welcome to three hours of checking out the truth behind stories. we start in hawaii, where 55 people are now known to have died in devastating wildfires. about 1,000 remain unaccounted for. damage to communication lines is making it difficult to locate people. to give you a sense of the utter devastation on maui, i first wanted to show you these pictures. they were taken by a passenger on a plane landing on the island. they really capture the extent of the wildfires as they burn out of control. the governor of hawaii estimated that 80% of the town is gone. he said it was probably the us state's largest ever natural disaster. we can also show you these pictures. they show that some buildings seem to have been left untouched by the flames whilst others just metres away have been completely destroyed. locals have been left to just look in horror at what they've lost. there were no warning sirens to alert them as the flames moved towards their homes. authorities say it will take many years and billions of dollars to repair the damage. this map gives you an idea of the fires that are still burning on the island and where firefighters are still battling to contain the flames. this is the reality of what that map shows, astonishing pictures from a passenger plane flying above maui. the authorities are still battling these files. ——fires. some of the people who managed to escape gathered in a safe parking area to spend the night. they've been describing what happened. i lost my home, all of my papers, too, everything. all i could take with me was my wife, my son, my car, and that is it. i felt like i was going to die. it was just fire filled up the parking lot, everything, just put a towel over my face and started going. as we were leaving, i go out first, i have thick clothes on, double, triple layers, and everything is red, it is all dust and wind. we saw the smoke finally by the time we got in the house. it was, like, a minute or two. we we pictures. they were filmed from a boat as it sailed away from lahaina looking back at the shore. you can see the huge amount of smoke and the flames around the harbour. people felt that it was not safe, they could not stay ashore, and went into the sea. some eyewitness accounts say that they were at sea for quite some time, treading water for hours, before they were rescued. hawaiian coastguard said that 50 people were rescued from the water. mattresses have been brought in for people to sleep on. this photo was taken at the war memorial stadium shelter in maui, where a mixture of motorsport has been set up, where there are pleas for missing loved ones to get in contact. in terms of reading through, one says we love you, call us please, now offers of help, can you give rides to be brought that legionella bacteria has been discovered in the barge's water supply. legionella can cause a serious lung infection known as legionnaires disease. the bbc understands the evacuation as a precautionary move, and officials plan to move the migrants back onto the barge once the all clear has been given. the use of the barge has been a political controversy that has lasted for days now. cohort off of the vessel whilst further tests and investigations take place. we understand that though the asylum seekers on board have used the water suoply, seekers on board have used the water supply, now individuals are presented with symptoms of legionnaires' disease, and asylum seekers have been provided with the appropriate support. also because the samples relate to specific whitley vessel itself, the advice is that the wider local community is not at risk. the home office is now awaiting those follow—up tests being carried out by dorset council's environmental health officers, and the government said they are going above and beyond the uk health and security advice by evacuating everyone temporarily, although no news on when there will be to get back on board. a further blow to the government's asylum policy, and of course the biggest common barge itself has been beset with delays when it comes to getting the first cohort of asylum seekers to board the barge. and of course today the grim milestone of 100,000 channel crossings since 2018, more bad news, labour today saying today that it is right to evacuate the barge, but this is a complete and utter shambles and announcement that few expected. a couple of weeks ago, the recruitment head in the southern region of 0desa was even arrested. there is a bit of history here, a bit of tension between these recruitment centres within the military itself, because theissue within the military itself, because the issue of mobilisation, where ukraine is calling up and continues to call up thousands of men at a time for its continued war effort, it is a sensitive subject, and there have been issues around how that is done. if you go and what the recruiters say, what new land forces say, they are responsible for it, they say the system needs more money, it needs modernising, and they often get a bad rep for doing they often get a bad rep for doing the work of the military, and it seems it is politically unpopular in the past for it to receive any kind of funding. and then we have this announcement from president zelenskyy against a backdrop of pressure from western allies to deal with corruption in ukraine, something the country has always grappled with. but then there are also allegations from the men themselves who find themselves receiving draft papers, claims in 0desa certainly when shall we say heavy—handed tactics have been used where there are allegations of men find themselves on the front line with very little training. of course there are sizeable proportions of there are sizeable proportions of the population who are motivated to volunteer and fight, but such is the nature of this war, there is a continued demand for troops took not just replace those who have been lost, who have been killed, but also to provide relief for those who have been fighting on the front line, and some pretty unimaginable conditions, for several months now. so this is quite the announcement, and it will have far—reaching consequences. james, meanwhile, there have been further russian missile strikes to the west of the country, tell me a little more about that. this region in western little more about that. this region in wester ~ ., , ., ., in western ukraine, when you have that wa , in western ukraine, when you have that way. for— in western ukraine, when you have that fighterjets, one was shot down but one of those missiles landed near a military base where you fighters were being trained on western jets, you fighters were being trained on westernjets, that you fighters were being trained on western jets, that appears to have been targeted. we are told a house was hit by a nature old boy was killed. so this is somewhere which typically feels far away from the comfort, but it is a reminder how most of ukraine is under threat. the south—eastern city of zaporizhzhia, even by the standards of this war, has had a miserable 72 hours, missiles hitting civilian buildings. russia claims to be targeting military targets, as it does, but has been an increase.