sporting couple, with 12 gold medals between them. the funeral of archbishop desmond tutu will be held later this morning. we'll be live in cape town. official celebrations were either muted or cancelled, but there were still fireworks to welcome in 2022 on the warmest new year's eve on record. good morning. it was an exceptionally mild and to 2021. the weather continues in that vein for the start of 2022, but how long will it last? i will have more details for you on the weather forecast in around 15 minutes. good morning and happy new year. it is ijanuary 2022. here is our top story: the medical chiefs leading the uk's battle against coronavirus have been recognised in the new year honours list, while the queen has knighted former prime minister tony blair. athletes, actors, a spice girl and an 11—year—old boy are also among those who have been honoured, as lizo mzimba reports. their faces have become familiar to the public throughout the pandemic. now the chief medical officers for england, chris whitty. .. if lots of people are vaccinated, that reduces risk of transmission in the community. ..for scotland, gregor smith, and for wales, frank atherton, have all been knighted. a knighthood too for england's deputy chief medical officer, jonathan van—tam. # wheels on fire... in the entertainment world, joanna lumley says she is stunned to be made a dame... patsy stone — 47. ..both for her acting career... i'll sue! ..and for her campaigning work. when i saw that sentence saying dbe, i burst into tears. it was the most extraordinary shock. it was such a shock, i put my head in my hands and sobbed like a baby. then i thought, "how has this happened?" "is it a mistake?" i truly was thrown by it, but i am thrilled to bits. award—winning actress vanessa redgrave says she is surprised and grateful to also become a dame for services to drama. broadcaster trevor phillips has been knighted in recognition of his decades—long work on equality and human rights. james bond actor daniel craig has been made a cmg, the same honour held by the fictional spy, consumer champion martin lewis becomes a cbe for his work on consumer rights, particularly during the pandemic. i never thought they'd give a cbe to somebody like me, so it's very gratifying to get it. and especially after the couple of years we've had, when myself and my team have put so much work into trying to help people get through the pandemic financially. goodbye, old friend. two of our best—known soap stars, william roache and june brown, have both become 0bes for services to drama and charity. hello, jim. it's me, dorothy. spice girl mel b, a patron of women's aid, has been made an mbe for her work highlighting abusive behaviour. as the world watched on, another black life gone. and diversity star ashley banjo says he is humbled and proud to become an mbe for services to dance. black lives matter. lizo mzimba, bbc news. let's talk more about the new year honours list with our political correspondent chris mason. chris, happy new year. tony blair becomes sir tony from today. why has it taken so long to get to that? hgppy it taken so long to get to that? happy new year, so yes, anthony charles linton blair, although he will insist on being called sir tony rather than going for anthony. it is a good question why it has taken this long and the particular nature of the award tony blair has been offered because it is separate from the new year's honours. it is a personal gift from the queen. he becomes a knight companion of the most noble order of the garter. 0nly most noble order of the garter. only 24 most noble order of the garter. 0nly 2a people hold that rank at any one time. sojohn major, anotherform of a minister, is also in that same ranking. despite being a very long serving british prime minister, the controversy around him may be a contributing factor although it was a while before sojohn major rose to that rank after his time as prime minister. also on that list, baroness amos, former cabinet minister, becomes the first recipient of this particular honour since it was first founded in 1348 and the time of edward iii*s brain. the way it all works is that this particular collection of distinguished people gather at windsor castle every year and is part of their tasks, assuming this particular role, they take part in an annual procession with velvet robes and plumed hats. that is something for baroness amos and so tony blair to look forward to in 2022. ., , ,., ., tony blair to look forward to in 2022. ., , ., 2022. that is something to look forward to _ 2022. that is something to look forward to for— 2022. that is something to look forward to for the _ 2022. that is something to look forward to for the former - 2022. that is something to look forward to for the former prime | forward to for the former prime minister, but what about our current prime minister? if we look at what borisjohnson has ahead of him in the year to come, another year where he has yet more challenges when it comes to getting a handle on the coronavirus crisis.