Of a candidate for the president ial election next year, donald trump, facing serious criminal charges that he tried to overturn the result of the last election in 2020, which was won byjoe biden. Mr trump, who was president between 2016 and 2020, is charged with four counts of plotting to subvert the 2020 election result. The 45 page indictment, or charge sheet, accuses him of knowingly spreading Pervasive And Destabilising Lies about Election Fraud that threatened american democracy. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of between five and 20 years. Mr trump said the charges had awoken the world to the corruption, scandal and failure that has taken place in the us underjoe biden. The former president has now been impeached twice, arrested twice and charged in three criminal cases. In the other two, hes accused of mishandling secret documents, and of covering up a payment to a porn star. Heres our north america editor, sarah smith. Die hard trumpsupporters were anything but distraught as they learned of the latest charges against him. These people do believe hes being unfairly persecuted, but also that he can beat the rap. Hes going to be the case. I think its helping his popularity. Most people will believe hes a martyr, you know, just being persecuted, and i think he will get more votes. I pledge allegiance keeping a Vigil Outside of a washington prison that has some of the january 6th rioters, they think this largely democratic city will be hostile territory for a trump trial. Do you think that if a dcjury finds donald trump guilty, am i going to think that that was legitimate . Laughter no. I Donald John Trump do solemnly swear. President trump swore to defend the constitution of the united states. But now hes accused of spreading lies and deceit, in a desperate attempt to stay in power, despite knowing he had lost the 2020 election. The police are now running back. The violent Attack Onjanuary 6th was, say prosecutors, a result of his prolific lies, as he deliberately created nationwide mistrust and anger. The attack on our Nations Capital on January 6th 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of american democracy. As described in the indictment, it was fuelled by lies. Lies by the defendant, targeted at obstructing a Bedrock Function of the us government, a nations process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the president ial election. Mr trump claims he is being politically persecuted and that his treatment is reminiscent of nazi germany in the 1930s. Why did they wait two and a half years . You know why . Because hes leading in the polls because theyre afraid of him becoming president and dismantling the party dismantling the deep state the parade in iowa always features gary leffler he went to support trump in washington on the 6th of january, but didnt break into the capitol. The democrats, their new playbook is to whoever the republican nominee is, they are going to try to press criminal charges on him. I dont like it but, you know, thats the way they decide to do it. This state will be the first to pick a republican candidate, so voters here follow politics closely and were fully expecting mr trump to be charged with trying to overturn the election. Given all the legal troubles that there are right now, i dont think that hes a viable candidate. And every time he gets indicted, his poll numbers seem to go up and he gets more popular, more people want him to be president. Because he has people believing that this is all deep state against him, and he is there protecting them from the deep state that is going to take over this country. Donald trump insists he will continue his president ial campaign, even if he is convicted and jailed for trying to overturn the results of the last election. Donald trump is due in court here in washington tomorrow and that will be the third time we have seen him facing criminal charges. But this case is considerably more serious. After all, case is considerably more serious. Afterall, he case is considerably more serious. After all, he is accused of conspiring to undermine the very basis of american democracy. If convicted, that could land him in jail, but it is worth saying that no matter what happens, contrary to what his son donald junior is sharing online, these charges do not come with a potential death penalty. Sarah, thank you very much, sarah smith reporting. The stepfather of a ten month old boy has been found guilty of his murder at derby crown court. Police say that the baby, jacob crouch, suffered a living hell at his home in derbyshire, before he was killed by 39 year old craig crouch in 2020. The boys mother, gemma barton, was cleared of murder and manslaughter, but was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child. Their Sentencing Hearing is due to take place on friday. 