together by the billionaire brothers who co—own both of our business correspondent emma simpson reports. from its first shop in glasgow in 1901 to a network of more than a thousand stores. mccoll*s is a familiar name in our high streets. shopping locally has never been more popular than during the pandemic, but mccoll*s has found the going tough. here in stevenage, shoppers say it's handy but don't buy very much. ijust get my newspapers here and ijust like them because they're available, you know, they're always regular. we're just heading in now to get a birthday card and a drink, a quick grab and go. yes. good service. not always got what you want. even before covid, convenience stores have been a bright spot here on the high street. but mccoll*s has been too slow to adapt and providing more of a one—stop shop. it's also had long running supply chain problems struggling to get stock, a business with too much debt, finding it harder and harder to make money. morrison's, already in a partnership with mccoll*s, put in an offer for the chain overnight, but it's the owners of this vast petrol station group who now look set to buy the business. the underlying business at mccoll*s is over a thousand convenience stores in pretty decent locations. and really now in the future it's just a question of getting the range right and the pricing right to see the business flourish well into the future. mccoll*s staff were told today that going into administration would hopefully mean that the business and colleagues would transfer across to a new owner. a deal could be done by monday. emma simpson, bbc news, stevenage. buckingham palace has announced that prince andrew, prince harry and his wife meghan will not make appearances on the royal balcony during the ley for the latest on the news. can i show you this result from saint burns? this will tell us something about the story of the day as well. the lid tends, a very big lib dem stronghold, saint auburn is been held by the lib dems, that's no surprise because a live dams have had a very good local election. but let's look at the actual result. 50 seats to the lib dens in save auburn as well seeing second batch a dramatic improvement on their position, four seats to the tories and then independents and greens want let's look at the change since last time around. look at that. now, thatis last time around. look at that. now, that is what you call a turbo—charged boost by the lib dems, putting on 20 seats. look at that conservative performance was up down 18 seeds in a part of the country that yes, of course it's quite affluent, it's quite a remain kind of part of the world so you build that in as well in terms of the kind of demographic nature of it. but thatis of demographic nature of it. but that is still a startling results for the tories where they've been excuse me for using the word, a wallop they been in st albans. with that in mind, what i'd like to do is to talk to our regional political editor in bristol. we are still in the lead libjab editor in bristol. we are still in the lead lib jab theme the performance of the lib dems in your region and specifically in specifically in somerset in that new authority which we were talking about earlier today because they are again it was a very strong lib dem performance. talk us through that. it's surpassed all expectations, surpassed all productions. the conservatives had run the county of somerset county council level for 13 years. the last time it was up is 2017 and got a solid majority then. backin 2017 and got a solid majority then. back in 2019 the most recent election for the calories when districts went to the polls with the people remember there was a bad year for teresa mae and conservatives in the local elections. in a particular instance, the local democrats took three of the four district councils. they were going well then but we had a general election months later, the lib dems didn't do well at all. it's a county where where they once were so strong you think back to those times to where they held most of the parliamentary seats in somerset, did really well across the west country, that all hit the buffers back in 2005 at the end of the coalition, they were wiped off the map in terms of parliamentary seats in the west country. it didn't looking for a way back. this election they went into it a long way behind the conservatives in terms of the countywide vote last time they hope to make real progress, they thought they might end up is the biggest party but what they actually got was a big solid majority. the tories were really pumped across the county, it was a bad result for them. if you look at the other parties, labour, very small in somerset state where they were, there is half the green cows are, no real change there, a few independents again, no real change, it was a lib dems going forward the conservatives going backward very badly. conservatives going backward very badl . , ., , ., badly. the question is, how concerned _ badly. the question is, how concerned are _ badly. the question is, how| concerned are conservatives badly. the question is, how i concerned are conservatives in badly. the question is, how - concerned are conservatives in the west of england about the prospect and the general election faced with and the general election faced with a resurgent lib dem party? what are they saying to you?