face—masks in indoor public spaces. for all of you watching on pbs and around the globe, a warm welcome. there has been a missile attack this morning on the western ukrainian city of lviv, which until now has largely escaped unscathed since the russian invasion began. the latest reports say six people have been killed and eight wounded. a bbc correspondent in the city says he watched the missile fly over as he stood on the roof of a hotel. residents spoke of hearing five explosions on the outskirts of the city and smoke was seen rising from residential areas. overnight, there's been an apparent intensification of the russian bombardment, with multiple targets across ukraine targeted by air strikes and shelling. five people have reportedly been killed and 13 injured in shelling of the city of kharkiv while in mykolaiv, near the port of odesa, the governor reports continuous rocket attacks. of the shattered city of mariupol, ukraine's foreign minister has said: "the situation is dire militarily and heartbreaking. it doesn't exist any more". the remainder of the ukrainian army and large groups of civilians decided to raze the city to the ground at any cost. our correspondent danjohnson is in lviv and gave us this update about the missile strikes. this morning, it does look like there has been a strike on lviv. we're not able to swing our camera around to show you at the moment. the ukrainian officials ask us not to do that in the immediate aftermath of an attack, butjust off—camera, there are plumes of smoke now coming from the city's skyline and from this rooftop position, i actually heard the jets flying overhead myself. i saw a missile flying through the air, then landing on the edge of the city. that's where we can now see black smoke coming from. it looks like there has been an attack. four explosions reported this morning, we believe close to the city's railway station. this will really put people on edge here. they thought that lviv was a relatively safe place in the west of ukraine, hundreds of miles away from the fighting in the east. but this underlines the sort of threat that is posed to people across the country, because we've seen attacks on a number of cities as well as the capital, kyiv, in the last few days. russia had been targeting military facilities. exactly what has been hit here this morning, we're still waiting to find out. but certainly, people in lviv now know the scale of the threat of russian air attack if, indeed, that is what this proves to have been. it is a nervy time for people in this city and in other cities right across ukraine. meanwhile, our correspondent sean dilley reports now on the encirclement of the southeastern city of mariupol. mariupol has not yet fallen — technically. ukrainian troops who had until recently defended the now—occupied streets are held up in the city's vast azovstal steelworks, despite an ultimatum by president putin's forces to surrender no later than yesterday. russian troops know that ukrainians are waiting inside, ready to welcome them with guerrilla tactics in their last stand for the strategic port city. as the rockets continue to fall across the country, a parallel information war rages. this unverified picture of the russian black sea flagship the moskva — which sank on thursday — was posted online. ukraine claimed they struck it with two neptune missiles. russia insisted it had nothing to do with their enemy, and that a fire caused an explosion that would eventually cause it to capsize while being towed to port. meanwhile, shelling continues across the country, with president putin's forces intensifying activities in the east. in kharkiv, ukrainian health officials say five people were killed and 13 injured after russian forces shelled buildings in the centre of the city. translation: you know| when a dog hears a bang, it starts to tremble all over — even if the noise is far away? i'm like that now. everything — every part of me — is trembling. authorities in mykolaiv say shelling has been unyielding. rockets fell one after the other as ukrainian forces tried to block russia's attempts to advance on nearby odessa. translation: we are doing. everything to ensure defence. we're in constant contact with partners. we are grateful to those who really help with everything they can. but those who have the weapons and ammunition we need and delay their provision must know that the fate of this battle also depends on them, the fate of the people who can be saved. explosions. the country's leadership is bracing itself for more attacks today, but talks have already started on what happens when the shelling stops. ukraine's president volodymyr zelensky has spoken to the head of the international monetary fund — it's expected the country will ask the imf and g7 countries for $50 billion to help it rebuild. but the reality is, no reconstruction work is possible until the conflict ends. sean dilley, bbc news. with me now is our correspondent anna foster. she is in the ukrainian capital, kyiv. but i want to begin with lviv, where you have also spent time. we talked about the relative safety of that city. it's a place where lots of ukrainians have moved from other parts of the country, or pass through on their way to poland and other countries. overnight, that situation has changed, hasn't it? it has. you are right to say that people in lviv deliver