virgin forest still exists here in the amazon, but every day the illegal loggers get closer. from up high, you can see the damage done, the large patches of land totally cleared. this part of brazil has the highest rate of deforestation in the country. underjair bolsonaro, illegal logging soared. president lula da silva has promised to fix the problem. translation: the challenges. of our era and the opportunities that arise demand joint action. we need to reconcile environmental protection and social inclusion, encourage science, technology and innovation, encourage the local economy, fight international crime, and value the indigenous people and traditional communities and their ancestral knowledge. for those living under the rainforest's canopy, it's been a difficult few years. translation: you have no idea how much pressure - there was in our community under the bolsonaro government. landowners, circling planes, soya farmers wanting to buy the land to deforest it. cockerel crows he, though, didn't get bought out. instead, he wants to grow sustainable crops like acai. he's part of a booming carbon credit industry here. companies emitting carbon dioxide can buy credits from projects like hobson*s and that should help reduce emissions, but not everyone is convinced. bianca and herfamily, like many in the region, want better services like schools and health centres. but they are suspicious of these new carbon credit companies offering to help them. translation: it is not that transparent. - we cannot see how it would give us a secure life. we are always on the back foot and fear the consequences. because of the stories we heard, we decided not to sign a contract. and that is a problem. when people struggle to get by, and when the state fails to help them, it is easier to accept money from lucrative illegal logging. ensuring the amazon's future means improving the lives of nearly 50 million people who live here. just to get to this part of the amazon, it took 13 hours overnight on a riverboat, and now this smaller boat, to get to the communities here. but if you look on a map, it all looks so close together, and itjust goes to show how vast the amazon is, but also how difficult it is to navigate, and ultimately, also, how difficult it will be for lula to achieve his zero deforestation by 2030. which is why he needs the backing of all of the countries who share the amazon. leaders are expected to offer solutions to illegal logging and mining, moving away from big infrastructure projects. but money talks, and without offering a better life for those who live in the forest, any discussion of conservation is pointless. katy watson, bbc news in belem. we can actually take you live now to belem to join katy watson who is standing by their for us. belem to join katy watson who is standing by theirfor us. it's really lovely to see you. what a fantastic backdrop you have behind you. so they have come to some kind of agreement but there are campaigners and indigenous leaders who are disappointed. they wanted more, what further measures where they calling for?— they calling for? and i think that is the issue. you got eight countries working together in a massive area, a very difficult area, very difficult terrain. i think nobody isn't of wanting to try and make things better, but far they can go i think is the question everyone is asking. president lula is obvious and _ everyone is asking. president lula is obvious and essential— everyone is asking. president lula is obvious and essential to - everyone is asking. president lula is obvious and essential to this. i everyone is asking. president lula | is obvious and essential to this. he is obvious and essential to this. he is not only the president of brazil, right now hosting this summit, but he has made it known that he wants things to change now that he is back in power. since he has taken over from his predecessor. have things change? {lilia of china is this not good news? 0k, lu , of china is this not good news? 0k, lucy. there — of china is this not good news? 0k, lucy. there are _ of china is this not good news? 0k, lucy. there are a — of china is this not good news? ok lucy, there are a few different things going on. the first is... none of them are good. the first is, if prices are falling it suggests there is a weakness in domestic demand. that isn't great if you're a country the size of china. so that's the first thing to bear in mind. the second is that it speaks to the fact that there is a full global demand more generally, a softening if you will. this had been the great concern. lots of people had thought, looking at inflation and is looking at the brakes on growth that are going on right across the world and here in this country too, there are lots of hopes on the chinese economy and the recovery there to try to lift and drive, be the engine of growth for the rest of the world. if in fact it is having the reverse effect, that is a huge problem. and we're also seeing this global trend of consumers post—pandemic, rather than spending on goods when we are all at home, clicking, buying stuff online, now we can all go out and do what we want and travel for example, that money is shifting to services. what do you do if you're an economy thatis what do you do if you're an economy that is essentially the factory of the world if you are not making as much stuff and not manufacturing is much stuff and not manufacturing is much to go to the rest of the world? that is not good for your economy as well. the problem with deflation is that if you already have ballooning levels of debt, as they do in china, and if you've got issues such as the housing market crisis, problems like youth unemployment. youth unemployment in that country is the highest it has ever been. the fact that prices falling is not good because it means profits are falling in that country. that might, in turn, lead to more unemployment which is not great. what do you do if you have a surplus of goods that you can't shift on your own market? you shove them onto the international market and if that happens and we get a flood of cheap goods coming on from china to the rest of the market, that puts pressure on the rest of the world. manufactures right across the world, what happens across china in terms of deflation is a concern for the rest of the world and there is a lot of worry about whether or not we might end up seeing a deflationary spiral or whether or not the chinese authorities might actually put their money where their mouth is on this and actually create some stimulus, perhaps may be lowering taxes, in order to prevent this happening and prevent a deflationary effect, a domino effect across the rest of the world. ., ~' ,, domino effect across the rest of the world. . ,, i. . india's opposition leader, rahul gandhi, has condemned prime minister, nardendra modi, in parliament today, in his first speech since his defamation convinction was suspended. mr gandhi criticised modi's response to recent ethnic violence in the manipur state, accusing him of "murdering mother india". it's said that at least 150 people have been killed in recent months in clashes in the north—eastern state between the hindu meitei and christian kuki communities. to india now where farmers are enjoying a windfall due to high tomato prices....forcing them off the menu in many restaurants — including international chains like subway and mcdonald's. these soaring prices will put pressure on india's central bank — which is making its latest interest