asked questions about his position all the way to west dunbartonshire where he was keen to try and trump it with labour gains. he wanted to talk about their successes labour had yesterday, he wanted to talk about where labour had made inroads, he wanted to talk about a turning point for stock instead, he is now being hounded by questions about what he's going to do if he is fined by durham police. this relates back to a gathering that took place in the run—up to a by—election last year. he was filmed in an office of one of his mps, a constituency office of one of his mps drinking a beer. he has said repeatedly that he is confident no rules were broken. initially, durham police looked and assessed there have been no offence committed. yesterday, they announced that they were investigating following significant new evidence. i think this is awkward timing because it overshadows the election result. it also completely neutralises the line of attack that he has been employing an boris johnson for his own behaviour in at number 10. johnson for his own behaviour in at numberio. borisjohnson and johnson for his own behaviour in at number 10. borisjohnson and the chancellor and the prime minister's wife have all received fines for attending gatherings in downing street. the met is also considering further fines for other events in downing street too. there will be a review that boris johnson is downing street too. there will be a review that borisjohnson is a subject to buy a senior civil servant. and keir starmer has been going very strong on the attack over that. and he called for boris johnson to resign as soon as he was being investigated over those parties. if he is applying the same standards here himself, he should be resigning now and he should be addressing the question what he is going to do if he himself gets a fine. i think these are very serious questions to keir starmer. at the moment, he is not keen to address them. he has repeated the line he has done nothing wrong, he was working, he stopped for a drink. i think sooner or later he will have to address these questions up front, because they are following him around the longer he goes. figs because they are following him around the longer he goes. as you sa , all around the longer he goes. as you say. all coming — around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in _ around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in the _ around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in the wake - around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in the wake of - around the longer he goes. as you i say, all coming in the wake of those council election results. many thanks for now. the education secretary nadhim zahawi has said the government must not be complacent after the conservatives suffered substantial losses in local elections across england, scotland and wales. the party lost almost 500 council seats, with the liberal democrats and labour making gains. the full picture of elections across england, scotland and wales is now clear. and the losses for the conservatives have been significant, down almost 500 councillors, ii more councils now out of tory control. ministers say they are listening. very much around making sure we have the plan for recovery continues, that we continue to bear down on the household budget pressures. 22 billion in 12 months is what we're delivering now. we're not going to be complacent. we're going to continue to bear down on that, safer streets and of course the nhs backlog. these are the things that i think win us votes and that's what borisjohnson is very much focused on delivering. labour had hoped a national backdrop of rocketing living costs and fines at the top of government for breaking lockdown rules would send voters flocking their way. the party did do well, securing symbolic victories in london and gains elsewhere. but these were tentative steps forward, rather than emphatic strides. we know we've got to rebuild trust. we had a terrible near—death experience at the last general election, so we're not taking anyone for granted. but i think what we saw in the results on thursday is a firm foundation for going on to win the next general election. labour's successes were overshadowed by police announcing they were now investigating leader sir keir starmer for a possible lockdown breach of his own. it's definitely been a good morning for the lib dems, who tempted traditional tory voters away to add almost 200 councillors in england. conservative support also melted away in wales, with labour profiting. and in scotland, the snp increased its support again, forcing the tories into retreat. the snp is a party 15 years into government. so it's a big vote of confidence in our leadership of scotland, both nationally and at local level. i don't take it for granted, though. people want to see us deliver now. the reason we keep winning elections is because we work really hard, at elections, between elections, to deliver for scotland. votes are counted and the verdicts are in. it's only a snapshot, but for all parties, plenty to chew over. leila nathoo, bbc news. our wales correspondent, tomos morgan told us how people voted across wales and the unexpected losses for the conservative party. after the brexit vote in 2017, i think it's fair to say that a number of disgruntled labour voters and brexit voters moved over and started voting tory. we saw that in the general election in 2017, the local