relatively normal life at the moment. the last time there was a strike on lviv was when i was there three weeks ago. it is rare to see a strike of this kind in the west, but it's important to remember that that is where a lot of the we supply chains, a lot of the ammunition and weapons that are being donated, everything comes from the west. a lot of it comes across the west. a lot of it comes across the polish border. so there is always russian interest in the area if it wants to disrupt supply chains. as we heard, early this morning, these four to five missile strikes in lviv, six people we are told the governor, have been killed, including a child. in terms of what they were trying to strike, we were told it was three military infrastructure points. we don't know much more about what was being produced there. the authorities in lviv also said a civilian car repair shop had been targeted. right across this country, there are places like kharkiv and mariupol where we talk about the near constant shelling, but there is still a sense of normality as you go further west. as you say, it is where a lot of people moved to seek sanctuary. when they see things like this attack this morning, it gives people a fresh sense of nervousness and fear. find sense of nervousness and fear. and on the other— sense of nervousness and fear. and on the other side of the country in mykolaiv, where hearing from the ukrainian foreign minister some sobering lines. he says the situation is dire militarily and heartbreaking. it doesn't exist are the ukrainians saying that russia now has control of mariupol? that's a aood now has control of mariupol? that's a good question- — now has control of mariupol? that's a good question. they _ now has control of mariupol? that's a good question. they are - now has control of mariupol? that's a good question. they are very - a good question. they are very reluctant to see defeat somewhere like that. for russia, it is a strategically important city. it is somewhere they want to take to give them a land bridge between russia and annexed crimea. after the loss of the russian flag ship the moskva, which was sunk by ukrainian sows a few days ago, this has taken on an extra symbolism for russia. if they can take mariupol in its entirety, that will give them a win to present the people at home. but we know there are still ukrainian fighters who are holed up there in the huge azovstal iron and steel works. a building like that, once they have fortified it, which they have had time to do, it gives them a base where they could potentially stay and be holed up for weeks if that was something they were trying to do. and it would seem that they are, because yesterday russia opened what it called the surrender window. it told the remaining ukrainian troops in mariupol that if they wanted to surrender, they would be treated with their rights under the geneva convention. but ukrainian fighters did not surrender, they carried on fighting and they say they will do so until the end.— so untilthe end. anna foster in k iv for so untilthe end. anna foster in kyiv for us- _ russia is saying this morning that 315 targets in ukraine were hit by artillery overnight and that some of its air strikes destroyed weapons depots. let's go live now to our correspondent jenny hill in moscow. obviously, we can't verify this number, the 315 targets the state news agency is claiming is being hit overnight, but it does look as though this is the intensification of the campaign by russia that we were told about?— of the campaign by russia that we were told about? yes. this has come from the russian _ were told about? yes. this has come from the russian ministry _ were told about? yes. this has come from the russian ministry of - from the russian ministry of defence. they say 315 targets were struck overnight across the country. but when you look at the details, we are talking about things like ammunition plants, personnel areas and all sorts of other military objects. but they are all in the south and east of the country. there is no mention of any strikes on lviv or around lviv, so we don't have details about what the targets were in lviv this morning. at the moment, the military here are officially sticking to the script that they are only targeting the south and east of the country. that is what russians are being told. with regards to mariupol, one newspaper commentator said this morning that the defeat of the enemy there is already a done deal. they are talking bullishly about what is happening and very confident about taking the whole city the ministry of defence's update is one of a couple we get every day and they were talk about the progress the russian troops are making. the the progress the russian troops are makinu. , . ,, ., making. the picture the russian --eole making. the picture the russian peeple are _ making. the picture the russian people are given, _ making. the picture the russian people are given, they - making. the picture the russian people are given, they have - making. the picture the russian i people are given, they have talked about the loss of another general. we're also hearing some reports about the loss of the flagship moskva. people are starting to ask more about that?