rate decision later this week. now almost a month on, this humble tomato — which is really a vital ingredient in the base of most indian curries — is out of reach of most people here. it used to cost roughly about $0.30 to $0.40, but now retails at $2 a kilo in markets like these. and evidently, there's a lot of anguish as a result of that. translation: i've been selling i vegetables for 20 years, but never seen prices go so high. demand is definitely down. people who are buying five kilos earlier are now buying two kilos in anticipation that rates will come down by 20. now, there are many reasons why tomato prices have continued to go up. unseasonal rains and extreme weather not only damage the crop, but it's also made it difficult to transport it. then, of course, there are the longer term issues, things such as lack of adequate storage and processing infrastructure. none of this can be sorted out overnight, which is why tomato prices are now expected to go up even further before they begin cooling down in september once the new crop comes in. people like archana, who run a home catering business, are worried. there's definitely increased my budget and i can't increase the prices for my clients because, you know, we have ourfixed prices and have a fixed clientele. so it has definitely affected me because i can't make any profit, profit from that. along with tomatoes, prices of onions and other staple in indian cooking have been going up as well. and this is a worry notjust for politicians, but also for india's central bank. onions — or high prices of onions — have led to electoral defeats in this country, and they could also feed into higher consumer inflation at a time when the reserve bank of india is meeting later this week to decide on interest rates. nicola namdar, bbc news, mumbai. this place anti abortion companies in the us, particularly in the state of i hope and that is because coming up of i hope and that is because coming up in november, there is a vote scheduled to decide on whether to enshrine abortion in the state constitution. the vote we saw yesterday potentially could have made it more difficult for that to happen. as a big picture item here, all this goes back to the us supreme court last summer overturning roe v wade, that federal right to abortion kicking this back to the state. we are seeing this across the united states of various states trying to either enshrine the right to an abortion or get rid of it. by and large, we are starting to see it given over to the people and not just to the legislators that they want to keep this in some shape or form. all of this then plays into 2024, the presidential election, where abortion is proving to be a really big issue and potentially a really big issue and potentially a really big issue and potentially a really big driver to the polls, especially for democrats. big election issue, _ especially for democrats. big election issue, thanks so much jarred hill. joining us there from new york. around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news. bbc news, bringing you different stories from across the uk. fizz is no ordinary dog. thousands of hours of training have made her one of the top five detectives in the country. we put a facial wipe there. we're going to put one pinhead size and out of diesel. that's the size of a pinhead in there. and she'll pick that up? "should pollutions ever occur, they are always reported to the environment agency. any claim to the contrary is wholly and completely wrong." the case relies on laws introduced in 2015, and though dozens of cases are in the works, none has yet reached a successful conclusion. it could take years, but if the claim succeeds, customers could get compensation of around £40 each. but it's notjust about money. professor roberts hopes it will force water companies to clean up their act. ben king, bbc news. let's turn to scotland — all week we've been getting a taste of some of the thousands of prison for shooting fellow musician megan thee stallion in the foot three years ago. our reporter nicky schiller is in the newsroom with more details. i wanted to start by giving you a bit of background to this case, which involves one of the biggest hip hop stars in the world. now, three years ago, reality star kylie jenner hosted a pool party in the hollywood hills. during thejourney home, grammy award winner megan thee stallion and canadian rapper tory lanez got into an argument over a previous sexual relationship. now that row intensified, at which point megan demanded that she be let out of the vehicle. tory lanez began shooting to the ground and said that she should dance. now, megan needed surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot. tory lanez, seen here during the trial, always denied the shooting and even released an entire album to argue he was innocent. but he was found guilty in december last year and has now been sentenced to ten years in jail. his lawyer hit out at the length of the sentence. in this case, to get a ten year sentence is extreme and reallyjust another example of someone being punished for their celebrity status and someone being utilised to send an example. and he's not an example. he's a human being. this case was divisive in the hip—hop world. indeed, the sentencing hearing lasted two days as the judge said he had had 70 letters from friends and family in support of tory lanez. now, when megan gave evidence in december last year, supporters gathered outside the court with posters saying, "we stand with megan." she gave a victim impact statement in which she said she would never be the same, adding that "since i was viciously shot by the defendant, i have not experienced a single day of peace." now, prosecutors have praised her for coming forward, saying herfame has helped raise the issue of violence against women. the fact that ms pete is a successful entertainer has brought the spotlight on the important issue of violence against women. there are many people in our community that endure acts of violence every day from people close to them and feel reluctant to come forward when this happens. i hope that ms pete's bravery gives hope to those that feel helpless. tory lanez told the court that he considered he and megan were still friends. it is unclear whether the rapper, who has had seven top ten us albums in the last seven years, is now facing deportation to canada. finally this half hour on bbc news now, imagine winning a lottery jackpot of $1.5 billion dollars. a single ticket holder has in the us mega millions. the draw had rolled over 3! times until tuesday night. officials say the ticket was sold in florida. the holder — or holders — have a choice of a lump sim of 783 million or taking the full amount over 30 years. the jackpot is the third largest in us history — but we should point out the winnings are taxed. but still, that is a lot of money. 783 million or the full amount over 30 years. let's go to the website to show up story a lot of people are clicking on. it has long said that 10,000 steps as the number you need to stay fit and healthy but a new report says it is now fewer than 5000, may be enough to see a benefit. this was a huge study, 226,000 people around the world showed that 4000 steps was enough to start reducing the risk of dying prematurely of any cause. just over 2300 is enough to benefit the heart and blood vessels and the more you do, the more health benefits are seen which seem self—evident. every extra 1000 steps beyond the 4000 reduce the