election and general election after that, as well. but since the pandemic, things are beginning to change. last year, we had the senedd elections here in wales and mark drakeford's labour government exceeded expectations, really, did much better. and i think we basically mirrored that, really, here in wales with the local elections. what we didn't expect, potentially, was such a big downfall for the tories here in wales. they've done worse, losing all of the gains they made in 2017, losing the majority and the only councils they controlled, monmouthshire in wales. and, actually, now in monmouthshire, for the first time, labour is now the biggest party. that's the first time for labour there. labour, they took back control of two of the councils they lost last time around. they were unable to take the third and they did actually lose one as well, due to a local issue in neath port talbot. some of the other stories of the day yesterday were plaid — they've done from one council to controlling four. however, their overall vote share is down and they've lost six seats. so i think the question for them will be, if they can't take seats and can't hold onto voters in traditional labour heartlands, how will they be able to push forward in the next senedd in the general election? the other story, the lib dems taking ten seats in mid wales and also the greens, for the first time in wales, gaining eight seats across wales — the first time they've had so many in local elections. that was tomos morgan with the picture in wales. that was tomos morgan with the picture in wales. and in west dunbartonshire we heard from our scotland correspondent, alexandra mackenzie. well, there were gains in scotland for the snp, as you heard there, but also for labour, for the liberal democrats and for the greens. a very different story for the scottish conservatives. and in west dunbartonshire we heard from our here, they lost more than 60 councillors across the country. the snp remains the largest party — there was no surprise there. they had their best ever local election after 15 years in government. now, labour has overtaken the scottish conservatives for second place. so big disappointment there for the scottish conservatives. their leader, douglas ross, he said he believed that public anger over partygate had a part to play in that. he also said today that he was determined to win back trust and votes. it was a good day for scottish labour here in west dunbartonshire. they took overall control, but they are still some way behind the snp. alexander mackenzie there in scotland. just had a slew of full results come in. let's start with belfast west. you might reminisce with gerry adams's seat. sinn fein don't take up adams's seat. sinn fein don't take up their westminster seats. this is a definition of a sinn fein stronghold. 62% of the vote on first preferences. up 2%. there is no change in terms of overall seats declared for sinn fein. let's see what else we have. we have belfast east as well. this is a bit more of the mix, certainly not a sinn fein stronghold force of this is a dup higher share seat since 2003. but it has been another one of those places where the alliance party, in many ways the big story of this election, have just about coming first. no changes in terms of seats. you might think that is a bit weird, why is it you can have all of these changes in terms of share? it is partly a result of the single transferable vote system in northern ireland. it is a system which was designed to try and ensure stability, not too much dramatic change but it means that the spike in vote share becomes difficult to get substantial changes in seats. it has happened and does happen, as we are seeing in this election. southdown, another sinn fein stronghold up 44%. sinn fein came first mayor in 2017 and came first there again. you can see the broad story of a general election. the dup down even in places which are not unionist areas. the alliance are not unionist areas. the alliance are going to come third. which one haven't we done? up a ban, let's see the results from there. a more contested area between unionism and nationalism. dup came first, sinn fein overtook them in terms of first preferences. and the tuv with the alliance gaining a seat overall. where does that leave us in terms of the overall picture? we got the first preferences yesterday. 0nly happened once before in terms of a nationalist party coming first before. sinn fein have never done it before. sinn fein have never done it before but they have this time. we have 77 out of 90 declared. sinn fein currently on 23. as soon as they passed 26, which we are expecting them to do, it means a dup will not be able to catch up. dup down two, but there you go. the alliance party are the big winners of this election, up from seven from a fifth place to third. it does pose an interesting change to northern irish politics, as we have been hearing all afternoon. as anybody who knows anything about northern ireland knows, the politics and history of northern ireland has been bifurcated, split down the middle between nationalists and unionists. we can still see the blocks are still very strong. unionists are still very strong. unionists are still in the plurality. what we never had before was a significant nonsectarian block but that is what we have for the first time. it introduces yet another unstable element into northern irish politics. something new at a time when there are many