Now take a look at what is left. These pictures are from the historic coastal town of lahaina. You can see the burned out wreckage of the homes there. The governor of hawaii estimated that 80 of the town is gone. He said it was probably the us states largest ever natural disaster. We can also show you these pictures. They show that some buildings seem to have been left untouched by the flames whilst others just metres away have been completely destroyed. Locals, who have been left to just look in horror at what theyve lost, say there were no warning sirens to alert them as the flames moved towards their homes. Authorities say it will take many years and billions of dollars to repair the damage. This map gives you an idea of the fires that are still burning on the island and where firefighters are still battling to contain the flames. Some of the people who managed to escape gathered in a safe parking area to spend the night. Theyve been describing what happened. I lost my home, all of my papers, too, everything. I i lost my home, all of my papers, too. Everything too, everything. I felt like i was auoin to too, everything. I felt like i was going to die too, everything. I felt like i was going to die. It too, everything. I felt like i was going to die. It was too, everything. I felt like i was going to die. It wasjust too, everything. I felt like i was going to die. It wasjust fire going to die. It wasjust fire filled going to die. It wasjust fire filled up going to die. It wasjust fire filled up the parking lot, everything, just put it out over my face and everything, just put it out over my face and started going. As we were leaving. Face and started going. As we were leaving. I face and started going. As we were leaving, i go out first, i have thick leaving, i go out first, i have thick clothes on, double, triple layers. Thick clothes on, double, triple layers, and everything is red, it is all dust layers, and everything is red, it is all dust and layers, and everything is red, it is all dust and wind. We have heard other survivors describe how theyjumped into the sea to escape the flames. To give you a sense of that, i want to show you these pictures. They were filmed from a boat as it sailed away from lahaina looking back at the shore. You can see the huge amount of smoke and the flames around the harbour. People felt that it was not safe, they could not stay ashore, and went into the sea. Some eyewitness accounts say that they were at sea for quite some time, treading water for quite some time, treading water for hours, before they were rescued. Hawaiian coastguard said that 50 people were rescued the water. And these Pictures Filmed By Authorities In Hawaii show the burnt out boats that were left after the flames had torn through the harbour. Hawaiis governor Toured Lahaina to see the devastation for himself. He posted this message on social media. Aloha, hawaii. You can see the devastation behind me. Ijust want the entirety of this road, it is extraordinary, it is tragically gone walked the entirety of this road. We know people are suffering, the Fertility Numbers will climb somewhat today. Everybody, love your neighbours, support them, because this is devastating. We probably have well over 1000 buildings that have well over 1000 buildings that have been destroyed, many hundreds of families have been displaced. We will rebuild. The president has in atjust six hours, authorised and approved our request for emergency support, but it will be a long haul. Again, the devastation is behind me, but we will put out in front of us. Aloha. So, a Relief Operation is under way to help the residents. Makeshift shelters have been set up and there are queues of traffic as people head towards them hoping for some shelter. You can see from these Pictures Matresses have been brought in for people to sleep on. Well one of the most famous residents of maui island is Oprah Winfrey and shes been meeting residents, and helping with the relief effort. 0ur reporter on the island, max matza, caught up with her. It isa it is a little overwhelming, but i am so pleased to have so many people supporting and people bringing what they can, so i came earlierjust to see what people needed, and then went shopping, because often you make donations of clothes under does not really people need. So i went and got things like shampoo, diapers, sheets. And got things like shampoo, diapers, sheets. Oprah winfrey there. A short while ago, the cbs news correspondent, rudabeh shahbazi, gave us this update from Kahului Airport on maui. People have been sleeping here. A lot of them have been here for days, three days in some cases. It is a pretty peaceful atmosphere considering what is going on and the chaos outside the airport. The spirit of the hawaiian people on full display here. People coming in, still showing up to work, volunteers are passing out blankets, pillows and food and toiletries. We even saw some people in the bathroom basically showering in the bathroom because they are homeless as they try to get out of this island. Really, there is nowhere to go. The roads are blocked. It is a small island. It some of the airlines have lowered prices for tickets to just 19 so people can evacuate