— they saying to you? interesting, i was talking to — they saying to you? interesting, i was talking to one conservative i they saying to you? interesting, i i was talking to one conservative mp yesterday is saying, on the one hand, five years ago yes, we did really well in local elections here but then three years ago we had a pretty dire at night. he was saying we can expect these ups and downs, putting it onto a bit of midterm blues but that was before the results came in. i don't think he was expecting, i don't think any of the conservatives in somerset were expecting it to be as bad as it really was. so they will be worried because it's this sense of resurgence against the conservatives. in the other parts conservatives. in the other parts conservatives have held their ground to quite a degree against labor. they really gone backwards where they're up against the lib dem. if you look at the road actually the m5 to cheltenham where half the seats were being contested there, the lib dems already ran that council. what we saw today was the conservatives slipping backwards even more. and that will be a real concern to the conservative mp there who sits on a very marginal majority. i would say for conservative mps, it's a real worry. some trying to say this is just a midterm ripple, if you like, people expressing their discontent. i know when i was out in somerset talking to people i met quite a b who said, yes, i would normally vote conservative but because of what's going on naturally i'm not going to this time. ., ., ~ going on naturally i'm not going to this time. . ., ~' , ., , this time. paul, thank you very much. indeed _ this time. paul, thank you very much. indeed looking - this time. paul, thank you very much. indeed looking across . this time. paul, thank you very i much. indeed looking across the this time. paul, thank you very - much. indeed looking across the west of england at the lib dem performance there and following on from what i was saying about st albans. i know you know the st albans. i know you know the st albans area pretty albans. i know you know the st alba ns area pretty well albans. i know you know the st albans area pretty well the west country in many ways offers some useful folly for us. how concerned should conservative mps be about the lib dem threat in this parts of the world? * , ., ., , ., world? berry. the landgrab or starts it is been doing _ world? berry. the landgrab or starts it is been doing in _ world? berry. the landgrab or starts it is been doing in the _ world? berry. the landgrab or starts it is been doing in the red _ world? berry. the landgrab or starts it is been doing in the red walls in i it is been doing in the red walls in wales and elsewhere is the concern is the seeds in the core grassroots part of the country where the tories have been so strong are being forgotten about. st albans is also a remain story, i think. daisy cooper there, great mp, lib dem been a strong team of campaigners was that i think they do really well. somerset is a worry. the mp for yeovil is now calling tonight for a change in economic strategy, he's not sure about personalities but he thinks the policy is wrong on taxation. that area is where the new headache for boris johnson taxation. that area is where the new headache for borisjohnson going next week is what are we doing here, we are losing sight of these areas. time and again overnight talking to conservatives who were feeling the pain and even earlier today i think we are talking earlier, same kind of message, there needs to be more help for people, taxation policy is wrong, national insurance policy misguided, if there is to be extra help it needs to beat now, not waiting for the budget, there is no kind of time to lose especially given the fact that people are signalling a bit of a crisis going on. first of all, you kick off with this one. is that likely? we had rishi sunak saying it would be silly to start off doing that offering more help to people we know it can happen in the autumn. he explained that very clearly in his thinking was very clear on that. is he can have to revisit that? the was very clear on that. is he can have to revisit that?— was very clear on that. is he can have to revisit that? the budget in november is _ have to revisit that? the budget in november is after _ have to revisit that? the budget in november is after the _ have to revisit that? the budget in november is after the huge - have to revisit that? the budget in i november is after the huge increase likely in the 1st of october. that figure is set in august. the hot money is on intervention, physical intervention by the government in september. looking into the party conferences and there's no way the tories will go through all the party conferences with the lib dems in labour and have no answer to the huge increase in energy prices in october. going back from that, looking at the reshuffle in september, looking at three difficult elections for by elections for different reasons, also some tory mps feel there's a need to renew files with their leader, that can't come soon enough. the pressure ed davey lost two stone, looking punchy, looking sharp, is an interesting thought for the tories was that they were disregarding a few months ago but not anymore. if few months ago but not anymore. if they did underestimate, they've done it out there because havoc they really? were you expecting to see the lib dems coming back with this kind of strength? i the lib dems coming back with this kind of strength?— the lib dems coming back with this kind of strength? i think throughout lib dem history _ kind of there of the tories and labour and the lib dems. there of the tories and labour and the lib dems-— the lib dems. clearly a very difficult set _ the lib dems. clearly a very difficult set of _ the lib dems. clearly a very difficult set of results - the lib dems. clearly a very difficult set of results for i the lib dems. clearly a very| difficult set of results for the conservatives. they took a bit of a beaten, particularly in places like tunbridge wells, once that was considered the tory heartland. they lost control of counsel, they lost control of counsel at ship it became the second party this year. so the lib dems became the biggest party. they also lost seats in cambridge and of course lost worthing counsel to labor. it's been really difficult for the conservatives the set of results. i think we look at places like tunbridge wells, i do think party gate clearly has played a part in peoples decision—making. when you go out and about speak to people in tunbridge wells, they do raise