hello i'm nancy kacungira. the former pakistani prime minister imran khan has called on his supporters to protest peacefully, (box)after he was found guilty on corruption charges and sentenced to three years in prison. a court in islamabad ruled that he had failed to declare income from the sale of gifts he received while in office. the verdict means he isn't allowed to hold public office for the next five years — pakistan is just months away from a general election. from islamabad, caroline davies reports. sirens blaring, police truck after police truck, arresting former prime minister imran khan. pakistan's former prime minister imran khan calls for peaceful the judgment came from here. police filled every corner in islamabad's session court. mr khan says that the case is politically motivated. the court said he is dishonest. so this is after months and months of waiting, we now finally have an announcement. imran khan has been found guilty and has been sentenced to three years* imprisonment. outside court, shouts of, "your show is over, khan." minutes later, we heard he'd been arrested. this was what happened last time mr khan was arrested. protests, some violent. mr khan was released but his party faced a dramatic crackdown. many of his senior party leadership were arrested, then announced that they'd left the party. police picked up thousands of his supporters. will the protests happen again? imran khan's team released this pre—recorded video after he'd been arrested today. translation: iwant to make one request. you should not sit quietly at home. all my struggle is not just for myself. it is for you, for the future of your kids. if you do not stand up for your rights, you will live like a slave. hello, good evening. pakistan's former prime minister imran khan has called a outside his house, there were a small number chanting, waving flags. then quickly taken away. it's been a matter of months but the atmosphere in pakistan has changed. this decision will mean mr khan cannot run in the upcoming elections. it's pretty useful for your party, though, that your main political opponent has just been disqualified in the run—up for a general election. well, you have to be accountable for your deeds in law. this is nothing to do with politics. a person who's been proven guilty by the court has to be arrested. his lawyers intend to appeal the decision but for now, mr khan is held by police and his politicalfuture is deeply uncertain. earlier i spoke to zulfikar bukhari, who served as a special assistant to the former prime minister imran khan between 2018 and 2021. he called today a "dark day for democracy in pakistan". however, it was writing on the wall because imran khan, for the last few weeks, has been predicting his arrest, and his disqualification. imran khan has grown in the last 12 months to be probably the most popular leader the country has ever seen, hence it was impossible to go into any kind of polls and election whilst he was in politics, hence he needed to be disqualified, which he had already guessed. that is something we have seen throughout the course of history in pakistan. it is a case which will be appealed in the high court and the supreme court, and we hope to get relief. we have heard imran khan's message, a pre—recorded one this report is. have you spoken to him? what sense do you have of how his feelings are at the moment, or his strategising? nobody has been allowed to speak to him since he's been arrested and was taken from lahore to a city. he has reached prison there. nobody has had access to him unfortunately. we hope that he is keeping well and is not given any torture while he is in prison, that is our biggest fear. you know, that is all that we have of any news of him at the moment. like we said, it was his legal team, they weren't allowed to give him any arguments, they weren't allowed to speak in court today. and so, it is obvious which intention the judge had come with, appointed under this case are the last minute to give his verdict. today was his last day before he goes on holiday. somehow, he did a 35 page verdictjudgment on imran khan's case, and thejudgment was printed within 20 minutes, and within ten minutes of that, they had stormed into imran khan's home. that means it was all preplanned from the beginning. it is impossible to get that kind of speed from the courts. the government denies this, they say that there was no political net motivation. we heard that from the minister. their argument is that he has committed a crime, the court has found him guilty, now he must be arrested. what is your response? well, you know, it is a very logical response. we have 13,000 people in prison, men, women, children, we have people have been tortured. women who have had human rights abuses going on. there is a massive crackdown on imran khan's party. so, saying it is not politically motivated just doesn't make sense when there are 200 cases on imran imran khan purched the estate gifts given to him were stated in his 2020 and 2021 accounts under precious items. he has paid tax on them, capital gains on them, so there is absolutely nothing illegal. absolutely everyone minister has purchased these. somehow, none of the other ones who have had them legally purchased have come up in court. and imran khan has all of a sudden been on a fast track and