of the island. People are being generous in spirit, they are getting along. You can see the airport is full of people sleeping here. They have their pillows, their blankets, and everyone is trying to make do. There is a Police Presence making sure that everything is ok, but it has been surprisingly organised given what is going on outside the airport. Do you have an update on the figures . We are hearing that at least 55 people have died. It seems that many hundreds more are still missing. Many hundreds more are still missing, and that is the latest number that the governor released. We dont have the latest numbers because they cant even get to some of those sites in some cases. In most cases they are surveying by helicopter, Search And Rescue teams are flying in from all over america to try to assist. We saw some search dogs here earlier as well. But they cant get to them. You can imagine if your loved ones are missing and the telephones are down, the internet is down and you cant reach them for days at a time, knowing what we have seen here. You showed some of the devastating pictures, just a complete catastrophe. You can imagine what these loved ones are few and who are still missing people here. We dont know what the numbers are. The death toll is expected to rise. We are seeing those pictures as we speak to you, and you get a sense of the scale of the devastation. So traumatic for so many people. What stories have you heard about what people have been going through . Well, we talk to one tourist from california, a 15 year old boy. He had a broken toe. He said he was stumbling around in the dark. They lost electricity and power in the resort. They finally made it to the airport where they have been waiting for their flight. He had a bandaged foot, but they said they couldnt get any health care. He has to wait until they get back to the mainland in order to get the treatment. You can see it is becoming an increasingly desperate situation. Resources are scarce. It is a small, Remote Island in terms of being far from mainland United States and from japan on the other side. Having lost all of these resources, and with people still missing and the Emergency Services having to triage, we have been hearing the stories. We are also hearing about people acting in a heroic way, helping others, going into the flames, searching for loved ones, and those who are still coming to work. It really impacted me, the Southwest Airlines people who are working 16 hour days, even though their loved ones are missing, because they say the spirit of the hawaiian people is to take care of their visitors. That is top of their minds. We are hearing a lot of devastating situations. When this first happened, people jumping into the ocean to escape that ball of flames. Many people burning in their cars trying to get out, waiting in line to get out on single routes that were shut down as this wall of flames ripped through the island. Some awful stories from hawaii. Youll find a lot of them on the bbc website, the live page up and running there, the latest video and audio as well. Ijust read about somebody on the island saying one of the problems is really the key location systems, because there is no cell phone service, no wi fi, sometimes all they hear is from the news on their car radios, so it is very hard to find people for people to find out if their home is Still Standing or whether or not their loved ones have survived. So if anyone in time, one woman saying it breaks her heart that all of the history is dust, our history, the islands history is just ash and dust. Do it on and take a look at all be very latest from hawaii. Weve been getting some news that the Asylum Seekers that were moved on to a barge off the english coast are being evacuated. It is believed that Legionella Bacteria has been discovered in the barges water supply. Legionella can cause a serious Lung Infection known as legionnaires disease. 0fficials do plan to move the migrants back onto the barge once the all clear has been given. For more on this lets speak to Public Health consultant, nigel calvert. What exactly is Legionella Bacteria . A very common bacteria, it grows in water, you will find it in lakes, rivers, any stagnant water, really. The problem is that when it forms aerosols, so typically things like showers and hotels, perhaps, and boats obviously, then there is a risk of inhaling it, and you get exposed to the infection, which as you said, can cause pneumonia. Halal you said, can cause pneumonia. How does it aet you said, can cause pneumonia. How does it get into you said, can cause pneumonia. How does it get into the you said, can cause pneumonia. How does it get into the water supply . It is there all the time, it is just an environmental bug which will be in water unless it is distilled or something. But normally the process, when youre commissioning a new Accommodation Block or something, would be to have a Risk Assessment done, where you look at the weight of the plumbing to make sure theres not too many dead legs, as they call them, where you can get stagnant water, you would want some negative testing done before you move people in. It sounds like they have done that process but mr men before