here and wherever the technology takes us, good morning to morning agreed technology takes us, good morning agreed and join you this day in celebration of our nation, our people and the people that we now chart. on a rainsoaked night 55 years ago, the inhabitants of what had been the world's first slave society shared the mantle of colonialism to become an independent nation. vessel independent nation. vessel independent barbados weighed anchor and cast off from our colonial moorings. unable to see the future, we embarked on the journey of nationhood with no clear knowledge of our strength and cape —— capabilities or our potential as a people. some were understandably fearful of how our inexperienced crews and passengers would navigate storm tossed international waters. a sense of uncertainty surrounded the viability of our social experience and our economic well—being. others voiced grave reservations about where our small park would end up. but evenin small park would end up. but even in the face of the uncertainties and the unknown, we set aside our doubts and fears and with hope in our wisdoms, we committed to the journey, embracing the vision of a proud, strong, hard—working people, and we sailed forward. on that first independent night, we became bound together as a nation and as a people. the consciousness and responsibility of independence imbued with an understanding that whatever lay ahead in the best of times and in the worst of times, we had to rely on each other and face the oncoming challenges together. it was from this vision and understanding, that we construct the foundation for our new nation, and with it, the core values and guiding print of independent barbados. to this, we owe our identity and ourtriumph as to this, we owe our identity and our triumph as a people, and our triumph as a people, and as cautioned by our first prime minister, we ought no longer to be found loitering on colonial premises. in 1966, we were seeking to define ourselves, our national identity, and stamped our place in the world. since independence, our humble citizens, our crews and passengers, have built an international reputation anchored on our characteristics, our national values, ourstability and characteristics, our national values, our stability and our successes, drawing on the lessons of those intervening years, possessing a clear sense of who we are and what we are capable of achieving in the year 2021, we now turn our vessels bow towards the new republic. we do this so that we may seize the full substance of our sovereignty. may seize the full substance of oursovereignty. for may seize the full substance of our sovereignty. for decades, we have had discourse and debate about the transition of barbados to a republic. today, debate and discourse have become action. today, we set our compass to a new direction, girded by the successes of the last five years, boyd by the confidence garnered from our triumphs and accomplishments. committed to country and to each other and motivated to press confidently and boldly forward the sake of our nation and for our present and future generations. —— buoyed. we stand on and claim our traditions, irritant, earned by the sweat and inherited from our forefathers. the sweat and inherited from ourforefathers. as the sweat and inherited from our forefathers. as we celebrate all that is good in us as a people and travel onward, we must avoid the trap of merrily reliving, retailing and relying on our past achieve as a nation. instead, we must seek to refine our definition of self, of state, and the barbados brand in a more complex, fractured and turbulent world. for the formation of the republic of barbados, out of the structure of independent barbados is ultimately a call to greatness. the greatness which was contemplated by our forefathers and enshrined in the lyrics of our national anthem. answering this call requires of us an act of real and deliberate action, the determination to build and improve upon what existed before. : :, , before. and we leave events in bridgetown _ before. and we leave events in bridgetown barbados - before. and know the least about, and that's the enormous variety of invertebrates. in mid—1967 there was an application to mine on alison reef. the man who wanted to mine it for limestone actually called it a dead brief. i and a group of colleagues who had been studying coral reefs and fish were actually asked to go and carry out a scientific survey of the reef to determine if what he said was true. we spent five days diving and found it to be a perfectly normal reef which certainly should not be allowed to be mined. the queensland government of the day's attitude was that the reef was attitude was that the reef was a nice pile of limestone that could be carted away to southeast asia and made into cement. the queensland premier thought that mining lots of reefs on the barrier reef would create lots of employment. he completely misjudged the queensland public. i had to start obviously working full—time as a barrier reef campaigner. the volume of mail, requests for information on constant media interviews was just endless. the final decision over the mining application came about seven months later. it was only saying there would be no mining at alison reef. the really big shock came on the 24th of december 1968. the thought of having an oil industry throughout the region potentially was just appalling. i thought this was going to be a lot harderfight i thought this was going to be a lot harder fight because this was the world's oil industry wanting to get a toehold and that was a very frightening prospect. we needed people all over the world say to the australian government, please don't do that. we want to come and visit australia and visit the barrier reef, so please don't drill the reef. people responded, they really did. our politicians got a deluge of international attention and i think they started to realise this really was going to impact australian tourism. having that national legislation passed really was the decisive moment in 1975 stopping the entire barrier reef region was proclaimed a marine park. no oil drilling, no mining, and that was the day we thought oh, we've actually succeeded. how about that? the reef isn't completely safe stopping most particularly we have to deal with climate change. fortunately, kids from high school students and even younger i'm going to really make the difference, just keep on, keep it up, that's all we need. don't shut up, keep it up. hello there. it certainly has been a cold few days across the uk. but in recent hours, things have been changing — more cloud has been rolling its way in from the west, and with that, we've seen some milderair pushing in, these westerly winds bringing those milder conditions for most of us, away from the far north of scotland. so for the majority, tuesday morning is starting with a very different feel — temperatures in liverpool, in plymouth, around 11 celsius. but with that, we have more in the way of cloud, and we have some outbreaks of patchy rain and drizzle. now, through the day, that cloud should thin and break a little bit to give some sunny spells, particularly across england and wales. and then through the afternoon, we'll see a band of heavier rain pushing in from the west, getting into parts of northern ireland and western scotland with strengthening winds. but top temperatures 10—12 celsius in most places — it will stay quite chilly in the far north of scotland, just three there in lerwick. now, through tuesday night, we're watching this area of low pressure — it's likely to deepen a little as it slides across the uk. so, as well as outbreaks of rain, we do have the potential for some quite strong winds. now, it certainly doesn't look like we'll see anything as windy as we have over the weekend, but still, the potential for some really strong winds for western coasts, perhaps for parts of eastern scotland and northeast england, those gusts could touch gale force in places. temperatures between 5—9 celsius, so starting to drop away again, you'll notice, and that is a sign of things to come on wednesday because the winds will be coming down from the north. and that will reintroduce some relatively cold air — probably not as cold as it has been, but yes, a chillier day to come on wednesday. we'll see areas of showers, or longer spells of rain pushing southwards, wintery showers even to quite low levels across the northern half of scotland, so some more snow likely to settle here. temperatures by the afternoon between 3—10 celsius, an increasingly cold feel as we go through the day. now, we have those northerly winds, they will ease a little as we get into thursday. as this ridge of high pressure builds in, some dry weatherfor a time. and then, this frontal system pushes in from the west, briefly maybe some snow — but, as milder air works in, that will tend to turn back to rain. so, temperatures really up and down this week, quite a chilly day to come on thursday, a slightly milder one likely on friday. this is bbc news. i'm sally bundock with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. a return to testing and self—isolation for uk arrivals — its among changes to come into force in response to the new variant of coronavirus. trumpets play. the first moments of a new republic. barbados swears in its first president as it loses queen elizabeth as the head of state. singer and idol, activist and spy. josephine baker's to become the first black woman to be interred at france's resting place for national heroes. ten weeks on and no sign of abating.