— comes to getting a handle on the coronavirus crisis. here we are yet arain, coronavirus crisis. here we are yet again. we — coronavirus crisis. here we are yet again. we were — coronavirus crisis. here we are yet again, we were having _ coronavirus crisis. here we are yet again, we were having this - coronavirus crisis. here we are yet again, we were having this exact l again, we were having this exact conversation 12 months ago, he would have shouted that we are having the conversation 12 months on but covid dominates the national and international landscape, and therefore the political landscape here for boris johnson, therefore the political landscape here for borisjohnson, emphasising as he does the importance of people getting boosters. 0bviously that fear that it could continue to inflict pain economically, in health terms, in social terms as well. quite strikingly this morning, sajid javid, the health secretary, saying additional restrictions in england would be an absolute last resort. that is a restating of what the government in england has been saying for some time, but it is striking he is saying it again, that ahead of the review on wednesday it will look at the data, which looks pretty bleak in terms of case numbers, before the government here at westminster decides what it will do for england, with more significant restrictions already in place elsewhere in the uk. chris, thank you- _ place elsewhere in the uk. chris, thank you. good _ place elsewhere in the uk. chris, thank you. good to _ place elsewhere in the uk. chris, thank you. good to talk- place elsewhere in the uk. chris, thank you. good to talk to - place elsewhere in the uk. chris, thank you. good to talk to you. l the state funeral of anti—apartheid campaigner archbishop desmond tutu will take place in cape town this morning. the nobel peace prize winner died last sunday at the age of 90. over the past two days, thousands of people have waited in line to pay their final respects, as our south africa correspondent nomsa maseko reports. the clergy, anglican church wardens and a marching band lining the streets as a guard of honour for archbishop desmond tutu. the outspoken priest who became one of the world's great moral voices lying in state for a second day in a plain pinewood coffin, in accordance with his wishes. thousands of people have been flocking to st george's cathedral to pay their last respects. one man hitch—hiked for more than 1,000 kilometres just for this moment. it's a memory that i will live for, for the rest of my life. and ijust hope, as he said in his words — he said, "south africa, you must be careful. "if you don't live according to those values, you might bite the dust." archbishop tutu campaigned against white minority rule and worked hard to unite a deeply divided nation. laughs. *the arch,* as he was known fondly, was also a family man. my parents' relationship was strong and loving. they talked about loving each other. they talked about — you know, "oh, ithink you're so handsome, or i think you're so beautiful, you're so gorgeous, you smell delicious. no, he didn't say "delicious", he'd say, "0oh, you smell expensive!" the globally revered anti—apartheid icon*s send—off will be held at the cathedral he called home for many years, to the sounds and hymns he chose ahead of his funeral. nomsa maseko, bbc news. we will go to that later and bring you images from that funeral. new year celebrations have been taking place across the uk, but plans were scaled back due to the rise in cases of the 0micron variant. in london there was no party in trafalgar square, and edinburgh's hogmanay event was cancelled. danjohnson has been taking a look at how the festivities played out. big ben chimes. after another difficult year, _ big ben chimes. after another difficult year, it _ big ben chimes. after another difficult year, it wasn't - from usual? they are completely different. there is a feeling of. different. there is a feeling of hopelessness but there is a feeling of grim reality as well. one of the people i spoke to who is from britain said that this will be the new year's eve i will always remember, when i came to times square and i will tell my children how i wore a mask to celebrate. 0nly how i wore a mask to celebrate. only two times in history when the ball did not drop, two years during the world wars when the us government did not want to light up times square. franks nitrous same, kennedy —— confetti flew, it had a feeling of festivity but when other streets are clear and they will clean them up are clear and they will clean them up and another thing interesting and not very good is that many of the police officers tonight who are on duty were already on overtime because about 20% of the police force here, the nypd, is homesick with covid. and new york as a whole, i know you mentioned that sense of hopelessness earlier but what is the sense of how new york is going through this latest covid wave and a sense of getting out of it and emerging on the other side and things being slightly better than they were this time last year? full disclosure, new york is my hometown so when the pandemic swept through so when the pandemic swept through so quickly and it was the epicentre and we saw those sirens and ambulances racing through