and staff sickness causes disruption on the railways. in her first christmas broadcast since the death of prince philip, the queen is expected to give a very personal address tomorrow. and coming up, i can't say my name — a revealing look at what it's like to live with a stammer. hello and welcome if you're watching in the uk or around the world. "a glimmer of christmas hope" may be on offer from new cononavirus data, suggesting that the omicron variant may be less likely to lead to serious illness than the delta variant. that's according to a uk senior health official. but drjenny harries from the uk health security agency warned it "definitely isn't yet at the point where we could downgrade the serious threat" of omicron and that more data is needed, particularly about the impact on elderly and more vulnerable patients. it comes as 200,000 first, second or booster appointments are being made available over the festive period across england as people are urged to getjabbed. in his christmas message, borisjohnson describes the jab as a "wonderful gift" that people can give to keep their families safe as omicron continues to spread rapidly across the country. but although record numbers of rapid lateral flow tests are being sent to people's homes every day, the uk health security agency acknowledges there are issues with deliveries to some pharmacies. the uk set another daily covid record yesterday with nearly 120,000 confirmed cases. here's our political correspondent, helen catt. the prime minister has said for a while that he believes this christmas would be better than last, and he said he won't flip the switch on any new restrictions in england before tomorrow. he's used his annual christmas message to urge us to take extra caution, though, and suggested getting a vaccine is in the christian spirit of the season. getting jabbed not just for themselves, for ourselves, but for friends and family and everyone we meet. that, after all, is the teaching ofjesus christ, whose birth is at the heart of this enormous festival, that we should love our neighbours as we love ourselves. and so let's think of all those who are being good neighbours and thinking of others. in the 2a hours to yesterday, almost 120,000 new infections were recorded, a record high. and there were 147 deaths within 28 days of a positive test. in his christmas message, the labour leader said this year had been incredibly difficult for the country. in the darkest of times, christian values of kindness, of compassion and hope have shone through. communities have come together to help one another. key workers have saved countless lives. there is some positive news. the uk health security agency says that someone with omicron is between 30% and 45% less likely to visit a&e than if they had delta and between 50% and 70% less likely to be admitted to hospital. but it warned that higher transmission could still mean significant numbers of people end up there. and it also suggested boosterjab protection wanes faster against omicron than delta — 15% to 25% lower after ten weeks. there is a blunder of crassness open the findings were published yesterday but it is not yet at the point where we could download that serious threat. what we are seeing is on the ground largely in young people and it is onlyjust now the cases are starting to dip into the older population, particularly the 70 and 70 plus —year—olds. some vaccination centres will stay open throughout christmas. 200,000 slots are available between now and boxing day, according to nhs england, in what it's calling its jingle jabs campaign. scotland, wales and northern ireland have already announced that further restrictions will come into force from boxing day to tackle omicron. so far, number ten has not followed suit, saying it continues to monitor the data, but it has not ruled out further measures after christmas. helen catt, bbc news, westminster. let's talk to our political correspondent iain watson. we saw the prime minister channelling jesus christ and his attempts to encourage everyone to get boosted. it is great that people can do that during the break. how much is the prime minister three given the opposition of many in his party to take further measures that he feels it is needed next week? h0 he feels it is needed next week? i157 decision has been taken yet on further measures. he would be relatively free to issue more guidance next week, which for example has happened in scotland where nicola sturgeon has suggested that people should not mix in more than three households and the prime minister could do that without the need to recall parliament but he has given a pledge to recall parliament if he is going to introduce new legally enforceable regulations and that would therefore mean there is likely to be resistance from many of his own mps. 100 likely to be resistance from many of his own mps.100 or so very much against it in the existing restrictions which includes advice to work from home. so he could face quite a unwelcome clash if he wants to go down that road against the backdrop of data suggesting that omicron infection is far likely to centre to hospital van delta. street sources very keen to stress they are not ruling anything out at this stage and what is concerning them, ministers have been meeting on the session every day this week, is not just about hospitalisations and the severity of omicron, but simply the sheer number of people in the public services, in the health service, currently off sick. those numbers have been going up and we continue to rise and if that is