Yesterday was the warmest day of the year, 28 celsius, a month. Today feeling fresher with sunny spells and showers. The full forecast throughout the programme. Its friday, the 11th of august. Our main story. The latest round of strikes byJunior Doctors in england will start in just over an hour, as a long running dispute involving half of all doctors working in the uk continues. Nhs leaders are warning it means more significant disruption to the Health Service, with thousands of appointments and procedures postponed. Our Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes reports. Were now into the fifth round of strikes byJunior Doctors in england with little sign that their union, the british medical association, or ministers are prepared to yield. But the continuing Industrial Action is having an impact on patients. Former teacher margaret is trying to plan a holiday, but she also needs to get a new Pacemaker Battery fitted. One nhs appointment was cancelled because of an earlier walkout, and margaret has mixed feelings about the strike. But rather than risk another cancellation and her health, shes going private. I have some sympathy, yes, but i dont really approve of it because, in fact, theyre putting lives at risk. But if they think thats the only thing that they can do and, i mean, i wouldnt want to be a Junior Doctor and work the hours they do work. This long running strike centres on pay. The bma is asking for a 35 pay rise to restore salaries to 2008 levels after a series of below inflation pay deals. But the government has offered a pay rise worth an average of around 8. 8 , describing it as a fair and reasonable settlement. For the lowest paid doctors, the deal is worth io. 3 . Of course, i stand ready to have discussions with Junior Doctors in terms of other issues about their working conditions. But in terms of pay, we made a fair and final offer. Weve accepted in full the recommendations of the independent pay review body process, and that is why the bma should now call off their strikes. There will be more Industrial Action later this month when consultants will strike for two days. Nhs bosses are warning the Health Service could reach a Tipping Point where it becomes impossible to cut Waiting Lists as much as the government wants. ButJunior Doctors leaders say they remain determined. Weve been burnt too many times by this government and, over the last 15 years, weve seen that year on year on year, we will be offered these sub inflationary pay cuts. Now, no ones asking for us to snap our fingers and, overnight, have all of the pay thats been cut away from us given back in one go. But i think what we do need is a pay deal from government that acknowledges the amount of pay weve lost and acknowledges inflation, moving forwards, and making sure that it doesnt happen again. There are concerns that, by the end of the month, Industrial Action could have led to a million appointments being rescheduled. In total, more than seven and a half Million People are now waiting for treatment and operations. Nhs bosses are calling on both the government and the bma to find a breakthrough urgently. Dominic hughes, bbc news. We will be discussing that action later in the programme. Also keeping a focus on what is happening in hawaii after the wildfires. Yes. New numbers in terms of those who have been affected. At least 53 people have died in wildfires on the island of maui in hawaii, after what Officials Say is the largest Natural Disaster in the states history. At least three major blazes broke out on tuesday and spread across the island. Sean dilley has this report. A community in smouldering ruins. Many homes here in lahaina burnt to charge wrecks. The church and the harbour among the Historic Sites wiped out by the flames that tore indiscriminately through the formerly picturesque tourist town. The us marines and National Guard among the Emergency Workers on the ground. The us president , joe biden, has declared the situation as a major disaster. We are seeing loss of life here. As you know, the number has been rising and we will continue to see loss of life. But we have extraordinary professionals working on this job. We also have seen many hundreds of homes destroyed. And that is going to take a great deal of time to recover from. Lahaina has felt the biggest impact from the wildfires. The death toll is rising. Most fires are under control, but authorities are still working on a number on maui and the neighbouring big island. Here in lahaina, Rescue Efforts are moving more quickly now that winters of up to 80 kilometres per hour have died down. Military resources opening up a path for rescuers to search for survivors and to recover those who have died. Authorities in lahaina say their iso year old scorched fig tree should recover, but it may take far longer to regrow a community robbed of so many houses and hundreds of years of history. Sean dilley, bbc news. The Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland has said he wont resign following a significant data breach. Simon byrne cut short a Family Holiday to return to belfast, where he faced several hours of questioning by the Northern Ireland policing board. Police are investigating the death of a ten Year Old Girl in surrey as murder. The girls body was found inside a Home On Hammond Road in woking in the early hours of yesterday. Visitors to a beach on thejurassic coast had a narrow escape after part of a cliff above them collapsed. Video captured in west bay shows the moment a large section of rock fell near a number of beachgoers. Dorset council warned that rockfalls and landslips are common in the region. Administrators for the high street chain wilko are continuing to talk with potential buyers as they look to prevent the loss of thousands of jobs. The homeware and garden retailer, which has 400 shops, fell into administration yesterday. Lets get some more details from emma vardy. Who is outside a store in lancaster. Where are we in this process today . Wilko is a familiar sight on high streets in the uk and yesterday came the news that many employees had been dreading, that the company was being put into administration which means 12,000 jobs will now be at risk across the stores in the uk after a buyer was unable to be found for the 400 stores. The announcement came from the Chief Executive yesterday as he took the decision to put it into administration. Wilko is a company with a long history of trading, trading since 1930. We had Immediate Reaction from gmb union saying they believe the decision was entirely avoidable. Unavoidable. Wilko could become the biggest high street casualty of the year. Studio thank you. More than 100,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats in the past five years. The government started the official count in 2018, but it doesnt include those who made it across without being intercepted by the authorities. Our Reporter Simonjones joins us from dover. There is added up figures are one thing but it is day by day that we watched people still trying to cross on small boats. The watched people still trying to cross on small boats. Watched people still trying to cross on small boats. The 100,000 figure is certainly an on small boats. The 100,000 figure is certainly an unwelcome on small boats. The 100,000 figure | is certainly an unwelcome milestone for a government that promised to stop the boats and yesterday the crossings continued. Hundreds brought to shore at the Port Of Dover by the border force and lifeboat. Yesterday was the first calm day in the channel for several weeks. Before that, it has been wet and windy. So hardly surprising we saw people arriving in large numbers. And a reminder yesterday of the dangers of making this crossing in the worlds busy shipping lane. A boat started capsizing and people had to be pulled from the water with four lifeboats involved in the rescue. The government had called this week its small boats week and wanted to get on the front foot, describing what it was doing to prevent crossings so we had the announcement of a new deal with social Media Companies to try to stop smugglers advertising crossings online. We had news of a deal with turkey designed to stop the boats going from turkey all the way to france and being used to make the journeys across the channel and we had the first Asylum Seekers moved onto the barge in portland. I think some of those announcements have been derailed by the 100,000 figure. Certainly the government would not have wanted it this week and with the weather set to be fair, we are likely to see more people arriving. Studio thank you. A plane was forced to make an Emergency Land on the a40 in gloucestershire after a suspected engine failure. The aircraft was on its way to Gloucestershire Airport when it landed on the busy main road, but, amazingly, no one was hurt. Emergency services were called and investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing. A Beautiful Day yesterday for many of us if you enjoy sunshine and heat. This story will interest you because you are interested in weather. What was the weather like in europe 1 million years ago . Was it cold . Yes. I think we can go further than cold. Very, very cold. Humans living in europe more than a million years ago were wiped out by a big freeze previously unknown to scientists thats according to new research. The evidence published in the journal science suggests the continent was unpopulated for 200,000 years after that, until humans adapted to cope with the colder conditions. Heres more from science correspondent pallab ghosh. British Researchers Scour the shores of North Norfolk for the fossilised remains of the very first humans to have lived in britain. Its long been held that they came to europe from africa and never left. But a secret found at the bottom of the sea suggests that they were all wiped out. This strip of mud from the ocean floor has changed the human story in europe. Analysis in a lab in barcelona of the chemicals inside it shows that temperatures plummeted more than a million years ago. This was particularly cold and that would have meant, for the humans, not only that they would have trouble to find resources, for example, food, but also that the extreme conditions have led to the depopulation of these early humans from europe at 1. 