states to meet some of those who still believe in the conspiracy. it's been a year since the mobilising power of a conspiracy theory nearly brought the united states to its knees. at the root of a lot of the lies and misinformation about the election was qanon. when everything unfolded onjanuary sixth, what were you thinking? get us off national television. what are we doing? is that the capital? is that our shaman? in 2020, i reported on the dramatic rise of interest in qanon during the pandemic. that was a dark time and a dark place. and i spent a lot of time feeling like i was like four feet outside of my body. a year on from the attack on capitol hill, i'm travelling to the us, not to meet the grifters still spreading the conspiracy theory, but some of those who continue to believe. we got some patriots in the house. i love it. to find out why. mainstream media are all complacent, they admitted it has never changed. that's us. so, yeah, again, i don't know how, you just work for them. with a new president in power, its shadowy leader qanon no longer posting and the movement, all the banned from social media. why are some people still held firmly in its grip? i'm on the way to qanon non—believer nick natoli. back in 2020, i met nick on the internet. he's a hip hop artist and a music producer with some pretty controversial views. the pandemic wasn't real. and the race war isn't real. it's conspiracy overload for me. i first started speaking to nick about 18 months ago, at the very beginning of the pandemic. and back then he was pretty full on into a lot of qanon related conspiracy theories. but it seems like in the past few weeks, his opinion on a lot of those conspiracies has changed. we're here. # why do you hate on america? #. he lives in los angeles with his fiancee, orchid. hey. this is the only mask that i feel comfortable. i was just about to say. this mask is useless asjoe biden. you guys want something to drink, a glass of water? you have a good view. oh, it's beautiful. yeah. check it out. i come out here to think about the government and all of its tyranny. when everything unfolded onjanuary sixth, what were you thinking? i'm so embarrassed to be a part of this group right now, get us off national television. what are we doing? is that the capitol? is that our shaman? where do you think we are at the moment? because it seems to me when we started speaking a year and a half ago, this stage compared to when we've been speaking the past few weeks, things have changed. i think they definitely have. i don't want to believe in some of these nefarious, terrible things. the information that i've researched has led me there. so when the information that i've researched has not led me to there and president trump is not the president, joe biden's our president, then. yeah, like, i'm going to be a realist and say this isn't what i thought was going to happen. you know, a lot of people were supposed to get arrested. that didn't happen. now might be the time to try to explain what qanon is all about. the theory is wide ranging. at its very core is an old conspiracy theory, claiming that a powerful elite control the world and they're involved in heinous crimes such as trafficking children for satanic rituals. but they say there's hope, an inner circle of military and intelligence officials with the help of donald trump are fighting back against the cabal. a great awakening is coming. someone called 0 posted thousands of cryptic messages about this online. which followers, the anons, spent hours decoding and sharing. but just after the presidential election in 2020, q stopped posting. and so this conference that we're headed to. yes. what do you think? i'm excited. las vegas. here we come. this weekend, a group of qanon influencers are organising a patriot double—down. or a conference in las vegas. nick and i decided to check it out. qanon is a strangely organic movement. until they stopped posting, there was 0 at the top and then there's this ecosystem of influencers and grifters who spread his message. nick was excited to see some of his heroes at the conference. but first, we hit the town. i wanted to get to know nick better. and to find out what his feelings are about qanon right now. we can be talking about this stuff and then two minutes later, man, i'm sure my girl like relaxing. i'm hanging out. i'm living my own life. were you obsessed? were you at any point? when i thought this was going to crack, when i thought it was going to crack, like tomorrow morning, i was calling my mum, my brother, my sister, like, get ready. i told them. i said, make bets with people. i said, make bet that ellen's going to jail for life, for child trafficking and paedophilia. why did you feel like it's out right now? it's a confusing place, you know, trump not being president, i was a huge part of this entire belief system, you know, so these are all things that make me doubt and make me doubt my belief, too. but the reason i want you to understand that is so you know, you're not