the case new guidance may be necessary. other data they will be looking at is real—time data on hospitalisations. we have the assumption that fewer people will go into hospital as a result of omicron but his numbers extremely high at the moment and they want to see just how many people are going into hospital especially in london which seems to be ahead of the rest of the uk in terms of infections. as for when they will make those decisions i am told the other side of christmas and boxing day, monday, not necessarily guaranteed, they will be poring over more data at this stage, so although the official line is that boris johnson is not hesitating to take action if he feels it is necessary there will certainly be a lively discussion among cabinet ministers next week and he mayjust discussion among cabinet ministers next week and he may just want to put off any final decision until he sees more data.— sees more data. given that it is oliticall sees more data. given that it is politically difficult _ sees more data. given that it is politically difficult for _ sees more data. given that it is politically difficult for him - sees more data. given that it is politically difficult for him at. sees more data. given that it is| politically difficult for him at the moment to take any further action, it is striking he has not been taking questions from journalists over the last week and has been issuing statements. do we have any idea as to what the staff sickness levels or shortages in the public service trigger action by government? that is whatjenny harries stressed today. government? that is what jenny harries stressed today.- government? that is what jenny increase in staff sickness over the period of a week in the national health service in england. there has been some talk, againjenny harries from the health security agency, would not get into any one specific figure being the key to this, but there has been talk about whether 400 hospital admissions a day in hospital might be enough to trigger get at least further guidance to households next week. at the momentjust over 300 but there doesn't seem to be an exponential rise in this case. where there is more data, specifically as jenny harries was suggesting, is on the older population. theyjust beginning to tap into the older population. the worrying thing for her as the unknown is and what we do not know yet is whether omicron is sufficiently serious for older people as it is for younger people. if the data looks bad rather than good it could force the government's hand and equally if it is more encouraging than perhaps boris johnson could put off any decisions but there is a recognition that next week is going to be crucial and decisions will have to be taken but not necessarily rated the beginning of the week. it is a different approach in scotland and northern ireland where they are trying to take a more precautionary approach and introduce new restrictions from boxing day. ian and introduce new restrictions from boxing day-— boxing day. ian watson in westminster, predicted on the roads. meanwhile, people heading abroad are having to deal with a tangle of travel restrictions. simon calder, travel editor of the independent, is at gatwick airport for us. starting with planes, if you are lucky enough to try to have a holiday, a lot of countries are making it very difficult for british travellers to arrive.— making it very difficult for british travellers to travellers to arrive. they certainly are, and that is why gatwick - travellers to arrive. they certainly are, and that is why gatwick and i are, and that is why gatwick and indeed other leading uk airports are rather quiet today because the usual flights that would be setting off here to go to the french alps ski resorts, to go to paris, to the south of france, to german cities, they are not happening because of they are not happening because of the bands that germany and france imposed last week. probably something like ten or 20% down in terms of passenger numbers and therefore getting through the terminal is not actually too bad at all. no significant case for security. not heeding any reports of elsewhere. as is normal you get a few delays so the british airways flights coming in from mexico and from costa rica are a couple of hours late but i think people will get to where they need to be and of course flights towards tea—time on christmas eve there are a fair number of links around tomorrow including a couple of flights between heathrow and edinburgh and glasgow. but generally of course most transport shuts down, which is why if you are going to get where you're going to get then that is probably quite a good idea to start right now. if probably quite a good idea to start riaht now. , ., ., probably quite a good idea to start riaht now. i. ., , ., probably quite a right now. if you are starting on the trains, what is the - right now. if you are starting on the trains, what is the picture i right now. if you are starting on i the trains, what is the picture they are? a lot of disruption i think. starting with the strike, cross—country trains run a really important network from scotland and the north—east of england through the north—east of england through the midlands two south west england. on top of that they have a service from manchester to the south coast of bournemouth and they run across from birmingham and leicester are close to sta nsted from birmingham and leicester are close to stansted airport. those trains are not running. one crucial aspect is that rutland is now cut off from the rest