questions to be resolved about northern irish politics. what happens to the executive? will sinn fein be able to dominate with a first minister? the dup take part? what will happen to the northern ireland protocol? it is all up for grabs at the time of significant change ahead after an already significant turbulent years in northern ireland. thanks so much of that update, lewis. if you'd like to find the result in your area, head to the bbc news website or app and enter your postcode. you ll also find plenty of election analysis, and the latest reports from our teams around the country. sport and for a full round—up, from the bbc sport centre. celtic are within touching distance of the scottish premiership title — they're all but champions after beating hearts in the lunchtime kickoff. the visitors took an early lead, but celtic responded emphatically, winning 4—1. that takes them nine points clear of rangers who have three games to play and a far inferior goal difference to celtic. chelsea have confirmed an agreement is now in place for the club to be sold to an american consortium led by billionnaire todd boelhy, who's co—owner of the la dodgers baseball team. the deal*s worthjust over £4 billion. at stamford bridge this afternoon chelsea are playing wolves. romelu lukauku top of the premier league with a win over spurs. we now know the play—off picture in the championship, as luton guaranteed their place in the top six on the final day of the season. have a look at nearly 6,000 fans, eboni partington scored two of her sides tries as they won 18—8 to clinch their second challenge cup title in a row. we have not been behind yet this season. that was something we had to mentally deal with more than physically. as much as it was physically. as much as it was physically tough out there, it has more the mental side, being able to refocus. at half time, i think it was good for us to be able to settle down, recompose and come out again. i think it isn'tjust about believing in each other. we trusted in each other*s quality and came out and did the business in the second half. the men's semi—finals are also being held at elland road, and the first one between wigan and saint helens was an absolute cracker. liam marshall opened the scoring for wigan afterjust two minutes, and they added another couple of tries to lead 14—0 at at the interval. the warriors looked comfortable until konrad hurrell started and they added another couple of tries to lead 14—0 at at the interval. the warriors looked comfortable until konrad hurrell started an unlikely comeback early in second half. jonny lomax helped close the deficit and thenjames roby put saints in front for the first time in the game. but they couldn't hang on. watch this for an incredible second try from marshall. it took him less than ten seconds from collecting the ball to putting wigan level at 18—18. harry smith then kicked them into the final where they'll face huddersfield or hull kingston rovers who are in the second semifinal later today. britain's simon yates has won the second stage of the giro d'italia and moved up to second place in the overall standings. the first three stages of the giro take place in hungary this year. stage two was a time trial on the streets of budapest, and yates flew round the six—mile course in under 12 minutes. it took a gutsy performance from mathieu van der poel to keep yates out of the leader's pinkjersey. he was three seconds slower but retains the overall lead by 11 seconds. that's all the sport for now. i'll have more for you in the next hour. lovely, see you later. to other news, ukraine says it has recaptured five villages north—east of kharkiv, as it continues a counter—offensive against russian forces. the ukrainian military say they could soon make it impossible for russia to use their artillery on the city. moscow has succeeded in making small advances in the eastern donbas region, although those have been described as costly. with all the latest developments, joe inwood has this report. it was a simple transaltion: if i had the strength, i would be the first to defend. - i would stand and help our troops. you know, it hurts a lot. what did we fight for? what did we set free? but it seems ivan could be one of the last victims of russian shelling in kharkiv. explosion ukrainian forces say they've recaptured a number of villages on the outskirts of the country's second city. analysts believe the russians could soon be pushed out of artillery range. that would be welcome news to the defenders of barvinkove, a strategic town on the edge of the donbas. they're well dug in here but know the russians are coming. "they want to go to dnipro and zaporizhzhia", maxym says. "they want to capture our territory, to encircle us, surround us. but this will not happen. we will not allow it." in the port city of mariupol, the un and red cross say they will continue their attempts to free civilians from the besieged azovstal steelworks. yesterday, they escorted a further 50 civilians to safety. president zelensky says he hopes they will not be the last people to walk out alive. translation: we are also working on diplomatic options _ to rescue our soldiers who still remain at azovstal. powerful intermediaries are involved, powerful states. this war is also one of information. ukrainian activists in berlin released this video, parodying the images from the start of the war as they pull former soviet tanks from their pedestals. it came as russia made final preparations for its annual victory day parade. a show of might from a military that, in places, now appears to be on the back foot. joe inwood, bbc news, lviv. the taliban in afghanistan have ordered all women to veil their faces when in public, returning the country to the dress code enforced during their previous time in power. it recommended that women wear the all—encompassing burqa. the move has been met with dismay by women 5 rights campaigners, who say that nine months after seizing power, the taliban are again rolling back women 5 rights. 