revenue stream is to the company as a whole. even as it is seeing these inconsistencies and spells of up and down in the shipments of its hardware like iphone, ipad and mac product lines, what we see is a really consistent revenue stream that just really consistent revenue stream thatjust becomes more and more important. as the people using apple hardware continues to grow it will only become about china and india. let's start with india, the big boss was there recently earlier this year and they are open to the stars there, huge market, 1.4 billion people, how did india perform? yes. a- le were people, how did india perform? yes. apple were really — people, how did india perform? yes apple were really excited about how they are performing in india. it is clearly a market they are actively targeting and they said as much on their earnings call that this is a huge market and one where there is a massive amount of headroom for apple to grow into. of course it has just opened its first retail stores there and given that i think it would be very natural to see the firm putting a heavy focus on that moving is forwards. . . . a heavy focus on that moving is forwards. ., ., , . a absolutely. it was i interesting that for lots of other companies who have been reporting earnings recently, china has been a sticking point for many other companies. they have really struggled with the slow recovery in china. but apple reported a really strong performance there. it said its revenue had increased their year over year and it particularly pointed towards its wearables products is one of the reasons for that. saying that the apple watcher is one of the products that is doing particularly well in china. yes. is one of the products that is doing particularly well in china.— after about five years, it was doing fine but the battery power just kept on decreasing. so i went to buy one, i nearly cried at the price but i had to suck it up and buy it. what is happening with interesting to see the ways in which iphone is becoming more and more powerful, actually. what we are seeing is an increasing diversity in the ways that people actually can and do buy iphones. one thing that we as a company have spent a lot of time researching has been second hand and how actually among second—hand smartphone sales that is aware that lots of people are getting into iphone. because it is an affordable way to get a device. apple also spoke on the earnings call about the importance for them are financing options for iphone. that means it does allow people to get into owning an iphone without having to face that huge upfront cost. because as you are right to identify, these are very premium products. we typically see the latest iphone is retailfor around $1000. they are very premium and a lot of people can't afford to pay that up front. things like financing are extremely important. i did save are extremely important. i did save a coule are extremely input. staying in the us, and some positive results from the delivery giant behind the mantra "faster and cheaper". the two words driving amazon this year — that seems to be paying off! amazon hit record delivery speeds in the spring — and late on thursday reported a big jump in earnings for the three months tojune — much better than wall street had been expecting. michelle fleury reports. amazon's results show it was firing on all cylinders. it turned in a strong online retail performance and registered higher sales at its cloud computing business. revenue for the second quarter rose 11%. investors liked what they heard. shares in the seattle—based company already up 50% before these earnings this year, rose on the news. now, ahead of the quarterly earnings, there were some concerns about people shopping less because of inflation. but ceo andy jassy is focused on increasing delivery speeds and keeping a lid on the company's costs seem to pay dividends. it's tv showjury duty made history by becoming the first ad—based video on demand show to get nominated, while sales at its all important aws unit, which houses its cloud business, rose 12% following strong performances by the likes of rivals meta and microsoft in this category. this really was a case of the tide lifting all boats, but it also shows that amazon's cloud business is still the king of the jungle, the dominant player, both for the whole industry and also internally. it accounts for 70% of amazon's operating profit this quarter. as for wall street's current obsession with all things ai, well, amazon said it was continuing to develop new technologies to help customers take advantage of generative ai. take a step back, and these numbers show that amazon, along with the other big names in tech, are starting to bounce back after a tough 2022. to the world of advertising now, and another set of results fundamentally linked to the tech world. the world's biggest ad firm — wpp — have downgraded their outlook for the year — flagging lower spending from the us. moving from predictions of 5% growth — halving them to more like 1.5 to 3%. alice enders from enders consulting explained what's behind the numbers. i think what we're seeing is, you know, the outcome of their own results. we just heard about apple having its revenue decline. and of course, in that context, you know, the watchword on wall street and just about everywhere is efficiency. so, of course, if you're cutting headcount, you're also going to be cutting marketing budgets. and of course, the general context of the world economy and demand for these products, and in particular, of course, the advertising products is bound to be lower than anticipated