Hi there, thank you for being with us. We begin in ukraine, where at least five people have been killed in a Russian Missile attack on residential buildings in the eastern ukrainian town of pokrovsk. Ukraines Interior Minister reported that the strikes also injured at least 31 people. Among the injured are at least 19 police officers, five rescuers and a child. The head of the Donetsk Region said the strikes damaged a hotel as well as shops and administrative buildings. Meanwhile, ukraines Intelligence Agency announced that it arrested a woman in connection with an alleged assassination plot against president zelensky. The woman was allegedly preparing a russian air strike in the mikolaiv region during mr zelensky s visit to the area. Our ukraine Correspondentjames Waterhouse has the latest. So these are quite interesting allegations emerging from the southern mykolaiv region. Sources at the Security Service have told us theyve arrested a woman who is accused of travelling around the local area, taking pictures of Different Military sites and sharing them with her russian handlers. But these are part of a string of allegations which include her trying to get hold of the itinerary of an official visit by president zelensky and trying to share that with moscow, which would therefore help russia launch a major air strike during president zelensky s visit. That visit happened without any incident, and the woman was arrested shortly afterwards. Were told she is being investigated for a number of weeks. And notjust that there are claims that she worked in the local Military Shop at one of ukraines army bases in the south. Now, as the countrys wartime leader, president zelensky, sees Long Distance trips as being part of thejob description. Its important to him that he appears on the front line, as well as in cities and army bases, to try and keep the populations morale high. There have been reports of several attempts on his life, not least i remember early on in the invasion, when russias main aim was to topple his administration, to take him out and install a Puppet Official of their own. These allegations are a reminder of the risks he faces every time he travels outside of kyiv or even when he stays in kyiv, to be frank with you. Russia has not commented on these claims. James waterhouse reporting there. Lawyers for donald trump have opposed an attempt to limit what information he can make public about his prosecution on charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, saying it will limit his freedom of speech. Prosecutors asked the judge for an order limiting the disclosure of evidence, saying the former president might use it to intimidate witnesses. Our correspondent in los angeles, peter bowes, has more. This, of course, goes back a few days to that request for what is known as a protective order from the prosecution regarding the evidence in this case. This is the so called Discovery Phase of this trial. Its when the prosecution has to share has to share by law all the information that it has, all the evidence that its collected with the defence, so that, in this case, Donald Trumps side has time to consider the evidence that is going to be presented in court and prepare their defence. Thats whats happening now. But in this case and in others, its not that unusual, but in this particular case the prosecution want the protection order to, as you say, prevent donald trump making public some of this information. It could be transcripts of legal documents, it could be any aspect of evidence, and they want to prevent donald trump going on social media and writing about it. They want to prevent him talking about it in Television Interviews or even making a speech about it at one of his many rallies. Now, whats just happened in the last hour or so, Donald Trumps side have responded to that, saying that this is, in effect, attacking Donald Trumps right to freedom of speech. In a trial about First Amendment rights, they say, the government is seeking to restrict First Amendment rights, and they say that any protection should only apply to the most sensitive of documents. And, of course, this is not the only legal challenge that hes facing. Ajudge dismissing his Defamation Counterclaim against the writer Ejean Carroll as well. Yes, this goes back a few months. You remember, he was found liable legally liable for sexual assault. Ejean carroll, after this case was over, went on television and, in effect, implied that donald trump was guilty of rape. He countersued for defamation. And the judge has just thrown out that case, saying that donald trump hadnt proven his argument. Peter bowes reporting there. Now, lets bring your Summer Breaking News from niger. A senior american diplomat has met with the coup leaders in the Capital Niamey and said she had Frank And Difficult discussions. Victoria nuland, whos the acting deputy secretary of state, said the coup leaders had not agreed to restore the democratic order and