restarted. a hockey fan who spotted a cancerous mole on the neck of the opposing team's manager from the stands is being awarded a scholarship to medical school, in thanks for her life—saving intervention. hello. a legal settlement signed between virginia roberts giuffre and sex offenderjeffrey epstein 12 years ago has been made public. the papers show ms giuffre was paid half a million dollars in exchange for committing not to sue anyone connected to epstein. lawyers for prince andrew say the document releases the prince from liability in the civil case brought by virginia giuffre, who accuses him of sexually assaulting her when she was 17. prince andrew has consistently denied the claims. a court hearing will take place in new york tomorrow to discuss whether that case should proceed. our legal correspondent, dominic casciani, reports. a woman seeking her day in court. the unprecedented defendant a prince of the realm. have his lawyer found a way to stop virginia giuffre*s case from ever being heard? she said she was assaulted by the man on the right. miss giuffre says epstein and his girlfriend coerced a teenager into abused by prince andrew. the release of a settlement in which miss giuffre accepted half $1 million to end her case against epstein. that deal has been made public because of its potential importance to prince andrew's defence. in the settlement, virginia giuffre agreed to... the wording goes on to cover any other person who could have been a potential defendant. it so white she promises not to bring any further case dating from the beginning of the world! it's so wide. from the beginning of the world! it's so wide-— it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre _ it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre pieces _ it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre pieces of - it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre pieces of a - it's so wide. this is one of the - most bizarre pieces of a settlement agreement i have ever seen. ijust cannot believe that a court would say anyone who has wronged virginia, who was associated with epstein, is now released from liability. that would fly in the face of what our laws are not trying to do, which is open up claims for sexual abuse victims, allow them to come forward, even years later, and bring perpetrators to justice. the even years later, and bring perpetrators to justice. perpetrators to 'ustice. the duke's osition perpetrators to justice. the duke's position remains _ perpetrators to justice. the duke's position remains unchanged - perpetrators to justice. the duke's position remains unchanged since | perpetrators to justice. the duke's i position remains unchanged since his november 2019 newsnight interview. you can say categorically that you don't _ you can say categorically that you don't recall— you can say categorically that you don't recall meeting virginia roberts, _ don't recall meeting virginia roberts, dining with her, dancing with her— roberts, dining with her, dancing with her or— roberts, dining with her, dancing with her or going on to have sex with_ with her or going on to have sex with her— with her or going on to have sex with her in— with her or going on to have sex with her in a _ with her or going on to have sex with her in a bedroom in the house? yes _ with her in a bedroom in the house? yes i_ with her in a bedroom in the house? yes i can _ with her in a bedroom in the house? yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you _ yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it — yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never— yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened - yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened at. - yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened at. del tell you it never happened at. do ou tell you it never happened at. you recall any kind of sexual contact _ you recall any kind of sexual contact with virginia roberts, then or any— contact with virginia roberts, then or any other contact with virginia roberts, then orany othertime? contact with virginia roberts, then or any other time?— contact with virginia roberts, then or any other time? none whatsoever. " there will be focused on the global audience tomorrow. the uk prime minister, borisjohnson, says there is no reason for further coronavirus measures in england, despite the surge of coronavirus cases caused by the omicron variant. the government insists it's determined to keep schools open. speaking at a vaccination centre, mrjohnson said current measures — including mask—wearing in secondary schools, working from home where possible, and covid passes for some venues — are enough for now. 157,758 new coronavirus cases were recorded in england and scotland in the past 2a hours. 20,217 of those were in scotland, a record daily figure. data for wales and northern ireland won't come until after the new year holiday. in france, children aged six and over are required to wear facemasks on public transport, shops and in other venues. in the netherlands, the government has announced that schools will reopen next week, despite cases remaining high in india, vaccinations have opened to 15 to 18—year—olds, but the country has recorded its steepest weekly surge in infections — almost tripling, with 130,000 new cases registered. in the us, schools are reopening this week amid a surge in the 0micron variant. dr paul 0ffit is director of the vaccine education center at the children's hospital of philadelphia and a physician of infectious diseases. he explained the current situation where he is. we're opening schools this week in philadelphia. what we do at our hospital is when we admit children, we always test and see whether they have covid i wind of whether or not they're getting admitted. somewhat of an increase into our hospital because of covid and into the icu because of covid, it's hard to watch. 