they have had the results. find that process but mr men before they have had the results. Have had the results. And it is potentially have had the results. And it is potentially very have had the results. And it is potentially very serious have had the results. And it is potentially very serious if have had the results. And it is potentially very serious if it i potentially very serious if it develops into legionnaires disease. It can be, it is patently treatable but it is a serious infection, in response to fairly normal antibiotics. The difficulty is if it is not picked up early, theres kind of exposure which is ongoing, big numbers of people can be affected, if it is a Water Fountain or numbers of people can be affected, if it is a waterfountain or in a public place, for example, we had a big outbreak a few years ago in barrow which was an air conditioning system, lots of people can be exposed. If you have a lot of people infected, some people are not going to do so well, but on an individual basis, if you are reasonably fit and well, the outlook would be pretty good. But as i understand, nobody is actually sick. I guess they are testing them, but it sounds like they have done the right thing, getting people out to avoid an exposure. We getting people out to avoid an exosure. ~. Getting people out to avoid an insure getting people out to avoid an exosure. ~. ,. ,. , exposure. We are also hearing they want to move exposure. How long does it take to deal with this and make sure the water is good again . If and make sure the water is good auain . ,. , ,. , again . If they got the results are ust needs again . But how do ou usually to get results back. But how do you clean usually to get results back. But how do you clean the usually to get results back. But how do you clean the water usually to get results back. But how do you clean the water supply, usually to get results back. It do you clean the water supply, how do you get rid of it . Do you get rid of it . It will need to be drained do you get rid of it . It will need to be drained and do you get rid of it . It will need to be drained and flushed, do you get rid of it . It will need to be drained and flushed, thenj to be drained and flushed, then there are procedures about keeping hot water hot and cold water cold, because it is in the sort of lukewarm water where it thrives, and regularflushing lukewarm water where it thrives, and regular flushing as well. If there are big errors of this ship, because i think it is quite a big facility, not too many people in, you want to have some kind of flushing visionary cleaners, when they go round, with open the taps and showers and let them run on a regular basis, so you do not get the stagnation which gives the bug a chance to grow. 50 gives the bug a chance to grow. So they have done the right thing by moving them off . I they have done the right thing by moving them off . Moving them off . I think so, if i were in charge, moving them off . I think so, if i were in charge, that moving them off . I think so, if i were in charge, that is moving them off . I think so, if i were in charge, that is what moving them off . I think so, if i were in charge, that is what i i moving them off . I think so, if i were in charge, that is what i would do, it is not a big number of people, it is not as though it is in the ocean somewhere, it is in the harbour, so i would get them at and make sure all is well before they go back. But the question i would ask is why this was not looked at before the impact in the first place. Titer . The impact in the first place. Very interesting the impact in the first place. Very interesting to the impact in the first place. Very interesting to get the impact in the first place. Very interesting to get some clarification around that, thank you forjoining us. Interestingly, the home office have given us a bit more 0ffice have given us a bit more background in the past hour, and they say this is believed to have come from the pipes on the vessel, and they say that tests of the water at Point Of Entry into the vessel had shown no indication of legionella, so clearly developments in other areas of the vessel, and last night the uk health and Security Agency advised the home office to move six Asylum Seekers from the vessel, but as a precautionary measure, all 39 who were boarded so far, they had started to board this week after a number of delays, have now disembarked while further investigations are undertaken. We understand that the Asylum Seekers on board had used to be supply, but so far no individuals have shown symptoms of legionnaires, there have been given the appropriate support from the Health Agencies involved. It is a type of pneumonia, the home office is now awaiting those follow up tests which are being carried out on the water system. In their background, they have given their background, they have given the timescale as to when the group of Asylum Seekers, as i say, who have just embarked on the vessel this week, will be able to embark again, but they have also, just as a note to the wider community, said this is not expected to impact anybody wider in the portland area, but as you say, more unwelcome news for the government on this.
