hear the celebrations. jodie 0unsley became the first deaf female rugby player to play for a senior england side when she was awarded a professional sevens contract two years ago. since then, she's earned a legion of fans on and off the pitch — as she shares her experiences of being deaf in a team sport where communication is key. jodie's been speaking to our reporterjo currie. i don't look i think it is because ijust get on with it comments all the time. i think it is because i just get on with it so well and adapt around it, but really i do struggle, but i have learned to be more open—minded. i play for sale sharks and i am the first death player to represent england seven. and profoundly deaf so that means no hearing in both ears. it is like pressing the mute on the tv, just nothing at all. when i was ia months old had an implant fitted which allows me to hear some sounds, but obviously still deaf and i very much struggle every day for speak to people, i am lip reading, just scanning the body language, that's how i get on with life day to day. communication on the pitch, because in a team sport, like rugby, it is vital. so when you're in that situation, you're not hearing your team—mates, you're not hearing any of the noise around you, it's really isolating. you are having to rely on your eyesight to do all the work and that's what i do most of the time. when first started when i was around 15, i didn't have any confidence at all. i let myself struggle which was really bad, and go to a point where i wasn't enjoying rugby. but then when i got into it, the sevens set up, that's when i started getting confidence and the people around me were so supportive and i realised i needed to speak up. from there, my life changed, just how drastically it impacted me by being honest with people. we come up with hand signals. if there are certain tactics are certain moves, if a player is at the side of the pitch there is no chance i will hear a thing for the one of our moves is called the cheetah, so they will go like a claw. i've played in a sevens tournament with my college, got through to the final, so we got to play at twickenham, that was like the first time there was a crowd and i had an experience where there was more background noise. i didn't realise it was like that and i needed to move back. me being the deaf person, just carried on and the referee got the wrong side of it and thought i was being really rude and sent me off on a yellow card. ijust laugh about it now, but i try and make the referee aware i'm deaf before the games nowjust in case i do miss anything and there is more understanding of it. the doctors advise people with cochlear implants not to do any contact sports because the risk is that the magnet that is in my head, if that got a huge impact, it could potentially dislodge and then that means the implant doesn't work. so there is risks, and i completely understand that, but it's my decision to play rugby. 0f understand that, but it's my decision to play rugby. of all these amazing experiences with others risks. i have never had someone who was deaf that i could look up to because i wasn't aware, i didn't know anyone, never mind a deaf person but a deaf person in elite sport, just really want to try and prove to people that you can do it, go for the drains regardless to the barriers in life, because we all have our goals, i think it's how you adapt —— but we all have our obstacles, it's how you adapt to it. she is inspiring. finally, while most of you were tucked up in your beds this morning, kevin