0micron is sometimes immune evasive, meaning... we see in a lot of cases but not a proportionately high increase in serious cases, so there is a disassociation in that regard. to what extent are children at the moment able to go to school this week? are there quite switched requirements from school boards about testing —— strict requirements? about testing -- strict requirements?- about testing -- strict reauirements? ~ * ., , about testing -- strict reauirements? * ,. requirements? we're opening schools this week in philadelphia. _ there's no attempt to quarantine children away from school and do distance learning. we want to have on—site learning. we're trying to do everything we can, which is to say make sure the teachers are vaccinated, do everything we can to make sure that those over five years of age are vaccinated, those over 12 are vaccinated, and to have mask—wearing. i do think this is going to be an issue for the next 4—6 weeks, and then i think things will settle down. if we can get through the next to six weeks, we want kids to be in school. we think distance learning is a contradiction in terms. it's the only decent meal they get during the day, child abuse has picked up in the school system. we need kids to go to school. philly is a huge urban conurbation, and there are presumably hundreds of schools, all of which have to think about protecting their other staff, like janitors as well as teachers and so on. in terms of the impact you think this has had, you're a physician of children, so you interact with children and parents all the time. how tough is the last year and a half been for kids in the city? it's been tough, especially tougher recently. i was on service and i'm seeing these children come into the hospital, and i would say most of the children we see are over five years of age. what they all have in common, whether they're admitted to the hospital or the icu, is that none of them are vaccinated. their parents are not, the siblings are not vaccinated, and virtually all of them could be vaccinated. a year ago, when we didn't have a vaccine for that age group, it was hard enough. now, when you know there's all this suffering and hospitalisation and icu admissions, and rare fatalities can be avoided, it's even harder. it's heartbreaking. do you ever lose your temper with parents over this? no, but it's really hard not to. when you watch these parents watching their child gets sedated, have a tube put down their throat, brought into the icu, where they're then put on a ventilator and then you watch the parents crying, you just want to shake them. this was all avoidable, and they made that choice to put not only themselves at risk, but those they came into contact with. your number one job as a parent is to keep your child is safe as possible. that's what vaccines do. and these parents made the choice not to do that. they took an unnecessary risk for themselves and their children. several french mps say they have received death threats as they debate a covid—19 pass that would bar the unvaccinated from much of public life. known as the "vaccine pass", the bill is aimed at getting france's remaining 5 million unvaccinated people over the age of 12 to accept a dose. 0ur correspondent hugh schofield has more from paris. six months ago, macron, in the first phase of this, instituted the health pass, as it was called, which was a way of encouraging people to get vaccinated. it was the requirement to have a document on your phone or whatever which said you'd been vaccinated or had had a negative test recently in order to get access to all these things in public life. there was no huge uprising, people accepted it, and now he's pushing a little bit further, as you say. the result of that was a huge uptake in vaccination, and now, six months on, he wants to mop up the rest. there is this recalcitrant 5 million or so over 12 who are not taking it, that's about 5% of the population, and by turning the health pass into a vaccination pass — in other words, making it compulsory now to be vaccinated to get into these services — you're no longer going to be able to get in with just a negative test, that is going to put the pressure on. of course, the pressure is already on because the evidence is mounting more and more and more on those who are hesitant that, by being hesitant, they're exposing themselves to greater dangers and dangers which the rest of the population is not. so, he's pushing at a much more open or flexible door now, i would say, but there are in the country people who, as in other countries, arejust viscerally opposed to vaccination. and i guess there are some who will never change, but he thinks there are some who will change. that was our colleague in france, you schofield. the five permanent members of the un security council have issued a rare joint statement pledging to prevent the spread of atomic weapons and ensure a nuclear war is neverfought. china, france, russia, the uk and the us will be part of a major review of a key nuclear treaty later this year. firefighters in south africa say a blaze that devastated the houses of parliament in cape town on sunday has restarted after previously reporting that the flames had been brought under control. the bbc*s southern africa correspondent, nomsa maseko, reports. 