1 million years ago. Researchers found that there was no evidence for humans in europe for 200,000 years after that. But, then, early humans came back. These footprints, found under the sands of the North Norfolk coast, are some of the first humans to have returned after this newly discovered ice age. Lets imagine what it was like and how they survived. Happisburgh was one of the first places those early humans came back to around 900,000 years ago, long before it was a beach. The big freeze was over, but it was still cold much colder than it is today. So they had to learn how to cope by building better shelters and developing better Hunting Techniques for food and furs to stay warm. They may even have become hairier. This is important because it shows that our early ancestors were inventive and adaptable, which is why we are here today. Researchers are still searching for what remains of these humans. These are the stone tools they learnt how to make. Theyre adapting the whole time to new environments, new climates, right the way through the ice ages, and developing new technologies to cope with these cold conditions. The face is really quite delicately built. This is a reconstruction of a skull of one of those early humans smaller brained, but gradually evolving into more advanced species, researchers say in the journal science. And that species was certainly more evolved. Things like a larger brain, a more modern looking face, teeth that are more like ours. So this does seem to be a species that has, if you like, moved on in evolutionary terms. The new results are another piece of the jigsaw that helps to explain how humans evolved and learnt how to tame nature to become the dominant species on the planet. Pallab ghosh, bbc news, happisburgh. Lets take a look at some of todays papers. The telegraph leads on the Junior Doctors strikes, saying they have so far cost the nhs a billion pounds. Well, one couple visiting italy was left stunned after the receipt for a meal showed an unexpected extra two euro charge. They both soon realised theyd been billed for having their toasted sandwich cut in half. And it turns out there are plenty of extras you can be charged for. For example, if a band plays near to where you are sitting, there can be a charge based on how close you are to the music. Or you might be charged for opting to sit down for table service, instead of propping yourself up at the bar or counter. So we would like to hear from you on this. A Murder Investigation has been launched after the body of a 10 Year Old Girl was discovered in woking in surrey. She was found after Police Officers were called to an address in hammond road in the early hours of yesterday morning. Police have identified a number of people theyd like to speak to and say at this stage they are not looking to identify anyone else in connection with their investigation. Two men have beenjailed for their part in a Daytime Robbery and knife attack in the west end and the city in which members of the public suffered savage injuries. Tyrone dean from tottenham, on the left, and Louis Parkinson from islington wore masks when they tried to snatch Mobile Phones and flee on bicycles. Their plan failed when passers by stepped in and frustrated their attempts at a getaway. A South London Castle with a History Dating back to 1811 is being brought back to its former glory. Kingswood arts were handed the keys back in 2022 when the building was disused and derelict. Since then theyve created an arts hub and will be offering history tours of the refurbished castle later this month. It was first built in 1811, it was a much smaller building then. And then in the 1890s it was bought by a guy called john ljohnson, who was an inventor of bovril. He expanded the building massively and added the castle like features. So since then its been known as bovril castle. This was youth club, it was a safe space, it was open for us. So it having that context back again, being the heart of the community, is very important. I think it is such a good place for young people creatively and Just Community wise as well. Lets take a look at the latest on the tubes now. Theres no service on the Bakerloo Line between Stonebridge Park and Harrow Wealdstone and on the overground no service between euston and watford junction. There are severe delays on the central line. Minor delays on the circle and the dlr. Now onto the weather. Good morning. After that glorious summers day yesterday, today not looking too bad on the whole. We can expect to see plenty of sunny spells, particularly through the late morning but, yes, the risk of scattered showers later this afternoon. If youre just heading out, its a bit of a misty, murky and, yes, mild start to the day, but the cloud will thin and break through the morning so plenty of sunshine on offer. But again through the afternoon, with that south westerly flow, the increasing risk of showers. Temperature wise, not quite as warm as yesterday, but not too bad, with highs of 25 celsius. This evening, a dry evening overnight, the cloud will thin and break, so very similar conditions to last night, just a touch fresher, thank goodness, with overnight lows of 12 13. On to the weekend, low pressure in charge again but, on the whole, not too bad a weekend. An increasingly brisk wind on saturday and the risk of outbreaks of rain, sunday looks to be the better day of the weekend, and dry next week. Thats it from me but theres plenty more on our website including the story of the former gang leader turned pastor who now runs a church. Ill be back in around half an hour. The death toll on the island of maui, in hawaii, is still rising following wildfires which have ravaged the area. The fires began on tuesday and spread quickly, fuelled by strong winds generated by hurricane dora. Thousands of people have been evacuated to makeshift shelters and 11,000 people are still without power. We can speak now to meteorologist Malika Dudley who works for a tv channel on the island. The biggest Transfer Deal of the summer is coming to a head and it is decision time for the england captain. Bayern munich and tottenham have agreed a deal in principle for kane, in a deal that would be worth around £86 million. So it is now down to kane himself, who has one year left on his contract, and he must decide if he wants to leave north london and join the german champions. Spurs kick off at brentford on sunday amid this angst for kane and for fans, who seem resigned to it now. Yeah, just a bit surprised, really. Weve come for the stadium tour, got half way round and then it was Breaking News that he agreed the deal, so were just a bit shocked, i think. Its kind of sad to see harry kane go because hes a good striker and hes been scoring lots of goals for the team and hes been really contributing. I mean, they are offering him a lot of money, ill give him that. And if he thinks he can win trophies there and do better there, then, yeah, i understand it. So it remains unclear whether kane will be a part of the new premier League Season, which starts today. Defending champions Manchester City kick off the new campaign away at newly promoted burnley, who are managed by the former city captain Vincent Kompa ny. After such a Successful Campaign last season, the hardest thing now is defending the treble they completed last season. No, i dont think so it will be possible to do what we have done last season. So its one in a lifetime. So i said to the players, forget about it. So we climbed the highest mountain last season, what we have done, but the last two days we came down to the mountain and we start from the, you know, from there, with everyone with the same intention and itll be a lot, a lot of difficulties to climb as high as possible in our level, the mountain, and we will see. We play against such a good opponent, a team filled with players and people that i know, of course, but mainly. Probably the best challenge you could ever have, you could ever ask for. And i want a team to embrace this game. And hopefully the fans can do the same. Well, burnley came up alongside luton, who got promotion via the play offs to reach the Premier League for the first time in their history. They travel to brighton tomorrow for their first match, knowing that theyre the favourites with most bookmakers to go straight back down again, but that doesnt concern their manager rob edwards. Im not offended by that because i think thats the norm, whoever gets promoted out of the playoffs, i would say. I understand it, you know, with luton town, the first time weve been in the Premier League, we are a small club and we came up through the playoffs, so i think thats the norm. So, cool, you know, people can write us off. We believe in ourselves and what were about. I think we had a lot of that last year anyway, in terms of promotion. You know, there was not much chat about luton throughout those last few months and we were there, we were there. I think that helps us, to be honest. So people can keep writing us off, thats