now, you do get of the places that we are talking about, places like mariupol, which is so very difficult to get into, and to see what is actually happening now, you do get often these counter narratives that go into different directions. we have certainly heard this afternoon that another attempt to evacuate civilians from mariupol has been unsuccessful. we were told that around 200 of them were waiting to be collected by bosses around the city when they were told by russian soldiers if they did not disperse, they were at risk of being shelled. we keep hearing these different studies, but what i think is indisputable at this point is that the situation for people who are still trapped in mariupol is incredibly difficult and it is, as has been described for those hundred or so, 100,000 or so people know any city, a humanitarian catastrophe. and what about kyiv, where you are, has a relative calm returned to the city? it tends to be fluctuating picture hidden cave, you still hear the air raid sirens regularly, there is still a curfew overnight, people are not allowed to be out on the streets —— a fluctuating picture here in kyiv. it is still a very quiet city, a lot of people have not returned just yet. they have led to the start of the invasion when it was feared that russia may take this capital city. the former professional boxer has been saying he does not capital city's russian threat is not over yet. as we were hearing, an attempted ukrainian evacuation of civilians from the shattered city of mariupol, where many remain trapped, has been "thwarted" by russian forces, according to a city official. around 200 residents had gathered at the evacuation meeting point announced by kyiv, but russian forces "dispersed" them. earlier i spoke to yuriy sak — an advisor to the ukrainian defence ministry, and he told me that the situation there is desperate. the efforts to arrange evacuation corridors have been attempted for a number of days now, because there are over 1,000 civilians trapped in the azovstal steelworks alone. there are also 500, over 500 wounded ukrainian soldiers there, and in the city of mariupol itself, there are tens of thousands of civilians who are still seeking shelter in the basements of the residential houses and buildings, and those people, they are willing, of course, to evacuate. they want to seek shelter in the ukrainian—controlled territories. unfortunately, as you've said, these attempts at evacuation have failed because the russian side does not honour any of the reached agreements and continues to shell evacuation corridors. so we still have to wait and see, but, for the moment, the situation is very difficult, and despite the fact that we are, today, the easter holiday is coming up, nevertheless, russian armed forces are not showing any respect for human life and they are not willing to allow civilian people to leave mariupol. the russian side says you should have allowed your forces at the steel plant to surrender. why was this not an option? ukrainian armed forces who are now defending mariupol — and they have been defending it for almost two months now — they've said it very clearly that surrender is not an option. they've said it clearly because we understand that russian armed forces — russian armed forces who have committed every possible war crime since the beginning of this aggressive war — it is not possible to negotiate with them. it is not possible to reach any agreement. therefore, you know, the ukrainian soldiers who are still in azovstal steelworks, they are not prepared to surrender to these war criminals. they've said it clearly, however, that if a third party was involved and if a third party would broker a safe passage of our soldiers from azovstal then perhaps it would have been possible, but this is the only option. they will not surrender, they will not leave without their weapons. and, of course, at the moment, most of their efforts are focused on making sure that civilians can be evacuated from azovstal. president zelensky is holding a briefing right now. that's my cross live to it. translation: it that's my cross live to it. translation:— with both turkey and azerbaijan, but here i would like to talk individually because in turkey, there are diplomatic meetings of our subgroups taking place. turkey is actually showing at once to be a leader, the leader among the countries who want to perform a mediation role in this process. turkey is openly stating that it wants to become the guarantors, to be among the guarantors of security and marine le pen. the pair have gone head to head before — and while opinion polls suggest that macon is in the lead, the gap between the two candidates appears much smaller this time round. my colleague reeta chakrabarti has been following the final days of the election from paris. i'm joined now by christophe bertossi from the institute for democracy to talk about the issues at hand. christophe, when emmanuel macron was elected five years ago, he campaigned as a centrist, attracted support from left and right, and yet today this feels like a more polarised electorate than before. you're right. and i think that you can even say that the far right and marine le pen has never been that high in the poll intentions than this time. and i think the result will be very tight. so it's part of the ambivalence of the the recent politics under macron's first mandate, where the muslim called the french secularism debate was very strong in a way to stigmatise muslims, to say that muslims, french muslims were not entirely french. all these ideas that were for a long time those of the far right are now very present through the entire political spectrum. and members of macron's government played that role in making the far right very strong. the stronger the far right, the weaker the left. and the right, which is exactly the scenario macron intended to get in order to have a