has been expelled. once it goes to the high court, and in the supreme court, the highest court in pakistan, i am very certain that this case will be dismissed. that was the former special assistant to imran khan. prosecutors in the us have asked a judge to limit information that donald trump can publicly discuss about his election fraud case. it follows a social media post by the former president on friday, in which he said: "if you go after me, i am coming after you!". the prosecution said they were ready to release "a substantial amount" of material to the defence in mr trump's criminal case, but the special prosecutorjack smith argued a protection order was particularly important because the former president had previously issued public statements about witnesses, judges and attorneys. mr trump's legal team has asked thejudge to extend monday's deadline to respond until thursday. live now to washington and let's speak to our correspondent sean dilley. help us to understand what is going on here. it sounds like the prosecution this rather worried about what donald trump and will say online. , ., ., ., , ., online. yes, a few more details are what they called a technical order. they did that because they said they were concerned that when they released information to donald trump, information to donald trump, information is entitled to to defend himself, they are ready to do that. however, they said that if that was shared, it could interfere with the due process of the case, can potentially impact on witnesses. that is their concern. now, the defence said that they only had very little time to prepare for this, because, they said, on friday afternoon, that was a wholly inappropriate time to prepare for something. now, the prosecution was initially asking for an immediate order to prevent donald trump... what he could say about this case. the judge what he could say about this case. thejudge denied what he could say about this case. the judge denied that and set the deadline for monday. after the ping—pong and have been the defence of the prosecution, there has been yet another filing by jack smith, the lead prosecutor. he says, we disagree with what the defence says. he said that the judge should refuse their order to extend. he said that they had been talking about it with them since wednesday but they were not playing ball. there is ping—pong in an argument going back and forth. at this stage, things are fraught. it's at a time where things will go in this case? how complex and complicated it might hard. there are other court cases mr trump is involved in, the separate classified documents case in florida, for example, that is another case that jack smith, the federal specialist prosecutor, he is in the department ofjustice, is involved in. now, in this case, again, we were expecting this. there is some toning and firming as to how much time the defence needs to prepare their legal defence. everyone is entitled to a proper defence. the prosecution say, we are ready to go as soon as possible. the defence, we cannot tell you any we are ready, until we have seen any of the evidence. the big argument: that will be on the 28th of august when, based on the information that is given to donald trump at the prosecution, the two parties will argue when he can stand trial. will that be before ukraine: president, volodymyr zelensky, says there has been a russian attack on a blood transfusion centre in kupiansk, in the north—east of the country. three people have reportedly died in the attack. and also in president volodymyr zelensky address, he said that russian missiles have hit the motor sich aircraft engine manufacturer in the southeastern city of zaporizhzhya. president zelensky made the annoucement in his regular evening address. earlier, the head of the zaporizhzhya military administration said that missiles had struck around zaporizhzhya and said there were no reports of casualties, and that the extent of damage was still being established. live now to james waterhuse in kyiv. president zelensky gives updates like this every evening. and, he claims tonight that a blood transfusion centre has been hit by a russian guided missile. there are unconfirmed reports that it was close to a village that was near to the front line. and there is a reality here, whether you're talking about cities like separation of villages in the region. even when russian forces retreated from their late last year, if you live close to the russian border, or if you are close to the front line, you are typically in range of missiles and artillery fire, and it is a daily occurrence book strikes like these take place. now, if there is accuracy to president zelensky*s claim, itappears accuracy to president zelensky*s claim, it appears that once again a medical building has come in harm's way. we have seen it before with a maternity hospital in the besieged city of mariupol last year. we saw it with a mental health hospital in dnipro. that wasjust it with a mental health hospital in dnipro. that was just a few months ago. this is a war synonymous with civilian areas and cities being directly targeted. president zelensky*s tweet says that this war crime says everything about russian aggression. he says: defeating terrorists as a matter of honour for everybody who values life. now, this is typical rhetoric you get from president zelensky as he tries to boost his country's morale under the sustain counter attack. we are told that there are dead and wounded. but we don't know anything outside of zelensky *s tweet. we don't know anything outside of zelensky 's tweet.