fine. Well, last night there was plenty of action on the pitch, as qualifiers for the Europa Conference League took place. There were disappointing defeats for hearts and derry city, but it was a much better night for hibernian at easter road. They have one foot in the next round of qualifying for the Europa Conference League after beating swiss side luzern 3 1. The second leg is next thursday and, if hibernian progress, theyll play aston villa next. Now, the womens world cup quarterfinals are under way and englands women will be without lauren james for tomorrows quarterfinal against colombia, and the semifinal, should england make it that far, after fifa decided to extend her ban, following her red card against nigeria. Jane dougall is in sydney for us. Jane, a setback, yes, but it could have been worse. The dream scenario, england get to the final and she scores the winner. A bit of a setback for england, such as dynamic and exciting player, laurenjames. She set up three goals against china in the group stages and scored two goals. But it could have been a lot worse. We already knew she wasnt going to be playing this saturday for the Quarterfinal Match against colombia. A red card in the womens world cup is an Automatic One Match Ban but fifa had the opportunity to increase it to three, and they are increasingly moving violent conduct bans to three games, so it could have been worse. You could argue that stepping on somebody on the deck is not violent but it was deliberate, petulant and foolhardy. The Disciplinary Committee took it into consideration and showed some leniency with a two match ban. So laurenjames could return for the World Cup Final if england were to get that far. British Sign Language is an officially recognised language, and pupils in scotland are able to sit exams using bsl, but for science students many crucial words have been missing. Terms like Greenhouse Gases and Carbon Footprint havent existed, but that is changing. Our science correspondent Victoria Gill has been finding out more about the new signs being added to the bsl dictionary. An Afternoon Learning about the science of climate change. True orfalse plants and oceans remove Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere. This is a lesson taught in British Sign Language, a language that until recently was missing crucial scientific vocabulary. At this Secondary School in glasgow, deaf children are learning newly created signs that have just been added to the bsl dictionary. So this is a sign for Greenhouse Gases and thats a new one, i didnt know that one before. So in physics, for example, some of the concepts are really abstract, and Sign Language can help children understand, because its a visual language. So this is a sign for photosynthesis. So here we have a leaf. And this is the sun. Its light energy and its absorbed into the leaf, which then creates something. It creates food. It was back in 2004 that students in scotland were officially allowed to do their exams in British Sign Language. But the scientific terms for Science Exams just didnt exist so theyre being created, still, here at edinburgh university. Deaf scientists, educators and Sign Language experts Work Together to create the new signs. Today, the focus is human biology. Youve got the brain, the spinal cord, and then the branching out from the spinal cord. Spinal cord and Central Nervous system would also include the brain. Yes. So then you would add to that, that symbol, you would add to that sign to include the brain . Yes. That becomes the Central Nervous system, but we need to make sure that were all in agreement. The scientist leading this project wants to break down the language barriers that she faced in her early career. I was involved in research for 11 years and although i went to numerous meetings but was never truly involved because i couldnt understand what people were saying the interpreters werent qualified. In the last decade, dozens of descriptive scientific signs have been added to the official British Sign Language glossary. That has just been so important. Its had a huge impact on me. Ive been able to have conversations using this vocabulary and its helped me with my teaching. So im passionate about continuing this work, as are the whole team. Once its been agreed on, each new biological sign is recorded for the video dictionary. For deaf students, these are more than just words theyre visual explanations. I really like science and i Love Learning it, and its easier to learn when we have the signs. Its language thats helping some of the next generation of scientists to understand and talk about the world around them. Victoria gill, bbc news in glasgow. And as science progresses there will be more phrases to be included. Someone who knows about science, has his scientific head on all the time, simon. That is a big number. It feels rare. 28 degrees, the warmest in the uk for a month, 28 degrees, the warmest in the uk fora month, it 28 degrees, the warmest in the uk for a month, it wasjuly the last time we felt temperatures like that. But it was only for a day, temperatures now down round about the average for the time of the year. Look at this picture from shropshire, the sky is like a painting. It has been quite muggy overnight. These are the temperatures out there at the moment, 18 19. You might have noticed it feeling muggy last night. Some rain overnight as well but starting to clear away into the north east. On the Satellite Image you can see this cloud, this is the weekend weather, an area of low pressure which will give us unsettled conditions. Here is the rain we saw overnight moving north and east. Still effecting the north east of scotland, heavy bursts of rain there this morning. It will clear into the Northern Isles. For many of us, a fine start to the day and we will see some sunny spells, some showers in Northern Ireland and scotland, one or two in wales, thicker cloud in the South East Of England, the possibility of showers in the afternoon. Still warm in eastern areas, 26 in east anglia, the South East Of England, but elsewhere, temperatures 21 25, a bit more fresh compared to yesterday. Here is the low pressure i talked about, moving into the uk for the weekend, and it means a mixture of sunny spells and showers. A lot of showers on saturday in northern and Western Areas, largely dry in the south east, a few passing showers in the afternoon. A few showers could be sharp with a rumble of thunder but they will move through quickly and we will see sunshine after the clear. Temperatures 21 24. Pleasant enough where you have sunshine. Sunday, more of the same. The showers most focused in northern and Western Areas of the uk but moving through fairly swiftly. Plenty of usable weather in the weekend with sunshine at times. Once again, temperatures of 18 23, 24, around about the average for early august. Next week starts unsettled, one area of low pressure moves through, then this area of High Pressure sits around as we go through the middle to the end of the week, meaning it will become a little more settled. There will be more dry weather, more in the way of sunshine. And temperatures 23, 24, perhaps warming up temperatures 23, 24, perhaps warming up a bit more as we go into the end of next week into the weekend. Balloon pilot Peter Gregory lost his Life Injune Doing what he loved. The 25 year old was flying in a competition when it deflated and fell to the ground. Today, his family and friends will gather at the festival to remember peter. John maguire is there for us this. Morning, john. There shaped balloons are more difficult to fly so when conditions are iffy you will not see them. That huge square billion, that would be like driving a bus compared to a race car. You will see pink ribbons on all of the balloons. That is in memory of pete, his name was mentioned in the Pilot Briefing this morning and of moment of reflection. Racing balloons especially as a very tight knit community so petes death has been very heartfelt. Has been felt very hard. If ever, anyone was born to fly, it was pete gregory. A Third Generation Hot Air Balloonist and also an airline pilot, he lived his life in the skies. Since the age of three, pete and his brother dan often flew with their father, andrew. Ballooning is a field and he was passionate about aviation as a job and ballooning as his hobby and his passion. I guess you could say we were born into hot air ballooning. Pete gained his licence at the age of 17, i gained mine at 19, and weve flown in many countries Around The World and been very lucky to do so. The brothers took up competitive flying. Here they are winning thejunior World Championships in poland two years ago. They were both involved in a contest in Worcestershire Injune when petes balloon crashed and he was killed. Dans ground crew that day was andrew, with his wife louise doing the same for pete. Losing your son is just. Yeah, its just horrific. People say, oh, he was doing something as he loved when he sort of left the planet. But thats sort of bittersweet in reality. It really is. I mean, i think its also a lot harderfor his mother because she was on the marker cross to actually. Where they were all dropping the markers, and she was basically there, so its very, very raw. An Air Accident Investigation will seek to discover what happened and, crucially, what, ifany, lessons can be learned. Dan is determined to carry on flying. I know for a fact if i was just sat on the sofa at home, pete would be like knocking on my shoulder, being like, why are you doing that, dan . You need to go out and compete and do the best you can. And hopefully thats what i can do for him over this summer