it, they don't talk about it, some of they don't talk about it, some of the activists i've talked to said it came up quite a lot on the doorstep. of came up quite a lot on the doorstep. of course tunbridge wells is the only area and canned that voted remained. they not necessarily massive fans of boris johnson. remained. they not necessarily massive fans of borisjohnson. i do think are possibly a little less forgiving of him in maybe some other part of the country. the conservatives really took a hit in places like tunbridge wells with it is worth bearing in mind the results we've seen in the southeast do seem to have followed a bit of a pattern. sandridge loss, conservatives lost overall control of the council in 2019 and they continue to lose seats this time around for the tunbridge wells, conservatives lost overall control of the council last year. we can put everything at the door of party gate and the current national political situation. of course, party gate and the current national politicalsituation. of course, many people have been voting on local issues was up the state of the roads, housing is a really big issue in the southeast. certainly a really difficult set of results for the conservatives they are. charlotte, aood to conservatives they are. charlotte, good to talk _ conservatives they are. charlotte, good to talk to — conservatives they are. charlotte, good to talk to you. _ conservatives they are. charlotte, good to talk to you. charlotte i conservatives they are. charlotte, good to talk to you. charlotte at i good to talk to you. charlotte at the bbc news room in tunbridge wells. looking at kent in the southeast. christopher hope and allison phillips, really grateful for you to react to you. nice of your company. on the let you go and hopefully you will have a nice evening. plenty for us to discuss in i'm looking forward to what you will be including in your publications on the results. thank you very much for being with us. why do we catch up with the weather. it's thomas tonight. hi thomas, how are you? good evening. the earlier rain across northern and western parts of the uk should largely fizzle out through the evening and overnight. and that means that the weekend should be generally dry, sunny spells, just a few showers in the forecast, i think, tomorrow. so, here's the latest satellite picture, as the weather front crosses the country and moves southwards, here it is very early in the morning, and then i think by the middle of the day, it should be out of the picture, as high pressure builds in. so, through the early hours, a few showers there in east anglia and the southeast. elsewhere across the country, it's a case of clearing skies and our temperatures around seven o'clock in the morning on saturday around 9 celsius in belfast, seven celsius in glasgow, 13 degrees in london with that cloud and a few showers. now, the forecast indicates a fair bit of cloud across east anglia and the southeast in the morning. it could hang around through the afternoon as well, could be some showers, showers also could develop from southern parts of wales across the pen pennines, just about into the midlands. i think the best of the sunshine will be out towards the west across wales, southwestern parts of england, the higher temperatures here up to around 19 degrees or so. all in all, i think saturday is going to be a mostly fine day. here's sunday, high pressure still in charge, butjust starting to drift out towards the north sea. and this low pressure makes inroads. so, on sunday, i think increasing amounts of cloud out towards the northwest. i think more than anything, its hazy skies. elsewhere, scattered fairweather clouds with light winds, temperatures inland up to around 18—19 degrees, on the north sea coast, a bit fresher there, closer to 14 degrees. now, here's monday. that weather front really does push in across northern ireland and into scotland, so some wet and breezy weather at times here. but across the midlands, east anglia and the southeast, it's going to be a fine monday with sunshine and quite warm too. given some sunshine, temperatures could get up to around 21 degrees. now, here's the outlook for next week. now, you will notice that the breeze is mostly coming off the atlantic, so it's not going to be all that warm. still temperatures probably in the high teens, just about 20 degrees across the south, but the thinking is that elsewhere across the country, it will be a good deal cooler with frequent showers and breezy weather. bye— bye. good evening, and welcome back to our special bbc election coverage. this has been our home nearly for 24 hours now, monitoring all the election results, and as they come in, most of them have come in, we have been looking in detail at some of the english council election results which have taught as a great deal about the various related positions of the parties in england at the moment. the wheels i , most of them in —— wales results, showing a different pattern, conservatives having a tough time there. in scotland, the snp all—powerful, but labour having moved into second place ahead of the conservatives, and in northern ireland, lots of the results still to come, but sinn fein have made history in northern ireland because they are the top