2a hours after a blaze tore through south africa's parliament, firefighters are still putting out hotspots. the damage is said to be extensive. the roof of the national assembly, which is the main debating chamber, collapsed and the room was gutted. a team of experts is combing through the scene. we can confirm that one of the biggest losses that the people of south africa have suffered in this fire is the complete burning down of the national assembly chamber, a set of crucial plenary settings of the national assembly and joint sittings of the two houses, the national assembly and the national council of provinces. historical and venerable artefacts survived the fire. before today, they could not gain access to the fire scene. the temperature inside of the building is still 100 celsius, down from what it was yesterday, at over 400 celsius. but what they've done in the meantime is to use a drone that they are putting inside the building to assist the structure of the building. a suspect who was arrested yesterday is due to appear in court tomorrow. the south african government has said if it is found that his actions were deliberate, then the fire he allegedly started will be seen as a direct attack on the state. nomsa maseko, bbc news, cape town. a woman who alerted a canadian hockey manager to a cancerous mole on the back of his neck has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship after a social media hunt by vancouver canucks managed to track her down. assistant equipment manager brian "red" hamilton was in the middle of moving equipment during a game in seattle in october when he noticed nadia popovic behind the bench pressing her phone against the plexiglass. the message read, "the mole on the back of your neck "is possibly cancerous. "please go see a doctor!" well, it turned out nadia was right. brian hamilton soon saw a doctor and had the mole removed. so, i caught up with nadia and brian a little earlier and began by asking how she first came to spot the mole. it was really just a split second that red happened to walk in front of me and reach over to pass something to his co—worker, and when he did that, his jacket kind of fell a little bit behind his neck and he happened to be right in my point of view, in my eyes immediately drew to this mole on the back of his neck. so, i leaned in very close to the plexiglas and i saw that it had an irregular border, he was raised in discolored and i knew those with a little bit of a medical background that those were possibly indicators of a skin cancer. 50. that those were possibly indicators of a skin cancer.— of a skin cancer. so, you kind of -e a of a skin cancer. so, you kind of type a message _ of a skin cancer. so, you kind of type a message on _ of a skin cancer. so, you kind of type a message on your- of a skin cancer. so, you kind of type a message on your phone | of a skin cancer. so, you kind of i type a message on your phone and pressed it. was it difficult to attract brian's attention? even presidents cannot escape the fighting force of winter in washington, dc. this is air force one. it landed back at andrews airforce base, as a snowstorm brings the us capital to a standstill. even the truck transporting the stairs had to be manually pushed by airport staff as they struggled through the biting wind. the turbulent winter weather left the president stuck on the tarmac for 30 minutes. but at least they managed to land. if you are enjoying that chilly weather on the east coast, you have our sympathies. weather on the east coast, you have oursympathies. don't weather on the east coast, you have our sympathies. don't try flying in these conditions. stay with us on bbc news. hello there. colder weather has arrived in scotland. we've seen some snow across northern areas today, but that colder air is pushing its way southwards. now, a real turnaround in fortunes when you think about saturday's temperatures and how they were up at around 15 or 16 degrees, including in the highlands of scotland. well, tomorrow's temperatures more typically around 4 or 5 celsius. it is going to feel a lot colder. now, the colder air is going to be arriving on these northerly winds, and those winds push the cold air right the way into the south. however, this is our cold front. and ahead of it, overnight, we'll stilljust be about into the milder air across the far south of england and wales, so temperatures, cardiff and london, about 6 or 7 degrees. 0therwise, further north, frost pretty widespread and there's a risk of icy stretches in scotland, where we'll continue to see frequent snow showers with some significant accumulations building up. could be some localised disruption. and for 0rkney, some very strong winds towards the middle part of the day. gusts could reach 70, maybe 80 mph. now, there will be some very heavy snow across the higher scottish mountains. the next couple of days could bring 15 cm or so. and there will be frequent showers coming down the irish sea coasts, so northern ireland, the northwest of both england and wales, the northwest midlands seeing showers, and there'll also be plenty of showers coming down the north sea coasts. however, into wednesday, the winds change direction a little bit and should keep most of the showers away from the east coast. there will be lots of sunshine, cold and frosty, still snow showers affecting scotland and still that line of showers affecting northern ireland, the northwest of england and wales, the northwest midlands too. still chilly, temperatures at best around 5 or 6 degrees for many. now, into thursday's forecast. into that cold air moves these weather fronts. now, it's going to be quite an awkward kind of day for forecasting exactly how much snow there might be, because