"rebuilding cricket in yorkshire" is one of the reasons that darren gough has given as to why he wanted to be appointed as the interim managing director of yorkshire county cricket club. the former england fast bowler replaces martyn moxon, who was one of 16 people to leave the club last week after the former player, azeem rafiq, was found to be a victim of "racial harassment and bullying" at yorkshire. gough spent 15 years at the county over two spells and will be in the position until the end of the 2022 season. he says he is aware of the "wider responsibilities" of the position. both england and australia have had to deal with controversy, quarantine and bad weather affecting their preparations for the first ashes test but it is almost time for the first ball to be bowled. australia have named their starting xi for the first test which begins in brisbane at midnight tomorrow but england's captain joe root still has a few key decisions to make, not least whether to start with ben stokes who has been away from competitive cricket since july — he took a break to prioritise his mental health while recovering from a finger injury. in terms of ben he has done everything he can to get himself into the best physical shape possible and so have the rest of the bowlers, whether that has been through trying to simulate things and get workloads in different ways, walking around brisbane, playing a full day in the field, it is a unique set of circumstances. we need to try and make the best of what we have. in that respect both teams are in the same boat and we have had very similar build—ups. all you can do is throw everything into the game and make sure you give a really good account of yourself. and we've had confirmation that the final ashes test in perth will be moved, due to coronavirus restrictions in western australia. no replacement venue has been named as yet but melbourne is standing by. officials in tasmania are lobbying to take an ashes test to hobart for the first time. for lewis hamilton and max verstappen, it all comes down to the final formula one race of the season in abu dhabi. the two are level on points after a remarkable race in saudi arabia which was won by the british driver...but with four flash points, including a collision between verstappen and hamilton, the sport is all set for a dramatic climax, particularly as both drivers need to work out how to deal with the other on the track with so much at stake.the most significant moment was when max verstappen was ordered to allow lewis hamilton to pass. but as the dutchman slowed to let him by, hamilton crashed max verstappen has the upper hand, they are equal in points, but max verstappen has one more win to his tally and it all matches what comes down in the last race, hamilton has to be careful, if they crash, then it is the championship for max verstappen. lewis hamilton may have had seven titles, he is not under the same pressure as max, he has not been marking, but he is saying, i remember my first. that's all the sport for now, but there's more on the bbc sport website, including updates from today's champions league news conferences with pep guardiola and jurgen klopp. i'll be back with more later. let's return to the government's plan for tackling drug misuse in england and wales, which is due to be released later today. the ten—year strategy will outline ways of dealing with criminal gangs, and also warning that recreational users could lose their passports or driving licences. the medic dame carol black was invited by the home office earlier this year to conduct an independent review of recovery services and treatment for drug addicts. she told our home editor mark easton what needed to change what we need is a whole system approach, so we need strong, central direction, that is why we need a central drugs unit. we need national outcome framework and then we need that really connected to the local authorities who have to deliver this treatment and recovery. we need that the money, if we get it, is ring fenced and then we need accountability, because at the moment, the drug delivery system or the drug treatment system is so fragmented that many, many people get nothing more than a prescription for methadone. so it is vital, in your view, that we do so at that bit out? we must sort it out, because as long as there is demand, there will be supply. and we have to reduce demand and the best way to reduce demand is by giving people really high quality treatment and recovery. there have been some suggestions that they have accepted your recommendations around spending for around three years, around £400,000,000, how would you respond if that is what turns out? i would be delighted if we can get a sum of money like that, because it would enable us to start to rebuild a system and it would allow us to build the workforce, allow us to make sure that mental health, housing and also the ability to work is included in the package. looking at the way the strategy has been launched today, we have had a lot of talk around the criminal justice elements that they are going to be introducing and i know you did not focus on that side of things, but what is your take on the way the government seems preoccupied on the justice side of things? i think they feel they must be occupied and preoccupied with enforcement and of course it is important and we do want county lines to disappear, but unless you give equal balance to treatment and recovery, we are really not going to move forward. we have had enforcement for many years and we haven't really solved our problem. the international tennis federation says it will not follow the lead of the women's tennis association and suspend its tournaments in china over concerns for the safety of tennis star peng shuai. the player wasn't seen in public for several weeks after accusing a chinese politician of sexual assault. the federation*s president, david haggerty, told the bbc it did not want to as he put it *punish a billion people'. we will continue to run ourjunior events in the country, the senior events, that are there for the time being. we will continue to analyse the situation but we feel growing grassroots and making tennis available is an important element and so we will continue those efforts in conjunction with the chinese tennis association. the fda union has lost a legal challenge over prime minister borisjohnson*s decision to support priti patel his trip comes despite rising disease of