0ur correspondent secunder kermani has more from kabul. the last time they were in power, the taliban made women wear the all—encompassing burqa. it was one of the measures most closely associated with their regime. after taking power last august, however, they held off on issuing any new laws on what women should wear — until now, that is. today, they decreed that all women must cover their faces with a veil in public, and they laid out an escalating series of punishments for any woman not complying, beginning with their male relatives being talked to at home. then, if a woman still isn't complying, those male relatives being summoned by taliban officials, then potentially being jailed for three days and taken to court. now, this is a conservative country and many women already wore a face veil of sorts, but in kabul and other big cities, as you can see from this clothes market, many women cover their hair but not their faces. and women's rights activists, as you can imagine, have reacted to this decree with dismay. they see years of fragile progress on women's rights being rolled back. remember, teenage girls are still not allowed back into the classroom in most of the country. many female employees have been told not to return to their offices. across the world, the majority of muslims don't believe it's a compulsory part of the religion for women to wear a veil over their faces, but here in afghanistan the taliban seem adamant on imposing their interpretation of islam. despite having initially appeared more lenient, their hardline ministry of vice and virtue, which issued this decree today, has grown increasingly active in recent weeks. second, neither in kabul. climbing one of the uk's highest mountains is a daunting prospect at the best of times, but imagine doing it in a wheelchair. that's exactly what ian flatt from harrogate hasjust done. ian, who has motor neurone disease, scaled snowdon in wales to raise money for fellow mnd sufferers. 0livia richwald was there. ian flatt won't let terminal illness limit his ambitions or diminish his enthusiasm. i'm very excited. i couldn't sleep last night. everybody said to me, "let's be sensible. let's go to bed early." i couldn't sleep a wink. ian has motor neurone disease. it's slowly robbing him of muscle control and mobility. he uses an electric wheelchair and is determined today to take it into the clouds on the snowdon summit. they're not doing anything, they're just along for the ride. ian is joined by some of his doctors and nurses, friends and family, including his 77—year—old mum. it's a very cruel disease. but what keeps my husband and i going and gives us some peace is the fact that ian is so positive and he's living every moment to the fullest. i'm immensely proud of him. with motor neurone disease, because your muscles don't work so well, every single action takes so much more energy than it would do for you or me. so this is the equivalent of doing an ultra marathon for ian, it's really quite amazing. ian's friends have engineered ramps to help his wheelchair over the worst of the boulders. theirjob is to make sure he doesn't tip out and push and pull over the steepest sections. straight now. straight. brilliant. we made mincemeat out of those steps and rocks. halfway up, we enter the cloud. visibility drops, the views disappear and it becomes cold and wet. ian uses his ventilator to manage his breathing. good to go. but you get such an emotional lift and such an adrenaline rush. i love it today. why wouldn't you ? i'm surrounded by the best people in the world, and i'm in one of my favourite places. more than four hours after ian started, he reaches the top of snowdon. a remarkable achievement for an inspirational man. 0livia richwald, bbc news, snowdon. now it's time for a look at the weather with ben rich. saturday sunshine amounts have certainly — saturday sunshine amounts have certainly varied as the picture behind — certainly varied as the picture behind me is from the north coast of northern_ behind me is from the north coast of northern ireland.— northern ireland. there were some sunshine here. _ northern ireland. there were some sunshine here. then _ northern ireland. there were some sunshine here. then look— northern ireland. there were some sunshine here. then look at - northern ireland. there were some sunshine here. then look at this i sunshine here. then look at this beautiful shot from one of our weather watchers in the western isles of scotland. gorgeous blue skies overhead. contrast that with the rather grey conditions of this weather watcher walking along the coast in kent. this grey shade here shows that we had some cloud today which produced shall remain in places with more cloud waiting in the winds out in the atlantic. initially a very weak frontal system introducing a bit more cloud in the northern ireland, western scotland, bit of rain here by the end of the night. some