and also the years ahead. But andrew has reservations. Because pete cant fly any more, sort of, so why should i, in a way . But id like to think i will get back into it. But i think it willjust be a bit. A bit longer. Hot air balloons are more than a pastime for this family. Its their profession, their passion. So in petes name, theyve set up a trust to buy a balloon that Trainee Pilots will be able to use. Encouraging the next generation of balloonists was an ambition of petes. He aimed to become an instructor. I want pete to be there, everywhere i go. And ill always be asking the question, like, what would pete be doing here . Because thats what hed be asking about me, im sure. Pete was such a friendly and happy chap, and ijust want people to always think about him. And what we do Going Forward is thinking like, yeah, pete would be so proud of what were doing here. Nothing can replace him, but keeping his name alive, keeping pete gregory flying, will at least offer the family some solace. We arejust we are just about ready to leave the ground here at ashton court, just getting the heat up in the balloon, the burner is what you need, and you can see the Ground Crew Holding is in position ready to take off, and we can take off now. A Murder Investigation has been launched after the body of a 10 Year Old Girl was discovered in woking in surrey. She was found after Police Officers were called to an address in hammond road, in the early hours of yesterday morning. Police have identified a number of people theyd like to speak to and say at this stage they are not looking to identify anyone else in connection with their investigation. Two men have beenjailed for their part in a Daytime Robbery and knife attack in the west end and the city in which members of the public suffered savage injuries. Tyrone dean from tottenham on the left and Louis Parkinson from islington wore masks when they tried to snatch Mobile Phones and flee on bicycles. The building was first built in 1811, it was a much smaller building then. Theres no service on the Bakerloo Line between Stonebridge Park and Harrow Wealdstone. On the overground no service between euston and watford junction. The central line has severe delays and there are minor delays on the circle line. Now the weather with georgia. Good morning. After that glorious summers day yesterday, today not looking too bad on the whole. We can expect to see plenty of sunny spells, particularly through the late morning but, yes, the risk of scattered showers later this afternoon. If youre just heading out, its a bit of a misty, murky and, yes, a mild start to the day, but the cloud will thin and break through the morning so plenty of sunshine on offer. An increasingly brisk wind on saturday and the risk of outbreaks of rain. Sunday looks to be the better day of the weekend, and dry next week. The latest round of strikes byJunior Doctors in england will start in an hour, as a long running dispute involving half of all doctors working in the uk continues. Former teacher Margaret Gotheridge is trying to plan a holiday, but she also needs to get a new Pacemaker Battery fitted. For the lowest paid doctors, the deal is worth 10. That Strike Action has begun. One of the places where doctors will be Picketing Today is St Thomas Hospital in Central London. Louisa pilbeam is there. They will be on the picket line. The Health Secretary Steve Barclay said it is patients who will bear the brunt of the action. It is they who are suffering. ButJunior Doctors will say that they will strike until they get to their 35 . As you have heard, talks have stalled. They point out that gps and pharmacists will run as normal if you need their help. Studio thank you. We will be talking to the Chief Executive of nhs providers. And a representative of the bma in the next hour. We are also focusing on the devastating fires in hawaii. We are getting some more numbers in terms of those who have died. And that is going to take a great deal of time to recover from. Lahaina has felt the biggest impact from the wildfires. The death toll is rising. Most fires are under control, but authorities are still working on a number on maui and the neighbouring big island. Yesterday was the first calm weather we have had in the channel for several weeks, so hardly surprising people arrived in large numbers. We will get the figures laterfrom the large numbers. We will get the figures later from the home office but it will have taken us past the 100,000 figure since the crossings began in earnest five years ago. We heard from the french authorities that yesterday they rescued 66 people. Eight migrants had got stuck on sandbanks, and initially refused help. After being stuck several hours they eventually agreed to assistance. There was also a dramatic rescue in uk waters with 17 pulled from the water after their boat capsized. For the government that has promised to stop the boats, this is an unwelcome figure, the 100,000. They were trying to get on the front foot announcing initiatives such as a new agreement with social Media Companies to stop smugglers advertising journeys. A new agreement with turkey to try to stop the supply boats, and the first Asylum Seekers moved onto the barge on the south coast. But i think this figure today will overshadow that. We are keeping a night on growth, albeit very slow growth, but any signs of growth. That is right, the gdp figure we bring generally every quarter. In the last few minutes showing in the Second Quarter this year, gdp grew by 0. 2 , the economy is still very sluggish but marginally better than the 0. 1 growth we saw in the first part of this year. It is playing into the continuing big picture of the uk struggling to bounce back after the pandemic. The economy is often compared to others in the world that have been growing faster. There had been warnings over the past year we could slip into recession. That still has not yet happened but experts feel we are still not out of the woods. 0. 2 figure, why does gdp matter . It is the value of goods and services in the value of goods and services in the economy and that is how we calculate the health of the countrys finances. If more goods and services are produced, more money is going around and people potentially can get better wages and we can feel better off but it has not felt like that for a long time because Interest Rates are squeezing household spending. People finding it much more difficult to go out and spend money, which affects how much turnover businesses have and how much they can expand and plan for the future. Which is dire. What do you think it would take which is dire. What do you think it would take to which is dire. What do you think it would take to turn which is dire. What do you think it would take to turn this which is dire. What do you think it would take to turn this around . I which is dire. What do you think it. Would take to turn this around . What we need is some would take to turn this around . Twat we need is some confidence would take to turn this around . Wisgt we need is some confidence on behalf of businesses. We know growth is sluggish. Growth leads to higher gdp which means more goods and services, more value in the economy. Until we get investment, i do not think that will come about, and the situation we have, i think a lot of firms are not willing to spend that money. Thank you. When the economy is not growing very fast, the effects are felt by many businesses and individuals. We went to the seaside town of morecambe to get an insight into how the sluggish growth affects businesses there. Brewing is a delicate art. A bit like managing the economy. A year of slow growth, with businesses feeling the pressure from rising costs, means its no surprise that many are feeling cautious about their ambitions for branching out. Weve struggled to try to work out a rationale for expanding. So were growing to develop a Whiskey Warehouse very shortly, but that should have happened two years ago. Weve held back because of the market, because of the commercial situation. But weve got two impacts weve got the internal pressure, which is the cost of food and drink, and then weve got the external pressure, which is the lack of money in peoples pockets. So we have been hit by sort of two forces at the same time which, in our 20 years of doing this, has never happened before. When gdp is rising, in theory, all things flow a bit more easily, meaning people often spend more as more jobs are created and there are better pay rises around. But instead, right now, many households are cutting back. We havent been abroad. We havent been abroad for a long time, have we . No, its too expensive. And it was covid and now this. Yes, yes. Obviously, covid happened and everything seemed to go up after covid. So by the time life was back to normal, no one is really in a boat where they can do what they want to do. Were not too badly off, but as a matter course, but, as a matter course, we cut down on the things simply because you cantjust keep paying increased costs. So you are careful with using energy and youre careful with what you pay forfood or anything else, for that matter. I have had a recent bereavement, a widower, so im on one income now, so im really feeling the pinch and ive really noticed how prices are rising everywhere, even for the simplest commodities. Its getting really tough, to tell you the truth. And looking at the Tourist Industry at this time of year is a good way to get a window into whats going on with our economy. Businesses with decades of experience in our Summer Spending habits have a keen eye for fluctuations. People still are spending money, yes, but the spending patterns have changed quite dramatically. So the Booking Window for certainly this area used to be 7 10 days, where people would book and then come to stay. That has shortened very significantly to 1 3 days. We have had to increase prices because our costs have increased. Food costs have gone up double digits, energy costs have doubled for us, Staffing Costs again, double digits. So we have had to reflect that in the prices that we then put out. The uk has beenjudged by many experts to be one of the worst performing at the moment among the worlds biggest economies. A recession was avoided earlier this year, meaning a slightly more hopeful picture. But still, little to write home about. The government has made it a key aim to get the economy growing faster. We found out this morning 0. 