streets, field hospitals and kept going. so many people i knew were so affected and many people here in the city was affected. the city was under curfew. the city that never sleeps was under curfew and shut down. it was completely different. coming in here yesterday, times square was alive and people were still flooding the streets, they were returning to new york. not necessarily in the numbers before, not the throngs of people that you see here, the 60,000 some odd people who come to times square every year but people did travel despite the travel delays, despite 0micron and the vaccination rates are increasing, including the boosters, testing sites are getting better and people are bracing themselves, just like other parts of themselves, just like other parts of the world, here in the city it was a difficult christmas and 0micron swept through but itjust spiked, the rate spiked everywhere. but people are resigned and, i would say, mildly hopeful, fingers crossed. . ~ say, mildly hopeful, fingers crossed. ., ,, , ., say, mildly hopeful, fingers crossed. . ~' ., , crossed. thank you, courtney. i thinkthat _ crossed. thank you, courtney. i think that is — crossed. thank you, courtney. i think that is the _ crossed. thank you, courtney. i think that is the sense - hogmanay event was cancelled. danjohnson has been taking a look at how the festivities played out. big ben chimes. after another difficult year, it wasn't even clear there would be fireworks. but london didn't disappoint, welcoming 2022. the message was stay at home and watch on tv, even though there were no official restrictions. it was much quieter than normal, but there were still some crowds. it's new year's eve. want to have a good time, have a little celebration, see in the new year. even though the advice was stay at home? stay at home — we've got our vaxxes, we've got our boosters, we've done our things, we've followed the guidance. new year's eve is funny one this year, because we want to stay safe. but also, in 15 years of living here, i've never been and done the london fireworks. boris had a cheese—and—wine party, so why can't i come and see the fireworks? 2021 has been a bit of a — a bit horrendous, but it is what it is. we're still alive. 2022 better be better. restrictions are tougher in other parts of the uk, and the streets of cardiff were quiet early on new year's eve. this bar was able to celebrate at midnight, but there is frustration across the hospitality industry about the lack of support and the different restrictions. i know at least 70% to 80% of the people that i am associates with have crossed the borders to go and celebrate new year's eve, because they're confident this is going to be their last night out before we go back into some kind of lockdown, whether that be a firebreak or a full lockdown. so they're taking advantage of it and making the most of their night and their new year. # should auld acquaintance be forgot... scotland's main hogmanay celebrations were cancelled, with nightclubs closed. but not everyone and if you are just waking up, happy new year. we have helen here with the weather for the morning. helen. hello there and good morning. good morning and happy new year. it was an exceptionally mild and to 2021. showing you the record for new year's day, 15.6, a long—standing record, since 1916 but it looks as if that will be pip today. 15.8 yesterday and the reason is because we have these warm winds coming off the atlantic from down towards the tropics. that wind direction will change slightly over the next couple of days but for today we are in the same feed of air with weather fronts and a narrow band of rain but low pressure still with us. that is all tightening back to isobars meaning it is windy out there today despite being mild. this is the band of rain that i think we will see crossing to scotland but also england and wales, the western areas this morning, eastern areas this afternoon. a narrow band so no more than an hour orso narrow band so no more than an hour or so of rain for the but most of us but the odd run by the thunder and there will be quite a lot of dry and sunny weather as well. we've not seen a lot of sunshine in the last week or two, have we? there was a glimpse yesterday but with the south—westerly wind, 50, 16 on the cards today and windier for scotland and northern ireland with girls around coasts and hills here today. windier than yesterday. overnight tonight one band of rain clears to give another one from the west and we keep that wind direction, the south—westerly again mild night for most of us as it was last night and we are already starting the day this morning on 10th and 11th and we will do once again tomorrow for the second of the weekend. and that will clear the rain away quite quickly and that we have some good spells of sunshine through the afternoon more rain arrives from the south and west across england and wales, showers further north. interspersed with sunshine butjust a subtle change, more of a westerly wind tomorrow so we are down to 10— 14s, nudging down again on those temperatures as we go through the second of the weekend and we will notice the change through monday and tuesday. we still have low pressure and weather fronts coming from both north and the south so on monday we could see rain creeping into southern counties, unsure of the timings. this one coming down from the north introduces the colder air so we will see temperatures start to dip away again, more notably by the end of monday but definitely i tuesday. 