chance to be re—elected tomorrow. it's very interesting you say that, because many would say that marine le pen has actually toned down her rhetoric on immigration and law and order, and she concentrates more on ordinary issues like the cost of living. you're right. and she tried to go through a normalisation process like the far right in italy did and she took that example as a role model for the strategy. but also outside, the debate since the assassination three years ago, which was a very strong shock byjihadists, this school teacher was beheaded, etc. after that, you had a very strong debate about the role of anti—racist militants who were denounced as the objective allies ofjihadists. so in the end, with that very complex debate, members of the government declared that anti—racism is more dangerous than racism itself because it's used by people who don't want to belong to french society, against the french society to make claims. of course, this is very, very disputable, but that has made marine le pen more mainstream than ever before. so what we have now is a centrist candidate and a candidate that most people think of as far right. where is the left in all this? what will happen to all those voters, the 7.7 million who voted for the far left candidate, melanchon, in the first round, what will they do? well, that's that's a big dilemma. many will vote against marine le pen, but the disappointment they have of macron's policies will probably be an impediment to their going to vote tomorrow again and maybe abstention will be very high. so that's the most important risk we have tomorrow if abstention is high, marine le pen has a chance to win the election. christophe bertossi, very good to hear your thoughts. thank you very much. well, we are waiting, of course, for that result tomorrow. the polls close at 8pm local time. we'll find out the result then. let's finish with some sport. almost 100,000 fans will fill london's wembley stadium later as it hosts one of the biggest all—british heavyweight bouts in history. tyson fury will defend his wbc heavyweight title against dillian whyte. it'll be fury*s second defence of the title he won from deontay wilder in february 2020. earlier, we heard from jamie moore, former british, commonwealth and european boxing champion, now boxing trainer. he says whyte is definitely capable of beating tyson fury. he's more than capable of doing it. i think it'll be a very competitive fight. i don't think many people are giving him that much of a chance because tyson fury, over the last few years, has just been head and shoulders above everyone else. but i think it'll be much more competitive than people are expecting. tyson fury seems to have a lot of strings to his bow in terms of his style. generally, he uses his height and reach to his advantage and he is very mobile for the size of him. we've seen in his fight with deontay wilder, he can really mix it up, he can go forward and he carries a lot of power as well, so i think he'll go in and out of different styles. dillian whyte, he's generally a pressure fighter, he comes forward, he's a good body puncher, so i think he'll try and wear tyson fury down on the body. one to watch! that's all from us now. you can reach me on twitter — i'm @celiahatton. hello, again. well, the weekend's got off to a pretty decent start weather—wise. for the vast majority, it's been a dry day. there've just been one or two showers dotted around here and there. but some sunshine for most of us — that was edinburgh castle, overlooking the blossoms there in the gardens below. now, the satellite picture. to the north of the uk in the north atlantic, we've got a big bank of low cloud, and that is going to be coming towards the uk into next week, but before we get there, today we have had some cloud, particularly across wales and western areas of england, and that cloud has produced one 01’ two showers. now, they'll fade away but we could see another batch just running into the south of england for a time overnight. away from that, cloudy again for northern scotland, but for most it's a dry night with clear skies. temperatures getting down to between three and seven celsius, perhaps a few areas of frost in some of the deeper valleys in scotland. now, for the second half of the weekend, it's another fine—looking day. lots of sunshine around, both morning and afternoon, and i think overall there'll be fewer showers, so the vast majority of you will have a dry day. still pretty cloudy across the far north of scotland, but otherwise sunny spells. now, again, we've got these east, north—easterly winds working across the chilly waters out in the north sea where the sea temperatures are onlyjust coming up from their wintertime lows, and that does have an effect on the temperatures. for eastern areas, 11 to m degrees. the highest temperatures, again, across the south and west — we're looking at highs of 18 in cardiff and for london. for monday, still a fair bit of dry weather but we are going to see some showers across central and eastern england. some of those could turn out to be quite heavy for a time during the afternoon. away from that, though, a fair bit of dry weather, but it's starting to turn cloudy and cool across northern areas of scotland. ten degrees in stornoway, 11 in aberdeen. in the sunshine further south, 14s and 15s. for the most part, tuesday is where we see that big area of low cloud i showed you on the satellite picture. well, that works down the north sea and then starts to spread inland, so quite a bit of dry weather still around, but quite a lot of cloud, as well, and given the cloudy skies, just nine degrees in aberdeen and newcastle. highest temperatures 15—16 for cardiff and for london, but, really, the rest of the week does look pretty cloudy at times. temperatures not as high as they have been. the best of any limited sunshine will be across western areas.