areas of low cloud, mist and murk elsewhere. rather chilly for eastern scotland and eastern england. my further west. 12 degrees for cardiff. tomorrow, high pressure trying to hold firm, but these frontal systems will be grazing in from the atlantic, introducing more cloud for a time in northern ireland, especially the north west of scotland. there will be some rain here pushing towards shacks owned by the afternoon. elsewhere, early mist and murk tending to clear, lingering some western coasts. we will see spells of sunshine and patchy cloud as well. a small chance of a shower, especially in north wales, northern england and southern scotland. call the north sea coast, that elsewhere 18-20 the north sea coast, that elsewhere 18—20 degrees. the area of high pressure is set to retreat as we move into monday. in this next frontal system is going to be more active. this will bring some quite heavy and persistent rain across parts of northern ireland, western scotland, not as much rain into eastern scotland. much of england and wales are staying dry. we hold on to some sunshine through central and eastern parts, there will be a taste of warm. 20 degrees the hull, birmingham, norwich. butjust14 further north in glasgow and aberdeen. 0n further north in glasgow and aberdeen. on tuesday, this band of rain sinks south—eastward, weakening. not rain in the south—east corner. quite windy and it will be a bit cooler again, 13 up to maybe 20 on the far south—east. it looks like turning call in the middle part of the week. a lot of dry weather around some showers with longer spells of rain at times. this is bbc news. the headlines at five... sinn fein has hailed a new era in northern ireland as the party is on course to become the largest one at stormont. on monday, we must all turn up together. that's the reason why on monday there is an urgency to restore an executive, to start to put money back into people's pockets, to start to fix the health service. the people can't wait. democratic unionist party leader jeffrey donaldson says his party will wait til next week before deciding whether to enter a power—sharing government. the sovereign government here who can make the decisions, that will unlock the door to stormont is the uk government. that is absolutely clear.

he should be addressing the question what he is going to do if he himself gets a fine. i think these are very serious questions to keir starmer. at the moment, he is not keen to address them. he has repeated the line he has done nothing wrong, he was working, he stopped for a drink. i think sooner or later he will have to address these questions up front, because they are following him around the longer he goes. figs because they are following him around the longer he goes. as you sa , all around the longer he goes. as you say. all coming — around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in _ around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in the _ around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in the wake - around the longer he goes. as you say, all coming in the wake of - around the longer he goes. as you i say, all coming in the wake of those council election results. many thanks for now. the education secretary nadhim zahawi has said the government must not be complacent after the conservatives suffered substantial losses in local elections across england, scotland and wales. the party lost almost 500 council seats, with the liberal democrats and labour making gains. the full picture of elections across england, scotland and wales is now clear. and the losses for the conservatives have been significant, down almost 500 councillors, ii more councils now out of tory control. ministers say they are listening. very much around making sure we have the plan for recovery continues, that we continue to bear down on the household budget pressures. 0nly happened once before in terms of a nationalist party coming first before. sinn fein have never done it before. sinn fein have never done it before but they have this time. we have 77 out of 90 declared. sinn fein currently on 23. as soon as they passed 26, which we are expecting them to do, it means a dup will not be able to catch up. dup down two, but there you go. the alliance party are the big winners of this election, up from seven from a fifth place to third. it does pose an interesting change to northern irish politics, as we have been hearing all afternoon. as anybody who knows anything about northern ireland knows, the politics and history of northern ireland has been bifurcated, split down the middle between nationalists and unionists. we can still see the blocks are still very strong. unionists are still very strong. unionists are still in the plurality. what we never had before was a significant nonsectarian block but that is what we have for the first time. it introduces yet another unstable element into northern irish politics. something new at a time when there are many questions to be resolved about northern irish politics. what happens to the executive? will sinn fein be able to dominate with a first minister? the dup take part? what will happen to the northern ireland protocol? it is all up for grabs at the time of significant change ahead after an already significant turbulent years in northern ireland. thanks so much of that update, lewis. if you'd like to find the result in your area, head to the bbc news website or app and enter your postcode. you ll also find