2 growth in the Second Quarter. That is the latest gdp figure but still playing into a picture of sluggish growth and the government will be looking for the bounce back from the pandemic to come. Studio thanks. We are going to talk about Shirley Ballas. Famous for strictly come dancing. She is challenging herself to do extraordinary things this week. And taking on a terrifying wing walk. The Ballroom Legend is facing her fear of heights in a series of challenges, to raise awareness around the importance of mental health, after losing her brother to suicide. Tim muffett reports. My brother was my hero. He said you will push yourself to be all you can be, because i see one day you will be a great dancer, you will do something with your life. And i will never forget those words. He was always there for me, 24 7. Doesnt matter if i was getting bullied, he was the man who stood behind me. Yeah, ijust miss him. Shirleys Brother David took his own life in 2003 aged 44. This week, in his memory, shirley is tackling her fear of heights head on. This is terrifying. Why have you decided to take on these challenges . I wanted to do something unique and special that could grab the attention of the public to understand we want to bring suicide Out Of The Dark and into the light. My ultimate wish is that people realise Life Is Worth Living and that there are people to talk about it. The challenge began with a zip wire. How was that . The zip line was terrifying. I tried to stay focused and breathe. I learned that as a dancer, and to put that in my mind and just stay focused. What are your thoughts about the wing walk . I am extremely nervous. Ifelt ill all morning, i did not sleep, i got emotional in the car. I dont ever remember being this nervous. Ive got pictures of my brother close to my chest here and i and doing this for all of you out there you have ever lost a loved one. Here we go, shirley. Ten out of ten for braveness. Suicide is the uks biggest killer of men under the age of 50 and the charity that shirley is raising money for, the campaign against living miserably, says its staff receive a call every 59 seconds. I didnt realise such a volume of people that are struggling. And now i am doing this campaign and challenge, the messages that im getting. So i want to say to everybody, i hope you never experience what i have experienced. Reach out, Life Is Worth Living. Shirley, give us a wave how was that, it looked amazing. That was an experience. I have to say i am glad i have my two feet firmly on the ground. But i did find myself more nervous than any more nervous than any championship ever danced in my life. I had my brother close to my heart, trapped here, and ijust kept reminding myself im doing it for everybody s loved ones, including my own, who have lost someone to suicide. It is not over yet, you have the big one, the skydive, on saturday. I went into this week nervous. I am conquering my fears as i go along but the biggest one is yet to come and that Isjumping Out of a plane, so quite terrifying, but i will be there, ready to go. Two down, one more challenge to go. Please donate. Stick with me, thank you. Another challenge to come. And we are talking to her on monday as i understand. There is an aeronautical theme. A Balloon Festival is taking place this weekend and john maguire is up in the air with those celebrating and reminiscing. Good morning. We havejust cleared the city of bristol. Flying towards bath. Looking for a place to land. Those green fields look like a soft place for the pilot to take as a lad. The balloons flying with pink ribbons, with the idea to remind them of pete gregory. Believing is a small family relatively, pete and his brother and dan and dad. All keen. Pete tragically died. The family are raising funds to buy a balloon to inspire the next generation of pilots. Balloons are expensive to fly. The idea is to have one that can be loaned out to someone who wants to take part in this sport. A sombre start perhaps in the Pilot Briefing before we had the mass ascent. But spectacular this morning as you look across. Not a bad day. Just about dodging the cloud as well. Join us back at the Bristol Festival after news where you are this morning. Hello, good morning from bbc london. Im nicky ford. The building was first built in 1811, it was a much smaller building then. The central line has minor delays but theres a good service on all other lines. Now lets take a look at the weather with georgie. Thats it from me but theres plenty more on our website, including the story of the former gang leader turned pastor who now runs a church. Ill be back in around half an hour. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. The time is 7 31am. In the last half hour, Junior Doctors in england have started another four day strike. Its theirfifth time doing so in this dispute, which is about pay and conditions. Joining us to discuss this further is sirJulian Hartley, the Chief Executive of nhs providers. Always worth establishing where you sit in terms of the bigger system and your view of these strikes. Hhs and your view of these strikes. Nhs roviders and your view of these strikes. Iifis providers represents 219 trusts across the english nhs, so we speak for our members, all of whom are affected by the strikes, and obviously desperate to see a resolution to this because it is really having an impact. What our members do, trusts, during strike periods, we ensure there is consultant cover for thejunior we ensure there is consultant cover for the Junior Doctors to ensure Patient Safety is prioritised. I have to say, in terms of your point, of course that does mean significant numbers of routine operations, appointments, procedures have to be stood down in order to prioritise the most urgent and important services. Cumulatively since strikes began, we are in our ninth month of Strike Action, around 800,000 operations, procedures, appointments have had to be stood down and rearranged as a consequence, so it has an impact on patients in terms of longer Waiting Times. And so on. Trusts do their best during the strike period but inevitably a lot of activity is stood down. Ahead of time, because they know when Strike Actions take place, trusts schedule fewer patients to come in. The Headline Figures are one thing but also there are obviously operating theatres, Outpatient Facilities that arent being used fully as a consequence of the strikes. There has been Back Consequence of the strikes. There has been back and consequence of the strikes. There has been back and forth consequence of the strikes. Trusts, leadership of trusts, doctors, clinicians, all staff are desperate to deliver for patients and they are wanting to innovate, create elective hubs to treat more patients, but the challenge at the moment is with an underlying shortage of staff, which predates the strikes, that is why the nhs has published a long term workforce plan to address that, but the strikes show some of those underlying weaknesses we have. I appreciate the point. One last thought, talking about staff shortages, is it getting worse or better . Are you recruiting more now than you were . Than you were . It varies trust to trust in terms of staff numbers but there is no doubt there is a realfocus notjust on recruitment but also retention, because a lot of staff decide to leave the nhs of course, but the importance of retaining, and doing other things trusts are trying to positively retain staff, but that is made harder if Strike Action continues. It is decision time for spurs and england captain harry kane. Born and bred in north london, but now theres the prospect of uprooting his family and moving to bavaria, and joining the german champions Bayern Munich. There is the lure of Champions League footbal. And bayern and tottenham have agreed a deal in principle for kane, in a deal that would be worth around £86 million. So it is now down to kane himself, who has one year left on his contact and is now 30. Spurs kick off at brentford on sunday, amid this angst for kane and for fans, who seem resigned to it now. So it remains unclear whether kane will be a part of the new premier League Season, which starts tonight. Defending champions Manchester City starting away at newly promoted burnley, who are managed by former city captain Vincent Kompany. And after going up as winners of the championship, and playing an attractive style of football, it does seem like an exciting new era at the traditional lancashire club, as i found out yesterday. Junior doctors in england begin another four day strike theres a warning it will cause significant disruption for patients. At least 53 people have died in ferocious wildfires in hawaii officials warn the death toll will continue to rise. The economy grew by 0. 