— moskva. people are starting to ask more about that? yes, nothing here about the reported _ more about that? yes, nothing here about the reported death _ more about that? yes, nothing here about the reported death of- more about that? yes, nothing here about the reported death of this - about the reported death of this general, as you would expect. the moskva is an interesting topic because my colleague steve rosenberg yesterday noted that during a three—hour long newspaper game, just 30 seconds was devoted to the loss of this flagship, the pride of the black sea fleet. on social media and in one newspaper which is no longer being published in russia but it is a russian anti—kremlin, critical voice of the kremlin newspaper published in europe now, there are some reports circulating from relatives of some of the men on board. they say their sons are missing, orthey board. they say their sons are missing, or they have been told they have been killed, or in the case of one woman, her son has reportedly told her that a0 of his crewmates were killed. even when you look at the russian official account of what happened, they still say there was a fire on board and the ammunition caught fire and that cause damage to the hull of the ship, which then sank in stormy seas as it was being towed back to port. even if you just take that, it's hard to imagine that there wasn't any kind of loss of life or injury. but that is not what they russians are saying. as far as they russians are saying. as far as they are concerned, everyone on that vessel was taken off to they are concerned, everyone on that vessel was ta ken off to safety. jenny hill in moscow. joining me now from lviv is hanna hopko, who is a former ukrainian mp, and former head of the country's foreign affairs committee. let me begin with there is a tax in the last few hours in lviv. —— tell me what you know about those attacks on lviv? , ., ., on lviv? this morning, i had five missile attacks. _ on lviv? this morning, i had five missile attacks. i— on lviv? this morning, i had five missile attacks. i started - on lviv? this morning, i had five missile attacks. i started to - on lviv? this morning, i had five missile attacks. i started to calll missile attacks. i started to call all my friends, because we live close to the places where these attacks were done. actually, official sources say six people died, one child. this is the message from putin, that he will not stop unless we are ukraine and the collective west, by providing ukraine with the weapons we need, we stopped putin. his goal is to destroy the whole ukrainian nation. and he deliberately attacked civilians in almost all ukrainian cities. it is like 9/11 which happens every day in ukraine. his goal is to turn ukrainian cities into grozny without any condition to leave. ukrainians from kharkiv and mariupol came here, but now it's not safe for us to live in ukraine because putin wants to destroy everything. i because putin wants to destroy everything-— everything. i have spoken to anal sts everything. i have spoken to analysts who _ everything. i have spoken to analysts who have _ everything. i have spoken to analysts who have talked - everything. i have spoken to analysts who have talked of| everything. i have spoken to i analysts who have talked of the everything. i have spoken to - analysts who have talked of the race to resupply militarily on both the russian side and ukrainian side. do you think ukraine is ready to cope with an intensification of the russian campaign, if that is what we are now seeing? the state news agency in russia say 315 attacks on ukraine overnight, or that that that figure isn't verified.— figure isn't verified. yeah, but after moskva, _ figure isn't verified. yeah, but after moskva, the _ figure isn't verified. yeah, but after moskva, the flagship - figure isn't verified. yeah, but i after moskva, the flagship which figure isn't verified. yeah, but - after moskva, the flagship which was destroyed by ukrainians, putin wants to conduct revenge and to destroy all military resupply chains we are receiving from western partners. of course, we expect the idea of an airlift from western ukraine, as happened with western berlin, which has to be introduced in ukraine. what is also important is for our western partners to seek tougher sanctions, and oil and gas embargo, or to include people like the leader of the moscow orthodox church, on the sanction list. the west has to send a clear message to putin that you are with us and you have a strategy, ukraine defeating russia, and you will be with us until ukraine's victory comes. away from the front line. _ ukraine's victory comes. away from the front line, i _ ukraine's victory comes. away from the front line, i wanted _ ukraine's victory comes. away from the front line, i wanted to - ukraine's victory comes. away from the front line, i wanted to ask - ukraine's victory comes. away from the front line, i wanted to ask you | the front line, i wanted to ask you about your concerns around food security at the moment? all ukrainian — security at the moment? fill ukrainian ports are blocked and they mind black sea. so we say to the uk, god save the queen, you are helping us with military equipment. this is really important to unblock ukrainian ports and help the ukrainian ports and help the ukrainian agriculture sector to plant seeds. ukraine is among the top five exporters in the world of food, and it's important that this spring season, we are using all the land to plant seeds for the future and not to avoid hunger in africa, the middle east and other continents.