at the beginning of the year by wpp. to china now where there are signs that their trade war with australia is cooling as beijing has agreed to drop 80% tariffs on australian barley. now these tariffs were introduced back in may 2020 — in a move widely thought to be a response to australia calling for an international inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. relations between the two have improved since australian prime minister, anthony albanese, took office last may. our china correspondent, stephen mcdonnel, has the details. china dropping its tariffs on australian barley may not sound like a lot in many countries, but what it represents is a major step forward for trade relations between china and australia, who've been locked in a major trade war for several years. now this all started when the australian government called for an inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus. and this upset beijing because canberra had gone out on a limb before other countries had called for such an inquiry, and in apparent retaliation it placed tariffs on quite a few australian goods. not only barley, there was wine, lobsters, timber, coal. now one by one, these restrictions are coming off, and as they do, as i say, relations are improving and this all has largely been prompted by the new government coming in in australia. but with barley, as with wine, there's been a wto complaint by australia. now, the australian government welcomed the removal of tariffs on barley, stopped its wto action. it says that if the same thing can happen with wine, that it will also stop its action against china at the world trade organization. to the travel and tourism business now — it accounts for almost 10% of the global economy — and some countries depend on it far more than that. one of those is greece — where thousands of people have been forced to abandon their holidays — because of devastating wildfires. all across southern europe popular tourist destinations have been struggling under extreme heat. so what will climate change mean for the tourism industry in the long term? well, i caught up with the president of the european travel commission and asked him about the impact of the ongoing wildfires. what i know is that this has an impact on everyone, every sector of the economy. climate change is something that is affecting the entire economic system of the world, and it's something that we have to tackle, notjust in the tourism industry, it's something that we have to tackle in all industries. and i think that tourism and the travel industry, we're doing everything in our hands to mitigate climate change in our activity. your research shows that there's been a fall in the number of people hoping to travel to the mediterranean between the months ofjune and november, to countries that have, well, certainly seen the worst of the wildfires. just, miguel, just explain that a bit more, because i'm wondering, is that here to stay? well, our latest report shows that there is a 10% less interest in travelling in the peak months of the summerfrom... in european domestic travel and especially to southern destinations. but there is an increase in interest in travelling in the shoulder seasons in spring and autumn of 5.3%. and i think that this has to do not just with climate change. it might be a cause, but it also has to do with prices. the value for money for many consumers in europe. and it has to do with a trend to experience new types of tourism. but i think that there are people now looking at sun and beach and something else, and these can be done notjust in the summer, in the peak summer months, but it can also be done injune, in may, in september, in october. and i think that this is actually a good thing. and you can find out more about how climate change is affecting the travel and tourism industry — on my show — that's "talking business with aaron heslehurst" this weekend right here on bbc news. follow me on twitter. that is it. goodbye. bbc news, and their viability is being questioned, after alberta announced they can no longer host the 2030 event. it follows victoria in australia also pulling out of staging the next games in 2026. well, let's get more on this with our correspondent alex capstick. alex — why have alberta made this decision and what will happen now? well, this is a huge blow to what is already a fragile future for the commonwealth games. as you say, it comesjust commonwealth games. as you say, it comes just weeks after victoria withdrew from hosting the 2026 event. just like the australians, officials from the canadian province have said that they can'tjustify the costs involved. there was another potential bench from canale for 202030 but that collapsed because of a lack of government support. the ads are better involve two key cities involved a feasibility study but after that they announced that it was just too expensive and they weren't going to go forward with a formal bid. so what does this leave the commonwealth games federation? it would seem to be in crisis without a host for the next two editions. although this insisted there is ongoing dialogue with potential hosts. there has been suggestions that india or perhaps malaysia might launch a bid. but what is clear is that finding one, committed and prepared to meet all of the financial demands of staging such a big multisport event has become increasingly difficult. let's move on to the women's world cup now, where germany are still reeling from their shock exit. they're the 3rd top 10 side to go out in the group stages — but it could be good news for teams like england, as katie