— military targets, as it does, but has been an increase. junior doctors have begun another four day strike in england, as part of their long—running pay dispute. nhs leaders have warned it means more significant disruption to the health service, with thousands of appointments and procedures postponed. the government says its pay offer, which averages 8.8%, is fairand final. the bma said the government needed to offer a credible pay rise. none of us want to be on strike. all we are asking for from the government as a credible offer. to put this into context, full pay restoration over the course of a year would cost £1 billion net. that is what we are after, £1 billion. these strikes have cost well over that. so they are put in party politics over common sense and logic right now. we can speak now to adam, who represents many of the trusts. in terms of the impact of these strikes, give me your assessment. it strikes, give me yourassessment. it is difficult to gauge just at the moment, a few hours into this latest round of strikes, with their particular impact so far. we have had from trust reporting that there is disruption once again, and we know that cumulatively over the course of recent months, more than 800,000 procedures, operations, appointments and had to be rescheduled. so unfortunately it does mean more disruption for patients, it is disruptive for staff as well in terms of cover having to be brought across, affecting the quality of services across the piece. it is frustrating for the wider nhs, which is so keen to get on with addressing backlogs which have built up an art such a priority. so all in all, in terms of strike action, nobody wins. in terms of what patients _ strike action, nobody wins. in terms of what patients are _ strike action, nobody wins. in terms of what patients are being _ strike action, nobody wins. in terms of what patients are being told, - strike action, nobody wins. in termsj of what patients are being told, how quickly, just generally, are people going to be able to actually get a new appointment for either an operation, a procedure, orsome new appointment for either an operation, a procedure, or some sort of check? is there any sort of indication of how this works, given previous strikes?— previous strikes? unfortunately trusts have _ previous strikes? unfortunately trusts have become _ previous strikes? unfortunately | trusts have become accustomed previous strikes? unfortunately i trusts have become accustomed to planning and preparing for strike action. it is a process that is all too familiar. they have become in many respects quite adept at trying to mitigate the impact, but of course there is an impact for patients, who do face disruption, and the guiding principle is to address those delays, minimise delays, where there is the greater clinical need, and work is being done. so it will be a differential impact for different patients with priority given to those who need care and treatment most urgently. briefly in terms of this question, in some cases we have heard that consultants have been brought in to cover some of thejunior consultants have been brought in to cover some of the junior doctors, the urgent care, does that create an additional cost for the nhs? it does, and what we are seeing is, in terms of the added financial impact, it is something in the region of £1 million so farfrom it is something in the region of £1 million so far from these stoppages, and of course the longer they go on, the greater that cost, and the nhs can ill afford the additional expense when resources are already so severely stretched, and the imperatives are so strong to actually catch up in terms of backlogs come in terms of transforming services, which is urgently required. you transforming services, which is urgently required.— transforming services, which is of dollars to repair the damage caused by devastating wildfires. at least 55 people have been killed and about 1,000 are unaccounted for. the weather on its own rarely causes wildfires, but it can bring conditions that makes them more likely it helps to fan the flames, which is exactly what has happened in hawaii. it has been very dry here of late, and then passing to the south, we have had this major hurricane. the centre of the storm has stayed well away from hawaii, but it has been squashing up against this big area of high pressure, and that squeeze between the two is generated some very strong winds, gusting up to 67 mph. but with that storm now drifting away westwards, the winds are easing. it will stay quite busy over the next few days, but not as windy as it has been. however, apart from just the odd passing shower, it will remain largely dry. the governor saying expecting that number of 55 deaths to be updated later in the day, a very worrying assessment like that, we know that hundreds of people are still missing, those who survive, this is the sort of thing that they return to as they have returned to homes that have been completely destroyed. large parts of the west of maui that look like this with so much being destroyed. stay with us here, because in the next half hour, we can get the latest from the governor, his assessment on the ground. he has been touring some of the most damaged areas, and will also hear from the most damaged areas, and will also hearfrom our the most damaged areas, and will also hear from our cbs the most damaged areas, and will also hearfrom our cbs college also hear from our cbs college at the airport. 0r also hear from our cbs college at the airport. or that coming up on the airport. or that coming up on the programme here in the next few minutes. —— cbs colleague, all of that coming up. the weekend is just around the corner, is it going to rain again? the rest of today is not looking too bad at all, we had some rain earlier but now a case of bright and sunny weather. however, low pressure will be very close by through the weekend, this is the satellite picture, you can see it spinning around here, just to the west of ireland, and here's the weather map, can see the low pressure across the uk through the weekend, giving us that mixed bag. but it will not be too bad, i don't think we will have persistent rain, just a mixture of sunshine and showers. end of this afternoon, temperatures around 21 in belfast, 26 in norwich, plenty of dry and bright weather through the course of this evening, then later today we expect some rain some rain to belfast, western parts of scotland, glasgow getting some rain, liverpool, perhaps western areas of wales by the early morning, so norwich, hull, and newcastle waking up to some sunshine early on saturday and around 16 celsius. here's the forecast for saturday, fairly brisk around western coasts, this breeze around the area of low pressure, and for many of us, a mixture of those sunny spells and occasional showers, but also lengthy spells of sunshine are forecast. sunday, showers looking more frequent, so northern ireland, western parts of scotland, drier weather the further east you are, and some parts of the south and south—east might actually get away with no showers at all. monday and into tuesday, low pressure starting to fizzle away, and by tuesday eventually we'll see high pressure building in. but monday i think a chance of some rain across the south, fine weather for wales, the north west of england, lancashire enjoying some fine weather, the lake district should have some sunshine, but scattered showers expected across parts of scotland. and a little cooler, 19 i think to 21 celsius on monday. the outlook, the weekend a bit of a mixed bag, showers and even the odd crack of thunder, but remember lengthy spells of sunshine too, and some time later next week, it could warm up once again. bye— bye. live from london, this is bbc news. the death toll from hawaii's wildfires rises to 55. about 1,000 people are still missing. asylum seekers — housed on a barge on the south coast of england —