— zelensky 's tweet. thank you very much. zelensky 's tweet. thank you very much- ukraine. 15—year old maksym and 16—year old ilona have recently lost their father and instead of staying in their home village decided to flee. details of their rescue operation are still kept secret, but the children shared their story when they were settling in in kyiv. oksana kundirenko reports. this brother and sister can hardly believe it is ok to just stop and play. translation: there was no ping pong during occupation. - children don't even play football in the stadiums. ilona and maksym pavlenka orphans who spent over a year in hiding under russian occupation. their mum died years ago and ailing father had kept them in the house since the russians came to their village in southern ukraine. translation: i wasn't studying. i haven't finished school. i don't have any documents, so i'm considered a dummy. i guess i couldn't go anywhere because my dad was worried. he said the russians could rape me or kill me. there have been such cases. when the father eventually died, ilona and maksym were worried that they would be forced to move to russia, given russian passports, and sent to orphanage or adopted. so they decided to flee. a daring escape was organised by volunteers who helped the children first to go to russia itself, then to belarus and eventually to ukraine. translation: we were crossing the border when i saw _ a sign reading ukraine. i started to cry. since the war began, i wanted ukrainian soldiers to come and save us. since the invasion of ukraine, moscow claims it has gathered hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children in occupied territories, taken with their stepmother. they are finally free and safe, relatively. france says it will support efforts by the west african regional bloc, ecowas, to reinstate the ousted president of niger. an ultimatum given to the coup leaders to hand back power orface military action expires on sunday. our reporter in lagos in nigeria — nkechi ogbonna — said all options could be on the table when that deadline expires on sunday. the ecowas chiefs made an announcement after a three—day meeting that they have been having in the capital. they say that they are exploring diplomatic options, including political and military options. however, they stress that the military option would be the last option, if the military organisation in niger remain defiant and do not restore constitutional order to the president mohamed bazoum. but, we do know that all the defence chiefs have agreed, and indeed, it seems clear that the niger coup has shown the volatility of the region, and they need to strengthen the military ties and communication efforts within the entire west african bloc. so, we don't know what those plans would be, but there may be a recommendation ecowas heads of state who would make the call on about military action in niger. police in new york say they plan to charge the us live—streamer kai cenat with multiple counts of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly, after a "giveaway" event he organised in manhattan got out of control. thousands of people rampaged through union square and new york park, with some throwing bottles, stones and tins of paint at police officers. they also set off fireworks and took spades and axes from a nearby building site. police said more than 60 people were arrested and they had to deal with a whole range of injuries. i personally observed young people walking out with their heads, bleeding from their heads, bleeding from on their faces. i've seen young, i personally observed young people having panic attacks, depression has been approved in the us. the food and drug administration said zuranolone, sold under the brand name zurzuvae, has been approved as a once—daily pill taken for two weeks. until now, treatment for postpartum depression was available only as an intravenous injection. it is estimated that one in seven women experience symptoms of ppd in the us, according to research. pam belluck is a health reporter for the new york times and has reported on the drug. this is the first pill specifically designated for postpartum depression, and the advances that it appears to work very quickly, it takes effect starting in about three days, and that is much faster than typical antidepressants, which do work for postpartum depression, but they often take several weeks to work. so, that is one big advantage of it. also, the fact that it only needs to be taken for two weeks, and then it can be stopped, doctors think it will be appealing to women as well. so, they can think of it as just a short term treatment. so it works faster, and you don't need to take it for as long. you have spoken to a woman who was involved in the clinical trial, for this drug. tell us about her experience. yes, amy bingham, she is actually from the uk, from the north of england. she lives in north carolina now. she described to me how five years ago when she gave birth to her son, after that, she started to feel tremendous anxiety. she was worried that