league game at home to watford because of a high number of injuries and covid—i9 cases in the squad. the fixture was originally due to be played in december but was called off because of an outbreak at watford. if it's postponed, it will be the 22nd top flight game to be rescheduled because of the pandemic, which has caused a lot of talk about how football can continue in this way. i think it's very difficult for the premier league. they keep referring back to the fact that clubs need 13 players plus a goalkeeper, and then they should play the games. then people start talking about injuries in addition to covid, and also, international calls. one of the issues the premier league are wrestling with which managers have raised is because players are out with covid, that was an increased responsibility almost on the players who are fit. they have to play more games and are at risk of injury, so that comes into the equation. the premier league also say that for all the games that have been called off, there are a similar number who don't get called off, and it's about whether you fit the criteria or not. we've clearly been in a situation in some point in this season where lots of teams have got lots of games to play with no obvious place where to go. simon stone, and there is more on that story on the football news show available to watch right now. it was all eyes on group a another humiliating defeat, england's ashes tour is finally over. they lost inside three days in the final test in tasmania to leave the country on the wrong end of a a—nil scoreline. the result will no doubt leave much soul searching among the players, but also real concern among those who run english cricket about the deterioration of england's test side. here are the thoughts of their head coach, chris silverwood. we need to somehow find a way of gaining championship throughout the year, so back when i was playing, all the way through the end, during the middle of the summer the wickets flatten out. somehow, we have to make it out. i think by me speaking out about it, hopefully it will get us around the table. and find a way, find a plan of fitting this into the schedule. give these guys a platform to learn the trade and become better at building a new partnership. we need a platform for them to do that, and i think that's one of the changes that we need to sit down and talk about — how do we get that into county cricket? giving them an opportunity. you can question whether or not these guys have an opportunity within the domestic game. to learn the skills they need to comprehend this level. i would hope the counties want to do that, and secondly, something that needs to be discussed and discussed harder about what other solutions... i've got no particular one right now, but i think it's something that we have to sit down and have a real robust conversation about and find a way. interesting to hear. well, i'm delighted to say that we can speak to the former england coach, paul farbrace, now. paul, such a disappointing tour for england and interesting to hear chris silverwood say that first class cricket needs to be played more extensively and through the middle of the summer. a lot of interest in the county structure and whether it's working or not. what are your thoughts on that? , .,, ., ., ., that? every time we lose a ma'or series, that? every that? every time we lose a major i series, we have massive inquests in the game in england. very often, county cricket is the butter of all the issues. and i don't believe that county cricket is the only issue. i think there's a lot of issues he's sorting out. i think county cricket has produced a lot of good players over many, many years. i don't think the pictures are as bad as everyone talks about. it's not ideal, and the two areas we're very short in in this country and in terms of producing our spin bowlers and opening batters. they're the stuff is —— the toughest. there is some merit. i think we do need to look at the game as a whole, and i think we're all responsible for the good of the england test team because we want england to play well. we want england to compete and we want and i count myself, i think we need to look at ourselves as a group of coaches. i think we've got quite lazy in our coaching, and i believe we've made it very easy to play to perform with techniques aren't good enough. that's a huge part of it. i'm not pointing a finger at the england coaching team and saying they're lazy, but there's a lot of players having improved in a numbers of games. that's quite disappointing. i was involved as assistant coach when we lost in australia, and everything we said then, having lost that series 4—0, saying exactly the same now. we're not learning as a team, as a country, as a nation. we aren't learning our lessons because we can't keep saying the same things every four years. that is just madness. so, there's a lot of things we need to address. i think coaching is one of them and i think we need to start getting good basic techniques into our young players from an early age, giving them the best chance. let's not point the finger at county cricket, politicians. i think they should all be ashamed of themselves, and i think novak will rise from this like a phoenix. he will be greater than ever. they don't know what they did to him. let's go live against the australian government, which ensured that he would be deported, saying he was disappointed and regretted the fact that so much focus and attention has shifted onto him and away from the tournament. i think he will try and maintain some silence in the next few days. certainly, there's no prospect of any kind of reception or orchestrated event. politicians expressed their outrage, same with members of his family. and he retains the support, he really is a national hero and his popularity is unwavering here despite the controversy of this 12 day legal saga. but it will take some recovering from, as it must*ve taken a lot out of him. i think he will try now tojust a lot out of him. i think he will try now to just recover, and then see if he can prepare for his next second time. it would require all athletes to be vaccinated if they want to compete in public arenas, and even though this incredible saga, one of the most dramatic stories that tennis has seen, one that sparks global debates about vaccination policy, appears to be over for now. there are real signs that there could be more issues, more trouble for novak djokovic because of his stance going league game at home to watford because of a high number of injuries and covid—i9 cases in the squad. the fixture was originally due to be played in december but was called off because of an outbreak at watford. if it's postponed, it will be the 22nd top flight game to be rescheduled because of the pandemic, which has caused a lot of talk about how football can continue in this way. i