0ur Midlands Correpondent phil mackie sent this report. And a warning, some viewers will find his report distressing. A smiling, giggling baby, but during jacob crouch s short life, he endured what was described as a Culture Of Cruelty at the hands of his mother, gemma barton, and stepfather craig crouch. Can you feel or hear any breathing . No. Hes gone. This is the 999 call made after they found jacobs lifeless body in his cot, five days after christmas in 2020. They met on a dating site when she was four months pregnant. They quickly moved in together. And jurors were told that their relationship meant everything to them. Crouch was even named as father onjacob s birth certificate. They pretended to be good parents. Barton said thatjacob was her bundle ofjoy. Crouch said that he doted on his stepson. But in reality, jacobs life was one of relentless misery. In Text Messages shared in court, they called him a devil. They talked about their cruel punishments. And whenever he cried, they would smack him and send him to bed. This footage from her phone shows crouch joking about whetherjacob had been killed. Is everything all right . Uhhuh. Its very quiet in there, have you killed him . No i wouldnt mind if you had barton and crouch were arrested on suspicion ofjacobs murder nearly a week after he died. Im arresting you on suspicion of murder ofjacob. Would you like to say anything . It may harm your defence. At the time of his death, jacob had 39 rib fractures, i9 visible bruises, and a perforated bowel, which led to a fatal infection. He was only ten months old. Jacob crouch was born into a Culture Of Cruelty, where both of the people who he should have been able to trust above any other allowed him to be subjected to assault after assault. Heartbreakingly, for much ofjacobs short life, he would have been in significant pain as a result of the serious and repeated assaults. Craig crouch has been found guilty ofjacobs murder. Gemma barton was cleared of murder, but convicted of causing or allowing her sons death. Neither have explained how, or why, jacob died. Phil mackie, bbc news, derby. In this case, it doesnt appear either crouch or barton were known to social services. Nonetheless, there has been safeguarding rapid review carried out as a result of his death. The local Safeguarding Board have said there is a new multi agency approach to looking after Young Children which has already had positive outcomes. But it raise questions about 2020, social distancing and lockdown and whether or not crouch or barton were able to maintain that happy family facade that kept them away from the scrutiny of the agencies that might otherwise have been involved. The pair will be back here for a Sentencing Hearing on friday, but they may not hear how much time they will have to spend in jail until a further hearing that will have to be set as a new date in the future. Thank you, phil mackie reporting. Now, if youve battled through Something Like this today, you may well be asking, what on earth has happened to the uk summer . July was one of the wettest on record, and the rain is going to continue this month. Today, there have been yellow Weather Warnings in some areas for storms, heavy rain and winds, and theres been flooding, disruption to travel and to holiday plans. Sarah campbell reports now from west sussex. Not so much sun, sea and sand today in worthing, but getting soaked on the shingle. Yeah, so, the weather, yeah. Well, its dreadful, isnt it . Yeah, yeah. And, of course, the thing is, those poor people who went abroad for the heat, they got more than they bargained for, and the people that stayed at home got less than they bargained for. It is tough, especially with children to amuse during the school holidays. Expensive, very, very expensive and very hard. What have you been doing . Well, weve just really caught the bus in and wanted the bus in and wandered round the shops today meanwhile, on the local campsite, time to zip up the tents. Ive fixed it now, but this whole corner here had come off and was flying into my tent. Luckily, im not sleeping on this half, so i didnt notice that until the morning. It is really hard to keep up with the weather this summer. Today, the wind is so strong, its almost hard to walk in a straight line, and yet, yesterday here, it was lovely and sunny. And remember this . Injune, a prolonged heat wave. Last summer, dangerously high temperatures. Contrast with south devon today and the usually idyllic hope cove. Playing through the rain, these determined campers near scarborough, and taking the plunge in sunderland, despite the chilly temperatures. Back in worthing, and beachfront businesses have been finding it tough. You can see the rain is coming into the kiosk and, yeah, itjust, it goes really, really quiet and we dont get a lot of business. So were going to have to close early today. Oh, my gosh, youve actually caught that . Yeah, ijust caught it, yeah, yeah, yeah. So, this