of the uk by rail. it will be at least until monday. quite serious if you are trying to get long distance. a skeleton service operating between edinburgh, plymouth and between manchester and reading and otherwise you will be put on the other train operators. then your problems can only be just beginning because they have got lots of issues with staff suffering from omicron or isolating because they have got close partners who are isolating and that is causing mayhem. you have seen three planned cuts on for example lner on the east coast main line and great western railway particularly from cardiff to penzance. and avanti west coast are warning of short notice cancellation so it is very messy. the good news is even though it is a working day for you and i and an awful lot of people do not seem to be commuting so if you are travelling in and out of the big cities that should be ok. there are nine things shut down mid—evening generally. they will not be any trains running anywhere in the uk tomorrow. a few services on boxing day and then when things should resume on monday we will find the usual seasonal engineering works which will mean that you will be for example if you are in the bristol parkway area between manchester and stalybridge, rental rates, there will be quite a lot of disruption as they are doing all that essential engineering work. it they are doing all that essential engineering work.— engineering work. it sounds incredibly — engineering work. it sounds incredibly complicated. i engineering work. it sounds i incredibly complicated. thank you for summarising it also brilliantly and have a lovely christmas wherever you are spending it. the queen is expected to give a very personal christmas message tomorrow — her first since the death of her husband, prince philip. she will speak beside a framed photograph of the couple taken during their diamond wedding anniversary in 2007 — and will wear the same sapphire brooch that she wore on her honeymoon. our royal correspondent nicholas witchell reports. for the queen, forced for a second year by covid to spend christmas at windsor rather than hosting herfamily at sandringham, this will be a moment to reflect on a year marked by sadness. her christmas broadcast, a still from which has been issued by buckingham palace, is expected to be a very personal one. prominently on the desk beside her, a photograph of her and prince philip taken in 2007 when they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. philip's death last april, two months short of his 100th birthday and after 73 years of marriage, was the emotional low point of the year for the monarch. apart from a reference to him in her address to the cop 26 conference, the queen has not so far spoken publicly about how much he meant to her. her broadcast may be an opportunity for her to do so. within the royal family, mindful that this will be the queen's first christmas without her husband, arrangements have been changed so that she won't be alone. clarence house has confirmed that the prince of wales and the duchess of cornwall willjoin her at windsor on christmas day. other members of the family may also be there. but absent, of course, will be the duke and duchess of sussex. from their home in california, they've issued this photograph wishing their supporters happy holidays. it shows harry and meghan with their son archie and their daughter lilibet, pictured for the first time. and while the queen will doubtless look back on a year touched by personal sadness and some family tensions, she will surely also look to the future, to her platinum jubilee next year, marking her 70 years on the throne and another event which will be of particular significance for her — a service of thanksgiving for the life of the duke of edinburgh, which it's been announced will take place at westminster abbey in the spring. nicholas witchell, bbc news. the latest headlines on bbc news.... a senior uk health official says promising omicron data offers a glimmer of christmas hope but warns we still don't know the impact on the elderly. thousands of nhs staff and volunteers will keep vaccination centres open over the festive period — as the pm uses his christmas message to urge people to getjabbed. as people head home for christmas, industrial action and staff sickness causes disruption on the railways. sport, and a full round up from the bbc sport centre. good morning. pressure is mounting on the premier league — after tottenham's head coach antonio conte said yesterday's meeting between them and the division's managers had been a waste of time. a virtual meeting was held with managers and captains from all 20 clubs — who raised concerns about the congested fixture list over the festive season at a time when clubs are dealing with the impact of rising coronavirus cases. conte though wasn't impressed by the outcome. some coaches are trying to speak and to ask about solutions but i think everything was decided and i think yesterday it was a wall. b, everything was decided and i think yesterday it was a wall.