between these fronts, there's actually a zone of slightly less cold air — cold, mild, cold. so, what will probably happen is that we'll probably start off with some snow falling on the leading edge of this system. and the snow might stick around for a while, actually, across east scotland to the east of the pennines as well. could be some disruption. but as that less cold air moves in, the snow should become confined to high ground, particularly scotland and the pennines. nevertheless, there could be a few issues. eventually, though, many of us at lower elevations will see rain, temperatures around 6 or 7. hello, i'm shaun ley. you're watching bbc news. here are the latest headlines. a legal document which prince andrew's lawyer believes will stop a civil case against him in the us has been made public. the duke of york has consistenly denied sexually assaulting virginia giuffre when she was 17. the uk prime minister says there is no reason forfurther measures in england despite a surge of cases due to the 0micron variant. a fire that devastated the houses of parliament in cape town on sunday has reignited. firefighters are back at the scene, trying to put out the blaze which is now burning through the roof. a blizzard has swept across the east coast of the us, causing a delay to president biden as he returned to washington on air force one. the icy conditions meant he was unable to get off the plane for half an hour.

restarted. a hockey fan who spotted a cancerous mole on the neck of the opposing team's manager from the stands is being awarded a scholarship to medical school, in thanks for her life—saving intervention. hello. a legal settlement signed between virginia roberts giuffre and sex offenderjeffrey epstein 12 years ago has been made public. the papers show ms giuffre was paid half a million dollars in exchange for committing not to sue anyone connected to epstein. lawyers for prince andrew say the document releases the prince from liability in the civil case brought by virginia giuffre, who accuses him of sexually assaulting her when she was 17. prince andrew has consistently denied the claims. a court hearing will take place in new york tomorrow to discuss whether that case should proceed. our legal correspondent, dominic casciani, reports. a woman seeking her day in court. the unprecedented defendant a prince of the realm. have his lawyer found a way to stop virginia giuffre*s case from ever being heard? she said she was assaulted by the man on the right. miss giuffre says epstein and his girlfriend coerced a teenager into abused by prince andrew. the release of a settlement in which miss giuffre accepted half $1 million to end her case against epstein. that deal has been made public because of its potential importance to prince andrew's defence. in the settlement, virginia giuffre agreed to... the wording goes on to cover any other person who could have been a potential defendant. it so white she promises not to bring any further case dating from the beginning of the world! it's so wide. from the beginning of the world! it's so wide-— it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre _ it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre pieces _ it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre pieces of - it's so wide. this is one of the most bizarre pieces of a - it's so wide. this is one of the - most bizarre pieces of a settlement agreement i have ever seen. ijust cannot believe that a court would say anyone who has wronged virginia, who was associated with epstein, is now released from liability. that would fly in the face of what our laws are not trying to do, which is open up claims for sexual abuse victims, allow them to come forward, even years later, and bring perpetrators to justice. the even years later, and bring perpetrators to justice. perpetrators to 'ustice. the duke's osition perpetrators to justice. the duke's position remains _ perpetrators to justice. the duke's position remains unchanged - perpetrators to justice. the duke's position remains unchanged since | perpetrators to justice. the duke's i position remains unchanged since his november 2019 newsnight interview. you can say categorically that you don't _ you can say categorically that you don't recall— you can say categorically that you don't recall meeting virginia roberts, _ don't recall meeting virginia roberts, dining with her, dancing with her— roberts, dining with her, dancing with her or— roberts, dining with her, dancing with her or going on to have sex with_ with her or going on to have sex with her— with her or going on to have sex with her in— with her or going on to have sex with her in a _ with her or going on to have sex with her in a bedroom in the house? yes _ with her in a bedroom in the house? yes i_ with her in a bedroom in the house? yes i can _ with her in a bedroom in the house? yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you _ yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it — yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never— yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened - yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened at. - yes. i can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened at. del tell you it never happened at. do ou tell you it never happened at. you recall any kind of sexual contact _ you recall any kind of sexual contact with virginia roberts, then or any— contact with virginia roberts, then or any other contact with virginia roberts, then orany othertime? contact with virginia roberts, then or any other time?— contact with virginia roberts, then or any other time? none whatsoever.