8-12 monday but definitely i tuesday. 8—12 on monday, by the time we get to tuesday this band of rain pushes into the south and we have the cold air coming in behind it. arctic air blasts. having started with some exceptionally mild weather we could be a little bit below average by the time we get to tuesday. that is a wild way for now. you can see that the cold air they're coming in on tuesday for most parts does not last because we get back to the atlantic feed but we are not alone with it. exceptional warmth at the moment and it is very warm indeed with record and broken across other parts of europe at the moment. as i say it is a rebalance by the time we get to tuesday with cold air getting in. but for your new year's walk today if you are getting out and about, aware that it is windy but it should stay mild. weirdly mild. just one little bit of sunshine on that out lock. the tokyo olympics was one of the highlights of last summer, it does seem a long time ago. no surprise that some of team gbs bigger stars have been recognised today in the new year's but city are eight points clear at the top of the table. pep guardiola thinks it'll be closer this time. i know exactly, whether we play with mikel or without mikel the team that arrived as the best arsenal i have ever seen and it is already six seasons, and that is why we are going to play whether there are people supporting, it is a challenge for us. but we face them with an incredible allowing certain sections of home and away fans to stand throughout games, beginning when chelsea host liverpool tomorrow. so how will the new standing areas work? well, all the grounds that have been chosen to host the pilots have either got areas of rail sitting like this, where the barriers are incorporated into the seats, or independent rails, which are designed to mitigate the risk of crowd collapse. it will be one standing space per seat and there will be extra cctv and stewarding to monitor crowd behaviour. the government's ambition is to change legislation and rollout standing areas sporting couple, with 12 gold medals between them. the funeral of archbishop desmond tutu will be held later this morning. we'll be live in cape town. official celebrations were either muted or cancelled, but there were still fireworks to welcome in 2022 on the warmest new year's eve on record. good morning. it was an exceptionally mild and to 2021. the weather continues in that vein for the start of 2022, but how long will it last? i will have more details for you on the weather forecast in around 15 minutes. good morning and happy new year. it is ijanuary 2022. here is our top story: the medical chiefs leading the uk's battle against coronavirus have been recognised in the new year honours list, while the queen has knighted former prime minister tony blair. athletes, actors, a spice girl and an 11—year—old boy are also among those who have been honoured, as lizo mzimba reports. their faces have become familiar to the public throughout the pandemic. now the chief medical officers for england, chris whitty. .. if lots of people are vaccinated, that reduces risk of transmission in the community. ..for scotland, gregor smith, and for wales, frank atherton, have all been knighted. a knighthood too for england's deputy chief medical officer, jonathan van—tam. 0nly how i wore a mask to celebrate. only two times in history when the ball did not drop, two years during the world wars when the us government did not want to light up times square. franks nitrous same, kennedy —— confetti flew, it had a feeling of festivity but when other streets are clear and they will clean them up are clear and they will clean them up and another thing interesting and not very good is that many of the police officers tonight who are on duty were already on overtime because about 20% of the police force here, the nypd, is homesick with covid. and new york as a whole, i know you mentioned that sense of hopelessness earlier but what is the sense of how new york is going through this latest covid wave and a sense of getting out of it and emerging on the other side and things being slightly better than they were this time last year? full disclosure, new york is my hometown so when the pandemic swept through so when the pandemic swept through so quickly and it was the epicentre and we saw those sirens and ambulances racing through streets, field hospitals and kept going. so many people i knew were so affected and many people here in the city was affected. the city was under curfew. the city that never sleeps was under curfew and shut down. it was completely different. coming in here yesterday, times square was alive and people were still flooding the streets, they were returning to new york. not necessarily in the numbers before, not the throngs of people