talking to somebody who is completely illogical and a crazy qanon believer. that's not who i am. you know, at the same time, prince andrew still under investigation. jeffrey epstein is not going away because they maxwells going on trialfor what? —— jeffrey epstein is not going away. ghislaine maxwell's going on trialfor what? you know, for being involved in sex trafficking withjeffrey epstein. she's involved with big people, big players. this is what the qanon belief is. it's not crazy. do you do you can you attest to that? can you understand that a little bit better? yeah. i mean, there are certainly things that have been proven to be true. there we go. she said there were some stuff that came through. to be clear, i didn't say things that q predicted have come true because they haven't. but the epstein case is real. and for nick, it's the kernel of truth he needs to keep believing. nick sees qanon as a movement of concerned citizens. doing their best to protect the world from evil. but we know that qanon can be toxic. because this is what the conspiracy has driven people to do. but who are they and are they so far away from the rest of us? one qanon follower, the q shaman, has become the face of that day, jacob was arrested and pled guilty to obstruction of congress. i'm in washington dc, the day before jacob's sentencing to meet albert watkins, his lawyer. he is heading to see jacob injail. from the first moment that i spoke with him, it became really clear that this was a kid who was being... he was an underdog of monumental proportions. he needed a good lawyer. —— he needed a good lawyer. well, no, he needs me. try to have a sense of humour, but my therapist says my delivery is a little weak. albert says that jacob is taking responsibility for what he's done, but that he should be held less culpable because of his mental health problems. you have to really look at this for what it is, a troubled young man who sought out help from the government when he was in the military in 2006 was diagnosed and it was kept secret from him. and that's wrong. and that took away from jake 15 years of focused recovery. there are a lot of people who have mental health problems, but they don't storm the capitol building. you're right, you're right. every defendant is different, every mental health vulnerable human is different. there are not many who have mental health vulnerabilities that were diagnosed in 2006 but didn't have it told to them. it's about jake. it's not about the shaman. take that exit on the right. sheriff's office and detention centre. albert is suggesting the jacob and the q shaman are two different people. one is thoughtful and intelligent. the other is paranoid and delusional. at his sentencing tomorrow, he'll have the chance to present the realjacob to the judge. albert's making a pretty good case that jake is taking some level of responsibility for what he's doing, but he's also making out that he is a victim to some extent, and all of this a victim of his mental health, of what the government did to him and qanon. but he did enter the capital that day holding a spear, intending to stop the government from certifying an election. do you think he's ready for tomorrow? he will be. jacob chansley took his beliefs to extreme ends. but this conspiracy theory is destructive in so many other ways. rachel bernstein is a therapist who's recently been dealing with families who are struggling with qanon. she came to this as a cult specialist. often i hear about these cases, they will not say i have a family member who got involved. they'll say i lost i lost my mother to this. i lost my child to this. there's an intensity to it that takes you over pretty much right away. over the past year, from what you've seen with your clients, how much has changed since the election, since january sixth? while i'm noticing that there are, again, fewer new members, which is a really good thing, still the cases that i get are very difficult. there's still so much hostility and so much aggression. the ones who have been able to leave it, they're seeing how they feel like they were played and all of the jobs they lost because of it, because they got in people's faces, the relationships they lost. i mean, they were involved at a great cost. what do you think is drawing people to it? a lot of people were dealing with having lostjobs because of the economy, because of covid having lost family members. and so people during times of anxiety, and unknown, look for the known. they look for answers and they don't necessarily question the answers because there's this sort of relaxation of anxiety and even a dopamine rush like a drug. and for other people, it was a sense of community. there was a lot of isolation, a lot of people staying at home and not having a connection. and suddenly here were these people who presented themselves online, which is this consistent force of kind of control, manipulation, even to the point of it feeling kind of intimate, like in the middle of the night, in the