— everything was decided and i think yesterday it was a wall. a waste of time? i yesterday it was a wall. a waste considered. one suggestion from some managers was to bring back the option of making five subsitutes during a match to ease the physical demands on players. that rule was brought in as football initially returned in the summer of 2020, but was dropped ahead of this season. guardiola thinks that was the wrong decision. the welfare for the players should be the most important thing for the players and for the people. it is the only country who does not accept five substitutions, just three. just three. why? we want to protect the players with five substitutions. it is much betterfor everyone for this amount of game year by year by year and the competitions. finally all the clubs decide no. england's test captainjoe root has called on his team—mates to be brave and show trust in themselves as they aim to fight back in the ashes. england go into the must—win boxing day test 2—0 down and with the third test at the mcg in front of an expected capacity of around 70,000, root has urged the squad to enjoy the occasion. it isa it is a brilliant event to be involved in. just an ashes series out here is something every player wants to be part of but to get a chance to play on boxing day is very special. and with where the series is currently it is a really exciting opportunity. clearly we are going to have to play a lot better than we have to play a lot better than we have done so far in the first two games but i expect us to do just that. good news for england rugby fans today — as billy and mako vunipola have signed new deals with saracens — meaning they're still available for england selection. the brothers were both being chased by clubs in france — and had they moved there that would have ended their international opportunities as england have a policy to not select overseas players. there's good news for female professional golfers this morning — as the ladies european tour is set to offer players a record prize fund of more than £20 million for 2022. that's after the let announced its schedule for next year, with 31 events across 21 countries — the biggest number of tournaments in its 44—year history. the new season gets under way in early february. that's all the sport for now. the family of a nine—year—old boy who shared his concerns about the rising cost of living say they've been overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers. dayjanta samuels told the bbc last week that he wished he was older, so he could help pay for the household bills that his mother, a full—time carer, was struggling to meet. since then, they've been inundated with gifts and messages of support. our social affairs correspondent, michael buchanan, caught up with the family. dayjanta dreams of being a footballer. a common ambition for many nine—year—olds, but his motivation to earn some money to pay the family's household bills has led to an outpouring of love. i feel better because people said that i'm a sweet boy and i'm a good child. last week, dayjanta and his mother spoke frankly about their financial struggles, how christine's full time salary as a carer wasn't enough to live on. do you worry? yeah, a lot and i don't want to be living out on the streets. i wish i was older so i could pay the bills with her. his honesty struck a chord and the family have been inundated with donations and gifts. i feel better because they made me forget about everything that's been bad happening and they made me think about fun stuff. a lady gave me £75 to get him sneakers and then he was like, i can take some of it for the bills. i'm like, oh, my god. i know it will take some time. i'm not going tojust go like that really. yeah, i'mjust happy that he's happy. my favourite thing in here is my bed cover and i really love it. and on the pillow... the arsenal presents have made dayjanta happiest and his 18—year—old sister has also been sent some gifts. but for his mother, it's the cards and letters that have meant the most. if somebody say like something positive to me, like i'm a wonderful person and stuff, i find it hard to receive that because i never grew up like that, where, you know, your mum, your parents, say, speak these words. "you got no money, but you have two beautiful children. that absolutely love you and one day... will understand all you have done for them". it's good when you receive words like this, it gives you a lot of motivation. it's very powerful. i think i will be always every now and then take them out and look at them. i will love the christmas tree. among the gifts was this real tree and some presents for the family. for once, dreading christmas, the kindness of strangers has changed everything. i appreciate this so much. and i was thinking, i don't know, how can i tell these people thanks? since we first met, christine has lost herjob. her first task next year is therefore to get a new one. but the experience of the past week has given her renewed optimism. michael buchanan, bbc news, tipton in the west midlands. for fans of music star louis tomlinson, today is not just christmas eve — they're celebrating the 30th birthday of their hero. louis was the oldest member of the superband one direction when it was founded back in 2010 and is the first to hit the 30 milestone. he's since launched a solo career, and has a sold out world tour coming up in 2022. let's have a listen to a song from his debut album, walls. # i can ease the pain # just a little taste, babe # and you won't let go of your hold on me # you kill my mind # raise my body back to life # and i don't know what i'd do without you now # you kill my mind # raise my body back to life # and i don't know what i'd do without you now # kept me living # from the last time # from a prison of a past life well, louis' fandom is said to be really unique in its devotion and protectiveness to the singer—songwriter and we can talk now to a superfan, alessia dellavedova, whojoins us from milan. thanks forjoining us. why are you such a big fan of this young man?
