring enormous relief for everyone involved. But the grim task of searching for bodies is ongoing. We will continue to see loss of life but we have extraordinary professionals working on thejob. We have also seen many hundreds of homes destroyed and thats going to take a great deal of time to recover from. The Healing Process will be long and difficult but this disaster will never be forgotten. Richard galpin, bbc news. You heard a little bit from the governor of hawaii in Richard Galpins report. Later in the day the governor toured the Devastated Town Of Lahaina and sent this powerful message. You can see the devastation behind me. Ijust walked the entirety of this road, it is extraordinary, it is tragically gone. We know people are suffering, the Fertility Numbers will climb somewhat today. Well have those numbers. Everybody, love your neighbours, support them, because this is devastating for maui. We probably have well over 1000 buildings that have been destroyed, many hundreds of families have been displaced. We will rebuild. The president has in atjust six hours, authorised and approved our request for emergency support, but it will be a long haul. A short while ago, the cbs news correspondent, rudabeh shahbazi, gave us this update from Kahului Airport on maui. People have been sleeping here. A lot of them have been here for days, three days in some cases. It is a pretty peaceful atmosphere considering what is going on and the chaos outside the airport. A lot of volunteers. The spirit of the hawaiian people on full display here. People coming in, still showing up to work, volunteers are passing out blankets, pillows and food and toiletries. We even saw some people in the bathroom basically showering in the bathroom because they are homeless for all intents and purposes as they try to get out of this island. Really, there is nowhere to go. The roads are blocked. It is a small island. Some of the airlines have lowered prices for tickets to just 19 so people can evacuate off the island. People are being generous in spirit, they are getting along. You can see the airport is full of people sleeping here. They have their pillows, their blankets, and everyone is trying to make do. There is a Police Presence making sure that everything is ok, but it has been surprisingly organised given what is going on outside the airport. Many hundreds more are still missing, and that is the latest number that the governor released. We dont have the latest numbers because they cant even get to some of those sites in some cases. In most cases they are surveying by helicopter, Search And Rescue teams are flying in from all over america to try to assist. We saw some search dogs here earlier as well. But they cant get to them. You can imagine if your loved ones are missing and the telephones are down, the internet is down and you cant reach them for days at a time, knowing what we have seen here. You showed some of the devastating pictures, just a complete catastrophe. You can imagine what these loved ones are feeling who are still missing people here. We dont know what the numbers are. The death toll is expected to rise. Head to the live page on the website, there are so many accounts, updated pictures coming into the bbc all of the time, some of the pictures are devastating in terms of what they actually show, the impact of these wildfires. That is available on the bbc website. Now, earlier this week we brought you the tragic news that 41 migrants had died Ina Shipwreck off the coast of italy. Today came new figures suggesting a sharp rise in number of people taking similar Perilous Journeys across the mediterranean. The data from the eus Border Agency frontex suggests that the number of migrants crossing illegally into the European Union so far this year is 13 higher than the same period in 2022. More than 176,000 Illegal Migrants have reached europe so far this year. Straight to rome. Sofia bettiza is there for us. What the figures issued today tell us is that many more migrants have reached europe this year compared to last year. The number of people making regular Border Crossings into the eu had never been this high since 2016. The main route people are using is what is known as the Central Mediterranean route. People cross the Mediterranean Sea from north africa to italy. Many of them are coming from egypt, guinea, the ivory coast and are often fleeing war and persecution. What we are seeing is a new, dangerous trend of people using very small, low quality metal boats. They tented break during the journey. Metal boats. They tented break during thejourney. It metal boats. They tented break during the journey. It is very easy for them to capsize. This is exactly what happened earlier in the week here in italy. A small boat that was carrying 45 people on board capsized and, as a result, 41 people died. What frontex is saying is that even though this journey is very dangerous and people are dying trying to make it europe, that will not stop people from coming. That is because according to frontex there is a lot of competition between criminal groups in tunisia and libya and because of that people smugglers are offering much lower prices to people who want to try and get to europe. The eu has signed a deal with tunisia last month, tunisia has i with tunisia last month, tunisia has now become the main Departure Points for migrants trying to reach europe. That has pledged more than 100 Million Euros to try and deal with illegal migration. If you take italy for example, this year so for more than 93,000 people have reached italy by boat. That is double the number compared to last year. What we are seeing is that so far these measures are not really working. It is a very complex issue. We are seeing the tragic consequences. Thank you, sofia bettiza in rome. Well, the uk is of course also struggling with significant numbers of migrant arrivals. The government says 755 people were detected crossing the channel in small boats on thursday thats the highest daily number so far this year. The figure confirms the total number of people arriving in boats since 2018 has passed 100,000. 