darkness of your bedroom. they were there for you. this made a lot of sense to me. to try to figure out why people believe in this conspiracy theory, i've been in touch with a lot of different qanon followers, mostly through the messaging app telegram. most of them were hostile, i was blocked from the app at one point after some complaints. but some were really friendly and obliging, keen to help me understand the gravity of what it is they believe is going on in the world. i received hundreds of messages, links and videos at all hours of the day and night. evidence, they said, of the conspiracy, the sinking of the titanic was the design of the order. fellow truth seekers. today i like to share a document with you. it looks to me like a portal opened. sacrifices, children being able to be sacrificed. there were a few people i spoke to on the phone for hours. they were tricked. do your family know about it? no, no, i can't let them know. the dark entities that were with our government. it felt almost intimate, even though a lot of what they were telling me was apocalyptic and frightening. more than once, someone agreed to meet in person, butjust as we were arranging everything, they backed out. i am fed up. talking to so many of these people now, they seem so willing and open to talk to us and to share all this stuff that they think is so important, and then they're just afraid that we're going to twist their words. all except kim. hi, nice to meet you. kim carpentier is a dog groomer living in southern california. she got into qanon just over a year ago. she said she has seen dolphins here. why is it i always miss them? over there is where the great whites nest. i wanted to understand how it is she got caught up in itjust as other people were coming out. i've always been one for the underdog. even when i was a kid, i was like, really... i was really an odd child. i was and i still am. i'm still odd. i'm a deep thinker. what is it that you think is going on in the world right now? what is going on. it's not think, it's out in our faces. what is going on? the elites, we've been suppressed. we've been lied to all of our lives. and my parents have flipped in their graves and it's angers me. but we are aware now the elites, we have been under british rule and now our eyes are open and we're taking our country back. we're going back to a republic. facts, only facts. ok, this is a good example. suez canal. remember that? that was in the video you sent me yesterday. what was on that? how do you think that ship was...? it was deliberately knocked into that and lodged in there because what was on it? thousands of thousands of children and women, the sex trafficking and the vaccines. it might be hard to follow, but this is qanon one and one. kim is claiming that the tankers stuck in the suez canal last year was put there to save children from the kabam. —— was put there to save children from the cabal. everything that happens in the world, every story in the news gets linked to the supposed conspiracy. nothing is as it seems. there's always an alternate explanation and an alternate reality. i really want to understand why this stuff that you've been sending me, why you find it convincing. convincing, because the documentary and the actual documentation, the filed stuff. a lot of people think that this is nonsense. they don't believe these sources. they don't believe these documents. ok, so then lay down. let me dig a hole. let mejust kick the sand over you, ok? because you're really sucking the life out of me. kim can't really pinpoint the moment that she first started to distrust everything. she used to be a professional boxer, but then, something happened to her. and that's when she got travis. he's also my service dog, because i'm blind. come on, baby. what happened to her i? i was assaulted several years ago. i had a stalker and i told the guy, "it's never going to happen, i'm never going to be attracted to you. so take your best shot," because i could see he was enraged. he assaulted me. later, she told me she'd witnessed two murders. i was beginning to realise that it's difficult for someone within this to explain their state of mind. but what about someone who no longer thinks this way? passports? there was someone with a particular perspective that i wanted to meet just over the border in canada. qanon is so enmeshed in american politics, that one of the most surprising things about it is how it's spread beyond borders. we're on the way to meet tarzan k, who was heavily wrapped up in conspiracy theories. she described herself as "q—adjacent". just didn't know it at the time. and she said that a lot of the conspiracy theories that she believed in had a huge crossover with qanon. your destination is on the left. piano playing tarzan has come out the other side now, and she's trying to come to terms with how it happened. in those early days of covid becoming serious, like, the stuff that appeared on my news feed was pretty alternative. i follow so many people in wellness. that's