russia's president putin is due to have talks with india's prime minister narendra modi in delhi later as the two countries meet to talk about defence deals. it's mr putin's first bilateral meeting abroad since the pandemic began and his trip comes despite rising covid numbers in his own country. (read 0n) (pres)0ur correspondent in delhi, rajini vaidyanathan told me more about what's likely to come out of the meeting. military announcements will be the takeaway today, hugely significant, because president putin has not travelled much since the pandemic. here he is for a bilateral with prime minister modi. india gets most of its arms from russia, russia is as largest supplier and one thing that might be talked about a lot today, as well as inking some of these new technical agreements is these new technical agreements is the fact that india has bought these surface to air missiles from russia. it purchased them several years ago, but they are starting to be delivered now, but this actually caused a lot of consternation in the us, they even threaten sanctions for india buying military equipment from russia although it is unlikely to impose sanctions because india is a key player in this region when it comes to countering china and so wide we are talking about military agreements, the mood music underneath is india's role in this wider region in both the us and russia seen its strategic importance. the gambian president adama barrow has been declared the winner of the country's presidential election, held at the weekend. the gambian electoral commission said mr barrow polled almost twice as many votes as his main rival. the opposition has challenged the results. 0ur correspondent in the gambia, thomas naadi, gave us more details: before the results were announced, the opposition rejected them citing delays in the final results and saying that some of the results announced by the independent electoral commission were not endorsed. they also claimed there were issues that some police stations but did not give details. adama barrow came to power five years ago and the former military strongman rejected his defeat. his support and influence could not overturn the outcome of this election in favour of his preferred candidate. adama barrow is expected to address high unemployment, rising costs of living and revitalising the vital tourism sector which has been impacted by the coronavirus. this election is a test of the democratic progress in the gambia. the headlines on bbc news... a barrister for the victims of the grenfell tower fire tells the public inquiry into the disaster that governments *concealed' the extent of risks to building safety a ten—year strategy for tackling drug misuse in england and wales — a crackdown on criminal gangs, and a warning to recreational users that they could lose their passports or driving licences. the former myanmar leader aung san suu kyi — ousted in a military takeover — is sentenced to four years in prison for inciting unrest — the first in a series of verdicts that could see herjailed for the rest of her life. in one of his first tv interviews since resigning as health secretary matt hancock has said he is sorry for all the people he let down. the suffolk mp stood down after pictures were published showing him breaking social distancing guidance by kissing a colleague in the department of health offices. he spoke to bbc look east's political correspondent andrew sinclair. the mp for west suffolk getting his boosterjab at newmarket racecourse yesterday. and then volunteering for a while at the vaccination centre. it's the first time he has invited the local media to see him at work since his resignation back injune. you know, what i can say is what i really feel which was that it was a failure of leadership, i apologised, i'm very happy to reiterate that. matt hancock was forced to resign as health secretary after a picture emerged of him clearly breaking social distancing rules with a colleague something which at the time caused immense public anger. do you think the public has forgiven you? i hope that by being straightforward about the fact that i messed up and apologising for that and resigning, i hope people can see that i get it and now i need to do a good job representing people here. i also find that people have been forgiving too, which i have been gratefulfor. have you forgiven him? no, not really. why not? 0h, because everybody else had to stop spending time with their families and had to stop, you know, socialising with people and he still was. it is always going to be there - at the back of your mind, isn't it? 0ne rule for one and one for another, isn't it? - where you cross with him at the time? yeah. yeah, definitely. yeah. i suppose he has apologised so, you know, yeah, move on. we all make mistakes, everybody. nobody in the world says they have never made a mistake. he has paid for it. we filmed him posing for selfies in newmarket in september. friends of the mp insist that most of the public have been forgiving, grateful for his work on the vaccine. many people enjoy... in recent weeks, he has spoken about the challenges facing the horse racing industry at newmarket. he is also campaigning for a cinema for the town and a health health behaviour hill. he says he has no plans to return to ministerial life, happy for now to be a backbench mp, and he accepts that rehabilitation could take a while. andrew sinclair, bbc look east. incidents of domestic violence in west cumbria have doubled during the pandemic — according to a women's support group in whitehaven. women out west say victims are left terrified and struggle for support even after abusers have been taken to court. they're now issuing body cameras so women can gather evidence of stalking or harassment to take to the police. mark mcalindon reports. i was assaulted just over a year ago by my ex partner. it was very sudden and unexpected. are the words of a woman we are calling sarah. she was subjected to physical attacks and emotional abuse. her former partner was taken to court, but she is still looking over her shoulder. one of the worst things about being abused is that you have to be silent all the time. you can't talk about your abuse. you can't talk about when you're with them, you can't talk about it when you are going through the court. and when you get a conviction everybody believes it has all gone away but it has not gone away. they do not want to lose their victim because that