weather not too bad for fishermen . Best fishing weather. So, good forfishing and spectacular for kite surfing, but most would still probably prefer calmer waters to return. Those surfers might like the wind, but perhaps not so the rest of us and there are Weather Warnings elsewhere for thunder and lightning. I spent the day here wandering around worthing speaking to locals and tourists and Business People and Business People and they are asking if this Weather Pattern will become the norm. And if they are, they have to adapt their lives and their livelihoods to cope. Sarah, many thanks. The wet conditions are causing a big problem forfarmers, who are concerned about their crops and about the harvests to come as our environment correspondent jonah fisher has been finding out. All right, guys, just watch your footing. Its a little bit slippery down here now. Rain was forecast all day, and by 10am, much of the ground had turned from green to brown. But people kept coming to the north devon agricultural show. Did you look at the forecast today and think, maybe i wont bother . No, id paid in advance for my tickets and i thought, well, rain or shine, well have some fun. It was wet today, just as it has been for most of the last month. And thats bad news for farmers. Robin milton has been growing oats in this field to feed his animals. About a fortnight ago, this was beautifully stood upright, a nice level, even crop. Now the oats are on the ground, having buckled in the wind and rain. Its a scene being repeated across the country food starting to spoil and rot in soggy, windswept fields. What would you say to people who say, farmers are always complaining . One month, they complain its too dry, the next month, they complain its too wet. I would say theyre right. The reality is that what were seeing, or it feels like were seeing, is a climate now that is showing extremes, ratherthan a more seasonal pattern that we became used to, and thats concerning. After all the rain injuly, august has started in a very similar way, and thats left farmers looking rather nervously up at the skies, hoping for a break of several days in the weather, when the ground and the crops can dry and a harvest take place. The forecast doesnt look great at the moment, and i see it come out today, the crops around us are deteriorating very fast. It could be quite a write off, really. The car parks at the show closed at lunchtime for health and safety reasons. With no harvest to help with, the tractors had a new role. Its summer. Jonah fisher, bbc news, in north devon. Ben rich, from the bbc s weather centre, has more detail on this. Drought last year, rain this year should we expect more of these fluctuations in future summers . Yes, at the climate warms, we expect more extremes of both hot and wet weather and that is exactly what we saw in july, weather and that is exactly what we saw injuly, which globally was the worlds hottest month on record but in the uk it was a decidedly cool and wet months and impact Northern Irelands Wettestjuly On Record and look at these figures. Preston in lancashire saw 304 , more than three times the rain for it would expect in a typicaljuly but why did that happen . The weather got locked in a pattern, stuck in a rut, if you like, with the jet stream, the winds high in the atmosphere to the south bringing Weather Systems our way a bit like a conveyor belt, one after another after another. If you are waiting for a break in the weather, something more dry, lets look ahead to next week and this will not be a heatwave, we are not looking at long, dry, sunny hot days but with a bit more High Pressure on the chart, a bit less low pressure, it might be that we see something jUst A Little Bit drier for a that we see something jUst A Little Bit drierfor a while. That we see something Ust A Little Bit drier for a while. Bit drier for a while. Good news, thank yom the time is 18 16. Our top story this evening Donald Trumps Campaign Team says the latest criminal charges against him amount to election interference. Hes due in court tomorrow. And pop singer lizzo, famous for her messages of body positivity, is sued by three former dancers for alleged harrassment and fat shaming. Coming up on bbc news. Scotland gets ready to host the biggest multi discipline cycling event in history at the first combined world championships. Increasing numbers of orcas, or Killer Whales, are targeting fishing and Sailing Vessels off the coast of spain, damaging their rudders. Just why is unclear its thought it might be that the orcas view it as a game. Now scientists are tagging and tracking some of the whales, and the Satellite Information is being used to create online maps to help keep sailors safe. 0ur science Correspondent Victoria Gill Reports from southern spain. Are these animals attacking, or playing . For more than an hour, five orcas nudged, rammed