sort of where i get my news, like, people sharing stories. stuff about bill gates putting microchips in vaccines — like, a lot of scary stuff about bill gates was coming to my news feed on the daily. then, the stories that started to reach me also started to fill me with such anxiety, oh, my gosh! and that summer, like, this was summer 2020, like, boy, that was a dark time and a dark place. and i spent a lot of time feeling like i was four feet outside of my body. what do you think it was about your life that made you susceptible to getting involved in this kind of...? well, i don't know how far back you want to go. but i was born into this group called the brethren — and it's a fundamentalist christian community with some very, just, like, really strict high control. and i was raised in that, i was given a set of beliefs that i wasn't allowed to question. and that's comfortable and familiar to me. wow! are you guys hungry? when tarzan was a teenager, her family left the brethren. but she says she replaced that belief system with another one centred around natural health and wellness. then, ideas rooted in qanon started to seep in. the conversation was often about, like, "they are doing this, they are doing that." and i've noticed, among people i'm close with, that there's now a major distrust of our prime minister and our premier, and a belief that they're being controlled. he's a puppet? he's a puppet, and he's answering to someone else. do they talk about the great awakening? oh, definitely! oh, yes! like, that also felt true to me for a while, that we were just going through, like, this was a really important moment in history where some people were waking up and others wouldn't. in the beginning, it sounded good. i was like, "great, ok, we're going to heaven. we're all waking up, this is great! and i will be i will definitely be one of the ones who's waking up because i am, like, so smart." but tarzan was starting to feel that she was being brainwashed, and she began to pull away. in retrospect, like, it was a great awakening. it was just not the great awakening that i thought it was going to be. a different kind of awakening. this reminds me of something that rachel the therapist had said. do you consider qanon a cult? it has most of the characteristics of a cult. the "us—versus—them" mentality. that people who don't believe the way we believe aren'tjust nonbelievers, but they're a threat. whenever there is this idea that there is an enemy that's added into any kind of philosophy or way of thinking, it actually breeds more aggression because then you act like you're at war. do you see any pattern in the kind of people that are getting involved in this? people who want things to remain the same, but also have kind of a general distrust. for some people i've been working with, they felt that they didn't measure up to other siblings in their family, and they were looking for something to make them feel special, even superior. where they somehow had the ticket to information that other people didn't have. there have been conspiracies. we have been lied to, we know that. we know that things have been uncovered years later that the government has done. and there have been mistakes made by big pharma. exactly right, exactly right. when you take it to an extreme, then you have a total abandonment of facts and evidence. that's when it gets dangerous. that's when it keeps you from being able to make really wise decisions. there are many influencers and grifters who spread the qanon conspiracy — and add in their own claims and theories along the way. many of them have been banned from mainstream social media. but they're gathered in vegas this weekend. you ready to see some patriots? let's get this show on the road, woman. we got some patriots in the house! my people! this is like the first opportunity where i don't have to bite my tongue or hold my lips. i can just speak. patriots, 0, baby! dude, yes! i'm just going to be very serious right now — anything happens in there, you stay close to me, and we're getting the bleep out of there. we don't want no problems. ok, so what are you expecting? i'm expecting a lot of really warm—hearted patriots all in one place, all for one purpose. and where we go one, we go all. we're all here, you know? i don't have a ticket, but... just going to wing it? yeah, i mean, like, i'm kind of like the qanon rapper right now. so i'd be surprised if they were like, you know, "don't let him into this." but who knows, they could look at me and be like, "fake news, get him out of here," so... watching nick get off, i wondered how quickly he could get pulled back into qanon again. we applied directly to the organiser, qanonjohn, for access to the event, but we were denied. ok, all right. you, too! i'd love to go in and talk to some of these people, but we're getting a pretty hostile vibe. i think that's qanonjohn coming out now to speak to us. orjust to stand there and make sure we don't get in. we caught up with nick not long after. nojoy? nojoy. so, i