she wasn't taking care of him well, she was afraid that she was a bad mother. and, those are classic symptoms of postpartum depression. so, she learned about this clinical trial. she volunteered. at the time, she didn't know whether she was in the placebo group or if she was receiving the drug. it turned out later, she was receiving the drug. and, she said, it didn't take effect immediately, but after a few weeks she just started to feel calmer. she just was able to deal better with the stress and, crucially, she was able to enjoy being with her son, and she felt much more engaged with him. india's third lunar mission has entered the moon's orbit. the spacecraft chandrayaan—3 is india's second attempt at a moon landing. it's due to touch down in two weeks. these are pictures from last month, when the mission was launched. if successful, india will become the fourth country to land safely on the lunar surface. it'll also be the first spacecraft to come down near the little—explored south pole. the last mission in twenty—nineteen crashed during touchdown. pope francis has taken part in a vigil in portugal's capital lisbon, where organisers say more than1 million faithful were in attendance. the riverside park called parque tejo was built for the occasion on a former landfill. some worshippers arrived more than eight hours before the pope appeared. the vigil is part of world youth day festivities, which is a week of religious, cultural and festive events held every three years in a different city. francis arrived in lisbon on wednesday, and will complete his trip on sunday. those are the pictures from that eventin those are the pictures from that event in lisbon, more than1 million people in attendance. definitely a big weekend for the pope. do stay with us here on bbc news. we will have the headlines for you in just a moment. don't go away. hello. dare i say it? saturday felt like quite an autumnal day in many parts of the uk. it was cool, it was windy. you can see big waves crashing onto the south coast of england. there were some really heavy bursts of rain. that was the scene for a weather watcher in staffordshire. it's all thanks to storm anthoni, this swirl of cloud, it's all thanks to storm antoni, this swirl of cloud, this storm system named by the met office. but the area of low pressure responsible will be sliding eastwards as we head through tonight and into tomorrow. so tomorrow should be a somewhat drier and brighter day. still some areas of cloud and some splashes of rain across eastern parts of england as we head through the night. further west will see clear skies, some showers feeding in across some western parts and temperatures actually dropping away. it's going to be quite a cool and fresh night, seven, eight or nine degrees, and that's in some of the towns and cities out in the countryside. it may getjust a little bit chillier than that, but after that, quite cool fresh start, a sunday will see this area of high pressure trying to build. it's not going to be a completely dry day, but on balance, it should be a drier and a brighter day than saturday has been. so some clouds, some rain, a bit of a breeze across eastern england for a time. further west, sunny spells and showers. some of the showers heavy, possibly thundery, particularly across parts of scotland. a slightly warmer day for many 17,18 or 19 degrees. that is still a bit below par in most locations. now, as we look ahead to monday, i think we'll see more in the way of dry weather, spells of sunshine, not as many showers at this stage. later in the day, a bit more cloud roll in across the south west of england, parts of wales and northern ireland, ahead of some splashes of rain. temperatures, again, just a little bit higher, 16 to 21 degrees. but as we head deeper into the coming week, initially we'll have some frontal systems bringing a little bit of rain here and there. but high pressure looks set to build later in the week, this high pressure building to the south east of us. and that will allow us to tap into some warmer air. we'll be drawing that up from the south. and so temperatures around the middle part of the week, wednesday and particularly into thursday will begin to climb. some places are likely to get into the middle. 20 celsius, could be looking at highs of 26 degrees or maybe a little higher than that. but it might not last because rain is set to return by the very end of the week. this is bbc news, the headlines pakistan's former prime minister imran khan has been sentenced to three years in prison. this comes after he was found guilty of not declaring money earned from selling gifts he received in office. he denies the charges and says he will appeal. in israel, thousands of people have ta ken to the streets to protest against the israeli government's controversialjudicial reform plans. petitions against the reforms have been filed to the high court, with an unprecedented 15judge panel to hear them next month. prosecutors in the us have asked a judge to limit information that donald trump can publicly discuss about his election fraud case. it comes after a social media post by the former president on friday. the first ever pill for post natal depression has been approved in the us. clinical trials showed the pill helped to significantly reduce depressive symptoms within three days.