and spun this yacht around. It is one of at least 100 incidents this year and scientists are trying to work out what is driving the strange, dangerous behaviour. Playing with the rudders, they break the fibre and the rudder split on the back, was completely split. So did that end up in the water . Yes, and this floated so, because it is floating, the orcas were playing with it, like, from the bottom, and playing on their nose. Were they . Yes. In this boatyard in barbate in southern spain, they have repaired at least a0 Sailing Vessels damaged by orcas since april. Here in the Narrow Strait of gibraltar, a population of fewer than 60 critically endangered iberian orcas move through one of the busiest waterways in the world. In the nearby fishing port, some crews say their boats have also been a target. Translation we have seen them and they are punching us, a few days ago, Sailing An Hourfrom here. They have always been there but they have never come near us but in the last few years it has changed. Scientists are examining footage of these encounters that has been taken by sailors since 2020, when Sailing Vessels started reporting that orcas were attacking them. It is thought the first encounters began four years earlier, with just two young, curious Killer Whales. Now Scientists Say up to 20 individual animals have learned this behaviour. By Pinning Tracking tags to the animals fins a technique used for many years to study them researchers here are gathering information that could help sailors. Thanks to the satellite tagging, we are able to know where exactly, how to save the Sailing Boats and motorboats, how to leave the area and to not cross the main area of the Killer Whales. What are these Killer Whales trying to do . Its only a game. Its not a revenge, its not Climate Change or nothing like that, its just game and thats it. That game is focused on the boats rudder. After orcas broke the rudder of a french boat earlier this year, they appeared to play with the floating debris. These incidents have become divisive here. For tourists on a Whale Watching Boat like this, they will wait for hours just for a glimpse of these orcas, they are a spectacle. But sailors and the Fishing Industry here are desperate to understand how to avoid them. For Sailing Crews that are navigating these waters, if they see the orcas, what do scientists suggest they do . Full ahead, full ahead motors. And straight on, dont change the course. Wow even that is not clear. Other official advice for sailors contradicts it. These Marine Mammals and their unusual new habit is putting our ability and our willingness to share the ocean with its wildlife to the test. Victoria gill, bbc news, in southern spain. The Prime Minister has defended Government Plans to house Asylum Seekers on a giant barge off the dorset coast after the Fire Brigades Union described it as a potential death trap. The union wants a meeting with the Home Secretary over concerns about overcrowding and access to fire exits on the Bibby Stockholm. The arrival of the first occupants of the barge has been delayed until next week. 0ur Correspondent Danjohnson reports from portland. The flagship of Government Migration Policy is still an empty vessel, and today, the Prime Minister had to explain why nobody s aboard. Will Bibby Stockholm be in operation next week . Yeah, the Bibby Stockholm will be in operation as soon as its passed all the checks and regulations. This week . As soon as possible. It reached portland two weeks ago after a refit to double its capacity. When i was shown around, we were told it would be operational by the end ofjuly, but there were Fire Safety Concerns. The Home Office Said yesterday theyve been addressed, but listen to this. We believe the Bibby Stockholm to be a death trap for many different fire safety reasons. But also it presents significant problems when there is a fire or a potential fire on the bibby, how firefighters could respond to that. Then the Home Office Said surther health and safety checks were needed. Now weve got the Health And Safety Executive saying it doesnt recognise the home Office Explanation of the latest delay. This was supposed to be the lead vessel in a fleet of barges that were to be placed around the country, but at the moment, it sits here, alone and empty a bit of a floating grey elephant. Protests on portland have echoed wider opposition. I have old ladies in my age group and above crying saying, im really concerned. Rishi sunak can certainly say, actually, its just not viable. It isnt cheaper, its never going to be cheaper than the hotels they are using presently. Weve got loads of toiletries. Others will welcome the men but still oppose their accommodation. I think it goes to show how ill thought out it is, how disorganised and chaotic its been. Some of the Fire Safety Concerns are really, really serious. So next week, then, perhaps.