mean, you don't want to pay? i mean, $650 for this conference is, like, a lot of these people i know. this could be a way of keeping out the fake news media. you know, fake news isn't going to pay $650 to come and shoot something. so they may be like, if you're going to pay for this thing, you're probably a real supporter. that might be the reason why it's 650. well, we just got another message saying, "john said he unequivocally does not want the bbc at the event." wow. that's qanonjohn, the organiser. well, i mean, i can't fully blame him for that, you know what i mean? so instead, we paid the $20 to watch some of the conference online from nick's hotel room. where we go one, we go all! oh, my god, jim caviezel was there? freedom from sin... you're kidding me right now! from the slavery that sin makes out of all of us... the fact that he's talking about this stuff is just absolutely amazing, because of who he is. it's jim caviezel, he's a huge hollywood actor. a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny... "in defiance of tyranny." you've come to fight as free men. oh, i'm so kissed that we missed this, dude! you've come to fight as free men, and free men you are. oh, he's literally giving the speech from braveheart right now! will you fight? you're irish! this is based in scotland. same lingo! watching jim caviezel perform a scene from braveheart, i was just trying not to laugh. that's what this is about. but this meant a lot to nick. powerful. holy bleep. listen, if you guys told me that jim caviezel was going to give the speech from braveheart as emphatically as mel gibson gave it in 1995 — best picture... ..i would've been there, 650 would've been nothing. we would've definitely went to this. damn it, i wish i was there for that! and i'll be honest with you right now, in this moment, stephanie, i do believe wholeheartedly. because this man's right here, right now, saying that "we're going into the storm." he must know something that i don't know with his multimillions of dollars and his experience in hollywood. why do you think he was...? why not? he's been places i haven't been, he's met people i don't know. he's probably in contact with a lot of military people who know about this military operation. why would you think that? why would he be here? for the same reason that you would be there, if you were a famous actor and it would be useful for them to get you in as is a speaker. he's no longer going to be cast in any hollywood movies. people think he's absolutely insane. this energised nick, but i found it exhausting. all of the false claims, all of the misinformation. here was a glimpse into just how easily nick could get pulled back in. when people were listening, multimillions of people are listening to what i'm saying, i'm going to make sure i do my research. hold on, let me stop you... in the words of spock, "it's only logical". the sentencing of the shaman is moments away. and, like any good show, make sure you go to the bathroom before you stay seated. once down, it's tough to get up. time forjake to go home and brush his teeth in his own sink. morning, guys. i headed into the courthouse with albert. but there were no cameras allowed inside. an update on that - breaking news we told you aboutjust moments ago... jacob chansley, the self—proclaimed qanon shaman... ..has been sentenced. to 41 months in prison. he's going to now spend more than three years in prison. he was seen entering the senate chamber with a spear. he is, for obvious reasons, i one of the most notable faces of the capitol riot. that was fascinating. the jacob chansley we met in there — not the same jacob chauncy that attacked the capitol on january sixth. totally different person. he got up and spoke for at least 20 minutes to the judge, face—to—face. he spoke about his difficult childhood, his own mental health troubles, and how important his spiritual and shamanistic beliefs, and his belief in god are to him. he didn't speak about qanon at all. qanon was never mentioned by anyone in that courtroom, which was fascinating. good afternoon. thanks for talking to us today. my pleasure, lunchtime — i know you're all hungry, so let me take your questions and i'll be as concise as i can. mr chansley owned his responsibility. he sought to be accountable. he was — and has been — held accountable. i'm fun, but not that much fun. thank you all. it seemed like the judge was really receptive to his plea, he spoke to him for a long time about how remorseful he was. seems like thejudge took it on board. proof's in the pudding — and the pudding today didn't go down as well as i would've liked. there were a lot of elements injacob's story that i'd seen in other people wrapped up in qanon. he's intelligent, he questions things. but he's also vulnerable and searching for something. he was a loner, someone who was looking for a sense of community. i caught up with albert later that day to find out what role he thought qanon would play injacob's life now. were you surprised