2 in the uk in the Second Quarter of this year. The government says it is a Strong Foundation. Laboursaid the government says it is a Strong Foundation. Labour said growth is still on the floor. The new premier League Season begins today and one of the top strikers, harry kane, must decide if hes going to be part of it as Bayern Munich and tottenham, agree a deal in principle for the england captain. We had rain overnight but that is mostly clearing with sunny spells developing. We will see showers today. Not as warm as yesterday but i will have the forecast shortly. Its friday, the 11th of august. Our main story. Junior doctors in england started a four day strike at 7am. In a long running pay dispute involving half of all doctors working in the uk continues. Former teacher Margaret Gotheridge is trying to plan a holiday, but she also needs to get a new Pacemaker Battery fitted. For the lowest paid doctors, the deal is worth 10. But i think what we do need is a pay deal from government that acknowledges the amount of pay weve lost and acknowledges inflation moving forwards, and making sure that it doesnt happen again. One of the places where doctors will be Picketing Today is St Thomas Hospital in Central London. Louisa pilbeam is there for us. Good morning. They will be joining picket lines across england today. Because talks with the government have completely stalled. The government said they have offered a fair and the important word final offer of 8. 8 average for Junior Doctors. The doctors are not happy and say they will continue to strike until they get a better deal. Strike action will continue. The nhs is reminding people they have cover on the wards and they are saying you can call 999 and 111 in a non emergency. They say gp surgeries and pharmacies are largely unaffected so you do have options and there is cover for you. Studio thanks. We will have more on that later in the programme. We have been seeing shocking pictures from hawaii where there have been wildfires. Overnight, authorities updating the casualty numbers. At least 53 people have died in wildfires on the island of maui in hawaii, after what Officials Say is the largest Natural Disaster in the states history. At least three major blazes broke out on tuesday and spread across the island. A thousand people are still missing. Sean dilley reports. A community in smouldering ruins. Many homes here in lahaina burnt to charred wrecks. Here in lahaina, Rescue Efforts are moving more quickly now that winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour have died down. Military resources opening up a path for rescuers to search for survivors and to recover those who have died. Authorities in lahaina say their 150 year old scorched fig tree should recover, but it may take far longer to regrow a community robbed of so many houses and hundreds of years of history. Sean dilley, bbc news. In the past hour, weve had the latest gdp figures come through, which give an indication of the health of the uk economy. Lets get some more details from emma vardy whos in lancaster everyone knows these are difficult times with the cost of living crisis, but what do the statistics, what picture do they paint . That gdp figure out in the last hour shows the uk economy grew by 0. 2 in the Second Quarter. It is marginally better than the 0. 1 growth we saw in the first quarter. But it still shows things are difficult and plays into the Bigger Picture of a year of slow or next to no growth. Why does that matter . The government wants to get the economy growing because when businesses make more money there are more goods and services produced and means in general, we can start to feel better off, maybe buy a new car, things like that. But at the moment, with things more difficult, Interest Rates high, less money in the pocket, less to spend, businesses getting less money into profits and therefore they are less ambitious about expansion plans and things like that. The 0. 2 , what is the reaction . The chancellor says it is laying a Strong Foundation for growth, the government hoping to get the economy growing faster and painting an optimistic picture. Labour say this is still not good news. They say growth is on the floor. Over the past year, we have seen predictions we could slip into recession. That still has not happened so still a more hopeful picture but a lot of economists stilljudging the uk economy to be struggling to bounce back from the pandemic compared to other Major Economies Around The World. More than 100,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats in the past five years. The government started the official count in 2018, but it doesnt include those who made it across without being intercepted by the authorities. Our Reporter Simonjones joins us from dover. I understand several other boats are out in the channel, trying to make the crossing. Yesterday was an extremely busy day with hundreds of people making the crossing. We will get confirmation of figures at around ten oclock. And that will take us beyond the 100,000 milestone. In terms of yesterday, there was a dramatic rescue because a boat started sinking. Four lifeboats were sent to pluck 17 people out of the water. The french Authorities Say they came to the aid of 66 people in two boats. Eight people in one boat that got stuck between sand banks. When the french authorities tried to come to the aid of those people initially they refused, because they were desperate to get to uk waters. But after being stuck several hours, the people on board finally agreed to their rescue. Forthe board finally agreed to their rescue. For the government that has promised to stop the boats, this 100,000 figure is an unwelcome milestone. This week the government has announced initiatives and says it will help to reduce the number of crossing such as a new agreement with social Media Companies to stop smugglers advertising the crossings and also the first people moved onto the barge on the south coast. The reality is the government will be judged by those numbers and the numbers are proving to be problematic still. Studio thank you. When the weathers nice, many children love nothing more than to get one of those big, colourful slushie drinks. Ido i do not particularly like those but they are popular. Today there is a story about what it is they contain. But Research Suggests these shouldnt be given to very young children, who could be at risk of intoxication from them. Its related to glycerol, a liquid in these drinks which prevents them from freezing solid and gives them slush like properties. But too much glycerol can cause sickness and headaches. As a result, the Food Standards Agency and food standards scotland is advising children under four shouldnt be given these drinks at all, and theyre also warning retailers not to offer refill retailers not to offer retail promotions to under 10s. An 80 year old man with parkinsons disease and a mother and daughter who won their place in a competition have become virgin galactic s first space tourists. They were flown to the edge of space and experienced zero gravity, before returning to earth. Sophie long reports from the spaceport in new mexico. Cheering. Making the final footsteps towards realising their dreams. How are you feeling . Feeling great jon goodwin and mother and daughter duo Keisha Schahaff and ana mayers make their way to the Spaceship Unity. Then, at 8. 30 local time, lift off on schedule and in perfect conditions. This is the Momentjon Goodwin has been waiting for a quarter of his life. He is now on his way to space on virgin galactic s first private passenger flight. Three, two, one, release, release, release. And this is what its all about. As the Spaceship Unity hit apogee more than 50 miles above the earths surface. Congratulations tojon, to keisha, to ana on becoming astronauts today. And a special congratulations to our unity pilot kelly for her first space flight. Three minutes of weightlessness and views of our planet that only astronauts have ever experienced. You are so much more connected to everything than you would expect to be. Like, you felt like a part of the team, a part of the ship, a part of the universe, a part of earth. It was incredible. We welcome our crew back as they come in for landing. As unity glided back down to the new mexico desert, there was jubilation and relief. Im still up there and its just amazing that you can land so smoothly on the runway coming back from space. Safely back on earth, jon told me his experience was better than he ever imagined it would be. Looking at earth from space, the curvature of the earth, the blackness of space the pure clarity was amazing. In 2014, you got diagnosed with parkinsons. Three years ago, you went up kilimanjaro. Today, you went to space. How are you going to top this . Whats next Forjon Goodwin . The great thing of waiting 18 years was it wasnt a problem. Id got something to look forward to, which very few other people had done. And that has now happened. I suppose ive got to go to the moon. A giant leap for those on board and a major milestone for space tourism, at least for those who can afford it. Tickets currently cost more than £350,000. Sophie long, bbc news, spaceport america, new mexico. Have you ever received the bill at the end of a meal whilst abroad and spotted charges you didnt expect . Well, one couple visiting italy was left stunned after the receipt for a meal showed an unexpected extra two euro charge. They both realised theyd been billed for having their toasted sandwich cut in half. And it turns out, there are plenty of extras you can be charged for. For example, a charge based on the view that you have when sat at a restaurant or cafe. Or if a band plays near to where you are sitting. You might even be charged for opting