victim is a price to them. it is a nightmare that is never going to end. women out west assess the risk to sarah as a serious but she is far from alone. we have seen a significant rise in women coming forward asking for our help with our services especially during covid. i think our eldest client is 82, so we have a whole variety of different women come at different ages with the most harrowing stories of abuse, some of that go back decades stuff like that is why sarah is one of the number of women now wearing personal body cameras. these are the cameras we are giving out to our ladies at the moment. they are really easy to use and they are effective and quick. all they need to do is press the button and taken for the record to see what is happening around them. their ex has been prosecuted for whatever crime but they are still feeling they are being harassed and the issue for the police is where is the evidence of this? that is what those cameras are therefore, to provide evidence of any further harassment. so far this year there have been more than 600 prosecutions for domestic violence in cumbria, with 70 protection orders issued and more than 260 restraining orders handed out. but women like sarah know the fear doesn't necessarily enter there. all i want is to live my life like he doesn't exist. and i am able to do that to some point with the camera, because i do not want to have to change my own behaviours because of him, because it makes me still under his control and still abused by him. there's a warning that young women with breast cancer are avoiding having mastectomies because they won't be able to have reconstructive surgery afterwards. that's according to a patient who has been on the reconstructive waiting list throughout the pandemic , but like hundreds of others , has been told they will have to wait much longer. our health correspondent matthew hill went to meet her. ijust feel i'm still completely in limbo. you've had a battle and you've kind of come out the other side, but it's not complete. nicola was given the devastating news that she had breast cancer three years ago. after surgery to remove her left breast, she has been waiting a year—and—a—half for reconstructive surgery at southmead. the 53—year—old says the prosthetic is very uncomfortable. she feels self—conscious, especially in front of her new husband. your chest wall is left completely concave. you have no cleavage. you obviously have no breast tissue. because of the cancellations of operations caused by the pandemic, reconstructive surgery was downgraded. nothing remotely cosmetic about having a breast reconstruction. over the last two years, nicola says she's met other women in oncology who tell her they are so worried about the same happening they won't go for a mastectomy. instead, choosing other options. i think it helps perhaps to put it in perspective as to how important mentally it is for all of us. a leading plastic surgeon in the west says there is a big variation in the amount of reconstructive surgery available. it's an enormous problem getting reconstruction done at the moment i'm afraid. they tend to be long operations and lots of theatres are not up to full capacity, let alone anywhere near that across the country, and with the increasing numbers of people ending up in a&es at the moment, things are stopping again. it really is terrible. things have just ground to a halt. i think that the fear is within the profession that the nhs hasn't survived. it needs a fundamental reformation very quickly and that work is being done, but it isjust dire if you're waiting for an operation at the moment. southmead stopped surgery from march tojune 2020 and has carried out 94 breast operations since then, but mainly surgery to remove cancers. in a statement, southmead say that, due to covid, they've had to focus on cancer treatment and life and limb saving surgery. they say they're incredibly sorry for the delays. in the meantime, nicola is looking to go private. that will mean a bill of around £30,000. matthew hill, bbc points west. a line of breaking news coming in from myanmar were axing sushi the former civilian leader who was ousted by the military was sentenced to four years in prison on various charges which amnesty international amongst others have said were trumped up. we are hearing that that sentence has been reduced to two years, that is according to state television, being quoted by reuters. it is being cut from four years to two years after a partial pardon, we are hearing from the military regime that now rule myanmar. her supporters fear that this sentence will just supporters fear that this sentence willjust be the start of many other sentences, because she is facing other charges and could end up being sentenced to life in prison, but that initial sentence of four years has been cut, we are hearing from myanmar state television, to two years. today the *bbc sound of 2022 longlist* has been revealed. the list has in the past predicted the musical success of adele, amy winehouse and george ezra. the nominees are chosen by a host of music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent. lola young, a 21 year old singerfrom london, is one of those nominated. she's the voice of this year's john lewis christmas advert... #just # just too late to stay. # just too late to stay. # too late to stay. # too late to stay. # we will always be together. # we will always be together. # howeverfar it # we will always be together. # however far it seems. # however far it seems. # we will always be together. # we will always be together. # together in electric dreams. well earlier my colleague victoria derbyshire spoke to lola and asked her how she felt about the nomination. it is a big recognition thing, i guess, obviously being an up—and—coming artist, having to work hard and things, it means a lot. the list of winners in the past, like adele and george ezra and the list has really predicted accurately, hasn't it? yes, in the past you look at adele and where she was aware she is now and it is pretty mad. how did thejohn lewis advert come about? it was pretty random. i got asked to do it and there were a lot of people wanting to do it as well and it was a real experience, the whole process of recording it and they asked me to do together in electric dreams and i said of course and they chose me, that was insane. did you know that track because i remember the original and you are probably too young