0ur correspondent in Dover Simonjones says the 100,000 figure is an unwelcome milestone weve seen the border force bring in two groups of migrants. The first boat had around 60 or 70 people on board. The second boat had even more. Thats going to take the figure for the past five years, when these crossings have really been taking place, to well over that 100,000 figure. We know that hundreds of people arrived yesterday. It was the first calm day weve had out in the channel for several weeks. Up until then, its been really wet, windy and miserable weather for this time of year. So it really shows how weather dependent this is. But for a government that has pledged to stop the boats, its an unwelcome milestone. This can be an extremely dangerous crossing. Yesterday, 17 people had to be pulled from the water. Four lifeboats went out off the coast of dungeness to help rescue those people after their boat started to sink. We also know from the french authorities that another boat carrying eight people got stuck by a sandbank. Now, initially, the eight people on board that boat refused to be rescued because they said they wanted to get to uk waters to be picked up by the border force or lifeboat and brought here to dover, but after several hours when their boat was clearly going nowhere and the situation was becoming more dangerous, they did agree to be taken back to france, but itjust shows how dangerous these crossings can be, but that these crossings continue pretty much every time we see calm weather out there in the channel. 0ne one more strand of this global issue. Meanwhile in myanmar, the bodies of 23 rohinjas have been recovered off rakhine state, after their boat sank as they tried to reach malaysia. Dozens of others are missing. The survivors said, they were trying to reach malaysia when their boat carrying more than 50 passengers foundered and was abandoned by its crew on sunday. Every year, thousands of rohingyas attempt the perilous sea journey to malaysia or indonesia. Many are escaping persecution in myanmar and overcrowded Refugee Camps in bangladesh. West African Army Chiefs say they will meet next week to discuss the Military Coup in niger, with some reports suggesting theyll prepare plans for military intervention. It comes after the regional bloc, ecowas, ordered the activation of a standby force, and just over two weeks since Military Officers in niger seized control of the country, deposing the president. International partners have cut aid and some have imposed sanctions to try to convince the army to step down. But the coup leaders appear to have Popular Support because they oppose the influence of france, nigers former colonial ruler. Some are calling for closer ties with russia instead. 0ur africa correspondent Catherine Byaruhanga reports. The fallout from nigers coup is already starting to hit ordinary people. The Military Takeover has unleashed anti french sentiments. Its embassy was attacked during demonstrations. Some protesters carried russian flags, Calling On Moscow to step in as their preferred international ally. France sees its former colony niger as an important security partner, but its accused of having too much influence in the country. Cheering. Similar anti french sentiments are widespread across its former colonies on the continent. Six countries from guinea to sudan have experienced coups since 2020. Five of them are former french colonies. France has had a very hard time accepting to losing grip on those countries, maintaining anachronistic control over their common currency, while also having a highly inegalitarian relation with its african partner. The worry now is that should another coup in africa succeed, it will encourage other ambitious soldiers. Catherine byaruhanga, bbc news. The weekend is just around the corner, is it going to rain again . The rest of today is not looking too bad at all, we have some renowned there but now in a case of bright and sunny weather. However, low pressure will be very close by through the weekend, this is the satellite picture, you can see it spinning around here, just to the west of ireland, and heres the weather map, can see low pressure across the uk through the weekend, giving us that mixed bag. But it will not be too bad, i dont think we will have persistent rain, just a mixture of sunshine and showers. End of this afternoon, temperatures around 21 in belfast, 26 in norwich, plenty of dry and bright weather through the course of this evening, then later today we expect some rain to Western Parts of scotland, glasgow getting some rain, belfast, liverpool, perhaps Western Areas of wales by the early morning, so norwich, hull and newcastle waking up to some sunshine early on saturday and around 16 celsius. The forecast for saturday, fairly brisk around western coasts, this breeze around the area of low pressure, and for many of us, a mixture of those sunny spells and occasional showers but also one or two lengthy spells of sunshine are forecast. Sunday, showers looking more frequent, so northern ireland, western part of scotland, drier weather the further east you are, and some parts of the south and south east might actually get away with no showers at all. Monday and into tuesday, low pressure starting to fizzle away, and by tuesday eventually well see High Pressure building in. But monday i think chance of some rain across the south, fine weather for wales, the north west of england, lancashire has some fine weather, the Lake District should have some sunshine, but scattered showers expected across parts of scotland. Add a little cooler, 19 i think to 21 celsius on monday. The outlook, the weekend a bit of a mixed bag, showers and even the odd crack of thunder, but remember spells of sunshine too, and some time later next week, it could warm up once again.