did not let her meet the deposed president. She added that nigers coup leaders understood the risks of working with the Russian Mercenary Group wagner, which is active in neighbouring countries. Our reporter chris ewoker has more details on the situation in niger. The Militaryjunta Leaders In Niamey said they are not taking chances. They have alleged of some form of Military Deployment in preparation to invade a country in two Central African areas, but it didnt mention the name. So because of that, flights are diverted, and of course those who are flying even from within niger, there is a kind of disruption. But beyond that, aside from the closure of the airspace, we also have a situation where borders are closed. Although the Junta Leaders have opened their borders to other, some neighbouring african countries, nigerias border with niger and that of Republic Of Benin remain closed, and majority of their imports come from both nigeria and of course benin republic. This is also hurting businesses and has sparked increase in prices of foodstuffs. Nigeria has also cut electricity, which is also affecting the nigerien households tremendously. Chris ewoker reporting there. Lets take a look at some of the stories in the headlines in the uk. The bodies of three hill walkers who were reported missing on saturday have been found in glencoe in the Western Highlands in scotland. Coastguard helicopters had joined Mountain Rescue teams searching for the party of two men and a woman. Police say there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. Hospital consultants in england have announced new strike dates in september if the government doesnt agree to more pay talks. Ministers say their 6 offer is final. Really high pressure, you know . But we did it in the end very happy. I thought nigeria were a good team. Watching the prelims, watching the group stage, i was a little bit scared, not going to lie, but. They shout my heart was going. Yeah. That was tight. It was. One of the worlds longest serving leaders, hun sen of cambodia, has handed over power to his son. Hun manet has been appointed Prime Minister by cambodias king. Hun sen made the announcement after a landslide Election Victory injuly. Many analysts say stability was established, but critics say democracy was stifled under his rule. Our South East Asia correspondentjonathan head gave us more details of the new Prime Ministers background. Hun sens eldest son, hun manet, who is 45 years old, is now the new Prime Minister, although he has to go before parliament to have his new government confirmed in the next couple of weeks, but thats a mere formality, as well, because the ruling party, which is very much hun sens own vehicle, completely dominates parliament after an election in which the main opposition was actually banned from contesting it. So the new Prime Minister is a much younger face, a different generation. Little known, really. Hes been very prominent in the cambodian army. Hes western educated, unlike his father, who came up through the crucible of the khmer rouge revolution, a very sort of different background, but not tested in politics. Hes only really been active in politics in the last year or so. So nobody knows quite what kind of Prime Minister hes going to be. I think the hope is for hun sen that this is a gradual transition, that it doesnt create any dramatic changes and that his son gets a chance to bed down. Its a difficult thing to do. Hun sen has so dominated the country in these last 38 years. Hes come to almost personalise politics. He sits at the centre of a web of complex alliances with other powerful figures, all of whom are ambitious. Hes managed, very skilfully, played one off against the other, bought them off as well. But cambodias got lots of challenges. It has an economy very dependent on international demand. It has huge inequality, environmental destruction, massive corruption. These are all things that are going to challenge this new and untested man in charge of the country. For more, we can speak to lee morgenbesser, an expert on dictators at Australias Griffith University who has monitored hun sen for years. Hejoins me now from brisbane. Thank you so much forjoining us on newsday today. We just heard our correspondent s analysis son of hun sen, hun manet, is somewhat of an unknown litre. What do you think his rule will be . Will there be much difference from hun sen . There be much difference from hun sen . , ~. , hun sen . Good morning. At Least Initiall , i hun sen . Good morning. At Least Initially, i dont hun sen . Good morning. At Least Initially, i dont think hun sen . Good morning. At Least Initially, i dont think it initially, i dont think it will be many differences that we can see. Keep in mind he is still going to have to rule in the shadow of his father, so hun sen is essentially giving up hun sen is essentially giving up Office Rather than giving up power, so hun sen assuming the background to mr b president