to? i know the track and i know the human league. i love the song it is an incredible song and i was really pleased. i tried to make it my own as much as possible. you really have. did you come up with the arrangement? i had a big say in that. i originally did a different version which was very similar. i know with the pastjohn lewis adverts they are all quite in that vein of being quite emotive and i wanted to create something around that feeling. i read an interview where you said when you are young you did not have a particularly amazing voice, so what work have you done to get the now where you have an amazing voice by the age of 21? so, obviously i did a lot of vocal training, i had a vocal coach and i had a cyst on my vocal cords about a year and a half ago, so i had to get that cut off grow. hang on, that is quite dramatic. presumably you were thinking, this could wreck the rest of my career! definitely. i made the decision, i could not reach certain notes, the vocal range was very limited at that time when i developed the cyst, so i got that removed and obviously my voice is still temperamental, but it is better than it was. you went to the brit school, what kind of work do you do there? there is a lot of, singing, dancing, a lot of people say it is like fame, it is not like that. there were some people getting up and dancing on the tables, but it was not too intense. we still have to do regular lessons and subjects, it was a really nice experience, i made incredible friends and learned quite a bit. what are your ambitions, what are your dreams? at the moment, i think, i have a lot of dreams and ambitions. i would love to be able to tour the world with my music and sell out massive arenas and shows, but i think my main goal in this, i think everyone has those marks in which they think, but my main one isjust you have a career within this, which i already am kind of sustaining, but also to have and change peoples lives with music. hopefully i am able to do that with mine. and the winner of the sound of 2022 will be announced injanuary on bbc news and bbc radio i. now it's time for a look at the weather with matt taylor. it is blustery, the rain becoming confined to the north sea in the evening, a mixture of showers in the evening, a mixture of showers in the evening rush hour and it is going to start to feel quite chilly, temperatures dropping below freezing across some parts of north—east scotland, a cold night ahead, the shower is a mixture of rain hail and slow could fade away, icy conditions in the morning, temperatures drop to freezing or below for the start of the tuesday morning commute. here are the first signs of the storm pushing on, strengthening whence heavy rains preceded by sleet and snow across northern ireland but some of the big impacts will be around the coast. gail is developing elsewhere with rain turning to sleet and snow across the pennines and parts of... whence continue to strengthen, and snow could have an impact in the north of england and scotland for the tuesday evening commute. this is bbc news, i'm rebecca jones. the headlines: a ten year strategy for dealing with drug abuse in england and wales. the prime minister says he wants to come down hard on drugs gangs, but spend more on treatment for addicts. the drugs gangs are doing major damage to life chances of kids growing up in this country. i think it is a disgusting trade and we need to fight it. i want to see the plans, i want to see the strategy, i want the prime minister to take responsibility for the money that's been taken out of criminaljustice in the last ten years that's caused many of these problems. a barrister for the victims of the grenfell tower fire tells the public inquiry into the disaster that government's lack of openness should be regarded as "one of the major scandals of our time." one of the creators of the oxford astrazeneca vaccine urges the world to invest more to prepare forfuture pandemics,

0ur correspondent in the gambia, thomas naadi, gave us more details: before the results were announced, the opposition rejected them citing delays in the final results and saying that some of the results announced by the independent electoral commission were not endorsed. they also claimed there were issues that some police stations but did not give details. adama barrow came to power five years ago and the former military strongman rejected his defeat. his support and influence could not overturn the outcome of this election in favour of his preferred candidate. adama barrow is expected to address high unemployment, rising costs of living and revitalising the vital tourism sector which has been impacted by the coronavirus. this election is a test of the democratic progress in the gambia. the headlines on bbc news... a barrister for the victims of the grenfell tower fire tells the public inquiry into the disaster that governments *concealed' the extent of risks to building safety a ten—year strategy for tackling drug misuse in england and wales — a crackdown on criminal gangs, and a warning to recreational users that they could lose their passports or driving licences. the former myanmar leader aung san suu kyi — ousted in a military takeover — is sentenced to four years in prison for inciting unrest — the first in a series of verdicts that could see after pictures were published showing him breaking social distancing guidance by kissing a colleague in the department of health offices. he spoke to bbc look east's political correspondent andrew sinclair. the mp for west suffolk getting his boosterjab at newmarket racecourse yesterday. and then volunteering for a while at the vaccination centre. it's the first time he has invited the local media to see him at work since his resignation back injune. you know, what i can say is what i really feel which was that it was a failure of leadership, i apologised, i'm very happy to reiterate that. matt hancock was forced to resign as health secretary after a picture emerged of him clearly breaking social distancing rules with a colleague something which at the time caused immense public anger. do you think the public has forgiven you? i hope that by being straightforward about the fact that i messed up and apologising for that and resigning, i hope people can see that i get it and now i need to do a good job representing people here. i also find that people have been forgiving too, which i have been gratefulfor. have you forgiven him? no, not really.