to sit down for table service, instead of propping yourself up at the bar or counter. We asked you for your experiences and this is what you told us. Mark got in touch saying, we were charged double in venice because we sat outside. Carrying on with that theme, another message reads. Another viewer says. Lets now speak to the independent s travel correspondent simon calder. It is good to see you in the newsroom in london. A lot of people quite surprise. Italy. People surprised. Quite surprise. The proprietor of the bar at the northern end of lake como says i have to wash up two plates, have another place setting, so that is normal. In america, the so called split plate charge of typically 5, about £4, is pretty standard in a number of places. If you want to share a main course, you often have to pay extra, although i do not think i have seen a charge for an extra spoon if you are sharing desert. But viewers are right. It is Standard Practice in italy and also places like france, where the lowest price is if you are perched at the bar and the highest price if you are enjoying the sunshine outside at a table. Saint marks square in venice is absolutely the place where you are most likely to be surprised by the bill. First, your coffee is likely to cost upwards of 12 euros. That is £10. And if the band strikes up while you enjoy your coffee, that is another 6 euros, £5, added to the bill you were not expecting. Hahn euros, £5, added to the bill you were not expecting. There are plenty of other places in the side streets of venice where you can get a perfectly good Espresso Coffee perched at the bar for 1. 15 euros, £120 or so, and you do not need to fret about it. 1. 50 euros. There is also the cover charge which is up to four euros in italy, which covers the bread and olives. You might not spot it in tiny print on the menu but it is common in my local italian in south london. They have a cover charge, £2. 50, and they are upfront about it. Other charges, my goodness, people in prague, i heard people were charge for the salt and pepper and catch up on the table, even though they were only drinking beer and did not need the condiments. Junior doctors in england have started another four day strike. Its their fifth time doing so, in this dispute, which is about pay and conditions. The amountJunior Doctors earn is complicated and depends on things like what stage of their career theyre at, and where they live in the uk. Our health reporterjim reed has been speaking to two doctors about the amount they earn. What have you been finding out . You have been having a look at payslips and trying to work out, because people have been confused about who gets paid what. Yes. Because people have been confused about who gets paid what. About who gets paid what. Yes, pay for unior about who gets paid what. Yes, pay forJunior Doctors about who gets paid what. Yes, pay forJunior Doctors is about who gets paid what. Yes, pay forJunior Doctors is fiendishly for Junior Doctors is fiendishly complex forJunior Doctors is fiendishly complex and is at the centre of this dispute. We will try to talk you through it using real life examples. I will start with doctor robert. He is finishing his first year as a Junior Doctor, graduated from medical school last summer, working full time, 48 hours on average per week, Infectious Diseases ward of a big hospital in london. We asked him to show us his payslip. You will see from this, his basic pay rate of just over £14 an hour. There are some additional payments, a couple of hundred lbs for a night shifts and weekends, and these are compulsory, part of his rotor, he doesnt have a choice. At the end of the month, his take home pay after things like pensions, other deductions like tax on student loans, it isjust deductions like tax on student loans, it is just over £2100, working out as an annual salary with all those additional payments of just about £37,000. He says he is looking to work abroad for a while, possibly in australia. To be honest, i alwaysl wanted to do that even when i was in medical school. What has changed recently, though, i is i am not confident that the pay. Here is going to improve as much. As id like it to, and if that isnt. The case then i would really quite strongly consider staying in australia. He finished his first year as a Junior Doctor but as doctors get more skills and more experience they can start to move up these different pay grades. This is what this dispute is all about. The government at the moment has made what it says is a final offer to increase these grades by an average ofjust under 9 , the bma says it is nowhere near good enough, it has been asking for a 35 increase to make up for years, it says, of below inflation rises. Lets talk about a doctor further along in her career, this is dr kiran. Graduated from medical school in 2011, more than ten years ago, yet still a Junior Doctor, partly because she works part time, she has a young family, she took three years out of her training in the nhs for maternity leave. She is a paediatric registrar, so day to dayjob in a hospital she could be in charge of a childrens ward, in charge of paediatric ent. Lets look at her wage slip, you will see her basic pay is £28 an hour, double what robert was earning at the start of his career, and again some extra payments for night shifts and weekends. She says this dispute is about pay and also about widerjob and working conditions. I have seen a decline in sort of the morale, in the working environment, in the safety of our working environment, in our working conditions, in my own sort of living practice. So this is not something i can say maybe it never used to be i have seen it deteriorate, you know, the team ethos, the team morale. An example from two differentJunior Doctors. The government positions as the latest pay offer is final and balances the need to keep inflation in check and recognising the work Junior Doctors do. Junior doctors do. Really interesting Junior Doctors do. Really interesting looking Junior Doctors do. Really i interesting looking through Junior Doctors do. Really interesting looking through the detail of that. Were nowjoined by the dr emma runswick, deputy chair of the bma council. For a lot of people it is useful to see that breakdown on a payslip and maybe we can talk about robert first, the first example, people will understand various parts but to the basic pay before tax was just over £14 an hour, the actual sum he earns per hour. A lot of these arguments between you and the government have been one way or another about that basic pay. Absolutely. We say that after five or six years of medical school, taking responsibility for peoples lives, it is completely appropriate forJunior Doctors to be paid from 19 or £20 an hour, the equivalent of what they were paid in 2008. We are asking for pay restoration, not a pay rise. We think that is perfectly reasonable and i think most people watching would say thatJunior Doctors should earn £19 or £20 an hour. Doctors should earn £19 or £20 an houn doctors should earn £19 or £20 an hour. ,. ,. , doctors should earn £19 or £20 an hour. , ,. ,. ,. ,. Hour. The second example was a much more senior hour. They have looked at the independent pay review and say they have gone with it, that is the body often charged with taking into account all the arguments and situations and coming up with a number. When you have looked at the working out, you have made clear you dont accept it as independent but have you looked at the working out of what they have applied or not . They have looked at a variety of factors including recruitment, we are currently 900010,000 doctors short in secondary alone, they look at salaries of other groups, including others that are also being held down below inflation. We have lost more than 30 of our pay in real terms since 2008. We have hundreds and thousands of colleagues moving abroad, australia, new zealand, canada. You havejust heard from some colleagues that conditions are getting worse in the nhs. You heard earlierfrom are getting worse in the nhs. You heard earlier from singerJulian Hartley that there are lots of vacancies, struggling from sir Julian Hartley. Waiting lists. We will not be able to solve. Sir juuan will not be able to solve. Sir Julian Hartley is not of the negotiations but he said the same question, these strikes are making Waiting Lists worse, it is just reality. There is a sense of deja vu about this. You know what some people at home will be saying. Today my appointment for myself, my child, my appointment for myself, my child, my loved one, it is not happening because of what you are doing. That remains a reality. We can hear the arguments and look at the payslips but the reality is that someone does not get care. We but the reality is that someone does not get care not get care. We have made a judgment not get care. We have made a judgment about not get care. We have made a judgment about whether not get care. We have made a judgment about whether we i not get care. We have made a judgment about whether we want that to continue forever, whether we want it to continue getting worse, or whether we are prepared to take action in the short term to fix it. None of us want to be in a position where people dont get the care they need and they deserve. I am fed up apologising to patients, having seen them after six months, eight months, they have been waiting, i think it is unacceptable. I am prepared, as are many colleagues, to take action to reverse that in the future so that we have an nhs where patients get sufficient and timely care from a well staffed service. We also heard from nhs providers about the Practical