— the middle east and other continents. . ., ., ~ the middle east and other continents. . ., . ~' continents. hanna hopko, thank you very much- — continents. hanna hopko, thank you very much. hanna _ continents. hanna hopko, thank you very much. hanna hopko, _ continents. hanna hopko, thank you very much. hanna hopko, former. very much. hanna hopko, former ukrainian mp. people in scotland no longer need to wearfacemasks in indoor public places from today. it's the final part of the uk to remove the legal requirement, which has been replaced by public health advice. the scottish government has advised people to continue wearing face coverings while covid case numbers remain high. meanwhile, police in scotland are assessing a complaint about the first minister, nicola sturgeon, not wearing a face—covering. video footage on social media appears to show ms sturgeon without a mask inside a barber's, despite it being a legal requirement until today. the snp said she realised within a few seconds, and put herface covering on. the authorities in the chinese city of shanghai have reported the first covid deaths since 2020. official figures show three people died on sunday. all had underlying health conditions. the city is under a tough new lockdown, with residents complaining of being unable to secure food, while some have been ejected from their homes to create quarantine centres. our china correspondent stephen mcdonell has the latest. well, obviously the question of what causes death is a complicated one and in this case, officials are saying that all three people who died from covid also had underlying health problems. but there have been questions, i mean, a lot of people asking, with a00,000, over a00,000 official coronavirus infections in this outbreak in shanghai, and until today, there had been no official death. and many people have been asking, how can that be? but if you look at these three cases, two women aged 89 and 91, and a man aged 91, we are told none of them had been vaccinated and as i say, they all had underlying health problems. but this question of vaccination is interesting because some new figures have come out and it does seem to show that china really has dropped the ball when it comes to booster shots. so take those in shanghai over the age of 60. 62% have had their third shot. but when you go to the booster shots, it's only 38% of people over the age of 60. well, a lot of health professionals are going to say that's not enough, it needs to be much higher. and so some have been asking why the government is still pursuing this strategy of mass isolation, mass testing, closing down cities, in shanghai, locking down 25 million people, instead of pursuing the core problem at this stage, which is the lack of booster shots. nearly a50 people have died in devastating floods in the province of kwazulu—natal in eastern south africa. teams of rescue workers are continuing to search for dozens who are still missing, but their efforts have been hampered by yet more rain. our correspondent pumza fihlani is in durban and sent us the latest. grey skies and weather conditions here are slowing down efforts for rescue workers. we know that teams have come in from various provinces to offer their support and extra hands, because at the moment the rescue workers from this province are at capacity. there are about 68 people that are trying to get to communities not just here in durban, but in surrounding areas. the local officials have said they are still getting call—outs a week after the floods from communities who say they are stranded and have yet to receive any sort of help. and because the roads and bridges have been destroyed where they are, help hasn't arrived to them. they are talking about water shortages, having no power orfood or warm blankets or any sort of clothing at the moment. the national treasury has committed about $68 million to this province that is going to help with relief efforts. that's expected to start trickling in in the next few days. a big part of that money will not just go towards trying to rebuild this province, but helping people with getting their homes rebuilt, with burials that need to happen over the next few weeks. they're also providing food for communities that have lost everything. but there's also concerns on the sidelines about how those monies will be distributed. we've seen in the past in these instances, where there have been reports of corruption and money not getting to the appropriate communities. that is something that residents here have expressed concern about. but the president has said he has received calls from international communities pledging to help where they can and offering to bring in expertise wherever it is necessary. there will be massive projects to rebuild some roads and schools will need to happen here over the next few months. it is expected that they will be calling on various countries to assist with expertise around engineering particularly, because one of the concerns now is that the extreme weather conditions that this province has been seeing in the last few years means that the current infrastructure will not be able to sustain anything like this in the future. a decade of war has ruined syria's economy