think it's very difficult for the premier league. they keep referring back to the fact that clubs need 13 players plus a goalkeeper, and then they should play the games. then people start talking about injuries in addition to covid, and also, international calls. one of the issues the premier league are wrestling with which managers have raised is because players are out with covid, that was an increased responsibility almost on the players who are fit. they have to play more games and are at risk of injury, so that comes into the equation. the premier league also say that for all the games that have been called off, there are a similar number who don't get called off, and it's about whether you fit the criteria or not. we've clearly been in a situation in some point in this season where lots of teams have got lots of games to play with no obvious place where to go. simon stone, and there is more on that story on the football news show available to watch right now. it was all eyes on group a at the africa cup of nations today, with qualification on offer for the knockout stages. cameroon were hoping to finish with a 100% record. they took a first half lead against cape verde thanks to vincent abouba kar. but they had to settle for a draw after garry rodrigues equalised. it was enough for cameroon to win the group though. burkina faso will face the group c runners—up. after they finished second. thanks to a 1—1 draw. ethiopians equaliser secure their only point of the tournament as they finished the bottom of group a. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the news today. former tottenham midfielder christian eriksen could return to the premier league, with brentford interested in signing him. eriksen had to leave inter milan because serie a don't allow players to play if they've got implanted defibrillators like the one he has after his cardiac arrest at euro 2020. full crowds return to outdoor sporting events in scotland today after covid restrictions limiting numbers to 500 people were eased. and the scottish premiership returns this evening with celtic hosting hibs, celtic six points behind leaders rangers. three—time paralympic three—time pa ralympic medallist continued three—time paralympic medallist continued her preparations for march's beijing games. she won the super combined visually impaired title. after another humiliating defeat, england's ashes tour is finally over. they lost inside three days in the final test in tasmania to leave the country on the wrong end of a a—nil scoreline. the result will no doubt leave much soul searching among the players, but also real concern among those who run english cricket about the deterioration of england's test side. here are the thoughts of their head coach, chris silverwood. we need to somehow find a way of gaining championship throughout the year, so back when i was playing, all the way through the end, during the middle of the summer the wickets flatten out. somehow, we have to make it out. i think by me speaking out about it, hopefully it will get us around the table. and find a way, find a plan of fitting this into the schedule. give these guys a platform to learn the trade and become better at building a new partnership. we need a platform for them to do that, and i think that's one of the changes that we need to sit down and talk about — how do we get that into county cricket? giving them an opportunity. you can question whether or not these guys have an opportunity within the domestic game. to learn the skills they need to comprehend this level. i would hope the counties want to do that, and secondly, something that needs to be discussed and discussed harder about what other solutions... i've got no particular one right now, but i think it's something that we have to sit down and have a real robust conversation about and find a way. interesting to hear. well, i'm delighted to say that we can speak to the former england coach, paul farbrace, now. paul, such a disappointing tour for england and interesting to hear chris silverwood say that first class cricket needs to be played more extensively and through the middle of the summer. a lot of interest in the county structure and whether it's working or not. what are your thoughts on that? , .,, ., ., ., that? every time we lose a ma'or series, that? every time we lose a ma'or we — that? every time we lose a ma'or series, we have i that? every time we lose a ma'or series, we have massive that? every time we lose a major| series, we have massive inquests that? every time we lose a major i series, we have massive inquests in the game in england. very often, county cricket is the butter of all the issues. and i don't believe that county cricket is the only issue. i think there's a lot of issues he's sorting out. i think county cricket has produced a lot of good players over many, many years. i don't think the pictures are as bad as everyone talks about. it's not ideal, and the two areas we're very short in in this country and in terms of producing our spin bowlers and opening batters. they're the stuff is —— the toughest. there is some merit. i think we do need to look at the game as a whole, and i think we're all responsible for the good of the england test team because we want england to play well. we want england to compete and we want england to compete and we want england to compete and we want england to win the ashes back and when test matches.— england to win the ashes back and when test matches. looking at the issues, when issues, where would you put - when test matches. looking at the i issues, where would you put coaching in the level of coaching in the —— that the players are receiving? i think coaching is a whole, and i count myself, i think we need to look at ourselves as a group of coaches. i think we've got quite lazy in our coaching, and i believe we've made it very easy to play to perform with techniques aren't good enough. that's a huge part of it. i'm not pointing a finger at the england coaching team and saying they're lazy, but there's a lot of players having improved in a numbers of games. that's quite disappointing. i was involved as assistant coach when we lost in australia, and everything we said then, having lost that series 4—0, saying exactly the same now. we're not learning as a team, as a country, as a nation. we aren't learning our lessons because we can't keep saying the same things every four years. that is just madness. so, there's a lot of things we need to address. i think coaching is one of them and i think we need to start getting good basic techniques into our young players from an early age, giving them the best chance. let's not point the finger at county cricket, let's look at it and a lot of other things that need to improve.— need to improve. paul, i really appreciate your _ need to improve. paul, i really appreciate your time _ need to improve. paul, i