qanon wasn't mentioned at all during the trial? it shouldn't have been, because the evidence and the truth isjake had nothing to do with qanon. it was a label placed on him. he did reference 0, though, in some of his videos that he posted on his social media. there's no doubt that he believed in a lot of that ideology. he did. do you think he's left behind completely? well, the excitement that he has, knowing now the answer to his question, is so elevated... about his mental health. and all he wants is to start that process of being helped, and getting the help he needs. brilliant — thank you. yeah, it's just hard to know how much of it is spin. but i mean, thejudge was convinced, so... whatever albert says, i'm not sure the qanon is something that jacob can leave behind that easily. isn't it amazing, how many there are every day? yeah, every day. oh, yeah, like, what day are we on — this was only two days ago. and this is only one channel. tarzan and i are looking at a forum online where relatives of q believers talk about how the conspiracy has destroyed their families. i created a youtube channel to discuss recovery and de—radicalisation — i love that word, de—radicalisation, that feels good to me, makes me feel like, i feel soothing. it's so much work to be radical! like, just reading these, like, this is like a high level of emotional intensity. and i want to de—radicalise, that's what i'm doing. tarzan doesn't believe in the conspiracy any more, but a lot of those close to her still do. i have lost many family members. yeah, ifeel pretty fortunate, like, my family, we've been through a lot already. so we'll survive this, and we'll survive whatever is next. 0k, guys, come get your mac and cheese! ok, you good? i gotta make a salad now. i have dinner with my family every sunday — and have done so for many, many years. and we all contribute and we rotate houses — so it's probably my turn to host next time. so just making a salad. i'm a little nervous to mention this interview, because you're definitely mainstream media. and how do they feel about mainstream media? well, i think that mainstream media is not to be trusted. mainstream media is going along with the whole story, and mainstream media is all so controlled. how has it been since you've come out of this conspiracy world? how's it been, being around your family? now, i've come to a good place. where i'm like, i can just be me and i can, like, crack a joke. my hope is that i've come out of enough systems that i could recognise it next time i was getting pulled in by one. but i really don't know. it's hard for me to know which beliefs are mine, and which were just chosen for me. oh, well, we can get them back out at any time. but for now, we've got to clean up. in the closet! we'll put this aside, and we'll put it with the lego later. in many of my conversations, the spectre of january sixth was hanging in the background. could people like this do something so violent? the calm before the storm, it's like, you don't tell the enemy, we're probably gonna have to save ourselves. and they're going to push us too far. language like this comes up all the time in qanon groups. this is a movement working to convince people that we're at war. do you think people will take up arms? oh, i'm looking forward to that. that is our constitutional right. i would love a physical battle. i'd love a physical battle. where are you going to be fighting? leeds, or whatever. orthe un. the supposed un. yes, please. mainstream media, all complacent, but propaganda. the news media was and they admitted it. they admitted it has never changed. that's us. so, yeah, again, i don't honey, you just work for him. and you're young. you're young. i'm 56 years old. you're baby. so it's not your fault. i call you an innocent and your baby, too. i will be there to defend you. well, yeah, they know a lot of stuff that's going on. i am feeling a little overwhelmed by everything the chemistjust told me. and some of the stuff she was saying there about wanting to go to war and wanting to take up arms, and being ready to fight in the streets — it's just a bit scary. and it reminded me of something that barbara, in kentucky, had said on the phone. that women were arming themselves like never before. while we were in la, we had a disturbing message from tarzan in canada. something had happened at dinner. phone ringing. hey. what are you munching on? i mean, for me, safety is nothing, i never really feel safe just because of how chaotic my life has always been. i come from a very poor family. at one point i was completely homeless, and i made it out. you know, there's safety and kind of a warmth knowing that you're like, we were talking about around people with like—minded ideas for anybody. i think that that's comforting and that makes you feel like a brotherhood. there's this idea of a sunk—cost fallacy. you can feel like you can't go back, that, you know, you can't save face or you've already put so much into it. did you see that, or did you feel that?