of the Cambodian Peoples Party but which is not provide a lot of opportunity to carveout his own portfolio of interest or ruling the way he may want, so this initially, i would not expect much change from hun manet s term in office. {iii manets term in office. Of course we manets term in office. Of course we mentioned a Landslide Victory in an election where a lot of the Opposition Leaders were not allowed to stand. Most in parliament belonged to the same party, but there has to be a confidence vote. Can you kiss l mac just a confidence vote. Can you kiss l macjust talk us through why that is . And you just . This that is . And you ust . This is an import h that is . And you ust . This is an import part that is . And you ust . This is an import part of that is . And youjust . This is an import part of the is an import part of the Cambodian Constitution as it was designed by the United Nations Intervention Forces in the early 1990s. It is essentially a rubber stamp. Keeping in mind that hun sen had to go to the same process after each Election Victory that he won, and so this is a mere formality in the sense that what really was import was the kings approval, which came through yesterday, and the now the parliament of which is dominated by the Cambodian Peoples Party, will sign off on this, and they already indicated last week that they would approve this measure anyway. It is really a formality, this is expected to pass very quickly. If formality, this is expected to pass very quickly. Pass very quickly. If hun sen is exnected pass very quickly. If hun sen is expected to pass very quickly. If hun sen is expected to hold pass very quickly. If hun sen is expected to hold still pass very quickly. If hun sen is expected to hold still a pass very quickly. If hun sen is expected to hold still a lot of power, why do you think he has appointed his son as his successor . Why notjust stay in office . I5 successor . Why not ust stay in office . ,. ,. Office . Is nearly perfect time to do it. Office . Is nearly perfect time to do it as office . Is nearly perfect time to do it. As a office . Is nearly perfect time to do it. As a dictator. Office . Is nearly perfect time to do it. As a dictator. In office . Is nearly perfect time to do it. As a dictator. In the | to do it. As a dictator. In the sense that there is never really. Political transition is known as the Achilles Heel in a dictatorship, because when this occurs, it can lead to instability and infighting, and it can be very dangerous for the country as a whole, and so in this instance, hun sen has actually timed it very well in the sense that he is still able to control the process. The risk of staying in power for, lets say, another ten or even 20 years of easy cannot control who gets power after him but also when they get it and the conditions of them getting it, so there are examples in recent years of dictators, such as Robert Mugabe in zimbabwe, waiting around until his late 90s to try and give power to his wife, and in the military ousted him in a coup. So there is a risk in going too long into power, and so i think this is well timed for hun sen. D0 is welltimed for hun sen. Do ou is welltimed for hun sen. Do you think is well timed for hun sen. Do you think eventually hun manet will be allowed to rule in his own way without any of the influence of his father . Yes, i think, though influence of his father . Yes, i think, though it influence of his father . Yes, i think, though it is influence of his father . Yes, i think, though it is probably i think, though it is probably still another term in office away. What we would expect to see is him to win another election in cambodia, in this case 2028, and then i would say you would have a bit more opportunity to rule the way he wants. But keeping in mind that in cambodia, the way political power is structured, it is still through these alliances and this Money Politics that exists, and so he still has to Pay Attention to that side of things, ratherthanjust Pay Attention to that side of things, rather thanjust going things, rather than just going out things, rather thanjust going out and doing what he wants to do. So there are some restraints on how he rules. Lee morgenbesser, restraints on how he rules. Lee morgenbesser, thank you so much forjoining us on newsday today. Lets turn now to a controversial policy in the uk thats attracted attention around the world. The first of possibly hundreds of migrants and Asylum Seekers have moved onto a giant barge docked in dorset, to be housed while they await the outcome of asylum applications. The government says the vessel will be better value than hotels costing £6 million a day. But campaigners have called it a shameful way to treat people. Danjohnson is in portland, where the barge is docked. Its been a difficultjourney getting to this point. This has been deeply controversial. And whether you are supportive or not, and there are all sorts of voices united in opposition