Implications of the strikes. It is 19 minutes to nine. British Sign Language is an officially recognised language, and some in the uk are able to sit exams in bsl. But for science students, many crucial words have been missing. Bayern munich and tottenham had agreed a deal in principle for kane, in a deal that would be worth around £86 million. So it was then just a matter for kane himself, who has one year left on his contract and is now in his 30s. He has been given permission to go to munich today and is set to have a medical at the german champions. We will watch this space to see if he takes that flight to germany. Some more breaking transfer news this morning, and liverpool have agreed a british record fee of £111 million for brighton midfielder moises caicedo. Brighton had rejected a series of bids from chelsea and had set a minimum fee of 100 million, for caicedo, which they felt no one would reach. He is only 21 as well. Liverpool have now done that, which leaves the ecuador internationalfree to go for a medical. There are still three weeks to go until the transfer window closes, so expect more big deals before then, after the new premier League Season kicks off tonight. Defending champions Manchester City start away at newly promoted burnley, who are managed by former city captain Vincent Kompany. Hes part of an exciting new era at the traditional lancashire club, lancashire club, which is full of optimism, having been promoted as winners of the championship, as i found out when i went to burnley yesterday. Burnley back in the big time, returning to the Premier League just a year after relegation and this time with a swagger, prompting unbridled emotion from one of the clubs more famous young fans. None of the burnley fans will ever forget that day. You can tell by that video how much it meant to me. It was a really, really special day, it was two days before my birthday as well so it was a nice birthday surprise. Hughie and freddie spent the last few years raising over £300,000 for manchester childrens hospital, where hughie has been treated for an acute form of leukaemia. This season they will continue their Charity Challenge of walking one kilometre at every Premier League and efl ground with a more confident swing in their step now. Hopefully well get a good result. Fred has a good stat. Every year we have been promoted to the Premier League, weve beaten the champions of the previous season, so i think we will win. One of the special things about burnley is its famous turf moor stadium has stood in the centre of the town since 1883, embedded in the history of this community, just a throwing distance from the rows of houses, the cafes, the pubs, all claret and blue through and through. This is one reason that one of americas most famous sporting couples fell in love with the club. Indeed it is what prompted former nfl starjj watt and his wife, kealia, a Usa International footballer, to invest time and money in the club. Before the opening match, i caught up with jj prior to his flight overnight. Its an extremely exciting time with the club. Obviously its a club thats been around for a very long time, but for us to be back in the Premier League where we feel like we belong, with a massive match coming up friday night against man city, all the history between vince and city, its very exciting for us to kick off the season with champions of the championship versus champions of the Premier League. Its going to be a great one. These players will pinch up, these players slide. Over the over the top, always over the top, tiki taka, tiki taka, tiki, goal. Jjs social media videos of him learning all about football from his wife have been watched by many millions across the world, putting burnley on the global stage. The thing i knew coming over as an american and investing in a European Football Club is that people are very protective of their clubs and very sceptical of americans coming in from the outside. And burnley fans and supporters have been incredible since day one, they have been very welcoming to us, and all were trying to do is show them how much respect we have for their history, their club, and all we want to do is help amplify that and show the world why burnley is so special. Afterjoining the burnley family in may, jj experienced the tradition of a fans pub crawl soaking up the pre match atmosphere at the famous pubs next to the ground. He came with his wife, they were a lovely couple, they fell in love with the pub straightaway and they came back the following day as well, they loved it that much. Just really overwhelming for me that a big star like jj watt, especially like america as well, because you dont know if they understand the pub culture, the british pub culture, do they understand it . He absolutely loved it. Its notjust the local pubs and businesses glowing in the glory of promotion and the clubs new global fame, but the clubs Summer Community projects, which have been booming, with burnley shirts now dominant. It makes everyone very lively and stuff. They get a lot more excited because they have been promoted and that is a really good thing. What difference has being back in the Premier League made to you and made to these sessions and excitement . Nothing. I dont follow burnley. The community is brilliant at burnley. Weve always had high numbers, high attendance when we were in the championship but, yeah, definitely the promotion has helped a little bit, especially with the excitement with the big game coming up, Manchester City, all the kids are talking about it on camps and different projects. It is very inspiring because i also play for a team, i think it is really inspiring, yeah, i like it. Burnley have been promoted before but not like this, with so much hope and belief for the next generation, a new style of football and a bright new dawn. This picture from stoke on trent, decent sunny spells in many parts of the uk at the moment. One or two showers out there. Those are most likely in south western parts of england, early rain clearing into the Northern Isles. Today, showers developing across Northern Ireland into scotland, one or two elsewhere, with cloud thickening in the far South East Of England, but still quite warm here. Temperature is 2526. Quite warm here. Temperature is 25 26. Elsewhere temperatures down by a few degrees, 20 24. Into the weekend, this low pressure moves in for the fifth weekend in a row, low pressure dominating the weather. Fairly unsettled but not a wash out, not as bad as last weekend when we had storm anthony moving through. But there will be some showers moving from the south west into the north east of the uk. Lengthy dry spells in between the showers with some sunshine. Showers could be on the sharp side with maybe some thunder but you would be unlikely to catch those thunderstorms. Maximum temperature is 19 24, so where you have the sunshine it will not feel too bad, pleasantly warm through the afternoon. Plenty of usable whether its how to phrase it for saturday. On sunday, similar, some showers in the forecast, still the area of low pressure to the north west of the uk driving the showers from the south west. Most frequent across scotland and Northern Ireland, a few showers into wales in the south west of england. Towards east, south and south eastern areas of england a bit drier on sunday. Next week, this area of low pressure moves away with one or two weather systems going with it and then a High Pressure builds on through next week, so for many of us a bit more settled than recently. A little bit of rain at times, one or two showers, especially monday and tuesday, but wednesday to the end of the week plenty of dry weather and some sunshine as well. Temperatures 1824, sunshine as well. Temperatures 18 24, again about the average, perhaps rising further on friday into the weekend but for a School Summer holiday next week is looking pretty good actually. You go and recover, lie down from the exertion of the header. People will be looking carefully at the weather in bristol today. The bristol Balloon Fiesta is taking place once again this weekend. Its an important event for thousands of people, but for one family, its a poignant time. John maguire explains. If ever anyone was born to fly, it was pete gregory. John maguire, bbc news. You can understand why it will be such a special event for peters family. You might have seen earlier on, the bones taking offer about six orseven on, the bones taking offer about six or seven oclock this morning, the conditions were right. Conditions were right. About 100 takin i conditions were right. About 100 takini off, conditions were right. About 100 taking off. And conditions were right. About 100 taking off, and there conditions were right. About 100 taking off, and there is conditions were right. About 100 j taking off, and there is definitely a sense of community which i think the family will be experiencing as they remember their loved one, peter. Youre watching bbc breakfast. Its 8 59. The important question, what do we do about the boats, fascinating to know what you think and how important it is in your list of political priorities. It is intensely political, thought to be done about the boats were what do they know . Officialfigures done about the boats were what do they know . Official figures out this morning on small boats coming from france show more than 100,000 migrants have arrived in the uk in small boats in the last five years. Yesterday more than 700 people. So it is the boats and as i say it is political, their votes as well. The backlog of claims, the rwanda plan, the borage, the call for a tougher push back policy is in the newspapers today.