and it's now emerging as a narco—state, with illegal drugs as one of its biggest exports. the stimulant, captagon — a class a drug in the uk — is widely used across the arab world. in recent weeks, thejordanian army has seized large hauls of drugs and killed more than 30 smugglers in operations along its border. our middle east correspondent, yolande knell has been to this front line of the regional war on drugs. three shadowy figures across the border fence. jordanian soldiers open fire. another skirmish in an increasingly deadly fight against drug smugglers. they want to show me what they're up against. it's a great view from here. you can see, everything beyond the fence, that is syria. and this is a new front line in the war on drugs. ruined by a decade of war, neighbouring syria is turning into a narco—state. after losing a jordanian soldier, the military has adopted a shoot to kill policy. and how much more dangerous is it now along this border? translation: the degree | of danger has grown recently with the increase in drug smuggling. there are highly organised and coordinated operations. they are determined to get the drugs intojordan by force, using weapons. since the start of this year, the army has killed more than 30 smugglers, and seized over 17 million pills of captagon. that's more than in the whole of last year. this illegal amphetamine is now one of syria's main exports. this hospital is treating more and more people from across the region for captagon addiction. none of the patients here wants to talk, but the clinical director tells me he sees serious cases. the consequences of taking this drug is, like, violence and psychosis. it is very addictive as well and people start with one tablet and then increase by two or three, and then shift into a more serious drug like crystal meth. jordan is up against powerful drugs cartels. the long conflict next door now brings a new misery. yolande knell, bbc news, amman. the new york city easter parade tradition is back, after covid—19 put a stop to it last year. hundreds gathered on 5th avenue on sunday to celebrate easter and the coming of spring and many of them were wearing the elaborate hats that are a hallmark of the event. you can get in touch with me on twitter. hello again. we had the warmest day of this year so far on good friday when the temperature in london reached 23.a celsius. today, it's going to be cooler. there's a few showers around. but equally, there's some sunshine. we've got two weather fronts moving in the direction of the north sea. they're all wrapped around this area of low pressure which later will bring us a more persistent rain across the north west, accompanied by strong winds. here are our two weather fronts. here's the first one and here's the second one. and as they move away, we're going to see a mixture of sunshine and showers, some bright spells, but don't forget, the more persistent rain and the stronger winds coming into the north west, where we're looking at highs of 10 degrees. in lighter winds further south, 1a—17 will feel quite pleasant. but if you have an allergy to tree pollen, worth noting that the levels across the east and the south of england today are high. through this evening and overnight, many but not all of the showers will fade. there will be areas of cloud, we will have clear skies, a few mist and fog patches forming, and a weather front continuing to bring cloud and rain across north—west scotland, just getting into northern ireland. it will be cold enough in parts of scotland and northern ireland for the temperature to fall as low as freezing. tomorrow, then, here is the same weather front bringing some showery outbreaks of rain. we've got low pressure to the north of us. the weather front bringing in the rain notjust to scotland but also northern ireland. but we're not talking about heavy rain. at times, there will be more cloud across england and wales, but some breaks in the cloud and a little bit of sunshine coming through, and a few showers. the best of the sunshine on the west coast. temperatures down a touch on today. into wednesday, a largely dry day for most of us. again, you can see, we are looking at some areas of cloud, one or two showers out to the west. these weather fronts coming in from the atlantic, not making huge progress, bringing in a wee bit more cloud to the west of northern ireland at times, and temperatures between 9—18 degrees. as we head into the latter part of the week, the low pressure in the north sinks southwards, taking the weather fronts with it. we have more of an easterly wind across our shores as we go through wednesday, thursday and into friday, and a noticeable wind at that. so that basically means if you're on the east coast, the north sea coastline, it will feel cooler than in the west where we will have the higher temperatures. we could get up to 18 in cardiff. it's not fair, the boys never have to come home and help. i wonder if i had an arranged marriage, would i get someone who'd let me play football whenever i wanted? who are you talking to? move on up by curtis mayfield plays. bend it like beckham was a huge success and it made history as the highest grossing film about football. # hush now, child...# my mum probably hates the film because we've watched it that many times. there are so many elements of it that are still true today. -