to this, it is a moment, and it marks a key chain in the national attitude, the approach of the government, the state on behalf of us all, towards migrants, refugees, those potentially vulnerable and in need. And in truth, what happened here today was always going to bigger, about more than just this barge and these men, because this vessel is part of the governments answer to what has been such a difficult question a tough, National Debate that has been long standing and contentious. Danjohnson dan johnson reporting there. Thousands of scouts at an International Event in south korea are being evacuated from a campsite due to an incoming tropical storm. The uk and several other countries had already left, citing extreme hot weather and poorfacilities at the site. Je seung lee has more. First came the heatwave, now its a storm. A Contingency Plan has been put into action in south korea, with all scouts taking part in this years world Scout Jamboree being evacuated early from the campsite because of an incoming storm. Typhoon khanun is expected to make landfall on thursday, bringing with it heavy rain and strong gusts. Now, its a massive operation thats expected to last a few hours. 36,000 people from over 150 countries are being moved out of the site in this countrys southwestern coast to the capital seoul. Some 1,000 buses are being mobilised. The government said it made the decision because it was no longer safe to hold events there. It said it also listened to the concerns of the World Organization for Scout Movements and national delegations. Now, the event isnt ending early. Instead, the participants will continue with other activities in seoul and the surrounding area, including cultural experiences. Now, its worth mentioning that theres growing criticism towards the organising committee, as its been revealed that most of the budget allocated for the event, which is around 76 million, was spent on the committee itself rather than setting up the campsite, which was heavily criticised for its poor conditions, leading to a lot of the scouts falling ill from high temperatures. The american film director William Friedkin has died at the age of 87. He won the Best Director Oscar for the 1971 thriller the French Connection, but he was perhaps most well known for directing the iconic and controversial horror film the exorcist. The film, about a young girl possessed by the devil, was infamously banned in many countries, but it became one of the most successful and influentialfilms of all time. Here he is speaking about the exorcist in 2008. Its realistic. Theres no escape from it. It isnt like theres a lot of distance for the audience, like most of the films in the genre today, where you can laugh. I mean, there will be some laughs, but theyre nervous laughter based on tension. Earlier, i spoke to film critic siobhan synnot. She met him a few times and shared her memories. He was very charming, and in fact, he charmed my movie hating editor so much that he persuaded him to put his picture on the front page of my newspaper quite an achievement if you know my editor he was as well of course one of the highly regarded directors of the 1970s, up there with spielberg, scorsese, francis ford coppola, and i think his skill was really to treat what other people might have regarded as b movies with the utmost seriousness. So Something Like the French Connection, a cop movie, could have been a potboiler, but in his hands, it was something far more elevated than that, and he got an amazing performance out of gene hackman despite the fact that gene hackman felt that his character, popeye doyle, was morally referenceable and had to be pushed by friedkin to give his character, popeye doyle, was morally reprehensible and had to be pushed by friedkin to give his character its full weight. And the exorcist, he never regarded that as a horror movie, despite the spinning heads and the pea soup. He regarded it as a serious drama, a moral question. And when he felt the Energy On Set was not quite as energetic as he would like, he punched one of the characters, one of his actors, in the face notjust any old actor either, a priest wow, incredible stories there and also, at the age of 87, he actually had a new movie coming out . Thats right. He has a version of the caine mutiny, the Caine Mutiny Court martial. Thats going to be seen at the venice film festival, a chance to see one of our great film makers for the very last time. Sad news today, i think, with William Friedkin, but his films will carry onwards. Maybe he didnt achieve quite the same potential after the oscar wins for the French Connection and the excitment that surrounded the exorcist, but nevertheless he had something of a comeback with a film Called Killerjoe with matthew mcconaughey, and it is always worth seeing a William Friedkin film. Siobhan synnot, speaking to me a little earlier. 