that you see here, the 60,000 some odd people who come to times square every year but people did travel despite the travel delays, despite 0micron and the vaccination rates are increasing, including the boosters, testing sites are getting better and people are bracing themselves, just like other parts of themselves, just like other parts of the world, here in the city it was a difficult christmas and 0micron swept through but itjust spiked, the rate spiked everywhere. but people are resigned and, i would say, mildly hopeful, fingers crossed. . ~ say, mildly hopeful, fingers crossed. ., ,, , ., say, mildly hopeful, fingers crossed. . ~' ., , crossed. thank you, courtney. i thinkthat _ crossed. thank you, courtney. i think that is — crossed. thank you, courtney. i think that is the _ crossed. thank you, courtney. i think that is the sense - and to 2021. showing you the record for new year's day, 15.6, a long—standing record, since 1916 but it looks as if that will be pip today. 8—12 on monday, by the time we get to tuesday this band of rain pushes into the south and we have the cold air coming in behind it. arctic air blasts. having started with some exceptionally mild weather we could be a little bit below average by the time we get to tuesday. that is a wild way for now. you can see that the cold air they're coming in on tuesday for most parts does not last because we get back to the atlantic feed but we are not alone with it. exceptional warmth at the moment and it is very warm indeed with record and broken across other parts of europe at the moment. as i say it is a rebalance by the time we get to tuesday with cold air getting in. but for your new year's walk today if you are getting out and about, aware that it is windy but it should stay mild. weirdly mild. just one little bit of sunshine on that out lock. the tokyo olympics was one of the highlights of last summer, it does seem a long time ago. no surprise that some of team gbs bigger stars have been recognised today in the new year's year to year. it is exceptionally mild. it was exceptionally mild to end 2021 and we will keep this extent of really mild weather for today and into tomorrow a little bit as well, but temperatures do tend to ease away a little bit over the coming few days. the change is all to do with the wind direction. it is a south—westerly coming all the way from the tropics, the far south of us, notjust across the south but across much of europe as well. but we have low pressure with us, so it does mean that it is a windy day. tightly packed isobars and we have some rain around. not a great deal. this rain is pulling away from scotland through this morning and thenit scotland through this morning and then it is bands of showers. quite a narrow band, but there could be some quite heavy bursts of rain on that as it moves through. probably for just an hourfor as it moves through. probably for just an hour for most of us, but we will see some sunshine to the east of that and some sunshine following on behind. stronger winds today, though, notably for scotland and northern ireland. gale force around the hills and the coasts. showers coming in behind but a good deal of fine and dry weather. it is all about the temperatures. 12 to 14 starting the day, picking up to between 14 to 16, possibly 17. the record for new year's day is 15.6, and that stands for over a century, actually, set back in 1916. mild and windy and with more rain through the coming night as well, so no sign of a frost. these are more like daytime averages. the overnight temperatures, another mild day as we go into tomorrow. probably not quite as mild as today. the rain whisks away and we have some sunshine if you are out for an early morning walk. we have rain coming across england and wales for a time, showers coming into scotland. a brisk wind for here and for northern ireland, temperatures ten to 14, not quite as high, slightly switching our wind direction to more of a south—westerly and south south—westerly, even more of a westerly by the end of tomorrow. as westerly by the end of tomorrow. as we go into monday we start to see a subtle change with winds coming down from the north. so we will get something colder by the end of monday. i will tell you something colder by the end of monday. iwill tell you more something colder by the end of monday. i will tell you more later. thank you very much indeed. it looks like the kind of day where if you are going out for a new year's day walk to blow out some of the cobwebs, you will not need a coat. it was so mild walking into work this morning. it was so mild walking into work this morning-— it was so mild walking into work this morning. number of days you come out on _ this morning. number of days you come out on new— this morning. number of days you come out on new year's - this morning. number of days you come out on new year's day i this morning. number of days you come out on new year's day and l this morning. number of days you i come out on new year's day and get rained on. it will be nice to have a nice mild day. pare rained on. it will be nice to have a nice mild day-— nice mild day. are very different feel this time.