together by the billionaire brothers who co—own both of our business correspondent emma simpson reports. from its first shop in glasgow in 1901 to a network of more than a thousand stores. mccoll*s is a familiar name in our high streets. shopping locally has never been more popular than during the pandemic, but mccoll*s has found the going tough. here in stevenage, shoppers say it's handy but don't buy very much. ijust get my newspapers here and ijust like them because they're available, you know, they're always regular. we're just heading in now to get a birthday card and a drink, a quick grab and go. yes. good service. not always got what you want. even before covid, convenience stores have been a bright spot here on the high street. but mccoll*s has been too slow to adapt and providing more of a one—stop shop. it's also had long running supply chain problems struggling to get stock, a business with too much debt, finding it harder and harder to make money. morrison's, already in a partnership with mccoll*s, put in an offer for the chain overnight, but it's the owners of this vast petrol station group who now look set to buy the business. the underlying business at mccoll*s is over a thousand convenience stores in pretty decent locations. and really now in the future it's just a question of getting the range right and the pricing right to see the business flourish well into the future. mccoll*s staff were told today that going into administration would hopefully mean that the business and colleagues would transfer across to a new owner. a deal could be done by monday. emma simpson, bbc news, stevenage. buckingham palace has announced that prince andrew, prince harry and his wife meghan will not make appearances on the royal balcony during the ley for the latest on the news. can i show you this result from saint burns? this will tell us something about the story of the day as well. the lid tends, a very big lib dem stronghold, saint auburn is been held by the lib dems, that's no surprise because a live dams have had a very good local election. but let's look at the actual result. 50 seats to the lib dens in save auburn as well seeing second batch a dramatic improvement on their position, four seats to the tories and then independents and greens want let's look at the change since last time around. look at that. now, thatis last time around. look at that. now, that is what you call a turbo—charged boost by the lib dems, putting on 20 seats. look at that conservative performance was up down 18 seeds in a part of the country that yes, of course it's quite affluent, it's quite a remain kind of part of the world so you build that in as well in terms of the kind of demographic nature of it. but thatis of demographic nature of it. but that is still a startling results for the tories where they've been excuse me for using the word, a wallop they been in st albans. with that in mind, what i'd like to do is to talk to our regional political editor in bristol. we are still in the lead libjab editor in bristol. we are still in the lead lib jab theme the performance of the lib dems in your region and specifically in specifically in somerset in that new authority which we were talking about earlier today because they are again it was a very strong lib dem performance. talk us through that. it's surpassed all expectations, surpassed all productions. the conservatives had run the county of somerset county council level for 13 years. the last time it was up is 2017 and got a solid majority then. backin 2017 and got a solid majority then. back in 2019 the most recent election for the calories when districts went to the polls with the people remember there was a bad year for teresa mae and conservatives in the local elections. in a particular instance, the local democrats took three of the four district councils. they were going well then but we had a general election months later, the lib dems didn't do well at all. it's a county where where they once were so strong you think back to those times to where they held most of the parliamentary seats in somerset, did really well across the west country, that all hit the buffers back in 2005 at the end of the coalition, they were wiped off the map in terms of parliamentary seats in the west country. it didn't looking for a way back. this election they went into it a long way behind the conservatives in terms of the countywide vote last time they hope to make real progress, they thought they might end up is the biggest party but what they actually got was a big solid majority. the tories were really pumped across the county, it was a bad result for them. if you look at the other parties, labour, very small in somerset state where they were, there is half the green cows are, no real change there, a few independents again, no real change, it was a lib dems going forward the conservatives going backward very badly. conservatives going backward very badl . , ., , ., badly. the question is, how concerned _ badly. the question is, how concerned are _ badly. the question is, how| concerned are conservatives badly. the question is, how i concerned are conservatives in badly. the question is, how - concerned are conservatives in the west of england about the prospect and the general election faced with and the general election faced with a resurgent lib dem party? what are they saying to you?— they saying to you? interesting, i was talking to — they saying to you? interesting, i was talking to one conservative i they saying to you? interesting, i i was talking to one conservative mp yesterday is saying, on the one hand, five years ago yes, we did really well in local elections here but then three years ago we had a pretty dire at night. he was saying we can expect these ups and downs, putting it onto a bit of midterm blues but that was before the results came in. i don't think he was expecting, i don't think any of the conservatives in somerset were expecting it to be as bad as it really was. so they will be worried because it's this sense of resurgence against the conservatives. in the other parts conservatives. in the other parts conservatives have held their ground to quite a degree against labor. they really gone backwards where they're up against the lib dem. if you look at the road actually the m5 to cheltenham where half the seats were being contested there, the lib dems already ran that council. what we saw today was the conservatives slipping backwards even more. and that will be a real concern to the conservative mp there who sits on a very marginal majority. i would say for conservative mps, it's a real worry. some trying to say this is just a midterm ripple, if you like, people expressing their discontent. i know when i