18 year old ana mayers and her mum Keisha Shahaff are set to make history as the first mother and daughter to go to space. Theyll also be the first people from the caribbean to make the journey. They won the voyage in a competition. Louise hosie reports. Welcome to space. It is a once In A Lifetime Adventure Few Of Us will ever experience. But for keisha and ana, their dream is on the edge of becoming a reality. They are about to become the first ever mum and daughter in space. They will be on board virgin galactic s unity spacecraft. To just have the experience to actually go to space and look at our amazing planet from that high and to just breathe that in and to just be in that energy is just super amazing. It brings out a lot of emotion in me because its something that ive wanted for so long and its happening. I know we will get to experience weightlessness and see the planet from out of space. I have no words to describe how i feel about experiencing that. Originally from antigua in the caribbean, ana is currently studying physics at Aberdeen University and hopes to eventually work for nasa. You and your mother are going to space. I we won her mum won their seats on the rocket after entering a competition she saw advertised on a flight as they travelled to get anas student visa. Ana believes it was written in the stars. Had i not randomly chosen Aberdeen University and had we not had to take a massive detour to get my visa, we wouldnt be going to space. This is cool ana hopes her example will inspire promising astronauts like some young people at this event in aberdeen. I think thats really cool, that people from aberdeen can go up into space. Its really amazing. How does it make you feel seeing the rocket and everything . Its great because i see the earth very well, i can see my house on earth. Youre going to be the first mother and daughter to ever go into space. How does that feel . It is so much more reassuring and so connecting to be able to do this with someone i love so much. The Virgin Space Flight takes off from new mexico on thursday. What an incredible journey for ana and keisha. A lot more on all the stories on our website. I will be back with Business News shortly, but for now, thank you for watching newsday. Hello there. Theres a promise of something a little bit warmerfor all of us towards the end of the week. But its going to be a short lived warm snap, as cooler, Wetter Conditions return for many northern and Western Areas over the weekend. For the next few days, its southern areas which will see the mist, the murk, the cloud, the rain. A bit brighter further north. This deep area of low pressure will bring all sorts of problems to scandinavia, with localised flooding, heavy rain and strong winds. But the Weather Front pushing in across the south of the uk for tuesday will be a much weakeraffair, bringing increasing cloud to the southern half of the country, with some patchy rain and drizzle, low cloud, some sea fog around south Western Coasts and into wales. But for northern england, northern ireland, scotland, bright with some sunny spells, one or two showers in north east scotland, where it will be windier, especially in the Northern Isles gusts up to 50 miles an hour here, with only 12 degrees in lerwick. But for the mainland of the uk, 16 to maybe 20 degrees from north to south. As we move through tuesday night, it looks like the showers, long spells of rain across the south of england clear away and it turns dry with lengthy clear spells. But it will continue to be windy in the north east of scotland, into the Northern Isles. Temperatures in Single Digits across the north. Another chilly night to come here, but milder in the south and west, where it will be a bit more humid, misty and murky. Wednesday, then, not a bad looking day. Quite a bit of sunshine around. Still windy in the north east of scotland and the Northern Isles, but thicker cloud will push into Western Areas at times and there will be some mist and murk around too. But i think most places will stay dry. Increasing sunshine across the east and south east of england. So, here, 2a, maybe 25 degrees and itll feel increasingly humid as well. Towards the end of the week, we start to tap into that warmer air over the near continent, so it will turn drier and sunnier. But it will turn a little bit humid as well. But you can see the red and orange colours spreading their way northwards across the uk. We could be up to the mid 20s in Scotland On Thursday and the high 20s for parts of england and wales. But it will be a short lived warm spell. Low pressure out in the atlantic will send a Weather Front across the uk during friday, which will bring showers or longer spells of rain, particularly to the north and the west of the uk. Some of them may be heavy. And as it moves through, temperatures will drop back down below the seasonal norm once again. So an unsettled theme as we head into friday and the weekend across the north and the west of the uk. Not looking that bad, though, across southern and eastern parts of england.