was out in somerset talking to people i met quite a b who said, yes, i would normally vote conservative but because of what's going on naturally story, i think. daisy cooper there, great mp, lib dem been a strong team of campaigners was that i think they do really well. somerset is a worry. the mp for yeovil is now calling tonight for a change in economic strategy, he's not sure about personalities but he thinks the policy is wrong on taxation. that area is where the new headache for boris johnson taxation. that area is where the new headache for borisjohnson going next week is what are we doing here, we are losing sight of these areas. time and again overnight talking to conservatives who were feeling the pain and even earlier today i think we are talking earlier, same kind of message, there needs to be more help for people, taxation policy is wrong, national insurance policy misguided, if there is to be extra help it needs to beat now, not waiting for the budget, there is no kind of time to lose especially given the fact that people are signalling a bit of a crisis going on. first of all, you kick off with this one. is that likely? we had rishi sunak saying it would be silly to start off doing that offering more help to people we know it can happen in the autumn. he explained that very clearly in his thinking was september. looking into the party conferences and there's no way the tories will go through all the party conferences with the lib dems in labour and have no answer to the huge increase in energy prices in october. going back from that, looking at the reshuffle in september, looking at three difficult elections for by elections for different reasons, also some tory mps feel there's a need to renew files with their leader, that can't come soon enough. the pressure ed davey lost two stone, looking punchy, looking sharp, is an interesting thought for the tories was that they were this year. so the lib dems became the biggest party. they also lost seats in cambridge and of course lost worthing counsel to labor. it's been really difficult for the conservatives the set of results. i think we look at places like tunbridge wells, i do think party gate clearly has played a part in peoples decision—making. when you go out and about speak to people in tunbridge wells, they do raise it, they don't talk about it, some of they don't talk about it, some of the activists i've talked to said it came up quite a lot on the doorstep. of came up quite a lot on the doorstep. of you go and hopefully you will have a nice evening. plenty for us to discuss in i'm looking forward to what you will be including in your publications on the results. thank you very much for being with us. why do we catch up with the weather. it's thomas tonight. hi thomas, how are you? good evening. the earlier rain across northern and western parts of the uk should largely fizzle out through the evening and overnight. and that means that the weekend should be generally dry, sunny spells, just a few showers in the forecast, i think, tomorrow. so, here's the latest satellite picture, as the weather front crosses the country and moves southwards, here it is very early in the morning, and then i think by the middle of the day, it should be out of the picture, as high pressure builds in. so, through the early hours, a few showers there in east anglia and the southeast. elsewhere across the country, it's a case of clearing skies and our temperatures around seven o'clock in the morning on saturday around 9 celsius in belfast, seven celsius in glasgow, 13 degrees in london with that cloud and a few showers. now, the forecast indicates a fair bit of cloud across east anglia and the southeast in the morning. it could hang around through the afternoon as well, could be some showers, showers also could develop from southern parts of wales across the pen pennines, just about into the midlands. i think the best of the sunshine will be out towards the west across wales, southwestern parts of england, the higher temperatures here up to around 19 degrees or so. all in all, i think saturday is going to be a mostly fine day. here's sunday, high pressure still in charge, butjust starting to drift out towards the north sea. and this low pressure makes inroads. so, on sunday, i think increasing amounts of cloud out towards the northwest. i think more than anything, its hazy skies. elsewhere, scattered fairweather clouds with light winds, temperatures inland up to around 18—19 degrees, on the north sea coast, a bit fresher there, closer to 14 degrees. now, here's monday. that weather front really does push in across northern ireland and into scotland, so some wet and breezy weather at times here. but across the midlands, east anglia and the southeast, it's going to be a fine monday with sunshine and quite warm too. given some sunshine, temperatures could get up to around 21 degrees. now, here's the outlook for next week. now, you will notice that the breeze is mostly coming off the atlantic, so it's not going to be all that warm. still temperatures probably in the high teens, just about 20 degrees across the south, but the thinking is that elsewhere across the country, it will be a good deal cooler with frequent showers and breezy weather. bye— bye. good evening, and welcome back to our special bbc election coverage. this has been our home nearly for 24 hours now, monitoring all the election results, and as they come in, most of them have come in, we have been looking in detail at some of the english council election results which have taught as a great deal about the various related positions of the parties in england at the moment. the wheels i , most of them in —— wales results, showing a different pattern, conservatives having a tough time there. in scotland, the snp all—powerful, but labour having moved into second place ahead of the conservatives, and in northern ireland, lots of the results still to come, but sinn fein have made history in northern ireland because they are the top
